Automatic or Manual: Automatic
Programming language(s): Java
Source code available: Not currently
Function overview: Adds |priority=true
parameter to eligible files tagged with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}}
Links to relevant discussions (where appropriate): Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Images_and_Media/Commons/Drives#Priority_List_for_January_2012_Drive
Edit period(s): One time, then sporadically
Estimated number of pages affected: 50k
Exclusion compliant (Y/N): Yes
Already has a bot flag (Y/N): Yes
Function details: There is a general agreement among users working on Category:Copy to Wikimedia Commons that it would be helpful to focus on files in that category with at least one mainspace link. Granted that the January 2012 Move To Commons Drive is fast-approaching, the need for such a list becomes ever greater. The proposed bot would add a |priority=true
parameter to files tagged with {{Copy to Wikimedia Commons}}
with at least one file link to the mainspace. Use of this parameter will add {{January 2012 Move to Commons Drive Priority Candidate}}
to a file page, which in turn categorizes the file in Category:Move to Commons Priority Candidates. At the conclusion of the drive, {{January 2012 Move to Commons Drive Priority Candidate}}
will be removed from all file pages and the |priority=true
parameter will be modified to exclusively add the files to Category:Move to Commons Priority Candidates (see mockup)
Discussion
[edit]{{BAGAssistanceNeeded}} Given the time sensitive nature of this request (the Drive begins in fewer than 96 hours), it would be helpful if a BAG member could review this request asap. -FASTILY (TALK) 07:23, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- Just to expand on Fastily's bot request: I have developed a new tool for transferring images to the Commons (see WP:FTCG). It operates at its best when loading files from a category: hence, a bot to populate a category with images considered "priority" for the transfer drive. (Of course, WP:DEADLINE: but many files without transclusions should be deleted, and that is not the primary goal of this Move to Commons drive. The designation "priority" is really saying "these are the ones most likely to be wanted on Commons".)
- For editors not using FtCG, it is of course much easier to traverse a pre-populated category than to look up each file's "file usage" before deciding whether to transfer.
- And, as a last point, it makes more sense from a general efficiency perspective to have this work done only once beforehand, rather than have each individual "transferrer" do it for themselves.
- (Fastily or anyone else, do feel free to refute anything I have written if it is incorrect.) — This, that, and the other (talk) 09:53, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- The files that have no transclusions should be top-priority as most wouldn't get deleted if they are on the commons. ~~Ebe123~~ → report on my contribs. 14:55, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- There is -1210.22152109 hours to go, to be pricice. This will show {{BAGAssistanceNeeded}} when less than 4 hours away. ~~Ebe123~~ → report on my contribs. 18:35, 28 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
- A user has requested the attention of a member of the Bot Approvals Group. Once assistance has been rendered, please deactivate this tag by replacing it with
{{t|BAG assistance needed}}
. See above. There is a deadline because of the January MtC drive.
