What this doesn't address is that there's a risk a CU "check for sleepers" -- legitimately applied to another editor -- could end up "hitting" the returned editor regardless of how copacetic there new behavior has been. NE Ent 17:51, 12 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Not really. The "check for sleepers" happens when sockpuppetry has been spotted, and clears out any other accounts the sock master might have. Assuming the person is quietly returning properly, he won't be spotted, there won't be any reason for them to be checked. A check for sleepers on an unrelated account won't turn up the quietly returning account, only related accounts. WormTT(talk) 10:27, 14 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
We lost an admin due to incidental checks. (Out of respect for the hapless editors caught up in the saga, I've emailed you a link rather than posting onwiki). Also a routine check at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Evilkingzarkon/Archive linked three accounts that were transiently blocked as socks Wikipedia:Sockpuppet_investigations/Hhighimpact059/Archive despite the fact they had zero overlapping edits -- fortunately the blocking admin is one of the more reasonable folks around here and was willing to unblock after I asked them to (although only one of three accounts has remained active).
