Beach Bum From Hawaii and Reverse Funnel System
[edit]By the way, I proposed to delete Beach Bum From Hawaii for reasons that I explained there. If you disagree with my reasons, you can remove the proposed deletion, but I hope you agree with me that just an article on Reverse funnel system (I restored the old version) is enough. I replaced Ty Coughlin, which was a copy of the old RFS version, by a redirect to RFS. I would also ask you to consider deleting the various variants of "50 k a month" by placing {{db-author}} on them. Your vigor in documenting RFS suggests that you've been involved in it and lost money and you now want to warn other people through Wikipedia. I could understand that; in my opinion, RFS is a scam, but I think anyone who considers participating in RFS would look for information on RFS, and not on all the other terms that you redirected to Ty Coughlin. Han-Kwang (t) 09:02, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hankwang, thanks for helping out with the Reverse funnel system article. Although I was never personally involved with RFS, I dislike them like any other scammers. The reason I decided to take action, was because I have heard their ad on my local radio station KRLA for a couple of months already, and felt that it is my duty as a community member to do something. I first tried google, and was immediately hit with the spam that you mentioned in the article. I then tried the wikipedia, only to find that your initial article, that was quite informative, was effectively hidden by two successive edits by Reswobslc and PeterSymonds. I am not certain about Reswobslc, but after looking at the PeterSymonds, I started suspecting that may be he is a part of the scam. Anyways, I saw that their edit was made almost 4 months ago, and it went unnoticed by you, so I wasn't certain about which one of you would get alerted by my post in the discussion section of the article (for all I knew, you might be the one "Retired" and not PeterSymonds), and considering the semi-protection status of the redirect, I opted for duplicating your article under the Ty Coughlin, then waiting 4 days to become an established user (at least that's what I thought I would need besides making 10 edits based on the relevant article), removing the semi-protection, reposting your article under the Reverse funnel system, and changing Ty Coughlin article to redirect to it. Your intervention was actually the best possible outcome, so thanks again.
- About Beach Bum From Hawaii. The reason I created that link was because in the commercial on KRLA Ty Coughlin identifies himself as a such, he starts out "... [this is] Ty Coughlin, Beach Bum From Hawaii...", and I think if anyone forgets (or misspells) Ty Coughlin, they would definitely remember "Beach Bum From Hawaii" part, also, remember the Google bombing factor, it may be tough to find it any way. Same goes for 50k a month, as this is a the website that is being advertised in the radio program. You seem like a pro in this field, so I'll leave it up to you. If you thinks this is not a good enough reason to keep it, let me know, and I'll delete those. But I think that at least Beach Bum From Hawaii should stay.WH Coordinator (talk) 10:46, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- OK. I wouldn't have noticed the issue if you hadn't posted something on the Talk page (I don't check my watchlist all the time). I won't take further action on the various redirecting articles, but don't be surprised if someone else does. Don't worry too much about Google bombing; Wikipedia tends to rank very high on Google for all kinds of both obscure and competitive terms. If I were you, I would find some independent references about the 50k and beach bum stuff and include it in the RFS article. Redirects to articles that don't contain the keyword tend to be confusing. I think the beach bum was in the article at some point, but I removed it because it was unsourced (see WP:BLP). Han-Kwang (t) 15:16, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, it seems we have a problem with Reswobslc (talk · contribs) on Reverse funnel system. I think the best you can do is collect solid references. I googled around a bit, but it is indeed quite hard to find pages that are not part of the RFS googlebombing. I don't think it is wise to start official procedures against R. at this point; it's better to try to reach a compromise first and only escalate if that fails. You will have a better case if you can show that you tried to reach a compromise first. It is also not a good idea to say bad things about an editor in a discussion where that editor participates since that will only polarize the discussion more and make a compromise less likely. I'd advise you to remove your accusation (for which you don't have real proof) from that talk page yourself and maybe apologize. Han-Kwang (t) 19:25, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- you are right. I'll see what I can find, and apologize to Reswobslc.WH Coordinator (talk) 19:47, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- you know what, I think I'll take my apology back. I think there is a problem here. I mean you have got to admit, Reswobslc is being a little weird to say the least. What he says doesn't quite add up. First he says he doesn't like the references, then "We don't Need Another Article..." and "Pig with lipstick" like he's watching too many political debates or something. You have to admit something fishy is going on here WH Coordinator (talk) 05:53, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ask yourself what purpose that will serve other than personal gratification. If at some point you want to escalate this issue, they will consider not only the content itself, but also the behavior of all people that are involved. (See: WP:DR) Moreover, the chance that this is going to escalate is smaller if at least one of the sides stays calm. Yes, it can be tough, and it is unfortunate that this is your first experience as a Wikipedia editor. I often remove content myself when it looks like spam, and to be honest, the present refences look kind of spammy even though I am not affiliated with them. Han-Kwang (t) 06:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- Ok, you are right. Although he deleted my comments anyway, if you still want me to, I'll write another apology.WH Coordinator (talk) 08:09, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Here are a couple of links I managed to find:
- http://www.ripoffreport.com/reports/0/329/RipOff0329601.htm
- http://www.ripoffreport.com/searchresults.asp?q5=Reverse%20Funnel%20System&q1=ALL&q4=&q6=&q3=&q2=&q7=&searchtype=0&submit2=Search!&Search=Search
- http://au.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20080108111118AAQJpKO
- http://www.onlineprofitscoach.com/blog/reverse-funnel-system-review-global-resorts-network/
The best link is probably ripoffreport.com. It's unfortunate that it never hit any real media as far as I can tell, and that many of the websites that are criticizing RFS are promoting some other dubious scheme. Maybe you can bring it to the attention of the FTC? :-) Han-Kwang (t) 20:54, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- Hankwang, thanks for the tip. I filed the report with Federal Trade Commission. I also wrote to Los Angeles Times. Hopefully they'll do something. I don't know how you were able to find this links, you must know something about web-browsing that I don't. They should be good enough for the Reverse funnel system article. I'll paste them in the discussion section for Reswobslc to examine. WH Coordinator (talk) 21:55, 14 September 2008 (UTC)
- Well, thank Steve Gigl for it. As for me, it helps to ignore every search result that has a video or that has a title with a question mark or the word "truth". But now you tell me where you found that there are 2000 hits on the RFS article. :) Han-Kwang (t) 06:32, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- It's number that pops up near the "Reverse Funnel System" in My Watchlist. Now that it actually reads (-2406) I'm starting to suspect that this was the number of characters in the article when it was added, and negative, when it was deleted and replaced with forward. But that's not the main thing, what do you think about Reswobslc's Request for Protection Page entry? Are we anywere close to the complaint-time? (by the way who's Steve Gigl?)WH Coordinator (talk) 07:12, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- One more thing, is there any way to revert Reswobslc's forward to your article, and continue discussion while it is posted?WH Coordinator (talk) 08:09, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
- The number in the watchlist is indeed the change in article length. Gigl is the author of stevegigl.com. There is no technical problem for me to restore the article text, but this will only result in an unproductive edit war since Reswobslc did not change his opinion yet. The article text has been hidden for 3 months, so two more days doesn't hurt. You could consider copying the article text to User:WH Coordinator/Reverse funnel system and try to improve the text over there, without R bothering you. I'd propose that we discuss the other issue in private email. If you enter your email address in preferences, you can send me an email through Wikipedia. Han-Kwang (t) 14:26, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

First off, I apologize for the spam. You are receiving this message because you have indicated that you are in Southern California or interested in Southern California topics (either via category or WikiProject, or I happen to know personally).
I would like to invite you to the Los Angeles edition of Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art, a photography scavenger hunt to be held at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) on Saturday, February 28, 2009, from 1:00 to 7:00 PM. All photos are intended for use in Wikipedia articles or on Wikimedia Commons. There will be a prize available for the person who gets the most photos on the list.
If you don't like art, why not come just to meet your fellow Wikipedians. Apparently, we haven't had a meetup in this area since June 2006!
If you are interested in attending, please add your name to Wikipedia:Wikipedia Loves Art#Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Please make a note if you are traveling to the area (train or plane) and need transportation, which can probably be arranged via carpool, but we need time to coordinate. Lodging is as of right now out of scope, but we could discuss that if enough people are interested.
Thank you and I hope to see you there! howcheng {chat} 00:39, 10 January 2009 (UTC)
Were you planning on doing anything with this previously deleted bit of spam-bait as promised, despite having done absolutely nothing for the last ten months? --Calton | Talk 06:58, 20 July 2009 (UTC)

---|---|
Dear fellow Wikipedian, The LA Wikipedia community has three events in mid-February -- please consider attending! First, we have a Valentine's Day edit-a-thon appropriately named Redondo Loves Wikipedia, which will take place at the Redondo Beach Public Library from 10am to 1pm on Saturday, February 14. Join library staff, the Redondo Beach Historical Society, and others to help improve Wikipedia's coverage of Redondo Beach! Second, we have a Wik-Ed Women editing session on Tuesday, February 17 from 6pm to 10pm at the Los Angeles Contemporary Archive downtown. This series of informal get-togethers is designed to encourage Los Angeles women-in-the-arts (though all are welcome!) to contribute their expertise to Wikipedia, specifically expanding content about women artists. Third, we have an Unforgetting LA event put on by East of Borneo in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute. Come help improve Wikipedia's coverage of LA design and architecture, and have an awesome free day at the museum -- parking will be validated for edit-a-thon participants! If you'd like to use particular books from GRI's great collection, be sure to email before 2/13 (instructions at event page). And be sure to check out our main meetup page, because we already have three SoCal events scheduled for early March! I hope to see you there! Dear WH Coordinator, You're invited to a zoom call, taking place on February 11, with the goal of improving the article on Los Angeles to Featured article status! I often find it daunting to approach the Big Subjects on my own—so if you, like me, want a time to sit down with fellow dedicated editors and tackle something important and complex, this is the zoom for you! I, unfortunately, have no way to transmit snacks over zoom; but I trust you to exercise good judgement and discretion in selecting snacks of your own.
