Speedy deletion nomination of IBM Communication Service Enablers (ICSE)

The article IBM WebSphere XML Document Management Server has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:
- no evidence that this is notable enough for an encyclopedia article; Wikipedia is not an IBM product catalogue

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}}
notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.
Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}}

Problems with editing
[edit]Hello, Wikiuser164, and welcome to editing Wikipedia. I have been looking at your editing history, and unfortunately I have seen a number of problems. Firstly,there are the problems of conflict of interest and promotion, which have already been mentioned in messages above. Wikipedia is not a medium for businesses to publicise their products, which is very much the way your editing has looked. It is doubtful whether most of the products you have written about are notable enough to warrant articles about each of them in an enyclopaedia, and, even if they are, the way they are written about in the literature of the company is not the way that is appropriate to write about them in an encyclopaedia. JohnCD has, I think, summed it up well in saying "Wikipedia is not an IBM product catalogue". Secondly, I have discovered that many, perhaps all, of the articles you have written have been substantially copies of IBM material, which on the face of it constitutes infringement of copyright. Since you are working for IBM, you may have the company's permission to post the material to Wikipedia, but it is not as simple as that. For one thing, any material posted to Wikipedia is freely licensed under very broad terms for reuse. If a business permits their material to be published on Wikipedia then they also give permission for that material to be reused, either as it is or edited, by anyone anywhere for commercial or non-commercial purposes. It is doubtful whether many companies are willing to do that. IBM's terms of use say "This site and all content in this site may not be copied, reproduced, republished, uploaded, posted, transmitted, distributed, or used for the creation of derivative works without IBM's prior written consent, except that IBM grants you non-exclusive, non-transferable, limited permission to access and display the Web pages within this site, solely on your computer and for your personal, non-commercial use of this Web site. This permission is conditioned on your not modifying the content displayed on this site, your keeping intact all copyright, trademark, and other proprietary notices, and your acceptance of any terms, conditions, and notices accompanying the content or otherwise set forth in this site." That is totally incompatible with Wikipedia's licensing terms. For another thing, anyone can create a Wikipedia account and claim to be anyone, so we cannot accept the unsupported word of a Wikipedia editor that they have copyright permission. I can give you a link to a page that explains how to grant copyright permission to the Wikimedia Foundation, but I think that doing so would be a waste of time. In my experience, when that is done the person involved invariably spends time and trouble going through the procedure of giving copyright clearance, only to find that the material is deleted again for other reasons, most commonly promotion. Material from a business's web site is almost never suitable for posting in an encyclopaedia article, because it is written from a different point of view than the one required.
The kind of problems I have been describing are, in fact, among the reasons why Wikipedia's conflict of interest guideline strongly discourages us from writing articles on subjects in which we have a close personal involvement, such as the companies we work for. Apart from people who try to abuse Wikipedia for outright spam purposes, even those who genuinely wish to write objectively about their own businesses or products commonly have difficulty in standing far enough back to see what they are writing from an objective perspective. We also have to add to that to the doubts about whether the products you have written about individually have sufficient notability to be subjects of Wikipedia articles. Hi John, I have re-written the ICSE page in Sandbox - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Wikiuser164/sandbox. Could you please check if this is fine for posting on Wikipedia? - You posted this question on my talk page, starting "Hi James," so I copied it to JamesBWatson's talk page. I also gave you my answer there, see User talk:JohnCD#IBM product pages, but I will repeat it here for your reference. No, it is not fine, because:
- all your references are IBM, but to establish notability needs references to "significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject",
- Wikipedia is not an IBM product catalogue, and
- as you work for IBM you have a strong conflict of interest, and should not be writing about its products even if they were notable. Leave it until somebody not connected with IBM thinks it interesting enough to write about.
- The Websphere article you cite doesn't seem to me any better, though it has been around longer: I have tagged it for lack of independent sources.
- It does not seem that you have read the careful advice which JamsBWatson took the trouble to give you above. Please read it now.
- By the way, the "talkback" tag is meant to be posted on someone else's talk page, to tell them that there is a message for them here. There is no point putting it on your own talk page, where no one else will see it unless they have come here anyway. JohnCD (talk) 10:22, 3 November 2011 (UTC)
