Categories

Thanks for your note about categories. I've enabled Hotcat at Multichill's suggestion. What happens now? Is it automatic or do I select something with each upload? Like maybe the category button I've noticed on the upload page?

Maybe I can help with the En edits if you get in touch (if I've understood you).

On tools, I'm no help. I'm "not very young" and have difficulties with them more often than not (unless I decide to use something constantly and get acquainted). So, best would probably be to ask Multichill for advice, or at least, to ask him where to go for advice. If I need to grab Categories, I do it manually, beginning from a similar file which seems to be well-categorized by someone else, for a while.

I also feel unable to get en=N or en=4 speakers (there's a category for each, but it is full of folks who did not edit for months, so, no help). Therefore, if you just could find out for me HOW to "tag" an article the best way, in order to attract as proofreader, or where I should apply for such, it would be great (and I would not need to address same few persons all too much).

Last articles I worked on in enWP were Wilhelm Jerusalem, Otto Glöckel, Otto Felix Kanitz, and I would be happy to know that they are in "English", one day, rather than in "W.'s English" ;)) [on facts, you mostly would have to trust me -- I of course used German language literature and a few Websites].

On COM, I work on an article (maybe it will be a series, one for each working period) about Van Gogh, to balance the WP+COM view on him (which is all-to-much "stereotype", up to now, and focussed just on painting [as the market did, too]. His draftsmanship was highly neglected for ~118 years). You can have a look at the exposé, but it's in my private backyard until at least one part of it is somewhat ~finished (I hoped to be able to present something for Christmas, but am going to fail; you may have a look at "Early period", which is "in [slow] progress", but the rest is not even a good dummy. Do not edit there up to now, there will be too many changes before it can be published). You would however be most welcome to care about questions I've put on Commons:Category_talk:Vincent_van_Gogh#Translation:_Help_needed -- Thanks, Wolfgang (talk) 16:10, 22 December 2008 (UTC)

although I'm able to READ French ~ as well as EN, I switch over to en when writing:
My not very young brain seems to "store" these two languages in "completely different departments," which means that I have serious troubles to switch from en (which I recently, say ~40 years, use by far more often than my fr, which I learned a while ago by far more better than en [8:4 years ;]) to fr when writing.

Sorry to be misunderstood: What I needed to translate, is a statement "in argot", which is: "À mon ami Vincent ce croquin bête" (caption on an Émile Bernard picture -- guess for whom? ;)

I'd like to have look-somewhat-a-like my personal pages on most browsers, the way I'd like to see them, which is, the image directly above the babelboxes and ~same width (when visiting a friend, recently, I found out that "image display size" may considerably differ from the one I see on my FF2 / now:FF3. I'm aware that there are "boxes" which seem to be able to compensate such, like for instance for musicians, artists, ... (variations of {{Infobox}}, I think).

I'd just want to have one picture, some caption and the babelboxes within such box, but I am not able to manage this myself. Please: Do not worry if this is not a simple thing for you, and just forget about, but maybe it is easy for someone more experienced in similar, and that's why I ask you. Émile Bernard

Any images that were published in any form (books, postcards, magazines, anything like that) before 1923 can be tagged with this and used freely. Other than that, only paintings that are actually discussed at length in the text (see this section for a good example of a non-free image used entirely legitimately) should be used. You can see an example of this in Color Field, where Modernist has carefully included only images that are discussed in the text to illustrate specific points. Adding images basically saying "here's another picture he did" or including paintings that are mentioned only in passing is not really acceptable. I doubt that 25 images could be justified, but it's possible. If you like, I can review specific uses/images and offer my opinion on their legitimacy? J Milburn (talk) 18:42, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

Yeah, it's only the U.S., but Wikipedia is hosted in the U.S., and so it counts as public domain from Wikipedia's point of view (the English Wikipedia allows content free in the U.S., as opposed to Commons, where content must be free in the U.S. and the country of origin). Images on Wikipedia must have a copyright tag, and fair use images must also have a fair use rationale. Your image has a fair use rationale, but not a copyright tag, which is required by item 10b at Wikipedia:Non-free content criteria. Please add a copyright tag to the image. Question: How about J Milburn's opinion and my proposal? There are a lot of highly relevant É. Bernard paintings "out there", which will be free (for upload to COM) in 2011, but would be useful to be "gathered" now. Would I be allowed to create some "É. This has been the policy since March 2007; if some images were missed then they will be found in time and tagged. I have marked the image you pointed out as lacking a tag accordingly.

I have replaced the nonfree image with the free one, and the nonfree will be deleted if not legitimately used elsewhere. W., I've been as patient as I can with this, but your behavior here is not acceptable. Please consider this a final warning. Please view the nonfree content guidelines, especially #1. (And by the way, I'm not German, I'm American, and find your insinuation I'm some kind of Nazi or something highly insulting.) Do not again reinsert a nonfree image where we have any free one. The reason I've gone through your image uploads is for no more or less reason than that you stated you were categorically unwilling to do so yourself, and many of them proved to be problematic and to fail NFCC. I realize those were honest mistakes made in good faith at the time, and that it was in no way your intent to upload images inappropriately, but at this point you do know better and have been advised of the rules. Until recently, you were opposing my opinion, in an IMO "somewhat harsh" way. To put things more clear, I tried today to address the comunity on these issues.

Feeling to be Babel=EN~2.321 ;), I am reasonably aware of my shortcomings in this language, therefore I might have missed subtleties in WP:NFCC, but I also do think that you might have missed subtleties in my rationales on artists or sportsmen.

Let's have the community deciding -- I will not interfere any more, besides probably commenting other people's comments, for another few days.

I'd prefer your answer(s) on either Wikipedia:Media_copyright_questions#Interpretation.2C_or_possible_test_cases_concerning_WP:NFCC
(or, whatever the community prefers) Wikipedia_talk:Non-free_content_review#Interpretation.2C_or_possible_test_cases_concerning_WP:NFCC
