Just wanted to leave you a quick comment to compliment those additions you made to the cast list. It looks really good! --Mrtea 19:43, 7 November 2005 (UTC)
Your Opinion Is Needed
[edit]We need your opinion on a couple of things over on the Talk:The Office (US) discussion. Could you come on by? Also, I love the cast photos on The Office (US), but Wikipedia is having a hard time serving them today. It just spins and spins and spins... and times out on me. Do you think we may need to delete them temporarily? Permanently? Thanks for your good work on The Office (US). Regards, --Jeremy Butler 01:15, 8 November 2005 (UTC)
- Wikipedia seems to be doing better today. I say we keep the photos unless it becomes a recurrent problem. --Jeremy Butler 19:22, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
The Office: 6 then 7 then 3 = 16)
[edit]FYI: I heard one of the Office producers say that NBC had actually ordered a full slate of 22, but I haven't seen that confirmed. --Jeremy Butler 19:24, 9 November 2005 (UTC)
Thief!!
[edit]I noticed you stole a bit of my userpage there. I'm really offended by your actions! I'll only forgive you if you offer me some guidance on The Office (US) talk page. Just kidding.. I suppose it's sort of a compliment? I really would appreciate any ideas regarding some external linking jazz that has been getting me frustrated lately though (especially with spammers who "legitimately" sneak their site into the links.)

Barnstar
[edit]what tRNA is that?
[edit]your high resolution picture of tRNA is great. can you tell me what tRNA it is? Was it derived from the coordinates of a crystal structure? please let me know - bio_226t@yahoo.com
thanks and keep up the good work
- Um, I don't know how to contact you, but it is from PDB id, 1ehz. We solved it in my lab. --vossman 00:58, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
thanks Voss
[edit]thanks for posting the pdb id. I have to say that the high resolution picture of phenyl alanyl tRNA is the best high resolution picture of any tRNA available on the net. keep up the good work! Hbhaska 15:50, 10 February 2006 (UTC)
PyMol
[edit]Hi I just saw your PyMol picture you created for aquaporin. You released it under public domain. I am wondering if this agrees with the PyMol license agreement. Of course the software is free and open source. But I believe to remember to have read that if you publish anything made with PyMol you have to cite them properly and I am not sure about the license. Do you have any further information on this? If yes, could you give me the link? Thanks, --Splette 22:09, 2 March 2006 (UTC)
Collagen Graphic
[edit]I saw, you created a picture of a collagen triplehelix molecule, currently published in Wikipedia.
I am writing a literature review in adental subject for educational reasons. May I use a picture of this molecule in this review? It will not be published in a journal but only a small number of copies will be made (around 20).
If so, what reference should I give?
Thank you
Jan Behring
- I appreciate the interest. Feel free to use it with no reference to me. I pulled the molecule from the PDB and making the picture took very little time. You might want to reference the paper of the structure:
- Kramer, R.Z., Bella, J., Mayville, P., Brodsky, B., Berman, H.M. Sequence dependent conformational variations of collagen triple-helical structure. Nat.Struct.Biol. v6 pp.454-457, 1999
- again thanks for the interest, sorry I don't know how to contact you other than using this page. I made the graphic using PyMOL, it's a lot of fun to play with. --vossman 16:46, 21 March 2006 (UTC)

Spider man 3
[edit]Hey vossman, we could use your expertise. What are the probabilities that there is an image in Spiderman's eye in the new poster. Check out the discussion page. There have been some good scans added to the original one you posted. We would love to hear from you. Do you see an image? Post your comments there. Reynoldsrapture 18:58, 26 March 2006 (UTC)

Game of Set page editing
[edit]Hello, my name is Sara and I am an undergraduate student studying mathematics. I am currently working on a research grant over the summer regarding the structure and combinatorics of Set, and saw that you had posted something in the mathematics of Set section. I was curious how much work you have done with the game, and if you were still interested in it. Anything you can tell me would be very much appreciated. Thank you very much for your time.

Last Comic Standing
[edit]Thanks for making season 4 into a separate article. I'm the writer of the episode guide. The page looks great. Regarding one of your user boxes, I also think the world would be a better place with out religion. Oh and is your user name a reference to Rich Voss from the first season of Last Comic Standing? He was really funny. Thefreakshow 13:02, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Episode Summaries
[edit]I will be writing a summary of every episode as they air. Glad you think they're good. Thefreakshow 13:33, 3 July 2006 (UTC)
Episode 8
[edit]Thanks for writing the Last Comic Standing episode 8 summary. My dad was hogging the computer after the episode aired, plus I was watching a really interesting episode of Law and Order:SVU! I think Ty Barnett did the best but probably won't win. Who did you like? Thefreakshow 19:12, 19 July 2006 (UTC)
Last Comic Standing
[edit]Who wrote it then? I like Roz, but she kinda screams all her jokes and Chris has some wierd accent and isn't that funny to me, but hey, I'm a 12 year old! A Ty versus Josh finale would be great. I only noticed problems with Josh's and Chris' delivery in episode 8. They were probaly nervous or forget some of their material. Michele was ok. New York doesn't really smell like urine. I would know, I live there. Thefreakshow 19:27, 19 July 2006 (UTC)

Permission to use tRNA structure in a not-for-profit document?
[edit]Hi,
The structure of the tRNA that you've released is the best I've seen anywhere and better than any one I could hope to come up with.
I was wondering if I could get permission to reproduce a copy of the tRNAPhe structure that you've released to the public domain in the introductory chapter of my dissertation? Of course I would cite you as being the source with something like " structure reproduced with the kind permission of N.R. Voss" and I would quote the reference if there was one.
Have a great day!
--Antorjal 14:34, 13 July 2007 (UTC)
- Thanks for the prompt response. If I use the structure I will definitely cite it and let you know in advance. Have a nice day. Antorjal 17:36, 28 July 2007 (UTC)
Weighted variance
[edit]Hello. The section you added to weighted mean explains why
However, it doesn't explain why this is useful to know. Could you please add that?
I'm not so sure that such a detailed computation belongs in an encyclopaedia, but that's another matter. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 02:07, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
- I've cleaned up the section. Let me know if you like it better. --vossman 17:07, 28 August 2007 (UTC)
Thank you, that's much better. I have one question remaining: why is
the correct generalization of 1 / (N−1) for the unbiased estimate? I don't understand the word tedious in your text. If you can't answer this, it's fine. Oh, and the Python documentation is probably not the best reference, but I guess you also realize that. -- Jitse Niesen (talk) 02:01, 29 August 2007 (UTC)
Fair use rationale for Image XXX
[edit]I uploaded all images under the fair use tag before the "suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use constitutes fair use" was required. So, for all administrators and fair use nazis that would like me to add this explanation, you can look elsewhere. In the beginning, I was trying to make Wikipedia better, but it is no longer worth the effort.

High res picture, for print, of AQP-1 ?
[edit]Dear Mr Voss,
I contact you because I'm a science & environment journalist, and I'm going to publish a short article concerning the aquaporine.
My explanations of the aquaporine, targetting a wide-range audience, are part a global text covering "The waters in the body" and has to be inserted in a digest book about "the curative virtues of the seawater".
For this part of my investigation, I'm looking for "pretty" pictures or scientific images, including aquaporines.
The one you puiblish on wikipedia is particularly astonishing http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/a5/Aquaporin-Sideview.png
Unfortunately, the web version of the img - even at its highest resolution - is far below the quality needed for a printing process, in " splash page". Can you send me a better "hi res" jpeg version of this picture ?
Best regards Maxence Layet maxence@layet.com
JFS date ranges
[edit]I sent a question over to an AIX engineer asking about date ranges of the FS.
Here was the reply:
That's a good question. I checked some PMRs and a recent copy of /usr/include/time.h and it appears that the limiting factor is the time_t value, which is used to store the seconds. We have 2 versions on AIX, one for 64-bit and one for 32-bit kernels. The 32-bit will definitely not go past 2038, but this problem does not exist in the 64-bit version.
This is from the AIX 5.3 Differences Guide:
Chapter 5. System management p246-7 5.19 Date APIs past 2038
The current time API does not allow the representation of times past Tuesday, January 19, 2038 at 03:14:07 UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). UNIX systems represent times as the number of seconds past January 1, 1970 at 00:00:00 UTC (the epoch). The time_t type is a 32-bit signed integer on both 32- and 64-bit machines. On January 19, 2038 03:14:08 UTC it will be more than 2^31 seconds making it impossible for the date to be represented by a time_t type. Applications wishing to represent dates past 2038 cannot rely on the time API because of this limitation.
AIX 5L Version 5.3 has introduced a new 64-bit time API that will allow user programs to use dates past 2038. It will use the time64_t type instead of the time_t type. With the new API the user will be able to call the new time functions to manipulate times up till December 31, 9999. The following functions have been added to Version 5.3: ctime64() ctime64_r() localtime64() localtime64_r() gmtime64() gmtime64_r() asctime64() asctime64_r() difftime64() mktime64() Each function mirrors its respective time32 counterpart. The only difference is time_t has been replaced by a new datatype time64_t which is a signed 64-bit integer.
Note: The new interface will not provide function to set the date past 2038.
AIX 5L Version 5.3 will, most likely, not be supported past 2038.
