Wahoo

I reverted that person's edit to the Wahoo page, but it showed that you did it? Why is that? Stooben Rooben (talk) 00:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

I beat you to it. Don't worry. The bots beat me when it comes to reverting. WadeSimMiser (talk) 01:11, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Oh, okay. Thanks. I've never ran into that on any other wikis. Stooben Rooben (talk) 18:54, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

warning

Please do not leave messages on the talk pages of IP addresses. Many IP addresses are public computers used by many people, and a warning against vandolism is pointless as it will never be read by the vandal. Moreover, all you accomplish is to create a new talk page for a user who does not really exist. I know you meant well but it was a mistake, just do not do it again. Slrubenstein | Talk 00:29, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Is this just for welcome messages only or for everything (including warnings)? WadeSimMiser (talk) 00:35, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Really everything, unless you have compelling proof that a single person is using that IP address. Sometimes it is possible to prove this but usually all we learn is that it is a public location. In some kid uses a high school or public library or internet cafe to vandalize Wikipedia, all we can do is revert the vandalism - the next person who uses that computer terminal may not be a vandal, or the kid may go to another IP address the next time s/he wishes to vandalize a page. Similarly, a new user making good edits who is anonymous may not always use the same IP address (same reasons) so there is no point welcoming them. If they contribute to the talk page regularly the polite thing is then to invite them to register a username. But there is virtually nothing ever to be gained from writing on the talk page of an anonymous IP address, and when doing so creates a new page in fact your very well-intentioned act is just disrupting Wikipedia, by creating what really is a nonsense page. Does this make sense? Slrubenstein | Talk 00:42, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Yes. WadeSimMiser (talk) 00:54, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I am glad. i know many people do this (create new user pages for phantoms, in the process of trying to fight vandalism) but it should be discouraged (please help!). If someone uses an IP address to vandalize a page once, that IP address can usually be safely ignored. If the address is used persistently to vandalize Wikipedia our vandalism policy spells out steps that can be taken, like trying to identify the location of the IP address. If an IP address makes lots of vandalism edits in a short time, an admin could block the account for six or twelve hours which is usually enough time for that kid to leave the library or internet cafe. But there is usually little point in doing anything more until we know the nature of the address. Slrubenstein | Talk 01:05, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Please ignore Slrubenstein's warning. Your actions are perfectly correct, and this little tinpot admin is running amok. Corvus cornixtalk 01:16, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

I wouldn't put it as strongly as that, but Slrubenstein has missed the point here. Carry on issuing warnings as normal. We won't be able to block any IP otherwise. --Rodhullandemu 01:22, 6 September 2008 (UTC)

Please review WP:Patent nonsense. Using the WP:CSD#G1 rationale requires that the article be literally gibberish; attack pages are not eligible for this criteria. - CobaltBlueTony™ talk 20:18, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks!

Thanks for reverting the vandalism on my talk page so quickly! LonelyBeacon (talk) 00:32, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

My thanks too for reverting the vandalism on my user page. Kind regards, --Malcolmxl5 (talk) 23:41, 26 September 2008 (UTC)
