[edit]I see - is that new on WP:EL? I don't recall reading that specific note some weeks back. Coincidentally, I added some Youtube links to another article today - historical footage. How does one tell whether the content is a copyright violation or not? --G2bambino 04:44, 22 February 2007 (UTC)
Heat conduction comments
[edit]First, an in-line comment <-- is ended with -->. By trying to end it with !> you made the article disappear! (wow)
Second, why wouldn't you put the comment into the article's talk page? That way people could discuss... Shenme 07:10, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the Greetings (and the Cookies)
[edit]Sorry about the clumsy attempt(s) at putting that image into my article, I've never done it before and it required a few tries on my part. As for the cookies, they look delicious and though I can't eat them, it's the thought that counts. Matthew Cadrin 07:57, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Edit summary
[edit]Hey,
Sorry about not providing an edit summary. I will do so in the future. I'm new at this and actually trying to help and contribute when I know something. I will do so from now on. Thanks. I also fixed the things under the pictures I added for the UTMB article (I think). Will you check to make sure that it is all working alright. Thanks for your help.
Thefinalprophecy 08:54, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
I did click on the plus tab and it took me here. Anyway, thanks for your help.

removed with reason
[edit]Your entry in my talk said "please login under that account and proceed to make the changes." and when I went to that page you had already made those changes, it was no longer a valid warning and I deleted it. And I left a message on his talk page explaining that, you should have seen this before sending your second warning. (Floppydog66 13:14, 23 February 2007 (UTC)) for a place that likes help from new people you sure complain alot and don't bother to check back to see if the error has been corrected.
Re: Layout problems on your user page
[edit]Hello will Pittenger, well I am not familiar with these codes but I added them to my page, actually if u want u can do these changes if that necessary.. Thanks again --Aziz1005 16:36, 23 February 2007 (UTC)
Your comment on user talk page policy
[edit]I noticed that you posted a comment on Village Pump about the ambiguous nature of user talk page usage policy. I'm of the opinion that user talk pages are a community resource, especially in the case of vandalism warnings. I'm planning to initiate discussion on the possibility of defining a policy on what is and what is not proper behavior when it comes to deleting vandalism warnings on one's own talk page. Let me know if you are interested in this debate and I'll let you know when it is open for discussion again. -- Mufka (user) (talk) (contribs) 00:03, 24 February 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Hello, thanx for your help and about what i though; I thought what i did was not enough to fix the problem thats why i asked you to do it if what i did was wrong ..thanks again--Aziz1005 02:43, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the Welcome and...
[edit]Sorry about the login. I had assumed I was logged in when in fact I hadn't. Sorry again and thanks for the cookies. Kisholi 07:05, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Hey Will, thank you for the message you left for me. I do always sign my posts on Talk Pages, etc., but I wasn't quite certain of the protocol when leaving warnings. I'd seen other warnings posted without signatures, and I wasn't sure if they were supposed to be anon, like Wikiquette Alerts. Thanks for clearing that up--I've recently joined the Counter-Vandalism Unit efforts, and I'd like to help instead of hinder, so I do appreciate the helpful advice. Best, DanielEng 07:25, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Sorry miss understanding
[edit]I was not trying to vandalize that page, I was trying to see what it was. I thought it was some kind of sandbox, I still have no Idea what that page is. I am not a new user and have been trying to sing all of my posts but some times I forget, I to help fight vandalism with my free time I watch the RS feed for vandalism, it is kind of sad how many people attack pages or just blank pages, for what ever reason, So have a nice day. p.s. cool user boxes I have tryed to make some my self. Max 18:10, 25 February 2007 (UTC)
Thanks for the concerns
[edit]Thank you for the concern. I am fairly new to editing Wikipedia, though I have been registered for quite a bit. I had been experimenting with my userpage from a different computer, one that I normally don't use and wasn't logged in at the moment, thus the reason why it appeared that another IP was editing it. I have created all changes that I wanted and restored it to the version I want. This has also been noted in reply on my own page. Thanks alot BogdanM02 06:57, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
My edit to Jimmy Carter
[edit]Will, my edit did remove the YouTube link (as well as add the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} template). Someone (which I now see was you) had already RV'ed the link out prior to me submitting my edit, but my summary was accurate at the sime I hit the "Save page" button. Because of the length of my edit summary when I do a revert, sometimes I cannot list all of the extra formatting tweaks I do.
If you look at my vandalism/recent changes reverts to biography articles, you'll see that I take the extra time to add in the {{DEFAULTSORT:}} template if it isn't already there. The unfortunate side to this is that it takes longer to complete my edit, and other RC patrollers — especially those using bots (like yourself) — get their RV's in faster than me. RE: Fair use images aren't allowed in user pages
[edit]I found you are using the fair use images listed below on your user page. As per Rule #9 of the fair use image rules, you will need to remove those image. You can link to them, but not display them. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.
If you don't understand why this is nessecary, you can ask the administrator Durin. He is better at explaining the problem than I am. You could also go to the policy portion of the village pump and ask there.
- The list
- Image:Jove logo.png
- Image:Amarr logo.png
- Image:Caldari logo.png
- Image:Minmatar logo.png
- Image:Gallente logo.png
- Image:Cairns City Council.jpg
- Image:Beep industries.png
I will probably check back in a day or so to verify the images were either removed or converted into links. If you need help making the change, let me know. Will (Talk - contribs) 07:55, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Greetings, thankyou for placing the above on my talk page - most other people would have just deleted the images. I will be speaking to Durin because I personally believe that I do have a right to display them, as they are my own work. For the Jove, Amarr, Caldari, Minmatar, and Gallente logos, they are not registered trademarks, but rather are logos for ingame races for the Eve-Online MMORPG and are often used for promotional events and (CCP hf sanctioned) fan art. Re the Cairns City Council logo, I work for the council and I also recreated the orginal artwork for them. I also recreated the Beep Industries logo, so again, I believe I should have some right to display it. However I will be speaking to the admin as you suggested. Fosnez 08:16, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Will is correct. I'm sorry, but even if you recreated the images the original copyright holder retains rights to the image. In the recreation, you too have rights but you can not release the rights of the original copyright holder nor can they release yours. In essence, the images become utterly unusable without both parties consenting to a given use. Also, per Wikipedia:Fair use criteria item #9, we do not permit the use of fair use images outside of the main article namespace even if it is legal to do so. The images need to be removed from your userpage. I hope this helps to clarify. If you have additional questions, feel free to ask. --Durin 13:34, 26 February 2007 (UTC)
- Another user asked about that in the Village pump. The converstation is gone now. But I found it at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:Village_pump_%28policy%29&oldid=104681069#Partially_owned_images_on_user_pages. He deleted the images. Will (Talk - contribs) 06:27, 28 February 2007 (UTC)
- I have created an entry on the village pump, please place your comments there. Fosnez 07:37, 28 February 2007 (UTC)

Georgia flag
[edit]Hi Will,
Just came across your page (from the Userbox talk page), and noticed your flags. I have them on my page too, and I live in Canada. But you have a mistake on your flag list, and it is a common one. You have the wrong flag for the state of Georgia. The flag you have now is for the country of Georgia, south of Russia. I had the same problem myself.
Best wishes.--RobNS 17:49, 10 April 2007 (UTC)

Commons "copyvio"
[edit]Just a heads up. I tagged Image:Wookipedia Logo.png as a copyvio on Commons per Commons:Derivative works. --Sherool (talk) 13:55, 29 April 2007 (UTC)
- Hi, sorry if I was not clear enough. Yes the image is tagged as GFDL licensed on Wookipedia (so are a lot of other plainly non-free images, theyr admins seem to be having a hard time keeping it "clean"), but it also says it's based on a screenshot from Return of the Jedi. Unless the person who created the logo also own the copyright to Return of the Jedi then he does not have exclusive rights to the work and can not release it under the GFDL. They can probably make a fair use case for the logo, but Commons does not accept fair use. --Sherool (talk) 23:05, 29 April 2007 (UTC)

Image copyright problem with Image:Crude UM logo legal for User pages.PNG
[edit]Thank you for uploading Image:Crude UM logo legal for User pages.PNG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. Rklawton 16:47, 12 June 2007 (UTC)
Template trouble
[edit]I saw you seem to know quite about making templates...so I was wondering if you know whether it's possible to make a template apply a category only when the template is being used in the User: namespace? Thanks. --Tim4christ17 talk 20:52, 18 June 2007 (UTC)

Christmas Tree icons
[edit]Dear Will,
At commons you requested Christmas Tree icons. I don't have any myself, but I did find a lot of them (also *.ICO) using just a Google query. Perhaps the most interesting link was this one whic has a set of Christmas icons including a tree... Good luck!

Replaceable fair use Image:Andrew_Peterson.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:Andrew_Peterson.JPG. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:
- Go to the image description page and edit it to add
{{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}
, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template. - On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.
Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 7 days after this notification, per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 11:48, 12 July 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image:Caedmon's_Call.JPG
[edit]Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Caedmon's_Call.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Videmus Omnia Talk 23:33, 24 July 2007 (UTC)

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:WCIC Logo.png
[edit]Thanks for uploading Image:WCIC Logo.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.
If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 05:08, 21 January 2008 (UTC)
