Hargeisa
[edit]Hi Ross Hill. Outside of parts of the Somaliland region, the Hargeisa monument is controversial, as it portrays in heroic terms rebels and the Somali authorities as villains. It also shows a soldier figure aiming his gun at civilians. It's therefore not a neutral image for the page per MOS:Offensive images. A more neutral memorial depicting the same period would be the plane memorial [20]. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 19:16, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- Hm, perhaps you should read the guideline you are citing more carefully. That guideline says that images that could be considered vulgar/obscene should be treated in an encyclopedic manner. Including an image of a memorial to the relevant section of an article is completely encyclopedic. The only thing that violates Wikipedia's policy on a neutral point of view is you removing an image from an article, solely because you personally find it offensive. If you would like to add the plane memorial in addition to the images already in the article, I of course support that. As the user Alifazal pointed out to me on internet relay chat, removing the memorial image because of your own personal beliefs is a form of censorship. Ross HillTalk to me! 20:24, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- I did read it carefully. The MOS policy states that "images that can be considered offensive should not be included unless they are treated in an encyclopedic manner." There's no question that that memorial is considered offensive by many outside the region, as it depicts, among other things, "dead bodies, amputees, frightened women and children, and elders whose over their head are pictures of Somali-air forces dropping [bombs] on them continuously" [21]. Hence, my suggestion above to use the more neutral plane memorial from the same period [22]. Thoughts? Middayexpress (talk) 20:47, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- Read WP:NOTCENSORED please. This is a Wikipedia policy, meaning it overrules the WP:MOS guideline. WP:NOTCENSORED states,
... some articles may include images, text or links, which some people may find objectionable, when these materials are relevant to the content. Discussion of potentially objectionable content should not focus on its offensiveness but on whether it is an appropriate image, text or link. Beyond that, "being objectionable" is generally not sufficient grounds for removal or inclusion of content.
- The image Monument in Hargeysa.jpg is relevant to the article, plain and simple. "[The] memorial is considered offensive..." is not a valid arguement, per WP:NOTCENSORED. Ross HillTalk to me! 21:28, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm aware of that WP:ISNOT sub-policy. However, it in turn is trumped by Wikipedia:Offensive material, which is exclusively devoted to material such as this image. Specifically, WP:GRATUITOUS instructs that:
- "Material that could be considered vulgar, obscene or offensive should not be included unless it is treated in an encyclopedic manner. Offensive material should be used only if its omission would cause the article to be less informative, relevant, or accurate, and no equally suitable alternative is available. Especially with respect to images, editors frequently need to choose between alternatives with varying degrees of potential offensiveness[...] Images containing offensive material that is extraneous, unnecessary, irrelevant, or gratuitous are not preferred over non-offensive ones in the name of opposing censorship. Controversial images should follow the principle of 'least astonishment': we should choose images that respect the conventional expectations of readers for a given topic as much as is possible without sacrificing the quality of the article."
- The plane memorial is thus the preferable image here since it is equally suitable, relevant and informative as the war monument, yet at the same time much less likely to offend or astonish the average reader of the Hargeisa city page. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 22:11, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- I'm aware of that WP:ISNOT sub-policy. However, it in turn is trumped by Wikipedia:Offensive material, which is exclusively devoted to material such as this image. Specifically, WP:GRATUITOUS instructs that:
The image is not gratuitously offensive. I expect most people would not find the image offensive at all. Opposing inclusion of an image because you personally find it offensive violates Wikipedia's policy on a neutral point of view, and censorship of information. Actually, the policy you link clearly states, "Wikipedia editors should not remove material solely because it may be offensive, unpleasant, or unsuitable for some readers." The other image you give as an alternative, is not an alternative in the sense WP:PROFA means. It is an image of a different memorial altogether! Since we clearly are at ends when it comes to this issue, I will request a third opinion at the article's talk page. Ross HillTalk to me! 22:32, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- Gratuity is just one of the disqualifying criteria in Wikipedia:Offensive material/WP:PROFA (hence, the "or"). WP:PROFA also pertains to images that "can be considered offensive". I've already provided a link above indicating that the mural is indeed regarded as offensive, and why exactly that is (the male figure with the chopped off arm and leg, for starters). "Alternative" likewise simply means another available image, not necessarily one of the same thing (e.g. cars with vs. without nude female models). Nonetheless, the image is indeed of the exact same monument [23]. The difference is that the plane image focuses on the monument's centerpiece (i.e. the air force aircraft itself), whereas the other image focuses on a portion of the mural below the plane. At any rate, Third Opinion is ok. Regards, Middayexpress (talk) 23:25, 8 February 2014 (UTC)
- Middayexpress, You have been very civil during the length of our interaction, and I would like to thank you for that. It's refreshing having a dispute with someone who is reasonable, and does not resort to sarcasm or personal attacks. So thank you. I welcome you to give your half of the story over at Talk:Hargeisa#Image_dispute. Have a nice night Ross HillTalk to me! 03:23, 9 February 2014 (UTC)

Jimbo specifically says that he trusts us to make changes to his user page. I have absolutely no doubt that the graphic reflects his position on the matter. I previously put a notice on his talk page, asking him if I could do this (no answer yet after about 10 hours). I think he can remove it if he thinks it is not appropriate. In any case, if anybody reverts it, I will not revert it back in. Fair enough? Smallbones(smalltalk) 14:35, 25 February 2014 (UTC)
