Any good with templates?

Hmm, something is definitely wrong with it, but I'm not good enough with templates to figure out what the problem is. It's a very complex template, and it's probably just missing a syntax character of some kind. Did it ever work before? Hmm, I still wouldn't consider adding a template to be a minor edit. I guess I missed the line at Wikipedia:Minor#When_to_mark_an_edit_as_minor, "Fixing layout errors." From here on out, any layout-related edit will be marked as minor. And, in an attempt to even things out, I will mark my adding of templates as minor as well. You may want to start with List of Policies, it is fairly comprehensive. Perhaps also try User:Useight/Helps, there are a lot of policy pages listed under "Important Pages" there. For help memorizing them, though, hmmm, perhaps if you can chat on gmail or Skype we can talk about them in real time which may help you cement them in your head. Problematic user

Here. It's only mainspace contributions are vandalism. It is alleging that it is the reincarnation of at least one previous username, possibly two or more. It's possible that they should be all blocked. Enigma^msg 03:13, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

This is my assessment: he originally created User:Adrian denton and used it for one edit, to his userpage, in 2007. He then forgot his password and created User:Adrian Alej and made 23 edits to his userpage. It appears he forgot that password as well, and created User:Tournament Wrestling, which he used to alter the userpages of both previous accounts. He also made two questionable edits to Vince McMahon. Since the first two accounts are no longer being used, I file this under Wikipedia:Sock#Clean_start_under_a_new_name, perhaps an accidental fresh start, as he no longer remembers previous passwords. Since the first two accounts were used only in userspace, I see no breach of the sockpuppetry policy -- he did not vote stack or otherwise circumvent policy. Due to there being no breach of sockpuppetry policy, I see no reason to block the two now unused accounts, although I suppose justification could be made. Regarding the account he is actually using, User:Tournament Wrestling, he has made two edits to the mainspace, but the second was actually fixing his first. For this fact, I will decline to indef block as a vandalism-only account. Useight (talk) 06:41, 12 March 2009 (UTC)

Well, the edits to Vince McMahon were vandalism. I don't see how he fixed anything. He added factually incorrect information. When a user is preoccupied with userspace and its only edits to the mainspace damage it... I guess we'll wait and see. Also, it seems he is indicating he wants the old userpages deleted. Indeed the edits to Vince McMahon did not fix anything. But I think a vandalism-only block would be a little harsh for one instance of vandalism, especially considering he did not vandalize again after that warning you left. And indeed you are correct regarding what usually happens when editors are preoccupied with userspace. But I can't justify blocking him based on what he has done so far. Well, it depends on what you want/expect from a coach. If you're looking for someone to say "Go comment on 10 AFDs" or other such assignments, I'm not your guy. If you're looking for someone to give you the ten steps to pass an RFA, I'm not your guy. But if you want someone who can show you the ins and outs of Wikipedia; give you pointers and suggestions; and teach you procedure, protocol, and policy, I'm the guy. I call it "editor coaching" rather than "admin coaching" because the point isn't to teach you how to pass an RFA, but rather how to become a knowledgeable and well-rounded Wikipedia. Will this editor coaching result in me nominating you for adminship? Probably not. I do not nominate many people. I guess I'd be more of your karate master rather than your professor. I'd probably start by asking you want part(s) of Wikipedia you like to and/or want to work on and then go from there. I would also give you a very thorough editor review to see where you can improve. The Cup

Well, if each of the top-scoring individuals from the last round perform relatively the same this round, the six pool winners would be Shoemaker's Holiday, Mitchazenia, Theleftorium, Gary King, Durova, and Scorpion0422 (who happen to be the six highest scorers of the first round). That leaves high scorers number seven through twelve to take the six wildcard spots, theoretically. If that happens, the wildcards would be Candlewicke, Matthewedwards, Juliancolton, me, Sasata, and you. However, I will not score as many points this round as I did in the first -- I have a job and a girlfriend now that I didn't have for a vast majority of the first round. But, she'll be gone for the second month of Round 2 visiting family, this will give me more free time in the evenings (we will be chatting via webcams). Question, i'm not sure about this

In the game Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus, there are Anthropomorphic squid enemy guards identified as HP Squidcraft. I was wondering if that should be mentioned in the H.P. Lovecraft article under the headline Lovecraft's influence on culture.

I'm refraining from just adding it because every time I come to a article and try to add info, i run into a bad case of Forum Syndrome, where I get pulled into relentless debates that make the talk page seem more like a web forum.

Okay, I have taken a light look into your work and I will accept the role of your coach. However, I do not "admin coach" in the traditional sense of the term. I will not make assignments for you to complete (i.e., "Go comment on X number of AFDs" or "Review X number of individuals at WP:ER"). What I will do is answer any and all of your questions about policies and procedures regarding any Wikipedia topic (you might want to ask someone else about images, though, because I stay out of that realm). I will also give you advice as to what to do in situations, help you find references, copyedit articles you're working on, help mediate disputes, introduce you to some people, help you find parts of Wikipedia that you may enjoy working on, etc. Also, I can nearly guarantee that I will not nominate you for adminship; this is for two reasons: I nominate an exceedingly few for adminship and I do not want the focus of this coaching to be me teaching you some "tricks" to get a successful RFA. Also, it must be that Autoconfirmation was not necessary to write an article if that was they're only edit and, hahah, i know that kid and he said he amde it rite away. For example, the article was originally created with this edit, but if you click that link you should get something like "Restricted to administrators". I think it has GA potential, but it'll take some work. Some work that will get you some mainspace points along the way. As for me, I may keep working on getting Nintendo 64 to GA; it needs some more reliable references. But that won't happen until May sometime, if at all, when my schedule frees up. The Wack Pack

This article is chock full of BLP violations. It's been tagged for improvement for years and somehow survived an AfD. When I remove defamation, I get reverted. IMO, the article should be gutted and confined to cited material. In fact, individual descriptions should be avoided. Suggest article be made a stub. Can you warn this user for restoring defamation while claiming to "revert vandalism"? I gave an edit summary, too. Enigma^msg 15:57, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

This account has had several strikes before, if you look at the history. Too bad it would've gotten away with it had it not launched a vicious personal attack for me simply for removing the defamation it was adding. Quite upsetting. I got accused of committing vandalism for removing unsourced negative material about living people, and then got personally attacked for removing it. If I had "power", as I was accused of having, that editor would be blocked indefinitely for its lengthy history of ignoring Wikipedia guidelines. :) Enigma^msg 00:41, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Mainspace edits

Okay, so this is sort of a broad question, but how do you maintain a majority of edits to mainspace? Huggle edits mainspace while also editing User talk space. Manual edits takes too long. Let's see, according to this, 64.65% of my edits are to the mainspace. And I do know that my last 17,000+ edits have all been manual. I see that you actually have more User Talk than Article edits, which, while not stellar, isn't the worst thing in the world. If you're looking to do more Article work, the trick is to find a topic in which you are interested, yet has large content gaps or many missing articles, and make and/or complete them. This method provides you with a bunch of various tasks to do on a subject that you are interested in -- this helps prevent burnout. You'll be able to edit much longer when dealing with topics you like. If you're looking to optimize your namespace ratios for RFA, there is no predefined perfect ratio, but I personally usually like to see the most-edited namespace be Article, followed by Wikipedia and User Talk (in either order), with User somewhere beneath that. But there are a lot more important characteristics I like to see in an admin candidate than editing each place the right number of times. See User:Useight/RFA Standards for further information. Hi. I am indeed working on it, but it has been slow going. I'm about halfway through. I can only work on it when there is nobody else in the house to avoid background sounds, but I'm hoping to have some time this week to churn through most of the rest. My method has been pretty slow -- I record one sentence at a time and listen to it afterwards to ensure there is no slurring, choppiness, background sounds, etc. Then I will splice all of them together with properly-sized pauses in between sentences. In need of your mentorship

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning WP:WPOOK, which I've been coordinating. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia.

The goals of the WikiProject are:

1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
2. Complete the existing outlines
3. Create an outline for every subject that is exensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

I was hoping you could comment on how to achieve the goals above.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. So how do I do it? Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your help.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Can you recommend anyone in particular who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this? Or ways to reach groups of editors? Or ways to reach all editors? I welcome any and all advice you might have.

I know I've asked you before, and this is hopefully going to be the last time. Please mark edits like this as minor. It's a huge difference in points. 100 minors get one point in the cup, 10 regular edits get one point. It's really not fair to other contestants, so I really need you to mark your edits as minor when they are something simple like fixing a number or adding a template, etc. Thanks!

Typically when I fix the dates, it looks more like this, I just did that one like that for conformity's sake. Also, adding/removing templates should not be marked as minor, see Help:Minor_edit#When_not_to_mark_an_edit_as_minor. Also, I have no intention of competing after this round. I will either be withdrawing on June 19th or July 28th. If come the end this round, I'm in the top 8, consider this my formal withdrawal from the Cup before the round end in order to permit some other competitor into the next round. My on-wiki activity will drop drastically on the 19th of this month because my girlfriend will be back and town and she will be priority one. The WikiCup has been some external motivation for me to complete this as soon as possible. So, whether I'd be moving on to the "Elite Eight" or not, please withdraw me from the Cup immediately before this round ends. Useight (talk) 21:30, 2 June 2009 (UTC)

No, not yet. I wouldn't want to withdraw at this point, then I would have just deprived Bedford from competing this round for no reason. I'd rather withdraw just before the end of this round in order to permit someone to take my spot if I should qualify for the next round. For now, I like having the external motivation for me to get my projects done sooner rather than later. But I expect that after June 18th, my activity will fall from ~100 edits to ~30 daily. I'll just have much less free time for at least awhile after my girlfriend returns. Don't worry; I'm not "threatening to withdraw" because of your comment above or whatever, I'm not that kind of person. I just won't have time and I figure I'll have most of my work done by the end of this round anyway, so it'd be better to let someone else go further in the Cup. As soon as I finish helping User:Sasata with his project, my energy will be going to getting Nintendo 64 to GA, which I really want to get done while I have the WikiCup to spur me along. Someday I'll fall into the ranks of the retired Wikipedians, but I'm enjoying this hobby too much to give retirement any serious thought at the moment. Plus I still have a bunch of stuff I want to accomplish. Over the past few weeks I haven't been able to edit much; I've been extraordinarily busy, but I still check my watchlist consistently, so I'm still around. I currently have 54,000 edits, and based on my current level of enjoyment and the things I still want to accomplish, I fully expect to continue editing past the 75,000 mark.
