hypocrasy

It's not just the fact that you are being neurotic; it's also that you're being incredibly hypocritical. Who are you to say that some small facts are useful whereas others are not? Surely it's up to the reader to decide and not you.--Benchmark90 (talk) 19:20, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

I think you are embracing the Inclusionism cause, and accusing me of being an Exclusionist, and there may be some truth in what you say. However there is an argument that editing out less important information keeps articles crisp and readable. Personally I consider articles as large as Joseph Pomeroy Widney, Jack Kemp or 'Allo 'Allo! (series 5) overly verbose. May I suggest that you have a look at those articles and see if you are comfortable with that level of detail. ϢereSpielChequers 22:37, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Jonathan, thanks for catching the typo from my submission in "Baseball in 1994". Ever since I hurt my finger I have had a hard time typing "t-h-e" properly, and try as I might, I miss a few. I hope all is well in the London area .... it is a great city!TeganX7 03:59, 3 September 2007 (UTC)

My Wife is 18 (Thier - Their)

Thankyou for fixing up the article My Wife Is 18, your efforts are appreciated!! How did you come across the article in the first place? =D Dengero 14:14, 13 October 2007 (UTC)

Hi Dengero, I did a search for thier, which can be a place or a surname but mostly on Wikipedia was a typo for their. It has given me some interesting reading ranging from sport, cinema and the history of Assamese tribes to schools and rock music.ϢereSpielChequers 17:08, 14 October 2007 (UTC)

Matt Parkman

diffuse -> defuse. Good catch! I wonder why that sillyness was in there so long? RussNelson 18:38, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Thanks, I did a search for "diffuse the situation" and got 24 hits across Wikipedia, mostly from articles that were otherwise good quality. I suspect errors like this where the wrong word is used are harder to spot than ones that a spellchecker can find. ϢereSpielChequers 19:54, 12 November 2007 (UTC)

Easter Island

You added some material on geology to Easter Island in this edit, but the ref on seamounts was never completed. Someone else has recently reorganised the refs for that article, and this is now tagged as "citation needed". If you still recall the source, could you add it please.-gadfium 19:44, 18 March 2008 (UTC)

No problem, that's what I like about Wikipedia, I get to spend the occasional hour searching for and eradicating a particular typo, and in the process get some very eclectic reading.ϢereSpielChequers 21:34, 6 April 2008 (UTC)

Dutch paintings

  • Also from me, from Holland. At first I did not understand how you got to the website, but reading your talk page I do. It is impossible to check every word on spelling. Then I have to write my text each time in a wordprocessor. Or is there another solution? Taksen (talk) 17:11, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Dear Taksen, I use a Linux PC with wordprocessing software that is set to spell check in English. So when I'm editing in Wikipedia I have the advantage that typos are underlined in red. I'm afraid I am just a user of the technology and don't know how to change settings, but I'm sure it would be possible to get your PC set up so you could use an English spell checker or a Dutch one depending on the language you were working in. Alternatively just go on putting in that interesting Art stuff you submit and leave the tidying up to people like me.ϢereSpielChequers 18:26, 29 May 2008 (UTC)

Do I follow people around?

Do you help everyone by cleaning up sloppy edits, or am I special? =) You always seem to cover my sweeping but poorly-spelt changes, thanks again. Larklight (talk) 09:44, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Bit of both really, if someone thanks me for fixing their typos, and I found their stuff interesting I often go and look at other contributions they've made. Also some people have a blindspot for particular words and if their blindspot creates one of the typos that I search for then our paths will repeatedly cross. In your case looking at the last time I edited something after you, I think you write "becuase" rather than because, plus we both have an interest in British Politics so we may have similar reading material.ϢereSpielChequers 21:53, 9 June 2008 (UTC)

Re Jim Stanton

Hi, I did PROD it originally, but then changes were made to the article to make me not at all sure if it should be deleted. I then added the tags to it then left it for the community to sort out. As I originally wanted to delete it I don't honestly have an opinion at this time. -- roleplayer 23:48, 13 June 2008 (UTC)

Manual of Style edit

Hi Jonathan. It's a good idea in some respects, but I think your edit is not necessary. The topic there is "consistency within articles", and disambiguation pages are not articles. (See Wikipedia:What is an article?.) Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 15:33, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Oh yes, I take your point. However I got there from a link from Center where I've now twice had rolled back a bunch of edits where someone is promoting American English spelling even where that causes red links. Is there an equivalent guideline for disambiguation pages? ϢereSpielChequers 16:19, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

I think anyone taking a glance at the edits can see that the anon IP there is editing disruptively. You've warned them, and if they continue they could be blocked. I don't think you need a guideline to justify reverting their edits (such as changing Centre (geometry) to the redirect Center (geometry)). Paul Erik (talk)(contribs) 16:39, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Metropolis

Hi. I just edited the Metropolis (film) page to remove a reference that does not support the article's statement. More specifically, the article at reference 12 says nothing about a forthcoming Blu-Ray release, nor does it come from "The Digital Bits." You reverted my removal of the reference, apparently because you assumed it was an experiment.75.189.134.151 (talk) 11:39, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

Hi, You deleted the reference from a paragraph and left your edit summary blank, so yes I reverted you without checking in much detail. I've now checked out the reference that you deleted and edited the article inline with the reference. ϢereSpielChequers 12:21, 6 July 2008 (UTC)

What is it with you and Rich Miniter?

He's a gobshite, a partisan blowhard, and a lazy arse who does all his research from home on his computer. He's also a drunk. My edits were just reflecting that fact.

Plus, his article reads like an advertisement, and should either be completely overhauled or just deleted. Did he write it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.65.38.77 (talk) 11:00, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

I reverted [edit] of Richard Miniter because it looked like vandalism. I've looked again in case I misjudged your edits, and I still think your edits to that page look like vandalism, for example your sentence "This town is generally populated by jerks such as Richie-boy." If you think the article is biased and you have information that would balance it then I suggest you read Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons before making any further edits to biographical articles on Wikipedia. Having now Googled him I think it would be hard to argue that he was not noteable enough for an article, I don't think I could judge whether its biased or not, but it does make it clear that he's defending Dubya's Oil Crusade, which in my view is far more damning than any of the epithets you used about him. No Problem, MV Princess Victoria is an interesting article, a sad and heroic story. ϢereSpielChequers 06:53, 5 August 2008 (UTC)

Thank you for your assistance re: this user. Unfortunately, the user has once again left a personal, negative message at my talk page instead of directing his or her concerns to the article's discussion page. You'll note more warnings were blanked by the user so he or she is fully aware of what they are doing. I am also not the only editor to have changed or reverted this editors WP:NOR on that particular article (Death). As I do not to wish to directly engage with the user, any help would be greatly appreciated. Best, A Sniper (talk) 23:32, 10 August 2008 (UTC)

You may also note that "A Sniper" has "blanked" all of the reasons I have given him for my edits. He is "fully aware" that "what [he is] doing" is crying wolf. I am no vandal, and no edit warrior, and no personal attacker, despite what this "A Sniper" may tell you. In football, this person would be known as a flopper.

Your policy

So it's OK if others repeatedly undo my edits, but not if I undo theirs? How is that fair?

Attacks

I would just add that "A Sniper"'s continual reversion of my edits without ever addressing the reasons I gave him for making those edits make it quite difficult to "stay cool." That said, the most I have done is describe his behavior as imperious or Kafkaesque or the like. If that constitutes a "personal attack," then so be it. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.117.5.88 (talk) 02:50, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

One more thing

From your own rules: "Deliberate engagement in edit warring instead of discussion is considered a breach of Wikiquette and may cause a user to be blocked from editing."

I have repeatedly (and mostly politely) tried to engage "A Sniper" in discussion of his edits. He has spurned every such attempt. Instead, he has just unilaterally and continually reverted my edits. If anyone should be blocked from editing for "edit warring," it is he, not I. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.117.5.88 (talk) 02:54, 11 August 2008 (UTC)

I agree that your edits are not vandalism, but mostly politely isn't quite the same as always politely, can I suggest you read this? Also if you edit from an IP address rather than registering as a user you are more likely to be assumed to be a vandal. especially if you forget to sign talk page comments by ending your remarks with ~~~~

That may not seem fair but it is a practical response to a significant minority of unregistered editors. You were actually both vulnerable to the three revert rule but I'm glad to see you are both editing away from Death (band) can I suggest you stay away from that article for a few days? Hi, I included the above link on the web page on the basis that the link to La Voz de Albox (an organisation with similar aims and objectives) had already been permitted.

The only difference is that the AUAN covers a number of towns in the Almanzora Valley.

However, I respect your rules. Please remove our link if you see fit.

Hi AUAN Webmaster, they are our rules not my rules - you and I are both Wikipedia editors. Good job blanking Kelly Cipriani and warning the author/vandal. webbed feet

I'm sorry, but I did read that. I can't find the reference though.

I'd have thought that however small or insignificant the information, Wikipedia was about bringing as much knowledge as possible to people. A reference to webbed feet may well be a small tidbit, but there are also references to colourblindness and the like which I suggest you also look up if you are going to be so neurotic. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Benchmark90 (talkcontribs) 18:31, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

May I suggest you read Wikipedia:What Wikipedia is not, and when you edit controversial articles like David Irving you might want to discuss things on the talk page first. ϢereSpielChequers 18:48, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Speedy deletion of "Sigafoo"

A page you created, Sigafoo, has been tagged for deletion, as it meets one or more of the criteria for speedy deletion; specifically, it is about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how they are important or significant, and thus why they should be included in an encyclopedia. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, and the guidelines for biographies in particular.

You are welcome to contribute content which complies with our content policies and any applicable inclusion guidelines. However, please do not simply re-create the page with the same content. You may also wish to read our introduction to editing and guide to writing your first article.

Thank you. RJaguar3 | u | t 17:32, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Actually I didn't create Sigafoo, I moved it to Derek Sigafoo, then nominated that for deletion after reading the article. But don't worry I've already put a note on the actual creators page. ϢereSpielChequers 17:46, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Driverside

While I think that Driverside is written like an advertisement, I think the subject is notable and the article has salvageable content. I'm thinking AfD instead. What do you think? RJaguar3 | u | t 18:05, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

I've done a quick check of their sites and links and I'm not convinced that a site that admits to being in Beta mode or that claims this much coverage about themselves is notable enough yet for a Wikipedia article. I've also Googled them and found at least one press release being quoted. But I've not found anything that I would consider merits an article, however if you have got something that implies they are notable or you want to take it to AFD then go ahead. They seem to be deleting the speedy tags themselves rather than putting {{Hangon}}, but if they do put a {{Hangon}} then it gets a stay of execution anyway. ϢereSpielChequers 18:24, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
They've now put a {{Hangon}} so I guess we give them a few days to make it encyclopedic and establish notability - if not presumably AFD? ϢereSpielChequers 18:32, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Edit warnings

Thanks for your comments and support on my RfA. Although life has been hectic recently (not just the RfA), I don't always warn if it is an IP address and that's their only edit. Maybe I should, but a lot of those, I think, won't return or will return with a different IP address. Maybe there's some policy guidance I need to read, there's a lot of it about! On the other hand, when someone I warn has several recent edits, I check them, fix them if they are vandalism and haven't been fixed, and warn them for any vandalism that hasn't been reported - sometimes that means all their edits. Nice talk page, I might nick some ideas from it if you don't mind. Doug Weller (talk) 11:09, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Doug, Yes I suppose not warning the first time might make sense, what annoys me is when I see someone who has been reverted several times before getting any sort of warning. I'd love to see some research on the success rate of each level of warning at deterring vandals. Oh and help yourself to anything you want to nick from my user pages, pretty much everything here has been nicked from other users! ϢereSpielChequers 11:39, 13 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, thanks for the welcoming. I'm trying to contribute with Wolverine and The X-Men, but people always undo what I correct. LOL I'm not sure how this works, because I'm adding the right information, as I'm watching the series daily here in Brazil. lol If I'm doing something wrong, please tell me. I'm not even sure if is the right way to send you a message. :( But thanks a lot, WereSpielChequers! Littlemissgenius (talk) 07:33, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi! Yes this is certainly one right way to send me a message, and my advice was going to be to discuss the changes that seem to be controversial on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men, but it seems you are already doing that. So firstly a question, is the version you watch in Brazil in Portuguese or in English? Secondly a couple of suggestions, if you are going to source information from a television program have look at Wikipedia:Citation_templates. Specifically can you get the following information?

{{cite episode | title = | episodelink = | series = | serieslink = | airdate = | season = | number = }}

Lastly if the person who is deleting your additions isn't taking part in the discussion on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men then you could try putting a message on their talk page along the lines of "Hi, I've noticed you edit Wolverine and the X-Men, what do you think of my suggestions on Talk:Wolverine and the X-Men?"

Hope that helps ϢereSpielChequers 09:50, 27 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes it's "mine" as far as Wikipedia is concerned, but I only brought it here from another part of my life where it is a boilerplate question for vetting candidates. I'm delighted to have someone else take this up, (especially this week where I feel my involvement in other people's RFA's should be restricted to Support as per or Oppose as per once the answer has become obvious to me). I was intending to to make this my standard question in those RFA's where the candidate potentially met my criteria, and hadn't preempted the question in their nomination. But if no-one else was paying attention to it or the answers then I'd have dropped it after a month or so as a personal hobbyhorse that wasn't contributing to the process. to see who you were since you commented at the RCC FAC. I was wondering what your name could possibly mean - I thought it might be something in another language but was pleased to discover its real meaning. Neat name (a bit long though)! NancyHeise talk 22:51, 5 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Nancy, my current name has many "real" meanings, I've listed a few of them on my user page. On reflection yes it is way too long; When you combine two words which have disambiguation pages with a third that has multiple dictionary meanings the possible interpretations are many. The meanings I intended are based partly on the sort of things I get up to on Wikipedia, with a hint of my hero Beorn, an allusion to this my new name not being my real life identity, a hint of one of my many failings (one of the meanings of Spiel being "A lengthy and extravagant speech or argument usually intended to persuade") and an allusion to some of my hobbies (chequers are a major omission from my orchard). As for my commenting on FACs, I'm conscious that it might seem a little rude when I comment but do not !vote. Recently I've started to read most FAC candidates, almost always find something that needs tweaking, and occasionally find an ambiguity that I raise as a comment, however despite rereading WP:FACR I don't yet feel qualified to judge on either criteria 1a or 1b. Thanks for your prompt reply. I'm having big problems editing certain articles in that attempted edits take so long that I'm timed out (Error Message 500 appears). This is frustrating as it's happening with articles to which I've made major contributions and/or created, in particular the following: Paisley, James Black (bishop) and Philip Tartaglia. Any help would be much appreciated. (Ulysses54 (talk) 12:31, 27 October 2008 (UTC))

Is this just a problem you have with Wikipedia articles or generally with other Internet things? I find I have to reboot my PC occasionally simply to clear out the memory of various Wikipedia pages that I've been editing - so rebooting your PC might fix this. Paisley is a fairly large article at 31k so if you are on a slow line you will find it takes time to open and save Philip Tartaglia should be quicker. ϢereSpielChequers 12:42, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

Seems to be just on Wikipedia that there's a problem - and only with certain articles or sections of articles eg Paisley. I tried rebooting but to no avail. I'm still unable to edit on those articles I mentioned above. (Ulysses54 (talk) 15:10, 27 October 2008 (UTC))

I've just made a small edit to James Black (bishop) with no problem. So I'm not sure what is going on, what was the change you were trying to make, did it involve large photos? ϢereSpielChequers 15:18, 27 October 2008 (UTC)
Have you tried clearing your browser cache? Editing with a different browser? Resetting your router? If not, I'd suggest trying it :P. Ale_Jrbtalk 17:06, 27 October 2008 (UTC)

You should get in touch with User:AndrewRT about WLA; he was put up as a local contact person for this project at the recent IRC meeting of Wikimedia UK. Thanks for your help!--Pharos (talk) 01:15, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there. Thanks for your message on my talk page. I've expressed an interest in getting involved and as a Board member of wikimedia v2 I think Pharos wanted me to play some kind of coordinating role but I'm not sure. At this stage I can't tell you any more, but I'll try to take this further this weekend and will get back to you! AndrewRT(Talk) 22:24, 27 November 2008 (UTC)

Yes, Andrew, it would be very helpful if you could fill this role as the contact person. This is not to diminish the role of others at all, but it is extremely helpful from this end to have a clear line of communication between our groups, when we may have half a dozen museum-wikimedian copperatives as part of this project. Thanks.--Pharos (talk) 03:46, 29 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi there, just to let you know, we've worked out some more details about this and I've put up a summary page at WP:WLA@V&A. V&A are hosting a launch event on 1st February and we're hoping to get as many people there as possible. Please:

  • Sign up at the participant list
  • Spread the word to anyone you know who may be interested
  • Come along to an IRC discussion next Tuesday 6th Jan at irc:wikimedia-uk
  • Let me know if you can think of anything else that needs doing on the talk page.

Cheers! AndrewRT(Talk) 23:52, 30 December 2008 (UTC)

I see you have added the image of Borchgrevink's hut to the article. You must be wondering why I didn't use such an obvious Commons image in the first place. The answer lies in the peer review, during which I removed this (it was my lead image) on the advice of User:Elcobbola, who had doubts about it (see peer review). I am a little nervous about its reappearance during FAC - would you please look at the PR & see what you think? Brianboulton (talk) 22:37, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I've now had a look at the Peer review and the concern was about the legitimacy of the photo as a couple of other photos by that poster had had warnings and been taken down. I'm not an expert in copyright, however looking at the contribs by that user there are a bunch of other photos they've posted which are still here, and having googled them I think we should take that photo as having been posted in good faith. If anyone has concerns about its copyright status I'd suggest they raise them with the poster of the picture not in FAC. ϢereSpielChequers 07:30, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

When wanting to search Hanna Schwarz's name being misspelt as Schwartz (one page hit) and wondering who else may be suject to the same problem, I typed in Scwartz by mistake. This got 11 hits. Ive resolved 8 to Schwartz and two to Schwarz and I think I know what the other should be, but the reference is to a 1972 paper only cited online by the wiki page in qustion and its clones. I'm sure you could entertain yourself for months sorting the Schwartzs from the Schwarzs, if you wanted.--Peter cohen (talk) 19:15, 13 October 2008 (UTC)

Hi Peter, I think that would need someone far more into genealogy than I am. I suspect that once you go back a century or two you would find that some people used both spellings, and if there a dialect differences between say Deutsch and SwissDeutsch spellings people may have switched spellings when they moved towns. But yes a meaty project if we can find someone to take it on. ϢereSpielChequers 07:42, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

RE:Chin up

Will do. You'll suffer a similar problem to me, methinks; as well as simple "I disagree with your new advice" it will be "no! Old advice is fine! It should be kept until the point when it causes problems!" the Conservative Party view. I can also see a couple of "people don't read it anyway so why bother"'s coming up. I will, however, put in my two cents (0.5 pence in the current economic climate). Ironholds (talk) 14:51, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

Thanks, the "they don't read it anyway so why bother brigade" hopefully won't be bothered to oppose updating it. As for those who want to keep out of date advice until it causes problems, well before I voted in your RFA I had a look at your oppose votes - and it left me thinking we have a problem with out of date advice leading to candidates on less than 2,000 edits coming forward and being snowed. I'm in a reformer rather than a revolutionary - if you have something dysfunctional sometimes the best thing is to change it bit by bit, until it has evolved into something better. Of course we could go back to some of the snowed candidates and ask them their opinions.... ϢereSpielChequers 15:30, 14 October 2008 (UTC)

My problem is that someone from your IP address is making edits such as this. The reason why I tracked down the company who supplied that IP address is so that any victims of abuse from that IP know where to complain to, and also so that whoever is making those edits knows that they are doing it publicly and can easily be reported to their parents or school (or if adult to the Police). I haven't restored the warning messages because you've obviously seen them, but I have restored the details about your IP address so that if there are any similar incidents in the future they can be dealt with more easily. Falkes de Breauté

Thanks for clearing up after me:). You and User:Choess should form a "cleaning up after Ironhold's crappy copyediting skills" team; whenever I see either of you two on my watchlist it's correcting one of my mistakes! Ironholds (talk) 21:13, 21 October 2008 (UTC).

A pleasure, it was an interesting read. just go on spelling Possession minus the second s and sooner or later I'll pop by. By the way I tried to link Baldwin de Revières, Earl of Devon, and spent a while searching the early Earls of Devon. There seems to be an anomaly between this article and that of William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon, is it possible that Falkes married the widow of an heir to the earldom who predeceased his father the 5th Earl? ϢereSpielChequers 21:44, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Don't think so; the sources I found specifically state the old earl died in 1216/17. Could be a discrepancy in the way the wife/widow's name is spelt? Ironholds (talk) 21:46, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
William de Redvers, 5th Earl of Devon puts the fifth Earls death in Sept 1217 and his son's a year earlier in Sept 1216. There is also a dispute about the numbering of the Earls, can I suggest we consult user:Pmanderson on this?
Ahh I get you; I thought you were referring to a previous Earl. Consulting a third party is probably best; Baldwin (the younger) would most likely have held a subsidiary title, so it wouldn't refer to him in texts as "Earl". Ironholds (talk) 22:03, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
I'm a little rusty on all this; but the fundamental problem is that the numbering of the Earls will differ between sources. They weren't numbered at the time, and some genealogists count Richard de Redvers as first Earl, while others say he was never an Earl at all. The pull of vanity is to count him as Earl, since this will make the Earldom some 40 years older than the attested creation, under the Empress Matilda. What statement is in question? Septentrionalis PMAnderson 22:29, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Falkes de Breauté apparently married the widow of the 5th earl, named Margeret, with the earl dying in 1216/17. My source says 16, which ties in with the earl's son, Baldwin; since Baldwin died before William, however, he wouldn't have been considered an earl since no letter patent would have been issued. The problem with it being William is that his wife's name is different (although it could be the french form, I don't know). Ironholds (talk) 22:32, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
I think in this case it may just be an anomaly re the son of the 5th Earl predeceasing his father. Falkes de Breauté has "In reward John gave de Breauté the hand of Margaret, the widow of Baldwin de Revières, Earl of Devon, who had died in 1216, and daughter of Warin Fitzgerald, the royal chamberlain, and this marriage made de Breauté ‘the equal of an earl’[2] as he inherited the Earldom until the heir reached his majority" Is it possible that this should say "In reward John gave de Breauté the hand of Margaret the daughter of Warin Fitzgerald, the royal chamberlain. She was the widow of Baldwin de Revières, former heir to the Earl of Devon, who had died in 1216, and since the death of the 5th Earl in 1217 her son was the 6th Earl. So this marriage made de Breauté ‘the equal of an earl’[2] as he was regent for the Earldom until his stepson the 6th Earl reached his majority". Would that fit in with the sources that you two used? ϢereSpielChequers 22:48, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Pretty much, although the annulment of Margaret's second marriage, on the grounds that she had been married to Falkes without her consent, should at least be mentioned. I do not see how we can know which side in a thirteenth-century dispute was lying. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 22:58, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
(ec)Source, please. Complete Peerage is quite certain that Falkes married Margaret (née fitz Gerold), and that she was daughter-in-law to the fifth earl; her first husband died before the age of 16, in 1216. Her son, the sixth earl was an infant when Falkes married her - as she later testified, by force.
  • Courtesy title is an anachronism in 1216; Earls were the only one of the five later ranks of the peerage to exist, and it was an office (demonstrated inter permulta alia by the fact that the sixth earl was not invested with the Earldom until 1239). Septentrionalis PMAnderson 22:58, 21 October 2008 (UTC)
Ahh, that needs to be amended then. So, if I'm clear; she married Baldwin, with whom she had a son. His death and the subsequent death of William left the earldom temporarily in the hands of Margaret. When de Breauté married her, her son became his ward, making him "equal to an earl" due to the lands and power he now held until the child reached his majority. Ironholds (talk) 00:37, 22 October 2008 (UTC)
That's pretty much what Cokayne says, yes. Please note also that he was granted Plympton by the Crown after his father-in-law's death; but then Crown transfers of land and Earldoms were not uncommon then. Septentrionalis PMAnderson 16:26, 22 October 2008 (UTC)

OK these edits and your vandalism of my user page are all the reminder I need as to why I nommed your user page for deletion. If you continue on your current path then yes a few more edits like this and that, will get you blocked. If that happens and you make good on your threat here then I might as well point out now that IP addresses are tracable. So whether you edit from school, home or work if you vandalise my pages from an IP address your ISP will get a complaint. From your spelling and homophobia I'm guessing you are from the USA, if so then you should know that tracing an IP address is as easy as this.
But all that doesn't need to happen, provided you agree to stop vandalising and start doing something useful here instead. Oh and please install a spellchecker, I'm sufficiently confident and settled in my sexuality not to be upset by being called a faggot or dick licker by a stranger on the web, but typos like vandalizism do bug me a little. So please lighten up, leave your homophobia behind when you log on to Wikipedia and do something useful. ϢereSpielChequers 15:18, 3 November 2008 (UTC)

Hi WSP, I took a look at list of demons but I am afraid I don't have much to offer you in improving it. I had no idea there were so many named demons! In Catholic Theology I think that the seven deadly sins: Pride, Gluttony, Sloth, Jealousy, Vanity, Greed and Lust are sometimes presented in Art as actual demons instead of just vices so maybe that will help. Abortion

The problem is that "ending a pregnancy" is doublespeak that comes from the pro-choice camp. Its deliberately obfuscative, when the actual action isn't in fact terminating a condition in the mother, but is rather terminating a condition in the fetus. -Zahd (talk) 21:18, 1 November 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm I suspect the choice lobby would have some equally trenchant things to say about your side. Can I suggest that you try to edit in such a way that your views aren't quite so obvious? ϢereSpielChequers 23:10, 3 November 2008 (UTC)
Im not sure what you mean. I think using the language "ending a pregnancy" is doublespeak and violates WP:WEASEL. The relevant concept is the status of the fetus, not the mother. The article is not about aborting mothers, after all, but rather aborting fetuses. -Zahd (talk) 19:35, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
PS: I'd like to move/copy this discussion to the abortion talk page. Let me know. -Zahd (talk) 19:43, 7 November 2008 (UTC)
Dear Zahd, no objection to you moving this discussion there, but I would caution you that your view that mothers rights are not relevant to the subject is liable to be perceived as strongly anti-choice. If IVF technology had improved to the point where babies could be brought to term without implantation into a woman then yes it would be possible to abort a fetus without a woman having an abortion. But as far as I'm aware the science isn't that advanced yet. Can I suggest you read some of the prochoice literature and try to understand their view, remember what you are trying to achieve is a neutral article. ϢereSpielChequers 09:54, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

I have found a source for the reason why Liz Habib and Kim Dillon left KTVK. Arbiteroftruth (talk) 03:11, 25 September 2008 (UTC)
Good to hear you have a source, but you might want to ponder a while as to whether the information is encyclopaedic as opposed to a local news story of the time. Also if you haven't already read it Wikipedia:NPOV_tutorial#Accusations is worth a read. ϢereSpielChequers 17:57, 27 September 2008 (UTC)
The reason why Liz Habib left the station might not be encyclopedic, but the reason why Kim Dillon (and on an unrelated note, Rob Koebel over at KNXV) left their stations is notable, for they left because they either violated a law (Dillon) or compromised their Journalistic Integrity (Koebel). These are serious charges. Arbiteroftruth (talk) 21:46, 28 September 2008 (UTC)
Uh huh, I was actually thinking of WP:NOT#NEWS, particularly the bit about News reports. "Wikipedia considers the historical notability of persons and events." Were those charges so serious that everyone who faces them would expect that info to be permanently in Wikipedia? ϢereSpielChequers

Red diaper baby vandal

I suggest you don't "waste" level-1 warnings on him anymore. He's not making any constructive edits, and it's obviously the same vandal showing up at different IP addresses. VG 09:49, 10 November 2008 (UTC)

Oh dear, I'd been hoping that this would go quiet once the election was over. You may be right, question is would admins block if this went to AIV on just a 4im? And would it make a difference to the vandal as the last three warnings all went to separate IP addresses - I suspect the Red Diaper vandal has learned to reset their IP after almost every attack, and is not sticking around to see our messages. I hadn't been bothering to look up the IP addresses, but having now looked up the four IP addresses used in the last five attacks they are all from "Qwest Communications Corporation, Denver CO USA", if we wanted to escalate this we could put a tailored {{whois}} message on Talk:Red diaper baby. ϢereSpielChequers 12:01, 10 November 2008 (UTC)
I'm not familiar with procedures for this kind of behavior, but it seems like worth reporting to WP:LTA if he does it again. VG 13:19, 12 November 2008 (UTC)
The latest got a block after I think their third attack. It's possible they haven't even twigged how they reset their IP address, and just do it accidentally from time to time. As long as they stick to the one article I doubt that LTA would help - we just need a few eyes on this article, and as you said maybe more of a hair trigger, so we go to AIV and get blocks in after fewer edits. Well I'm not sure I'd want to be taking an article there myself as some reviewers can be a tad abrupt; but I just read the ones I find interesting, do a bit of copy editing and ask pedantic points where I don't understand things, this was a good example. So far I've found it an extremely congenial interesting place. I find the authors usually very tolerant of ignorant questions from people who know nothing about their pet subject, especially if you fix typos etc and only query what you perceive as anomalies. I've had one review where I put in a lot of time and the editor disappeared, and another rather controversial topic where the author and that articles regulars were so used to defending their article against vandalism that they were over-defensive with any suggestions from reviewers. But overall its the place on Wikipedia where I currently most enjoy spending time. ϢereSpielChequers 15:42, 3 December 2008 (UTC)

Wikiproject outreach

WP:OUTREACH now exists in larval stage. Please visit the talkpage to help it pupate. //roux   21:42, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

I like what you're saying at WP:VPP

I think it's likely more pages will be protected over time, and that would be a good thing. However, before people actually know which kinds of pages would be more likely to be protected, this idea may scare some people. - Dan Dank55 (send/receive) 15:12, 19 December 2008 (UTC)

Fair point, but sad that some people react so negatively to change. To me it seem fairly obvious that one consequence of increasing the number of editors who can edit protected pages will be that more pages will be protected, a bit like the invention of the sewing machine lead to more complicated clothing designs that needed more stitches. I like the idea that anyone can edit, and I see lots of good edits from IPs, but there are contentious pages which attract vandals, and complex subjects which shouldn't be edited without reading the talk page, and for these semi or full protection seems to me a good idea. Seasons Greetings to you too!

WSC, thank you for sending me some wikilove. I celebrate Christmas which is why I am a bit scarce on Wikipedia right now. What do you celebrate? NancyHeise talk 02:45, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Hmmm that's a bit complicated, but as a lapsed atheist with nephews young enough to believe in Father Christmas I will be celebrating the Solstice tomorrow, Xmas with family on the 25th and Hogmanay with friends. Plus I've already had five celebration meals with various circles of friends or colleagues from different parts of my life. ϢereSpellCheckers 22:55, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Seasons greetings!

Seasons greetings to you too! Sorry about pasting your own template here, but it's the thought that counts, right? ;D

Thanks, I put that line in the template to make it easy to reuse, and I'm delighted that people are using it, but I did laugh out loud when I just saw your talk page! ϢereSpielChequers 10:29, 20 December 2008 (UTC)

Merry Christmas!

Merry Christmas!
WereSpielChequers, here's hoping you're having a wonderful Christmas, and here's also hoping that all your family and friends are well. Lets all hope that the year coming will be a good one! If we've had disputes in the past, I hold no grudges, especially at such a time as this. If you don't know I am, I apologise, feel free to remove this from your page.
Come and say hi, I won't bite, I swear! It could even be good for me, you know - I'm feeling a little down at the moment with all of these snowmen giving me the cold shoulder :(

Hi, Life is ... interesting. I can really relate to your old "true romance is dead" signoff, plus I have some big decisions to make in Real Life and will probably be taking some wikibreaks in the next quarter. ϢereSpellCheckers 00:35, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the eid message. Heres yours i guess.

WikiCup

WikiCup alternate account

Unfortunately, it turns out that because a bot is scoring the contest, alternate accounts can't be taken into consideration. Sorry for the inconvenience. Garden. 14:12, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

No problem, I do have an alt account but I don't use it much so it makes little difference to me. ϢereSpielChequers 15:01, 21 December 2008 (UTC)

WikiCup notice

The 2009 WikiCup will begin on January 1, 2009. The first round will run through March 31, 2009. For more information on this tournament, read the "about" section on the main WikiCup page.

This year, we have a different system in calculating points. At User:Garden/WikiCup/Submissions, you will find information about submitting your article (and other) work to earn points. Each contestant will have their own individual subpage for submitting completed work to us.

This year, User:ST47 will also be running one of his bots to calculate mainspace edits and read your submission subpages to calculate the point values you receive based on our scoring chart.

Questions or comment? Ask at the talk page or go directly to Garden or IMatthew's talk page. Good luck and Happy Holidays! -- ayematthew and Garden. 14:19, 23 December 2008 (UTC)
