GOCE December 2019 Newsletter

[edit]
Guild of Copy Editors December 2019 Newsletter

Hello and welcome to the December 2019 GOCE newsletter, an update of Guild happenings since the September edition. Our Annual Report should be ready in late January.

Election time: Nominations for the election of a new tranche of Guild coordinators to serve for the first half of 2020 will be open from 1 to 15 December. Voting will then take place and the election will close on 31 December at 23:59 UTC. Positions for Guild coordinators, who perform the important behind-the-scenes tasks that keep our project running smoothly, are open to all Wikipedians in good standing. We welcome self-nominations so please consider nominating yourself if you've ever thought about helping out; it's your Guild and it doesn't run itself!

September Drive: Of the thirty-two editors who signed up, twenty-three editors copy edited at least one article; they completed 39 requests and removed 138 articles from the backlog, bringing the backlog to a low of 519 articles.

October Blitz: This event ran from 13 to 19 October, with themes of science, technology and transport articles tagged for copy edit, and Requests. Sixteen editors helped remove 29 articles from the backlog and completed 23 requests.

November Drive: Of the twenty-eight editors who signed up for this event, twenty editors completed at least one copy edit; they completed 29 requests and removed 133 articles from the backlog.

Our December Blitz will run from 15 to 21 December. Sign up now!

Progress report: From September to November 2019, GOCE copy editors processed 154 requests. Over the same period, the backlog of articles tagged for copy editing was reduced by 41% to an all-time low of 479 articles.

Request archiving: The archiving of completed requests has now been automated. Thanks to Zhuyifei1999 and Bobbychan193, YiFeiBot is now archiving the Requests page. Archiving occurs around 24 hours after a user's signature and one of the templates {{Done}}, {{Withdrawn}} or {{Declined}} are placed below the request. The bot uses the Guild's standard "purpose codes" to determine the way it should archive each request so it's important to use the correct codes and templates.

Thank you all again for your participation; we wouldn't be able to achieve what we have without you! Cheers from your GOCE coordinators; Reidgreg, Baffle gab1978, Miniapolis, Tdslk and Twofingered Typist.

Requesting a little help

[edit]

Hi there, hope you are well. Ethnic cleansing in Chechnya needs clean up/copyedit, but I am reluctant to put on the requests page as it really doesn't need a copyedit. So, I was asking if you could go over the article (not thoroughly) and try and fix a few things. I have already started, but it's a bulky article and I was looking for some help. As said, it doesn't need a full copyedit, just a few fixes here and there. Willbb234Talk (please {{ping}} me in replies) 21:23, 6 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Replied on your Talk Page. 12/6

Thank you

[edit]

Just as a heads up, I really appreciate all the copy-editing you have done for a lot of the articles I have worked on. It really makes any of my chicken-scratch writing into readable content. :) Andrzejbanas (talk) 19:41, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, you're very welcome! Happy to help. Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:43, 11 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

WMAQ-TV copy edit request

[edit]

Could you copy edit the article WMAQ-TV? I started out by removing duplicate links. Still overly long; lots of redundant info, trivia and fancruft; much of which added by a user (Ellinewilliams231) with conflict-of-interest issues who won't respond to any of my posts on his/her talk page. Mvcg66b3r (talk) 18:37, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Mvcg66b3r: I hardly know where to start—almost 10,000 words! I've got several other things on the go, but I'll try to have a thorough look at it over the next few weeks. Twofingered Typist (talk) 22:21, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Twofingered Typist, And what about Elline? Mvcg66b3r (talk) 22:29, 13 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, user Mvcg66b3r reverted my copy edits to eight television articles last month, and has not been forthcoming in discussing them. Also, my copy edit of Shashaa Tirupati was recently reverted by a single-purpose account (thus the maintenance tag reappeared). I've opened a discussion on that article's talk page. – Reidgreg (talk) 20:47, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Reidgreg: Thanks for the heads up. I've run into WP:OWN with this user before, so I'll proceed with caution. As for Shashaa Tirupati I forgot to look at the article's history/Talk Page so missed the reverts. Looks like this user has been doing same since 2017. I've put the c/e tag back and abandoned the edit. I think they should be blocked if they don't respond. We don't have time for this nonsense. Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:03, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I once took a copy edit revert as far as ANI/edit warring, which did result in a block after a couple months of patience on my part. Will hope for optimism in these cases. Maybe I should remove the copy edit tags while they're under discussion. – Reidgreg (talk) 21:13, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Reidgreg: Good Idea. I added a note on the Talk Page as a reminder to reinstate the tag once this is settled.Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:18, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks

[edit]

Thanks as usual for copyediting such a big article. It sure must be tiring. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 16:36, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Tintor2: You're welcome. I don't find it tiring editing Video Game related articles, but it is time consuming as I have no first-hand knowledge about the subject. I often have to check the citations to be certain I understand the text. Twofingered Typist (talk) 21:18, 9 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks to helpful users from Reddit I managed to expand more this section of Jin's article. If possible, could you give it a look? I don't know if it can be rearranged in a better way especially the first and last paragraphs since both mention his design while the others talk more about his characterization. Cheers.Tintor2 (talk) 23:18, 17 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the quick revision. Now it looks more well organized.Tintor2 (talk) 17:30, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

A small request

[edit]

Hello, Twofigered Typist...I am presently working with this article, List of highest individual scores in ODIs. Currently a FLC. Can you please go through the prose (its very short, it will not take time), Is there any "false title" in the prose?? Do you find any?? I didn't find any. I am asking as your much experienced in copyedit, one of the reviewer opposing for "false tile" and I don't see any wikipedia policy for that also. Please let me know if you find any false title. Dey subrata (talk) 16:49, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Dey subrata: I've given the article a quick copy edit as requested. I believe the "false title" the reviewer was referring to was "New Zealander Martin Guptill". I have now changed it to "New Zealand's Martin Guptill" since he was playing for New Zealand at the time. Correcting the original wording to read "The New Zealander Martin Guptill" in its present context would sound awkward to most readers. Why the reviewer wouldn't simply point this pout to you or correct it themselves is beyond me!! Aren't we all here for the same purpose to improve WP? Regards Twofingered Typist (talk) 19:50, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea, my point was that only, we all are trying to make things better and correct and right, same purpose. Thats why someone create another one review, some one ask to copyright only to one goal. If you think something is wrong then say it. I have asked twice which thing was wrong. There was no direct response, and opposing it by saying "poor prose and far from professional level" is something egoistic in nature. I never said I am correct. I don't know some people think very different way, you know. May be the director of the FLC will support my work for sure as the prose is not a poor one for sure and saying "far from professional level" is harsh to me. I really don't know mate. TFA views

[edit]

Hi Twofingered Typist.

I thought that these, from articles which you have copy edited and which were TFAs in November, might interest you.

140,000

55,000

100,000

45,000

The work you do gets a lot of views. 2005 ACC Championship Game is on the main page right now, and is no doubt being read by dozens or hundreds of people as I type.

Gog the Mild (talk) 20:03, 3 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Gog the Mild: These page views are remarkable, aren't they? Happy to help. Thanks for sharing. Cheers Twofingered Typist (talk) 12:40, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Very true. Yesterday. Gog the Mild (talk) 12:55, 4 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. I note that you have made edits to the lead of Interstate 696. Does that mean that I can move on to the next one? Or should I look at the rest of it? Cheers. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:56, 5 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gog the Mild: Sorry, got called away. Yes, I'm on it. Noted on December's Talk Page.
You Only Move Twice got 62,000 views over 4 days! Interstate 696 29,000 over 2. Gog the Mild (talk) 00:15, 18 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
My Gascon campaign of 1345 has had 100,000+ views over two days and counting. You could not find a more obscure military campaign. It avoided Wikipedia's attention entirely until I created it a year ago. What is wrong with people? They need to get out more. Gog the Mild (talk) 20:50, 19 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Gog the Mild:

Peace Dove

[edit]
Peace is a state of balance and understanding in yourself and between others, where respect is gained by the acceptance of differences, tolerance persists, conflicts are resolved through dialog, peoples rights are respected and their voices are heard, and everyone is at their highest point of serenity without social tension. Happy Holidays to you and yours. ―Buster7  13:55, 24 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
