Tropical cyclone WikiProject newsletter #26
[edit]Number 23, June 7
The Hurricane Herald
This is the monthly newsletter of WikiProject Tropical Cyclones. The Hurricane Herald aims to give a summary, both of the activities of the WikiProject and global tropical cyclone activity. If you wish to change how you receive this newsletter, or no longer wish to receive it, please add your username to the appropriate section on the mailing list. This newsletter covers all of April and May 2009.

Storm of the month
Cyclone Aila was the second tropical cyclone to form within the Northern Indian Ocean during 2009. The disturbance that was to become Cyclone Aila formed on 21 May 2009 about 950 kilometres (590 mi) to the south of Kolkata, in India. Over the next couple of days the disturbance slowly developed before a Tropical Cyclone Formation Alert was issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center early on 23 May 2009 and being designated as a depression by RSMC New Delhi. As of 27 May 2009[update], 330 people have been killed by Aila and at least 8,208 more are missing, while about 1 million are homeless. Health officials in Bangladesh confirmed a deadly outbreak on diarrhea on 29 May, with more than 7,000 people being infected and four dying. In Bangladesh, an estimated 20 million people were at risk of post-disaster diseases due to Aila. Damage totaled $40.7 million (USD).
Other tropical cyclone activity
Tropical Depression One was the first tropical cyclone to develop during the 2009 Atlantic hurricane season. The depression formed on May 28, out of a disorganized area of low pressure off the coast of North Carolina. However after attaining its peak strength the depression began to weaken due to increasing wind shear and cooling sea surface temperatures with the final advisory being issued on May 29.
- 2009 Pacific typhoon season - In the two month period, there were four tropical cyclones, all within a short time period and small area. Tropical Depression Crising moved through the Philippines but didn't develop. Typhoon Kujira formed over the Philippines, causing 29 deaths and almost $30 million in damage, before becoming the equivalent of a Category 4 hurricane. While Kujira was active, a tropical depression formed and dissipated over the open ocean, while Typhoon Chan-hom developed and organized in the South China Sea, eventually crossing Luzon and causing 60 deaths and heavy damage.
- North Indian - Aside from Aila, Cyclone Bijli formed in April, making landfall on Bangladesh and killing 7 people.
- South Indian– Cyclone Jade was the final Cyclone to form. Jade formed on April 5th from a tropical disturbance it quickly intensifed and bcame a category one tropical cyclone on the SSHS before making its first of three landfalls on Madagascar. Jade then dissipated on April 11 after causing fifteen deaths.
- Australian Region - Cyclone Kirrly formed on April 25 in the Arafura Sea to the north of Australia within 5 degrees of the equator which is an unusual area of formation. It quickly reached its peak before making landfall on eastern Indonesia.
- South Pacific - As the last newsletter was published Tropical Cyclone Lin was just devloping as Tropical depression 14F. Lin eventually went on to affect Fiji and Tonga causing at least $1000 worth of damage. Tropical Disturbance 15F also formed this month within the Solomon Islands. It moved eventually moved into the Australian Region but was not monitored by TCWC Brisbane as anything higher than an area of low pressure.
Member of the month
The member of the month is Jason Rees, who joined Wikipedia in 2007, and has written nine tropical cyclone GA's. Jason primarily focuses on Southern Hemisphere storms, as well as the Western Pacific. He has plans for featured topics for several seasons, but for now, he is a regular member of the project who adds his input in discussions on the talk page. We thank Jason for his work, and we look forward to more articles!

Project News
There is debate as usual with regards to notability, as well as the status of the project in general, but nothing new is going on.
During the last week, some editors have organized a page — Wikipedia:WikiProject Tropical cyclones/Viewed stats — that has a listing of monthly page views within the project. It is under construction, although it is complete for all Eastern Pacific tropical cyclones, as well as all Atlantic tropical cyclones from 1979 to the present. Interestingly, the top 6 viewed EPAC articles are all featured, and all of the top 16 in the basin are GA's. Unfortunately, the Atlantic, at least from 1979 to the present, is much worse, despite being viewed much, much more. The top eight-viewed Atlantic articles all are viewed more than 10,000 times per month, for a total of 363889 views per month, but only two of them are featured, and none of the others are GA. As always, any help in the retired storms would be greatly appreciated.
Somewhat tying into the bettering of project articles, the basin article challenge is still ongoing. Hurricanehink is currently in the lead with a GA in 2 basins. Cyclonebiskit is in 2nd, with one GA in the EPAC. The challenge is still open to anyone, and it is not so much a race, rather a challenge just to get a fairly important GA in each basin.
1996 PHS
[edit]I've noticed that you started the 1996 Pacific hurricane season timeline, as soon as I am done fixing up the timelines for 1974, 1995, 2002, and 2003, would you like some help with it (1996)?

WikiCup participates in the Wikipedia:The Great Wikipedia Dramaout
[edit]Hello all, iMatthew here. I just wanted to let you know about "The Great Wikipedia Dramaout" which starts this Saturday. The goal of the Dramaout is to spend five days working on improving articles and abstaining from any of Wikipedia's drama. I don't think that any of you will have a problem focusing on articles for five days, because of course, any work you get done during the Dramaout will count towards your score in the WikiCup. Details are on the page; hope to see you all signing up! :) iMatthew talk at 00:27, 17 July 2009 (UTC)

From the editors
In recent months, the project has become increasingly inactive; with only a few active participants, we need your help for the upcoming hurricane season! Feel free to contact Juliancolton (talk · contribs), Jason Rees (talk · contribs), or Cyclonebiskit (talk · contribs) for more information. Thanks! Storm of the month Hurricane Carlos was the third named storm of the 2009 Pacific hurricane season. Tropical Depression Four-E formed on July 10, and was quickly upgraded to Tropical Storm Carlos. On July 11, the storm strengthened into a minimal Category 1 hurricane. Following a series of intensity fluctuations, Carlos peaked as a Category 2 hurricane with winds of 105 mph (165 km/h). The storm subsequently began to weaken, and on July 16, Carlos degenerated into a remnant low. The cyclone had no known effects on land. Other tropical cyclone activity
Member of the month The member of the month is Plasticup (talk · contribs). Plasticup was inactive for most of the winter; however, upon returning this month, he quickly resumed work. Among his recent works are Meteorological history of Hurricane Gustav, a Good Article, and Tropical Storm Gamma (2005), a Good Article nominee. Plasticup was also designated member of the month in July 2008. New members There were no new members in July. However, four users re-joined the project after being listed as inactive: New and improved articles
Main Page content Hurricane Ioke appeared on the main page in the Today's Featured Article section on July 22. Tropical Storm Dottie (1976) and Tropical Storm Hallie (1975) appeared on the main page in the Did You Know? section on July 13 and July 24, respectively. Article statistics
Project News SchuminWeb (talk · contribs) pointed out towards the end of the month that hurricane disambiguation pages are often over-categorized. Efforts are currently underway to address this. A discussion is underway at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/Timeline of the 1987 Atlantic hurricane season/archive1 regarding the use of HURDAT as a reference. Input is appreciated. - If you are trying to edit via 'google translate', then that probaly won't work - it looks like you want to edit es:Huracán Norbert (2008) on the Spanish Wikipedia, is that correct? If you have questions about the Spanish Wikipedia, you need to ask on there.
- If you have further questions about the English Wikipedia, please ask them here, and use a further helpme. Chzz ► 20:11, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- The problem is that I am trying to translate the Preps/Impact of es:Huracán Norbert (2008) to the English Wikipedia, not Spanish. Leave Message, Yellow Evan home
- Ah, yes, I see - sorry about that. OK...
- I have removed the parts that the edit filter objected to, and put it into User:Yellow Evan/Hurricane Norbert.
- I started to tidy it up a bit; I expect you can work on it from there. Chzz ► 20:28, 4 October 2009 (UTC)
- (P.S. The parts that it objected to was just the google translation code, so I hope all the content will be there. Chzz ► 20:30, 4 October 2009 (UTC))

Not only is the english very bad due to the way you just tagged it on to another sentance, what you added is so paraphrased that it actually does not convey what was originally said, specifically the low wind shear. Re: Arena Football League
[edit]While it may not be reflected at the league's website (which hasn't been updated in over 6 months), the original Arena Football League is most certainly dead, as is it's "minor league" affiliate af2. This is reflected in the formation of a new league featuring some of the AFL's remaining teams, Arena Football 1, which was announced about a month ago. Here's a link to the ESPN article on the announcement. [1] oknazevad (talk) 04:16, 1 November 2009 (UTC)

- I rv'd your pass because you don't seem to be actually reviewing them. Read over other people's GA reviews and get a better idea of what to look for. I know you're doing this in good faith but you have to do them properly, otherwise don't. Wizardman 18:51, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- I echo Wizardmans comments in that you didnt review the article properly. Jason Rees (talk) 20:23, 8 November 2009 (UTC)
- In the case of the Bucs' season, if you did in fact review it, you have to finish all the steps of passing it, not just saying it passes and putting it on GA (gotta fix the talk page template and put the right one up, for example). Wizardman 21:19, 8 November 2009 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. I am contacting you on behalf of the WikiCup judges because you were involved in our previous points polling. Though most of the polls are now closed, we have restarted polls relating to the points value for both valued pictures and in the news entries. 2010 WikiCup Signups Reconfirmation!
[edit]To ensure that everyone who signed up is still committed to participating in the 2010 WikiCup, it is required that you remove your name from this list! By removing your name, you are not removing yourself from the WikiCup. This is simply a way for the judges to take note of who has not yet reconfirmed their participation. If you have not removed your name from that list by December 30th, 2009 (by 23:59 (UTC)) then your name will be removed from the WikiCup.
It's worth noting the rules have changed, likely after you signed up. The changes made thus far are:
- Mainspace and/or portal edits will not be awarded points at all.
- Did you know? articles (which were worth 5 points last year) will now be worth 10 points.
- Good articles (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
- Valued pictures will be now awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
- Featured lists (which were worth 30 points last year) will now be worth 40 points.
- Featured portals (which were worth 25 points last year) will now be worth 35 points.
- Featured articles (which were worth 50 points last year) will now be worth 100 points.
- Featured topics (which were worth 10 points per article last year) will now be worth 15 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
- Good topics (which were worth 5 points per article last year) will now be worth 10 points per any article in the topic that you were a major contributor to.
- In the news will still be awarded points, however the amount (5 or 10 points) is still being discussed.
If you have any final concerns about the WikiCup's rules and regulations, please ask them now, before the Cup begins to avoid last minute problems. You may come to the WikiCup's talk page, or any of the judge's user talk pages. We're looking forwards to a great 2010 WikiCup! Help me
[edit]{{Helpme}} why does the template on User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox not work?Leave Message, Yellow Evan home
- Ciao, Evan. Your sandbox appears to be a transclusion of {{6TeamBracket-Cust}}. That template appears to work fine in articles such as Canadian Soccer League (1987–1992), where it's parameters are filled in. The reason it is not working at your sandbox is because you have left the parameters blank. For information on how to use the parameters as intended, see the template documentation page. Hope this helps, Skomorokh 17:10, 5 December 2009 (UTC)

{{Helpme}} fix the ref tag for Jerry West
- It's fixed. The first time a reference is used, you can give it a name for later use. That first naming is in the form <ref name-name>text of reference</ref> The next time you want to use it you only need to supply the first part and add a closign slash, in the form <ref name-name /> What you did was remove the text of the reference and you added a closing slash to the first naming, so there was no longer any reference for that name.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 20:36, 19 December 2009 (UTC)

- Rollback may be removed at any time.
If you do not want rollback, then contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some information on how to use rollback, you can view this page. The 2010 WikiCup begins tomorrow!
[edit]Welcome to the biggest WikiCup Wikipedia has yet seen! Round one will take place over two months, and finish on February 26. There is only one pool, and the top 64 will progress. The competition will be tough, as more than half of the current competitors will not make it to round 2. Details about scoring have been finalized and are explained at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Scoring. Please make sure you're familiar with the scoring rules, because any submissions made that violate these rules will be removed. Like always, the judges can be reached through the WikiCup talk pages, on their talk page, or over IRC with any issues concerning anything tied to the Cup. We will keep in contact with you via weekly newsletters; if you do not want to receive them, please remove yourself from the list here. Conversely, if a non-WikiCup participant wishes to receive the newsletters, they may add themselves to that list. Well, enough talk- get writing! Your submission's page is located here. Details on how to submit your content is located here, so be sure to check that out! Once content has been recognized, it can be added to your submissions page, from which our bot will update the main score table. Remember that only articles worked on and nominated during the competition are eligible for points. Have fun, and good luck! Garden, iMatthew, J Milburn, and The ed17 19:25, 31 December 2009 (UTC)
UNLV rankings
[edit]if you want to include both ap and coaches poll for their rankings change the bottom of the table to reflect that you are showing both, but the way it is set up the bottom of the schedule says ap poll, thus thats what it should show. i dont care if both are included as long as it says what both rankings reflect. i just tend to go with what the majority of the other college basketball pages use and thats the ap poll. and as for the ranking on the template with the mountain west standings those should be ap. all the other templates use ap in not only college basketball but college football as well.Bsuorangecrush (talk) 01:53, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

WikiCup 2010 January newsletter
[edit]We are half way through round one of the WikiCup. We've had some shakeups regarding late entries, flag changes and early dropouts, but the competition is now established- there will be no more flag changes or new competitors. Congratulations to Sasata (submissions), our current leader, who, at the time of writing, has more listed points than Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions) (second and third place respectively) combined. A special well done also goes to Fetchcomms (submissions)- his artcle Jewel Box (St. Louis, Missouri) was the first content to score points in the competition.
Around half of competitors are yet to score. Please remember to submit content soon after it is promoted, so that the judges are able to review entries. 64 of the 149 current competitors will advance to round 2- if you currently have no points, do not worry, as over half of the current top 64 have under 50 points. Everyone needs to get their entries in now to guarantee their places in round 2! If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! Your article's being reviewed - a lot of stuff there to address. :) f o x (formerly garden) 20:34, 26 February 2010 (UTC)
- No you haven't. Remaining problems/ones I've noticed:
- There has been no attempt to expand the lead as I requested.
- "These included low-scoring games (there was no shot clock at that time), poor attendance, and scheduling conflicts. This is because many teams shared arenas with hockey teams." makes it sound like all those problems were caused by the shared arenas. I doubt the low attendance was.
- Please explain how "pondered" is more encyclopaedic than "wondered"?
- There are a lot of one-sentence paragraphs around. merge them.
- In regards to google, go here. There are about 30 very useful sources I can see, particularly this. Ironholds (talk) 16:39, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

[edit]Round one is over, and round two has begun! Congratulations to the 64 contestants who have made it through, but well done and thank you to all contestants who took part in our first round. A special well done goes to Sasata (submissions), our round one winner (1010 points), and to Hunter Kahn (submissions) and TonyTheTiger (submissions), who were second and third respectively (640 points/605 points). Sasata was awarded the most points for both good articles (300 points) and featured articles (600 points), and TonyTheTiger was awarded the most for featured topics (225 points), while Hunter Kahn claimed the most for good topics (70). Staxringold (submissions) claimed the most featured lists (240 points) and featured pictures (35 points), Geschichte (submissions) claimed the most for Did you know? entries (490 points), Jujutacular (submissions) claimed the most for featured sounds (70 points) and Candlewicke (submissions) claimed the most for In the news entries (40 points). No one claimed a featured portal or valued picture.
Credits awarded after the end of round one but before round two may be claimed in round two, but remember the rule that content must have been worked on in some significant way during 2010 by you for you to claim points. The groups for round two will be placed up shortly, and the submissions' pages will be blanked. This round will continue until 28 April, when the top two users from each group, as well as 16 wildcards, will progress to round three. Please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup; thank you to all doing this last round, and particularly to those helping at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, by email or on IRC. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. WikiCup 2010 March newsletter
[edit]We're half way through round two, and everything is running smoothly. Hunter Kahn (submissions) leads overall with 650 points this round, and heads pool B. TonyTheTiger (submissions) currently leads pool C, dubbed the "Group of Death", which has a only a single contestant yet to score this round (the fewest of any group), as well five contestants over 100 points (the most). With a month still to go, as well as 16 wildcard places, everything is still to play for. Anything you worry may not receive the necessary attention before the end of the round (such as outstanding GA or FA nominations) is welcome at Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews, and please remember to continue offering reviews yourself where possible. As always, the judges are available to contact via email, IRC or their talk pages, and general discussion about the Cup is welcome on the WikiCup talk page.
Although unrelated to the WikiCup, April sees a Good Article Nominations backlog elimination drive, formulated as a friendly competition with small awards, as the Cup is. Several WikiCup contestants and judges have already signed up, but regular reviewers and those who hope to do more reviewing are more than welcome to join at the drive page. If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. {{helpme}} Will an admin move User:Yellow Evan/Sandbox to Hurricane Madeline (1976)

Scottie Pippen
[edit]Minor- Pippen's highest 3pt % (.374) for a season seems not to be bolded, a lower percentage (.368) the year after he recorded his highest 3pt % is bolded instead. I double-checked his stats on ESPN.com, both numbers are correct for their respective years... the seasons were the 95-96 and 96-97 seasons.
I would correct it myself but I am not familiar with editing boxes.
thanks,
