Thanks
Thanks for the welcome. I have much work yet to do here... and am basically new and clumsy at the use/editing of Wiki pages.

Thanks for the welcome, WSC. I like the place so much I might register for an account - who knows, I may even make admin someday! 163.1.174.65 (talk) 21:04, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

- Ah, that's a sensible idea. Regarding London: I'm sorely tempted, but it's likely I'll be visiting Cambridge that weekend. I do have to go through London on the way home (thanks to our lovely rail network - not enough graph theoreticians at the Department for Transport) but that probably won't be until the early evening. You've been to previous ones I believe - how long do they tend to go on? Olaf Davis (talk) 21:13, 5 January 2010 (UTC)

You actually just beat me to the block of Donnyduo or whatever his name was, I had a look and the contributions form the account were nothing but trouble. Congrats for getting there first though! ;) TomStar81 (Talk) 17:56, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Tom, long time no speak, hope all is going well. Yes I spotted one self revert in his edits, but the four deleted attack pages were more than enough. PS I haven't read a new article of yours for a while, but I don't always watchlist FAC - feel free to drop me a note if you have something ready for a copy edit. ϢereSpielChequers 18:01, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Its been a long while since I had anything new up at FAC - probably going on a year, now that I think about it. What with school and all I really shifted focus off wiki for while. I'm hoping to get a few articles up at FAC this year though, so I'll keep you in mind when the time comes for a copyedit. Take care! TomStar81 (Talk) 18:23, 18 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well, it ain't FAC, but I could use a copy editor over at Iowa class battleship; the page is up at FAR at the moment and copy editing has been an issue, to the point where the article got tagged for copy editing. If your up to it I would appreciate it :) TomStar81 (Talk) 11:06, 26 January 2010 (UTC)

Only saw this just now, and couldn't help noticing that Eid can occur at any season in the calendar, and has absolutely no lasting association with winter... AnonMoos (talk) 15:32, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- It it called 'Dec09', though - he's got a while to think of a replacement before it slips out of winter. Olaf Davis (talk) 15:41, 22 January 2010 (UTC)
- It was perfect for Dec 2008 and just a little late for December 2009, but yes I'll need a different one for 2010. However it isn't just winter - I do try to word it to apply equally well for our marsupial colleagues. ϢereSpielChequers 17:10, 22 January 2010 (UTC)

David Irving: Reality of Holocaust
Hi. I see you reverted my edit on the above article. Can you explain your reasons for doing so because your edit summary is not clear to me. I thought the whole purpose of Holocaust Denial meant precisely that one disputes what the "reality" is. If anything would warrant such sweeping conclusions, there would be no such thing as denial of anything. I have read the paragraph two or three times and unless I am mistaken, I see no requirement for the extra words concerning the content itself. Evlekis (talk) 10:17, 23 January 2010 (UTC)
I see you have edited since I sent you the above note. Please address the issue or I will return to the article and restore my original edit. I am not engaging in an edit war at this stage but I am not about to see a good faith effort reverted with no discussion. Evlekis (talk) 14:31, 23 January 2010 (UTC)

You know more about the flagged edits petition more than anyone I think. Thanks. Ikip 01:46, 27 January 2010 (UTC)
- Well I was one of the first to sign it and I made the userbox, but I just happened to spot it almost as soon as it started - I had no prior knowledge that the petition was going to be started. As for oppose sections in petitions, I think they may not fully state the opposition as some opposers will simply refuse to sign much as they wouldn't sign an offline petition; But otherwise I think that petitions on wiki should have oppose sections. Rottnan
Thanks for the help with Rottnan! How should i do with the Norwegian name of the river? Now i have the Swedish name Rottnan at the Category:Rivers of Norway instead of the Norwegian name Rotna? Gräsmark (talk) 13:56, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hi you're welcome. I've created Rotna as a redirect so the article now supports both names, and I've categorised the redirect as that is the solution in Wikipedia:Categorization for this sort of situation. ϢereSpielChequers 14:09, 1 February 2010 (UTC)
- Mind you the category Category:Rivers of Norway needs changing as it is a master category for subcategories of rivers by region. Category:Rivers of Sweden looks OK though as that has not been subcategorised. ϢereSpielChequers 14:15, 1 February 2010 (UTC)

Quick question
Hi, I have a question on something I have never come across before. On the revision history of Ghana [1] one of the revisions (15:14, 4 February 2010)is struck out and inaccessible, what is that about and how is it done? Thanks. --blue520 15:38, 4 February 2010 (UTC)

Who
Is User:Blinding Lights and which cowardly regular editor created the sock? I want something done about this. → ROUX ₪ 17:48, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Roux. I agree with you that from their one edit there is a very good chance that they are a sockpuppet or meatpuppet. However as they have only made the one edit that I reverted and warned them about, to my mind a block would seem a little harsh, and I doubt that they have yet done enough to merit a checkuser investigation. Which is a roundabout way of saying that I'm afraid I don't know who they are, and there is little that I can do about it. If any of the pages in your userspace are being repeatedly vandalised I could semi-protect them for you, but I can't really do that for the first instance of vandalism. ϢereSpielChequers 18:15, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- There was similar IP vandalism to my user talk. Which should be enough to have a CU find sleepers, and find the main account. And, frankly, block the fucking hell out of them for such cowardly bullshit. → ROUX ₪ 18:18, 10 February 2010 (UTC)
- OK well if you think you have enough for WP:SPI then good luck with that. I did check blinding light's other edits and looked for any deleted ones, but I didn't look for other accounts vandalising other pages of yours. ϢereSpielChequers 18:27, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Question regarding page move
I'm looking for some guidance on a page move, where I admit I have very little experience. It appears that Alberta Meda should be moved to Alberto Meda. The Alberto article is a poor, unreferenced version of the same individual, yet it appears to have the more common usage of the name (80,000 ghits vs. 2,750). As both articles and talk pages already exist, I'm not sure how to go about moving the pages...Any help you could provide would be appreciated. Cheers, --Jezebel'sPonyoshhh 18:55, 18 February 2010 (UTC)
- OK It requires deleting one, moving the other to it and then restoring the edits of the first. I've done that and hopefully pulled the best bits of both together. I've also tagged it as lacking footnotes. ϢereSpielChequers 21:40, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Hi
Hey WereSpielChequers :), and thanks again for protecting my page. I was wondering if I could get your input on the dispute going on at Talk: Younus AlGohar. Basically its primarily an ongoing dispute (at least a couple of months) between User: Falconkhe and myself over the subject's credibility and controversies relating to them. This dispute has pretty much been carrying over to various talk pages relating to this subject (i.e Talk: Messiah Foundation International, Talk: RAGS International, Talk: The Representative of Imam Mehdi, Talk: The Representative of Gohar Shahi, Wikipedia: Wikiquette alerts, this noticeboard, and our talk pages). The issue, it seems, is that the editor has a COI with this subject (an apparent follower of Riaz Ahmed Gohar Shahi from Pakistan and strongly opinionated critic of AlGohar) and seems to have mistook my comments that did not agree with their ideas about Younus AlGohar (i.e. my questioning of the claim that AlGohar is a terrorist, among other things they claimed without providing the necessary references) to mean that I am personally affiliated with AlGohar, and have thus seemed to take every one of my edits to articles relating to him personally (like this). They have become rather hostile and resorted to edit warring, adding tags when most editors considered it unjustified. I have taken it to Wikiquette, but I think this issue is so much more deep-rooted, and seems to be more of a sectarian issue for the editor. The issue seems to complex to negotiate, so I was wondering if it would be sensible to request arbitration at this stage? If not, could you perhaps direct me to a relevant noticeboard or suggest other ways of dealing with this? I think I'm in over my head here, and advice from a more experienced editor such as yourself would really be appreciated :). I sincerely hope this issue is resolved quickly- thanks in advance! :) Omirocksthisworld(Drop a line) 10:58, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- Please be informed that I have nothing against younus and his organization but Omi & his/her associates were getting personal on above mentioned arlticles. My point of view is that Omi & his/her associates are the main editors of the articles and Omi & his/her associates have no reliable sources to support their claims? The article should be on actuall name rather his alias names or pseudonym or the name he likes for himself. If Omi & his/her associates haven't reliable sources support this article, they should not have started this article but Omi & his/her associates started, which clearly shows their personal linkage with younas or Omi & his/her associates can be younas to promot himself, younus can do anything from sending people behind the bars to reward them death as he did in India and Pakistan. Once again, I would ask either provide reliable resources (Not self published websites) or leave above mentioned articles. Omi & his/her associates are wasting the time of WP administrators, they have nothing except self-published/developed websites. Thanks--Falconkhe (talk) 11:48, 27 February 2010 (UTC)
- OK I'm on a very limited connection this weekend, so I'm afraid I'm going to have to refer you on. If you post a query on the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard someone there can advise as to what constitutes a reliable source. If this chap has multiple names then the normal thing would be to redirect from one to another. Hope that helps. ϢereSpielChequers 00:38, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

WereSpielChequers! We hates it forever. (Well at least until the next update to Wikipedians by number of edits.)
I reckon I was on 9736. That's going by the number that appears on the "my preferences" page less the number of my edits since. The external tool gives numbers that are 16 higher or 47 lower depending on whether deleted edits are included.--Peter cohen (talk) 12:00, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- Only 4 short then! Deleted edits are definitely counted - I should know I must have a couple of thousand now. ϢereSpielChequers 12:15, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- Yes it was the 4 short that got to me. I thought I would check today to see if there was an update. Noticed I was 50 past the new number and when I didn't find myself counted back. I wonder why the external tool produces a higher number.--Peter cohen (talk) 12:24, 2 March 2010 (UTC)
- The raw counts for the top 4,000 are updated weekly in the early hours of Wednesday morning by User:MZMcBride at User:MZMcBride/Sandbox 3. There are a few other things at WP:EDITS, and I only update that every couple of months. Hey WereSpielChequers, how are you? I rolled the dice, but they didn't show "TICKLE" "ARS(E)" (which is probably a good thing), since the article is, as yet, only threatened with deletion by that well-known deletionist BongoMatic. So I'm making a personal plea to help establish notability, and if you could help keeping this article about an obviously notable topic to no more than 1,499 characters, I'd be even more grateful (a DYK nomination could upset the delicate balance of my marriage). Thanks in advance! Drmies (talk) 02:30, 9 March 2010 (UTC)

Nowruz article
Hey WSC, i would like to alert you of a potential edit war at the Nowruz article, where i'm being told that my three verifiable sources backing the claim that this festival is also observed in Somalia is not enough, or worse is Original Research, please have a look, because, there is clearly WP:OWN going on there. --Scoobycentric (talk) 17:43, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- I seems that even a clear note at the top of Nowruz is not enough to remind some users that Nowruz and Nayrouz are not related (neither in etymology, nor in traditions). Alefbe (talk) 19:05, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- Hi this is a long way from being my subject, though I'd love to visit that part of the world. Can I ask you two to try and resolve your differences here, or on the relevant talk page? ϢereSpielChequers 19:34, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
WSC - Its very simple actually; I backed a claim with multiple verifiable sources, but two other editors without concrete justications keep removing these references about this festival of Persian origins observed in Somalia during the new year (not the Coptic festival Nayrouz Alefbe disingenously claims my sources are about). Therefore as an uninvolved wikipedian, you can provide a unbiased take on the situation. --Scoobycentric (talk) 20:00, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- OK, if you insist on including it in that page, you should provide a reliable reference that clearly mentions that native Somalians observe the Persian tradition of Nowruz. Just seeing the word "Nayruz" somewhere in some source is not enough (because it might be related to the Coptic feast). If you can provide a reliable source for your claim, first provide the exact quote in talk:Nowruz, so that its relevance can be verified by other editors. Alefbe (talk) 20:16, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
Not at all, the sources are pretty straightforward highlighting it's observance in Somalia, from the bonfire traditions to the actual name, and therefore they are most definitely not discussing the Coptic feast. Secondly i would have had no problems discussing this on the article's talkpage, but it was you who reverted me and asked for verifiable refs, which i provided, but then for some strange reason they were all dismissed, on difference of spelling(see the section Also called) or outrageous accusations of me trying to project Original research, or worse with no explanations at all, just see your last revert where you removed FOUR sources for an example. Also i haven't broken the 3RR rule because the majority of my edits were unique and contained new material, this does not equal a revert, because it would be illogical for me to add a source to a removed country. Therefore because of this, i feel there is no need to discuss it on the talkpage, because 1) my sources will be dismissed for the most disingeneous reasons and 2) the editors in question have not shown any sort of good-faith or WP:CIVIL at all so why bother? I will let the admin figure this one out based on the evidence laid bare in this discussion and the history page of the article in question. --Scoobycentric (talk) 20:32, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- If the dispute is about whether particular Somalian sources are reliable then the best place to go is the Wikipedia:Reliable sources/Noticeboard. If the dispute is about whether Somalians use Nayruz to refer to Nowruz or Nayrouz then you could try for an uninvolved Somali speaker. I'm afraid my ability to count to three in Masaii doesn't qualify me to comment on this aspect of East African culture. But remember words can mean very different things, especially in different languages. ϢereSpielChequers 20:42, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
WSC - I understand your situation, but let me make it less complicated for you by providing you with straightforward sources from well respected academics:
I.M Lewis about the observance of this festival in Somalia where it is known locally as Dabshid(literally 'light fire'):
None of these groups had substantial holdings of livestock and their culture(admitting a few domesticated sheep and goats and poultry) was decidely urban and in their rituals, focused primarily on the Sea and the ancient (Pre-Islamic) festival nayrus. - pg 10 Understanding Somalia and Somaliland: culture, history, society By Ioan M. Lewis
In another book he goes even further:
Dabshid is probably of Persian origin and is known alternatively as the Neyrus - Peoples of the Horn of Africa: Somali, Afar, and Saho pg 62
another well respected scholar Mohamed Diriye Abdullahi on Dabshid/Neyrus:
Only one pre-Islamic celebration of importance exists: the dabshid(the
lighting of the fire), which marks the beginning of the Somali solar calendar. The calculation of the start of the solar year is made by weather and stellar experts and has a practical value for stock-breeders and farmers. During the dabshid a small bonfire is lit in the evening and everyone is supposed to try to jump over it. Burning sticks from the bonfire are also thrown into the sky.The dabshid also has been referred to as neyruus, a Persian word for the Persian new year (nairuz), due to the use of fire in dabshid, which early Muslims probably took as a fire worship as was the case among pre-Islamic Persians. There is no other evidence of a relationship between the dabshid
and the Persian nairuz.
Edward A. Alpers after giving a very detailed description of the festival in Somalia noted the following in his book East Africa and the Indian Ocean:
This occasion was probably a Mogadishu variant of the Persian Solar New Year celebrations of Neyruus, which was known locally as Istaqfuroow and Ciid Fircoon(Pharoah's festival) and more widely among the Somaali as Dabshiid - pg 77
Clearly from the sources one can deduce that (1 - none of them are discussing the Coptic festival, (2 - There are many different names for this particular festival in Somalia, but the scholars all agree its a variant of Nowruz. To deny this is comparable to saying that the Roman Apollo does not derive from the Greek Apóllōn . This is not Original research as one person claimed, and hence the 3 reverts by Alefbe of my verifiable sources were unjustified.--Scoobycentric (talk) 21:52, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. OK I see that this sounds more like a presumably Zoroastrian festival than a Coptic one. But I don't see unanimity that this was of the same origin, rather: The dabshid also has been referred to as neyruus, a Persian word for the Persian new year (nairuz), due to the use of fire in dabshid, which early Muslims probably took as a fire worship as was the case among pre-Islamic Persians. There is no other evidence of a relationship between the dabshid and the Persian nairuz. Implies to me that the only relationship we can be sure of between the Somali and Persian festivals was that both involved fire and both were in areas that have since become Moslem. Just because early muslims might have treated all fire worshippers as branches of the same religion doesn't mean they were in fact related, - no more than two tribes of moon worshippers might have been. The other two are probablys, so potentially one could go for a mention along the lines of "Some scholars have postulated a link between the dabshid of Somalia and the Persian Neyruus." But its also worth looking at recency of source, is this still a current theory or has it been dropped along with various theories of non-African origin of African phenomena? ϢereSpielChequers 22:15, 26 March 2010 (UTC)
- Welcome. The sources date between the 1960s - 2000s and are still very much relevant. You make a good point with the moon worshippers anology, but i think many of the countries currently included would fall under same principle aswell. In the Somali case, the assertion that it was muslims that dubbed it Neyruus is also a probably by the author. I currently don't have access to a very detailed quote from Virginia Luling on this matter who actually studied and celebrated this festival in person, i will have to get an interloan for this specific book. I like your solution though, that would be sufficient for now, but i feel the article is still very much owned, and it's getting to late at this side of the world for a potential edit war, so thanks anyways! --Scoobycentric (talk) 23:05, 26 March 2010 (UTC)

A week ago you asked if I might refrain from using the "f" word in edit summaries. I wonder where you might have me use the "f" word, if not in edit summaries? Crafty (talk) 13:14, 9 April 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Craftyminion, personally I try to restrict my use of the "f" word to telepathic communications, but as this is an uncensored encyclopaedia I'm sure there are topics where use of the word is appropriate. There are currently 5,883 articles on Wikipedia which contain that word and I would hope that the vast majority do so with good reason. So if you want to use that word on wiki then I'm sure that edits to articles such as this would give such an opportunity. ϢereSpielChequers 13:42, 9 April 2010 (UTC)

Lecanorales tags
Hello. I noticed you've added Lecanorales tags to a couple of the Menegazzia species pages. My concern is that if we add every species in the Lecanorales to this list it will become unmanageable (over 5000 species). But, if we just add families/genera it's much more easy to handle. Do you agree? Then we can still have generic tags on all the species, and the genera will be tagged to the orders so everything is still connected. --User: BC Myles 23 April 2010 —Preceding undated comment added 08:21, 23 April 2010 (UTC).
- I'm sure you're right. But category:Menegazzia is still a redlink. I'm just trying to find the most appropriate category for new articles, so I looked at Menegazzia hypernota and went up the Taxobox until I found one that had a category. As the number of Lecanorales articles increases so subcategories for families and species will be needed, and individual species can then be recategorised. Bot work for Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits
Hey WSC, I saw you are the maintainer of Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by number of edits and the equivalent bot edit count page. I could make a bot in like 10 minutes to do this for you. It would use a database query instead of the dump, which would therefore be more efficient. Would you want me to do this? Tim1357 talk 01:57, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hi, thanks, the bulk of the work is already done by a bot, I just check whether any unflagged bots are in the list the week before I copy it over. So a little work every couple of months, I'm sure a bot could increase the frequency, but that might exacerbate editcountitis..... BTW thanks for that list. One thing you might be able to do with a bot that we can't easily do otherwise would be to sort a graph discussed at Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_adminship/Archive_198#RfA_Stats, it would be interesting to analyse unsuccessful RFAs in separate lines - unsuccessful candidates with less than 2,000 edits, unsuccessful candidates with 2,001 - 4,000 edits and unsuccessful candidates with > 4,000 edits. Of course the edit count we need is at the time of the RFA not today. ϢereSpielChequers 22:50, 10 May 2010 (UTC)
Favour to ask
SpellCheckers, I noticed that you tagged an article created by User:Duncanogi for deletion.
If you look at the section of his talk page just above the notification, you'll see that he's quite unhappy with the edits I've been making to his articles. These edits (as you can see from my edit history) are mostly NPOV removal; image resizing (to thumbnails); removal of non-relevant photos; and removal of unencyclopaedic content.
I've always left clear edit summaries or notes on the talk page to explain why I made those edits, and which policies applied, but he doesn't seem to take notice of them, and claims I am "harassing" him. If he thinks this way because I'm looking over his edits and making lots of changes, that's true: whenever I tag something for deletion or revert an obvious policy breach, I check the editor's history in case they're doing the same thing elsewhere.
I wonder if you could look over my edits or the edit histories of the articles that he and I have both edited and tell me if I'm doing anything wrong. I just don't like being accused of harassment. Simon-in-sagamihara (talk) 07:35, 12 May 2010 (UTC)
- He hasn't edited in five days since your last exchange. But I see three areas of concern, copyright, referencing and notability. I'm hoping that the copyright problems can be resolved as I take "The artist Jo Paliatis has given permission" as a sign that we can resolve things there. I'm now involved in the second of these as I've prodded one of his articles, I suggest we extend a little more good faith here, accept that someone with that amount of problems here can get a little tetchy. Which is a long way of saying no I don't think you've done anything wrong, but don't be surprised if sometimes people respond that way if they are having a hard time on Wikipedia. ϢereSpielChequers 14:25, 13 May 2010 (UTC)
Deletion of editor comments
I wouldn't think it would be WP policy for an editor to delete comments they don't like from talk pages, but this is what's happening [here]. Because it's persistent, I think this is best resolved by an administrator such as yourself. -Micro2
- It was a talkpage comment that attacked another editor, so blanking was the right thing to do. Talkpages are for discussing the improvement of articles, not for being rude to people. ϢereSpielChequers 00:25, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

- On the Internet it can sometimes be difficult to keep debate civilised and collegial. But we are here to write an encyclopaedia, and in order to make this a comfortable environment for people of every generation and culture, its important to keep discussion focussed on articles not fellow editors. An editor whose intemperate comment is removed is welcome to come back and rephrase their comment in terms of how to improve the article. But editors who are attacked and made to feel unwelcome may be lost to Wikipedia. ϢereSpielChequers 07:39, 17 May 2010 (UTC)
- I understand the disadvantages of incivility. My issue was with the approach used to deal with it. Someone could have explained constructive ways for him to express his frustrations, but nobody can set him straight if his words vanish with the only reason given being "rm-wtf". If censorship is WP policy on talk pages, that's fine. With all the incivility I've seen in talk pages, I've never seen this happen before, so, I'm surprised.Micro2 (talk) 04:30, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well I wouldn't claim that wp:Civility is always enforced, but in the example you gave "(ugh, sign your edits, and stop attacking other editors)" struck me as a bit more informative than "rm-wtf". We also have {{uw-npa1}}, {{uw-npa2}}, {{uw-npa3}} and {{uw-npa4}}, so yes the preference is to explain why comments are removed. If someone makes a comment incivilly and it disappears they are of course welcome to rephrase their comment as a civil criticism of the article. ϢereSpielChequers 07:18, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- I wasn't aware of those templates. I see no mention of them in Wikipedia:NPA. I think their use would be a step up. I like your "welcome to rephrase..." comment and think it should be added to {{uw-npa1}}. Wikipedia:NPA states "There is no official policy regarding when or whether most personal attacks should be removed, although it has been a topic of substantial debate". I'd like to read these debates. Do you know where I might find them?Micro2 (talk) 19:22, 19 May 2010 (UTC)
- I'm afraid I don't know where those debates are. I've only been editing for a little over three years, and I suspect that saga was settled in the early days of the wiki. But in my view there is a difference between defending each other and defending oneself - I have been known to ignore the vitriol and respond to the underlying complaint on issues related to me, even where I would simply blank a similar message directed at others. - Thanks, those essays made for some interesting reading. I'd have fixed the repsond on your userpage as well, but I figured you might have a reason to want it there. As for Wikipedia:Administrator review/WereSpielChequers I was a bit nervous about putting myself up for a grilling there, then when I saw how gently others were being treated I sent a note to the opposers on my last RFA, and when that didn't work I mentioned it in a thread at WT RFA. I'm beginning to wonder if I've annoyed fewer people than I'd feared. ϢereSpielChequers 07:04, 6 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hey, thanks. I haven't wrote any user essays in quite some time though, lately I've kind of been out of the loop. During my most active period (late 2008, early 2009) I could be found in a good number of areas and had a perspective on everything that was a bit more tuned in than it is now (granted, I've kept myself aware of going-ons so I'm not exactly a hermit when it comes to Wikipedia); for example, my "personal views on disruptive editing" page was created late at night when I felt really frustrated with everything, though my views have changed very substantially since that time. I've noticed Administrator Review doesn't get a whole lot of activity, but it's definitely a good way of learning ways to improve. Adminship isn't a stress free job by any means, but you handle it pretty well. I doubt you've annoyed anybody, you probably surpassed their expectations if they were in the oppose section. Oh, and thanks for pointing out the typo, which I never even thought of up until now. You're a very observant one! Master&Expert (Talk) 16:50, 6 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks, but there's a red template tag there now saying Template:WikiProject Philology. (I created this when I was editing and Godart and Glanville Price were mentioned and I realised that given all the rubbish we have, these two notable scholars should have articles. Former Admin Survey
Hey WereSpielChequers -- Great meeting you at Wikimania! I'm glad we had a chance to talk about the various issues around newbies and admins on the English Wikipedia.
You may already be aware of this, but in case you aren't, I wanted to let you know that a few folks are doing a survey of Former Administrators on the English Wikipedia. It's similar to the Former Contributors Survey I presented at Wikimania, but targeted towards Admins. Since you've been doing analysis on Admins, I thought I might pass along the info.

Townlands
Reasons why i have articles ending with (townland) or (Maghera) etc. is to prevent problems down the line as many towns in Northern Ireland share their name with related or non-related townlands. There are many townlands that share the same name and a distinction needs to be made for when their articles are created.
Should i keep use of (townland) to townland articles that clash with a settlement, and endings such as (Maghera) for townlands like Lisanamuck which exists in two different parishes; Maghera and Aghadowey?
And in the article you just changed, there are seven different Drumcrows of different histories and origins in Northern Ireland alone. Mabuska (talk) 14:07, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Mabuska, I'm not aware of any special rules for Northern Ireland placenames, but the normal way to handle placenames is in the format Boston, Lincolnshire so if the name is only unique with the next level of geography up you just put square brackets round them. If the townland geography overlaps parishes then the Irish wikiproject may have come up with a separate rule. If you are planning to create multiple Drumcrees I'd suggest making Drumcree the disambiguation page, but as they often get deleted if they have fewer than three bluelinks it would probably be safest to wait till you have three Drumcrees then move the current one and turn the redirect into a dab page. ϢereSpielChequers 15:06, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- So say for example the townland of Lisnamuck, you mean that i should title them a such;
- Lisnamuck, Maghera
- Lisnamuck, Aghadowey
- No townlands overlap parish boundaries as they are sub-divisions of a parish. However parishes are sub-divisions of a barony which do sometimes occassionally cross boundaries. Mabuska (talk) 23:28, 22 July 2010 (UTC)
- OK I've had a little search and there's something set out at Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(settlements)#Ireland. If several Irish counties each have one townland of a particular name then the preferred format is Lisnamuck, County Sligo, Lisnamuck, County Antrim etc. It doesn't currently set out what you do if you have two or more Lisnamucks in say Tyrone - but I think you'd be safe to go down a level of geography Lisnamuck, Maghera, Lisnamuck, Aghadowey. Having part of the name in brackets is only done when names are not unique and you need to distinguish John Smith (actor) from John Smith (politician) this emphasises that its not part of their name. Hope that helps. ϢereSpielChequers 05:00, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm i wonder would stating...
- Lisnamuck, Maghera civil parish
- Lisnamuck, Aghadowey civil parish
- ... be better as just stating Maghera or Aghadowey could confuse people as they are also not just the name of a civil parish but also towns, in the case of Maghera the name of two towns in Northern Ireland. Mabuska (talk) 11:56, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think the underlying principal is to add enough address elements to make it unique, whilst avoiding piping. Normally that enables you to stick to two address elements - Dallas, Scotland as opposed to Dallas, Texas. But if you have one that is much more important than the other you could have Dallas as in Texas with a wp:hatnote pointing to a disambiguation page for other Dallas's. As for Maghere and Aghadowey, as long as they only have one Lisnamuck each you should be OK, as the first line of the article will establish which Maghera or Aghadowey they are in. Uh I'm kind of new to Wikipedia and Talk pages and all of that. You sent me a message saying to leave a message on your talk page for help, and I think I'm doing that. If I'm doing something else, I'm sorry. Also I don't know if I'm signing the page right, so please forgive me if I'm wrong.

- <ref>[http://the.website.you.are.citing website name] retrieved 27th July 2010</ref>
- Then copy the website in and put a name for it where it says website name. Hopefully if you use preview that should work. ϢereSpielChequers 23:54, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Death anomalies
Part of the problem is a lot of the time, I cant find any references for the deaths on the foreign wiki's. Searching the web for death notices before 2006 or so can be almost useless. Most of these people seem to be actually dead but theres no real way to reference them online. George Weigel is the one that baffles me most, as far as I can tell the German article points to a GEORG Weigel who died in 1776 or so, but i have yet to find a way to make the bot not register it as George Weigel. Williamb (talk) 16:50, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks William. I think I've disentangled that one now, there were interwiki links between 6 articles on 6 different projects - and if you leave just one of them those helpful bots will put all the others back. I suspect that a high proportion of the 550 we had when this started had referenced articles on the foreign pedias, but now we are down to 120 or so and it can be a bit of a struggle. I'm hoping that the Signpost article will find us people with Japanese or Russian library access. If that doesn't work I'm going to use a bot to contact the relevant wikiprojects. The good thing is that most of the new anomalies are more easily fixable, on the other hand there are over a hundred languages still to add! ϢereSpielChequers 17:57, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- I thought I'd done that one. The de.Wiki has Georg Weigel the Evangelical theologist b. 1594 d. 1668. Georg Weigel was deleted A7 from the en.Wiki today - perhaps you can have a look at it. There is an American George Weigel, a distinguished Senior Fellow of the Ethics and Public Policy Center, is a Catholic theologian and one of America's leading public intellectuals and is still very much alive both on en.Wiki and in RL. If we need an article on 16th century Georg, I can quickly translate one from the german Wiki.--Kudpung (talk) 17:26, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- The difficulty was that 6 articles were all being interlinked via Intrawiki links. So to detach one you have to edit all 6. Georg Weigel looked to me like a translation of the DE article, I'm really surprised that it was deleted, especially as a speedy. I'll have a word with the admin. Opinion peice
I've gone over it and copyedited it extensively. Most notably, I've moved it out to third person voice (it is an encyclopedia after all ;) ) and handled a few instances of clumsy language. However some points in the work need clarification, namely "most of the backlog is down to differences in the way different projects treat missing people" and "people who if alive would be over 100 years old." I'm no pro and Tony will still need to do a number on it before publication, but I'm kind of in the dark over that. If I unwittingly changed the meaning, do tell :) Cheers, ResMar 23:09, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks, I gave you a press release - no need to apologise for ruthless editing here:) But it may be a while before I get to look at that - almost time for bed here. ϢereSpielChequers 23:28, 11 September 2010 (UTC)
- OK I've made some tweaks. Also Hermínio de Brito is a good example of anomalies due to different policies. We and the French agree that he was born in 1914 and retired from football in 1945. But according to EN wiki policies he is categorised under living peple and FR wiki classifies him as a probable twentieth century death. If we could find a reference either to an obituary or to show he was still living then we could resolve the anomaly, otherwise it will remain in the report for a couple of decades until EN wiki decides that everyone born in 1914 is dead. ϢereSpielChequers 00:17, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
Ah, so you are saying that for people from long ago who dissapeared and no death date is known, the line is difficult to draw? Personally, I would just put them under "Probable deaths" and the like. ResMar 01:01, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- Btw, they're all standing at 0 right now :) ResMar 01:03, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
- The Slovene is 0 but not the Swedish or English - incredible result by the Slovenes as they've cleared that in under a week. The difficult thing about probable deaths is that each project has a consensus based policy as to when you assume someone is probably dead, and the consensus is different on different projects. Yes we could resolve anomalies on this report by applying the French consensus here or the English consensus on FR wiki, but we'd probably get reverted and we might well just wind up creating anomalies on other projects. Alternatively we just accept that the report has a number of matches listed against people in the probable death categories and concentrate on the matches where there is an actual year of death - fortunately this is marked on the report. Prodding articles and declining speedy deletions are also a lot quicker (though I suspect many editors get twinkle long before they submit an RFA). - Hi Herostratus, Olaf Davies has written something for me using user:Botlaf. It's still at an early stage and the code gets a bit thrown by by wikilinks. But as well as easily confused words I've got some high risk words patrolled with it. If you want to join in you'd be very welcome as I'm thinking of words worth checking faster than I can get the backlogs resolved on them. I haven't touched the C word report in user:Botlaf/Abuse since the last run - that's time consuming as I only put that sort of thing in the safe page list if I've checked a reference. - No bother at all, I've chimed in at the article talkpage, I couldn't find the film on the BAFTA site, but there was a pdf attachment and I can't do pdf this evening. If you could perhaps have a look yourself I'd suggest tagging it as a hoax if the award story doesn't pan out. As for the newbie, I wouldn't say the advice is totally incorrect "The article is accurate and all links correct." I'd be inclined to translate as "the article is accurately written from a bunch of self published sources which I as a Newbie didn't realise weren't appropriate for the sourcing of Wikipedia articles." So yes quite possibly a sock or meatpuppet but also possibly done in good faith but a newbie mistake. ϢereSpielChequers 21:04, 25 September 2010 (UTC)

Hi WSC. I sent you an email some months ago and never recorded a reply. You may have missed it or perhaps I missed your reply- I had a crash on my server hardware in May. You are usually very quick to answer messages :) Cheers, --Kudpung (talk) 03:07, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Kudpung, I migrated from that account to a dedicated wikipedia one because the account I used to use gets deluged with spam (I've had that account for about 12 years). I've just had a bit of a trawl in case I missed any wikipedia messages on that account, but its possible my spam filter eat your email. Any chance you could resend? Hey mate, could you rename the Category:Valentine-Eleebana rugby league players to Valentine-Eleebana Red Devils players? Thanks. Josh the newcastle fan (talk) 02:05, 1 October 2010 (UTC)
- OK Hopefully that will do what you need. Categories can't be moved or redirected in the normal way, so that was a bit new to me. I've done a category redirect from Category:Valentine-Eleebana rugby league players to category:Valentine-Eleebana Red Devils players, copied the contents and moved the talkpage. Just out of interest why remove the category Category:Anglo-Saxon monarchs as that is what he was, an anglo saxon monarch, in fact according to some the last one of this area! Compared to the other fraught changes this article has undergone I am not worried in any sense just wondering why. Thanks Edmund Patrick – confer 18:46, 8 October 2010 (UTC)
- Well he is still in the category Category:East Anglian monarchs, which is a subcategory of Category:Anglo-Saxon monarchs but if you look at the rest of the category I removed they were all Anglo Saxon Kings of England. ϢereSpielChequers 21:23, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Hi WSC. I see you chimed in at this ongoing policy discussion. You may have missed the sudden spate of resulting discussions at Talk:Peterborough, Talk:Dover, Talk:Plymouth, Talk:Sydenham, Talk:Cornwall & Talk:Cambridge. I think it would be helpful if experienced editors, particularly those knowledgeable on policies, were to review the situation and offer some suggestions as to where to go next.--Kudpung (talk) 00:52, 25 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hmm... I can see why you didn't need to answer this - I just stumbled on Jenis's page. Well, here's something with a touch of irony for you to consider: Talk:Malvern, Worcestershire#Suggested page move, and where you are welcome to voice your opinion. --Kudpung (talk) 15:08, 26 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry yes I occasionally get distracted into such discussions - I lost a battle over Harris a year or so back and I was already in this one. But I'll stay out of Malvern unless you've been notifying our colonial cousins about that debate as I wouldn't want to appear to be canvassed. Also if I may make a suggestion, its probably best to balance notes like the above with notes to people who whilst equally interested are liable to take the opposite view:) ϢereSpielChequers 15:20, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Identity parade
Hi. I suppose there is nothing I can do about this brand new account at User talk:Kudpung99 who has practically but not quite usurped my user name?--Kudpung (talk) 13:30, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- I've not been active in that area, but Wikipedia:Username_policy#Similar_usernames suggests a template, and you could ask for advice on that talkpage. If you are editing in the same area, I don't think it unreasonable to suggest that you and Kudpung99 put something on your userpages to say you are not each other, but usernames can be very similar, Lar and Lir for example. ϢereSpielChequers 14:57, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks. We do not appear to have anything in common with our editing trends, and I had already put a kind of disambig hatnote on my user page. Strange coinicidence tho', it's not a word or a name one would make up on the spur of the moment.--Kudpung (talk) 00:33, 28 October 2010 (UTC)
- With all our millions of usernames and tens of thousands of active editors there are bound to be a few like this. One obvious solution is long usernames but as I can testify that has its own drawbacks. As for similar names, I seem to remember an unsettling incident a while back, one thing I'd recommend to people is if you ever get a rename keep the old name as an alternate account with just enough edits not to be usurped. Born2cycle
I think it's time that user:Born2cycle was given a firm nudge in the direction of some of our policies. I've had quite enough of him trying to change policy to suit his own WP:POINTY, and now he's taken to closing debates he's deeply involved in. Because he's also tried to draw me into his altercations, I don't feel I'm the right person to be insisting that he try to interpret Wikipedia policy more accurately.--Kudpung (talk) 13:40, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
- Unless I've missed something I don't see that as closing, but as I've argued with this editor a couple of times now I'm far too involved to even hint at an any admin actions against them. As it happens I'm inclined to give this editor more than the usual amount of slack, from the username I think we are dealing with a cyclist who is spreading beyond their wikiproject and becoming a more generalised Wikipedian. At the moment they are seeing things as sharply Black and White and missing the shades of grey that happen in cases such as that AFD, when policies conflict. Hopefully in a little time they will come to appreciate more of the nuances of this site and grok our diversity and complexity, but as for the moment, I'm probably their least favourite admin and therefore not well placed to guide them. Blacklisted URLs
Hi WSC. What's the standard workaround at db-copyvio when the URL triggers the blacklist and won't allow the CSD template to stick? I just had one so I left off the http:// from the URL - is that OK? --Kudpung (talk) 06:09, 30 October 2010 (UTC)
- Sorry Kudpung I don't know the answer to that one. But I don't see why a URL would trigger a copyvio blacklist, are you sure it isn't a blacklist against citing that source? ϢereSpielChequers 11:28, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- I don't know where the blacklists lurk (yet), but that's almost certainly the problem. If the software interface won't accept them, that's it. So it's not possible to enter them on the db-copyvio tpl in the space for the URL. This needs to be addressed eventually, but as it's the first time it's happened to me when slapping a copyvio out of the hundreds (well, perhaps dozens) I've done already, it's probably low priority. --Kudpung (talk) 13:17, 31 October 2010 (UTC)
- OK sorry the penny now drops. Yes this looks like a catch 22 - if we blacklist a source to prevent it being linked to or cited that means we can't cope when someone copypastes from it. I'm guessing that this might possibly have happened before, and if so the folks at Wikipedia talk:Copyright problems#Copyvio from_a blacklisted_source will have something they prepared earlier. ϢereSpielChequers 13:41, 31 October 2010 (UTC)

It's not archived, of course, but actively ongoing there, with at least one new comment added since its subpaging. Editcount

- Well editcount does need to be taken with a pinch of salt, and I expect it is somewhat related to the tools you use, but I think it a phenomenal achievement. I haven't used AWB myself, and I'm not sure that my rather flaky broadband would support editing at your speeds if I did. But I was wondering as an AWB user, do you think AWB would be any use to sort out "staring"? I started fixing it with reports from user:Botlaf but that's going quiescent as I can't find a Python programmer to run that code. Based on the hundreds I've fixed, I would anticipate that at least a quarter of the 2,440 articles that contain staring actually have it as a typo for "starring" or occasionally "starting". Am I right in thinking that means way to many false positives to use AWB? ϢereSpielChequers 12:10, 3 November 2010 (UTC)

Bureaucrat-ship?
My personal interactions with you and my analysis of your presence on our project makes me believe you might be an appropriate choice for becoming a bureaucrat. Ergo, leaving this note... Sincere regards. Wifione ....... Leave a message 11:41, 8 November 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks Wifione, that is very flattering. But I doubt that >85% of the community would hold the same view as you. I've seen two very well qualified candidates be rejected at RFB in the last year, and I can think of many reasons why some people would oppose me.
- There are people who opposed my RFA because of my lack of audited content, and I think that the vandalfighting and gnomish work such as typo fixing that dominates my contributions is even less valued now than it was in the past.
- I've expressed views in several contentious subjects over the years and it would only take one or two of those who held the opposite opinion to me over each of those to torpedo an RFB.
- I've argued on more than one occasion that a possible reform to RFA would either be to reduce the status of admins by upbundling the most important part of their role to the crats; Or to empower the crats to appoint probationary admins. I suspect that some people would consider it inappropriate for me to argue for an increase in crats power immediately before running as a crat myself.
- My !voting pattern at RFA doesn't always follow consensus, there are things that I'm more tolerant of than some, as evidenced by my supports for many candidates who've failed to achieve consensus, and there have been opposes I've made to successful candidates because I'm more cautious than most !voters about appointing admins who might be over enthusiastic with the deletion button. I believe that I understand the difference between my views on an RFA and the consensus of the discussion, but some RFA regulars might take some convincing.
- I've been saying for years that RFA is broken, and collating evidence of that. I suspect this would count for me if I ran for crat after it was fixed or when the number of active admins finally drops to a point where everyone accepts we have a problem. But if I ran now then some people would be concerned that as a crat I might be tempted to address the problem I perceive there to be at RFA by being overly lenient with marginal candidates.
- RFBs can easily get mired into arguments about whether we need another crat and if so whether this candidate is the best candidate available as opposed to the best candidate running. Since even I would concede that there are better potential candidates out there I can pretty much guarantee opposes on those grounds.
- ϢereSpielChequers 15:27, 8 November 2010 (UTC)

- I'd be surprised to see a successful RfB in the foreseeable future. I think your last point is especially valid. I think if anybody stood at RfB right now, the "we don't need any more 'crats" camp is easily large enough to produce 15% opposition even before anybody opposed because "that WSC guy looks shifty, we don't want him as a 'crat". ;) I expect that either the workload of 'crats will greatly increase or the number of active 'crats will plummet before we get another successful RfB unless the candidate is a bot expert. Now, if we can get people to realise that having only a few hundred active admins really is a problem, my faith in the !voting community might be restored. Quick technical question
Do you know how I can get all the templates on a page to be in an expanded state? Using the "state=expanded" within the template doesn't seem to work when using more than one template - see example. Is there a code to have all templates on a page automatically be expanded? Thanks. Redthoreau -- (talk) 05:20, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Hi WSC. I expect you're aware of this huge CCI. There are quite a few bio & BLP stubs among all this. I've read the general instructions for the clean up, but I'm still not so sure what to do about entire articles and stubs. I'd obviously rescue them if I could by finding new unplagiarised sources, but if I can't, what deletion process should be used ? --Kudpung (talk) 01:59, 20 November 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Kudpung, if the article was plagiarised from a reliable source then the simplest thing is to write a stub referenced to that source. If the source that was plagiarised from is not a reliable source and can't be used as a reference to a new article, then once you've tried and failed to reference them I would recommend prod, providing they haven't been prodded before. This might tempt a rescuer who has access to reference sources that you don't have access to, and it gives everyone seven days. Of course some of these will fit other criteria, but from what I've heard of the current CCI backlog you are unlikely to come across ones that qualify as hoaxes or A7. You might find the occasional one that people challenge and or has previously survived a prod and if so AFD is a sensible route for challenged deletions where a good faith attempt to source the article has been attempted. - Thanks, apart from the one I just gave you from the 6th Nov there are several I explained in Wikipedia:Requests for_comment/Colonel_Warden#Outside view_by_WereSpielChequers, and one more I've just spotted. you described this as removed refimprove tag. But actually the article had two refimprove tags and he removed one duplicate and left the other... I don't think anyone would argue that an article should have two refimprove tags at the same time. ϢereSpielChequers 00:31, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- Also as I pointed out in one of my posts on the talkpage I would be happy to see "removed prod without explanation" simply replaced with "Whilst removing a prod" as that would clarify that the declining of prods is not an issue as far as your evidence is concerned - though I believe Jack Merridew intends to make the number of prods declined an issue. ϢereSpielChequers 00:46, 11 December 2010 (UTC)
- I took a look at your objections, and made a few minor changes to the Cause of Concern section. I'll try to briefly explain below what I did and why I didn't change everything you mentioned:
- From your Outside View
- Removed {{deadend}} from article with 1 link. - I didn't change my description here. The article clearly suffered from a lack of outgoing links, and CW didn't improve that situation. He also removed a wikify and catimprove tag in the same edit, and didn't fix those problems either. If it were just the deadend tag I'd probably concede, but when you combine it with the others it becomes difficult for me to AGF.
- Removed {{inuniverse}} tag from Transformers article. - I didn't change my description for this either, same reasoning as above. Whether the article is excessively in-universe is debatable, but the debate is not black and white. CW also removed plot and cleanup tags from this article in the same edit. He made no relevant improvements (and by "relevant", I mean relevant to the tags that he removed).
- Removed {{cleanup}} tag from Amish furniture. - Again, I didn't change my description for the same reason. CW also removed the {{unreferenced}} tag in the same edit, and the article has zero references. Even if the cleanup tag is debatable, his behavior clearly shows that he is just removing all cleanup tags on these articles. I can't look at these diffs and truly believe that he is actually considering each tag separately before he deletes them all.
- From your comments on the RfC talk page
- Nov 6th diff, where CW made subsequent edits to improve the article. - You're correct that CW made a subsequent edit which improved the article. However, the improvement that was made was not related to the cleanup tags that he deleted, so the point is moot. However, I have amended the description in the RfC nonetheless.
- From your user talk page (above)
- Removed duplicate refimprove tag. - I'm not buying this one, and made no changes to the description. The second refimprove tag was pretty clearly intended to be a "section" tag, even though whoever put it there omitted the "section" argument in the template. I think the other dozen or so diffs in the RfC show that CW has gotten in the habit of removing all of the cleanup tags from the top of the article. I find it extremely difficult to believe that he deleted this one because he thought it was a duplicate. Even if that is the case, the expert cleanup tag wasn't duplicated, why was that removed as well? Why were the seven {{citation needed}} tags removed?
- Removed prod without explanation wording. - I struck the "without explanation" from each instance where it occurred.
Again, I believe that the overall point I'm trying to make is that CW's editing behavior shows a clear pattern of removing all of the cleanup tags on an article, regardless of whether or not they are appropriate. It's unhelpful and irrelevant to cherry-pick one of the three cleanup tags CW removed in one edit and show how if you stretch AGF to the breaking point, you can make an argument where that particular tag's presence on the article is borderline debatable. In any case, these are all the changes I'm willing to make to the Cause of Concern. SnottyWong speak 17:57, 13 December 2010 (UTC)
- I've replied largely on the RFC as that is still running. However to be specific, if you want to file an RFC on someone you need to focus on problematic edits, including legit or even borderline ones in your evidence weakens your case. As for why someone left an article with two refimprove tags, the reason isn't important, removing one of the two is a legit edit - I'd have done that without thinking. Criticising someone for not working out what someone else meant to do is unreasonable - if an article contains duplicate tags that is a clear error and removing one of them is a good edit. Were you planning to go to my "guided tour" after lunch on Friday? If so (and only if so) how do you feel about accompanying me on the keyboard, as it were? I won't have any slides & will just use my notes plus displayed live pages, most of which I'm compiling here. I don't normally use a laptop & don't like them (I'll borrow one from a son) & am generally very slow on unfamiliar machines, small keyboards etc. & I'm thinking it would be better having someone else to do that while I talk & ask for links. It might be useful for you to get used to the setup in the room before your own talk. If not, no problem, as I'm sure I can find someone else, or do it myself if need be, but I think it would be a great help. I'd offer to return the favour, but trust me you don't want that! UK Community Notice - IRC meeting
Dear Wikipedian,
This is the first of what will hopefully be a regular notice to help bring together the UK community so that you can be involved in some amazing things. To kick things off, there will be a UK community IRC meeting at 1800 UTC, December 7, 2010 to discuss the future growth and developement of Wikimedia UK. Without huge community support and involvement, the chapter cannot be successful and to get the most out of it, get involved.
For information on the community IRC meeting please go here
More to come about:
- Wikipedia 10th Anniversary Events
- 1st Annual UK Wiki-conference
- Trustee interest meeting - an event for those community members with even just a fleeting interest in becoming trustees of Wikimedia UK.
Many Thanks

Project tagging for American football player
WereSpielChequers, hello. I've noticed you've been doing some project tagging for American football biography articles. Wikipedia:WikiProject American football is intended primarily to cover core concepts of the sport like touchdown. If a person played or coached college football they should be tagged with {{WikiProject College football}}. If they played or coached in the NFL, they should be tagged with {{WikiProject National Football League}}. Only if a person did not play or coach in either college football or the NFL or are most notable for their participation in some other league or level should they be tagged with {{WikiProject American football}}. Thanks. Jweiss11 (talk) 05:01, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Jweiss, Yes I'm one of the people who is trying to tag all our unreferenced Biographies of Living People to projects that might be interested in them. I'm not entirely sure what the difference is between those three. I thought that there were only three team sports in North America, Baseball, Basketball and American Football and my knowledge of sport is barely adequate to tell those three apart. But I will add those two to the project list I use and watch out for that. However if I do tag something for American Football that you consider belongs in NFL or College please do me the favour of correcting my tag. Cheers ϢereSpielChequers 09:20, 9 December 2010 (UTC)
- WereSpielChequers, I take it you're from the UK? In North America, we certainly have more than just those three team sports, but in the US, yes, those are biggest three spectator sports. In Canada, the most popular sport is probably ice hockey, which pretty much runs #4 in the US. In college football and in the National Football League (NFL), the same sport, American football, is being played with some small discrepancies in the rules. In Canada, they generally play Canadian football, which is similar to American football, but considered an different form of sport. The main difference between the NFL and college football is that the NFL is played by professional, paid athletes, while college football is played by amateur student-athletes. Virtually everyone who plays in the NFL plays college football first. Both college football and the NFL are very popular and followed closely all over the US. The NFL is far and away the most prestigious, talent-ladden, and historically significant professional (American) football league the US, but there are some others that exist today and some notable defunct leagues. When tagging biography articles, the {{WikiProject American football}} is almost never going to be appropriate, especially for living people. It's appropriate for early football players from the late 1800s and early 1900s that played professionally before the NFL was formed in 1920 and never played college football, the level at which the sport was pretty much invented around 1869; see 1869 college football season. Hope this helps. If you are unsure about how to tag a given bio article, give me a shout. Jweiss11 (talk) 17:58, 10 December 2010 (UTC)
- WSC, think talent-divided divisions of soccer. The NFL is composed of professional, paid players; college football is mostly composed of scholarship athletes who are attending the institution; and it goes down from there, to high school etc. Each has a significant amount of overlap fan-wise, but a surprisingly large number of people only like the NFL and not college or vice versa. - Hi Satusuro, and seasons greetings to you too. I suspect the problem we have here is a communication one across languages. EN Wiki's requirement for referencing is much more stringent than many other language versions, and I don't think the message has yet got through to some editors whose English may not be that strong. Where their home language is obvious from their area of interest I would suggest trying to find a currently active editor who understand the relevant language and ask them to talk to them on their home wiki. WikiProjects and Userboxes are two good ways to find people. ϢereSpielChequers 11:16, 17 December 2010 (UTC)
- I would only wish - nah they ignore the messages either in english or indonesian (which I send to them on their talk pages) and they simply go merrily along as if nothing was bothering them - problem is how many... oh dear dare i say it - how many delete messages on their talk pages or how many unreferenced new bio stubs are considered reasonable before asking for some action from a third party to act in an administrative way (as i seem in the the main challenger to their additions)?
