A tag has been placed on Gagliani requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies. You may also wish to consider using a Wizard to help you create articles - see the Article Wizard.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Lastly, please note that if the page does get deleted, you can contact one of these admins to request that they userfy the page or have a copy emailed to you. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 21:22, 18 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

(the advice below edit-conflicted with the above)

Hello and thank you for your help. I must admit, I'm confused by the back and forth format of Talk pages, and unsure just where to post anything!

I think I'm in danger of having my bio page deleted, though I believe I had relayed only facts, not opinions or platforms. As an author, I just wanted to be represented in the listings. My bio is available from the publication CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS and I am also listed in WHO'S WHO in AMERICA, but I'm unsure how to reference those articles.

Thanks so very much for your help!

Answering your question on the article talk page

[edit]

Another administrator has declined the speedy deletion request on your article, though it may still be proposed for deletion if a user considers that it does not meet requirements - there is no central authority for this kind of thing, though there are agreed standards and rules.

To avoid deletion, any article needs to show, by means of independent references, that the subject is notable - a technical term in Wikipedia, not a subjective judgement, but meaning that a subject "has received significant coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject" - explained in more detail at Notability (people) and WP:CREATIVE.

Writing about yourself is discouraged in Wikipedia, for reasons explained here. In writing about yourself you have from our point of view a conflict of interest: there is good advice on editing with a COI at User:Uncle G/On notability#Writing about subjects close to you:

When writing about subjects that are close to you, don't use your own personal knowledge of the subject, and don't cite yourself, your web site, or the subject's web site. Instead, use what is written about the subject by other people, independently, as your sources. Cite those sources in your very first edit. If you don't have such sources, don't write.

It's worth reading the whole of that link. Independent references are the key to establishing notability. It is also important to avoid any hint of promotional tone or the use of peacock terms, and to ensure that everything in the article is verifiable from the references. The links in the Welcome paragraph above will tell you more. One more thing I should make clear: a difference between Wikipedia and the "notice-board" sort of web-site is that no Wikipedia article is owned by its author, or by anyone - see WP:OWN. Other editors can and will edit "your" article - if you want one that you can control, Wikipedia is not the place for it.

Thanks for your help. As I wrote ... somewhere ... maybe the other user's talk page? (new to this format!) I was attempting to include a fact-based bio, not for publicity. My bio appears in CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS and I'm also listed in WHO'S WHO in AMERICA, but I don't know how to reference those articles other than to mention them. The Wikipedia experience has turned out to be more complicated than I expected, LOL.

Checking in again. I had hoped to determine how to attach the biography entry to the Wikipedia categories "American Novelists" and "American Thriller Writers," which I note include a good number of contemporaries. I've noticed that other authors also link to interviews - I can round up several and post those links. If anyone can help or show me how to add the page to the above-named categories, I would be grateful. WDGagliani (talk) 18:17, 25 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mr. Gagliani, I'll be up front and tell you that I have a big problem with you writing about yourself. It still appears to be self-promotion, which is specifically prohibited on Wikipedia. I'm also not convinced that you have met our requirements for notability. If someone (preferable not you) doesn't show me how you meet our notability requirements, I will nominate this article for a formal article for deletion discussion. Fair warning. - Realkyhick (Talk to me) 04:45, 26 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on your user page, User:WDGagliani/W.D. Gagliani, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page appears to be blatant advertising which only promotes or publicises a company, product, group or service. This is a violation of our policies regarding acceptable use of user pages — user pages are intended for active editors of Wikipedia to communicate with one another as part of the process of creating encyclopedic content, and should not be mistaken for free webhosting resources or advertising space. Please read the guidelines on spam, the guidelines on user pages, and, especially, our FAQ for Organizations.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, then please contact the deleting administrator.
