Thank you as well and i am glad to help. Simply south (talk) 11:05, 16 January 2008 (UTC)
Administrative geography of Swansea
You have edited a number of articles on places in and around Swansea, changing the location from "in the City and County of Swansea" (or similar) to "in the county of Swansea". I do not believe that there is a legal entity called the "county of Swansea". As the article on the City and County of Swansea states, in 1996, another local government reform saw the City of Swansea merged with parts of the Lliw Valley district to form a unitary authority under the name of the 'City and County of Swansea'. Thanks.Pondle (talk) 13:57, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Consistent statistical comparisons between Swansea and Cardiff
I have noticed a number of your edits of the Swansea article drawing comparison between the relative populations of Swansea and Cardiff, as they may be variously defined (cities, unitary authorities, wider urban areas). Please note that it is good statistical practice to make comparisons on the basis of consistent data, collected or estimated in a comparable way, at a similar time, and referring to equivalent geographical units. I believe that you are mixing up data from different years referring to different geographical areas. For example, please do not compare a 2006 estimate for a unitary authority with Census 2001 data on a city - that is not a 'like for like' comparison, and is misleading. Here is a list of appropriate comparisons with the data sources. You can check the sources yourself -
Please do not delete my items without discussion, the Astra satellite transmits local radio Wales which has studios in Cardiff and Swansea. I believe this is relevant under the heading of local media which is where I put it. I will therefore be reinstating. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canol (talk • contribs) 00:20, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Swansea and Cardiff cities (Census 2001 stats for urban areas as defined in the ONS 'Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales' report, see Table KS01)[1] Swansea - 169,880 Cardiff - 292,150 On this basis Swansea's population is about 58% of Cardiff's.
Swansea and Cardiff 'wider' urban areas (Census 2001 stats for urban areas as defined in the ONS 'Key Statistics for urban areas in England and Wales' report, see Table KS01)[2] Swansea - 270,506 Cardiff - 327,706 On this basis Swansea's population is about 82.5% of Cardiff's.
Swansea and Cardiff unitary authorities (Census 2001 stats from [3]) Swansea - 223,301 Cardiff - 305,353 On this basis Swansea's population is about 73% of Cardiff's.Pondle (talk) 19:53, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- For the purpose of clarity, to describe the estimates as "more recent and accurate" - the Census is always the most accurate measurement. Intermediate estimates are just that - estimates. 90.203.45.168 (talk) 20:06, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
- Please note the definition of wikt:accuracy. An actual count is always more accurate than an estimate. 90.203.45.168 (talk) 20:20, 24 January 2008 (UTC)
Split of valley lines
Just letting you know i've done a split for valley lines See: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Talk:Valley_Lines as the overlap seemed quite pointless. So the Valley lines page can now be developed properly. As i see you're a regular editor, i thought i'd let you know! Shazz0r (talk) 15:30, 2 February 2008 (UTC)
Only 50mph permanent motorway speed limit on motorway
Why have you removed the statement about the M4 speed limit at Port Talbot. It is the only permanent speed restriction on any motorway in Wales or the M4 come to that. Regards Canol —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canol (talk • contribs) 00:25, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
- Its in Port Talbot have changed it back for now but it might need tidying up. Canol —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canol (talk • contribs) 01:05, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
- OK all agreed, best wishes. ps I've just learned how I should sign. Canol (talk) 01:27, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Swansea Urban Area
Please note that there is nothing unique or unusual about the geographical 'spread' of the Swansea Urban Area. ONS notes that "urban areas are interspersed with non-urban areas, appearing as holes in the wider urban area" (p.48 [4]). A cursory glance at map 3.2 in this document is illustrative - for example, look at the West Yorkshire Urban Area, Greater Manchester Urban Area or Nottingham Urban Area.
To define an urban area, ONS uses a consistent methodology based on contiguous areas with a minimum population density and number of people. Continuous urban development along narrow corridors in the Swansea Valley, Llansamlet/Birchgrove/Skewen & Briton Ferry/Baglan link Swansea to Pontardawe/Clydach, Neath and Port Talbot respectively, creating a single urban area. This is apparent from the map.
BTW I do not think that the touchstone of every article on Swansea should be a comparison with Cardiff. This is irrelevant, arbitrary (you could choose any of the 25 major urban areas) and gives undue weight to the city chosen as a comparator. Other articles in this category do not include similar text. Besides, comparisons are already available in List of conurbations in the United Kingdom. Thanks.Pondle (talk) 18:11, 4 February 2008 (UTC)
Valley Lines Network
Could i ask you to just review my addition of the Ebbw Valley Line to both Template:Valley Lines Network and Valley Lines? Simply south (talk) 20:34, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- I thought it was worth mentioning Newport and i have put the junction down showing the connection use to exist (or it still does but as a freight line as that part hast not been upgraded yet). I'm also not use to working with BS7-2. Simply south (talk) 21:01, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- I changed some to proposed as they haven't yet been given planning permission and also slightly altered the note on Newport. Simply south (talk) 21:18, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well done to you too on creating it. Simply south (talk) 21:20, 8 February 2008 (UTC)
Wales
I cannot understand why my improvement to a sentence re Murphy/Hain was considered to be vandalism. The current sentence is ambiguous. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Penparcau (talk • contribs) 23:51, 10 February 2008 (UTC)
As long as Wales remains part of the United Kingdom, this article will continue to state that its country of origin is the United Kingdom and any further such alterations by you will be regarded as vandalism and dealt with as such. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 01:18, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
- I apologise, I didn't mean to bite, and you are quite right to be proud of Wales; I've spent many good times there myself. But from what I've seen of your previous edits, this does seem to be important to you; I'd only point out (with the best of intentions) that the days of Owain Glyndwr are long gone! --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 01:24, 11 February 2008 (UTC)
Hiya dude. Thanks for you efforts on transport related articles. Just want to clear up any confusion about the Heart of Wales Line route. Nobody is saying the physical line starts in Swansea. The line starts just east of Llanelli railway station in Carmarthenshire. However, the physical line does pass though the Swansea local authority area and has a halt at Pontarddulais, after which the line re-enters Carmarthenshire again. This can be seen clearly on a local authority map of Wales. I see somebody else has amended it already. WelshBloke (talk) 11:21, 18 February 2008 (UTC)
Promotion of Cardiff in the Bridgend article
I was undoing an IP's unnecessary change, which disrupted an entirely unrelated article for the sole purpose of promoting Cardiff by adding peacock terms. Re: the status of Cardiff as a 'major city', this is depends on your definition of a major city, which is entirely subjective. Cardiff is the capital of Wales and one of the top 20 settlements in the UK, but it is not in the top 10. In 2006 the Assembly Government Economy Advisory Panel produced a report on Economic Futures for Wales noted that "Cardiff could either move into the top tier of UK regional capitals, or play a secondary role to Bristol."[5]
Thanks
Thanks for the barnstar :-) Still a lot of opening dates missing - hopefully they aren't all lost to history - I'll try and get to researching what I can! Regards, --TicketMan - Talk - contribs 12:51, 21 February 2008 (UTC)
Bay Pointe
Just in case you don't watch my talk page... For the record, I don't care either way about the height of Bay Pointe - but please note that the granting of planning permission does not necessarily imply a start of construction. A significant period often elapses between the two; sometimes developments with planning consent are not actually built!
BTW if you want to discuss Bay Pointe in more detail why not create an article on it?Pondle (talk) 15:06, 2 March 2008 (UTC)
Wales vandal from a few minutes ago
Actually if I had seen the Madeline McCann stuff, I would have gone straight to a uw 4. Now that I look at it again, the IP is static enough. Actually the IP registered to the University of Portsmouth - they must be so proud. Anyway, I'll keep an eye on it for as long as I am online. FlowerpotmaN·(t) 00:39, 7 March 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the Barnstar
Hi Welshleprechaun,
Thanks for the Barnstar, hopefully I can get A4232 road to GA status, but I am also going to eventually try for Cardiff Arms Park and also Wales Millennium Centre while I am at it. Seth Whales (talk) 23:53, 8 March 2008 (UTC)
Hi Welshleprechaun, we obviously have many of the same interests. As you are an expert on railway stations I checked with the Port Talbot Historical society and the Port Talbot Railway station was opened in 1850 http://beehive.thisissouthwales.co.uk/default.asp?WCI=SiteHome&ID=5906&PageID=72583
Another date to add to your list here List of railway stations in Wales Canol (talk) 23:01, 10 March 2008 (UTC) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canol (talk • contribs) 20:35, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

Please do not delete my contributions without discussion with me first. I believe the item on broadcasting local programmes via satellite was relevant under the heading of Local Media particularly as radio Wales has studios in Swansea and Cardiff —Preceding unsigned comment added by Canol (talk • contribs) 00:32, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I am not so sure that your statement that "most other editors agree with you" is correct or substantiated. Maybe you should consider moving Swansea Local Media section to a new article so as to increase its relevance. Canol (talk) 01:00, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
OK, now on the Swansea discussion page, thanks.Canol (talk) 02:15, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
I reverted the completion date to not before 2014 as the reference stated "The project should be completed between 2014 and 2016" ie it follows that between 2014 and 2016 is not before 2014, which is what I wrote. Also the BBC report suggests that with current housing market downturn then this project will not complete. Canol (talk) 03:09, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Cardiff - primate city?
I've requested a third opinion on this. We should try to resolve the dispute in a sensible fashion. Pondle (talk) 23:32, 26 March 2008 (UTC)
Olympic venue
Hi there, don't suppose you have any more info on the possibility of the Cardiff International Sports Village hosting 2012 olympic events? I'd not heard this before, a reference would be ideal! Ta Paulbrock (talk) 16:48, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
- Ah, OK that makes sense. Millennium Stadium was mentioned in the bid docs, I think it's fairly well referenced already. A list of around 600 training venues was published by London 2012 - prob not relevant to list them all! Paulbrock (talk) 18:06, 13 April 2008 (UTC)
"22 stations"
Emphasising this fact across several different articles is boastful, and potentially lends undue weight to them over the other stations served. 81.110.106.169 (talk) 15:22, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- You may be surprised to learn that it is possible to present facts in ways that are not entirely neutral. 81.110.106.169 (talk) 15:24, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- Please explain how the sentence there are 22 railway stations in Cardiff is not written from a neutral point of view. Welshleprechaun (talk) 15:26, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- That is a bare statement of fact, however, that is out-of-context and therefore not a valid comparison. 81.110.106.169 (talk) 15:27, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- It is not out of context if it is in an article relating to rail transport in Cardiff. You are simply removing the content based on your biased point of view which violates Wikipedia rules. Welshleprechaun (talk) 15:30, 20 April 2008 (UTC)
- I meant that in simply stating it here it is out-of-context. Also, please demonstrate the "biased point of view" you are referring to. 81.110.106.169 (talk) 15:42, 20 April 2008 (UTC)

Dialling codes
Hi, I don't know if the list of Wales dialling codes is on your watch list, but in case it isn't I thought maybe you'd be interested to know it has been moved to List of UK dialling codes covering Wales (I kid you not!). Enaidmawr (talk) 22:43, 30 April 2008 (UTC)
