- All articles on non-parkway reference routes in New York and on quadrant routes in Pennsylvania do the same thing, so you'll want to bring this issue up in a location where you can get wider feedback. SC Infobox question
Hey TMF, I have an infobox question for you. I added an infobox road to the highway article SC 11. In the infobox there is starting and ending terminus. For this highway, it starts at a SC highway. I used the example from Wikipedia:WikiProject U.S. Roads/South Carolina. In this example it started with a US highway. The code is this "subst:Infobox U.S. Route/quick|76|Columbia|South Carolina" How do I change this to reflect a SC route instead of a US route? Thanks Rocketmaniac (talk) 15:10, 21 December 2007 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Maine_Turnpike_logo.gif

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.
Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Interstate 77 Control cities
Can you watch I-77 for a bit? This guy keeps adding Ripley, West Virginia as a control city just because it's on some signs. It's not even a major city (pop=>4000)! Hi! A quick question.
I recently edited West Virginia Route 5, adding a note about a part which was abandoned in the 1970's. I noticed that you removed a self reference to the Unused Highways in West Virginia page which described and provided a picture of the old roadway.
I think that the reference is important, as it deals with the history of the route. It also might be beneficial to the user because the old route is still open to visitation by pedestrian traffic.
Being somewhat new at Wikipedia, however, I don't know the best way to reference this from within the current page for WV 5. First, is there a reason why this might be considered inappropriate for this page, and if not, is there a way I could direct readers to this information, so that they may learn a little of the history of the road?

- I think you answered your own question with your latest edit to the page. =) The reason I removed the link initially is that it was presented as an external reference (a self-reference essentially) instead of a normal interarticle wikilink. The AL2TB / Artisol2345 SSP case
TMF, it looks like AL2TB is going nuts trying to cover up any info on the results of the case. So far, he's:
- Removed the confirmed sock template from his userpage; DIFF
- Removed Rschen's comments from the closing clerk's talkpage; DIFF (Did this under an IP)

KY Road Articles
Hello, I notice that in the past you've done quite a bit of editing on State Highway articles that I originate.
However, I noticed that on your latest edits to the new entries for KY 101 and KY 259, you've made the comment that "much more work needs to be done". I was curious as to what you meant by this.

Some SC highways in table, other not
Hello TMF, I have a quick question for you. In this list of SC highways article, state roads 1 to 50 are in a table and the higher ones are just listed. Is there a reason for the separation? Or is just that someone hasn't gotten around to added the higher ones to the table? I asked this question several weeks ago in the discussion page, but no one has answered me there. Collaboration on NY 30A
Thank you for your recent cleanup/update to the history section (together with NY 30). As you're probably aware, I grew up by that highway and that was my first edit to Wikipedia; it's my aim to get it to GA status. It needs at least one photo which I will get in the spring, and I would hope to be able to create a map on my own (if you know how - or if it's better left to those more capable). I also hope to research the archives of the Gloversville Leader-Herald (which will require a trip to that city's library) and at the very least, interview my parents who grew up on opposite sides of the Arterial when it was being built. All the PA, NY and OH int colors

Question about article grading scale
Obviously whoever grades articles has a checklist, but why is NY 45 listed as start and NY 306 listed at GA. They seem to be pretty much identical articles as far as description, history, intersection table, pictures, map and sources. I've made significant addition to the parkway's history and future, so I was wondering if you could re-grade the article whenever you have some time. It's at start right now. I made some upgrades to NY 94 as well, but to a lesser extent.
Also, if you guys need someone to grade articles or simply have the power to upgrade a grade after working on an article I'm more than willing to help. - Yeah, excluding WP:GA and higher, anyone can assess or reassess an article. Here's how I look at the levels: a B-Class article is one that covers the majority of the aspects of the topic, a stub is, well, a stub, and a start is somewhere in the middle. For the purposes of roads, a B-Class article is one that describes the routing, giving note to any peculiarities or points of interest on it (route description), has history on how it came to be, whether it be history on the road's construction, designation, or both (history), and a complete breakdown of what the road intersects, preferably with the mileage (referenced) between intersections (major intersections). A start-class is usually missing one of the elements, and a stub is typically missing two or more. WP:USRD/A more or less goes along with my personal viewpoint on how the levels work and also contains other information, such as on the importance scale.
- If you want a second opinion on an assessment, you can either add "|reassess=yes" to the project banner on that article or join #wikipedia-en-roads and type in "reassessment bell", where someone will take a look at your article. Regards, TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 20:45, 22 February 2008 (UTC)

- Can't really take to the bank John Maine is going to win 15 again. But Santana improves that staff 150%. I think Pedro will be solid for 20-25 starts, we know he'll def miss sometime. NY 25D Realignment

- I don't see how that gives a source for the cite needed tag. The tag is really for the second half of the sentence it's applied to (where it describes NY 25D being moved onto the expressway as it was built) rather than the first half, which is pretty much verified by looking at modern maps of the expressway service roads (which, as you know, carry the Harding, Nassau, and Power House names). A late 1950s map showing part of 25D still on its at-grade alignment and part on the LIE would be the best source for the sentence. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:04, 4 March 2008 (UTC)

- Funny, I thought a close-up view, of these segments, and the comparison to the L.I.E. nearby would be convincing enough. Have you seen these parts of the L.I.E., Nassau Boulevard, and Power House Boulevard? Nassau Boulevard may've been part of NY 25D, but when the L.I.E was realigned the only connection to it in Queens was on the westbound service road west of Little Neck Parkway. Compare this to Lakeville Road in Lake Success, and you'll find that Nassau Bouleavard is a divided highway between the westbound service road and Lakeville. Lists of minor routes
Sorry I didn't get a chance to respond on WT:USRD before our tangent got buried. I was only around sparingly the past couple of days and, of course, conversation moves much too quickly for me to be able to keep up properly.
You're absolutely right that I hadn't read the talk page on the New York article. But reading that didn't tell me anything I didn't already know from IRC discussions with you. I'm still not sure I see the point of eliminating cheap B's is. A B is a B, regardless of how it came about. It's certainly true that some articles will never reach FA-class, and it's certainly possible that these articles will never even reach GA-class. But that's not a reason for them not to exist at all. I don't know, I just don't see the point. Like NE2 said, "I never really liked the idea of merging unrelated routes into a larger list; it's essentially taking a number of articles and concatenating them for no good reason. It's not really much of a merge, since you just copy the text and stick it in; usually a merge eliminates some overlap between the two articles (such as a named freeway with the route it carries)." What exactly is the point of a merge that doesn't actually eliminate any overlap?
Also, as you yourself said, "There really isn't any title that would work that couldn't be construed as OR in someone's eyes..." Well, if it's OR no matter how you present it, then maybe they just weren't meant to be grouped that way.
Now, mind you, I'm not trying to start anything here (god no)-- it's not really OR in my eyes. I'm just saying that you can do things your way, and I'll do things mine, cheap B's and all. -- Kéiryn talk 15:08, 10 March 2008 (UTC)

- You're talking right now. :P I don't mind NY 431 getting pulled back out at all since you dug up some serious history on it. As for CR 560, I'm entirely indifferent. I did look at the former state route list; it needs work. For starters, the NY 338 alignments are flipped - the original alignment was the one around Schuylerville. The routes with main links shouldn't have the browse rows on the bottom of the mini-infoboxes, since someone clicking on, say, NY 47 from the browse on NY 48 will be taken to the article on NY 47, not to that list. There's also tone issues in areas ("The route was put out of its misery", "The route was killed off").
- As for IRC (which is what I think you were implying above), I have no desire to rejoin the channel at the moment. By staying away from IRC, I'm able to reconnect to how Wikipedia works for those who don't discuss it 24/7 - and for me, reconnecting to that feeling helps to keep editing fresh. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 21:39, 11 March 2008 (UTC)

- Well, NY 431 is eight miles long - not exactly minor. My main concern about it was a potential lack of history, but as I said above, that's been resolved. Ideally, the list of minor routes should be restricted to those around or under three miles - but I'm not going to make heavy efforts to make that a hard-and-fast rule. Routes like NY 171 and NY 309 don't make efforts to impose a restriction any easier - both are over five miles long but (IMO) neither are worthy of a full article, with NY 171 being totally isolated from the state highway system and NY 309 being a spur to nowhere. --TMF Let's Go Mets - Stats 00:12, 12 March 2008 (UTC)

WT:USRD Archives
Just so you know, Archive 12 wasn't "moved" per se. I moved the scope discussion to its own specially named archive first , and then created the numerical redirect afterwards just so that it would show up on the archive box. I intended the bot to go to #13 next so that on the off chance someone was browsing the archives in numerical order, they'd still hit all the threads in chronological order.
I'm not sure which way is better -- yours has the advantage (?) of making the scope discussion more prominent -- I'm mainly just writing this so you're aware that my "counter=13" edit wasn't an oversight. -- Kéiryn talk 15:13, 23 March 2008 (UTC)
- If you're going to move it to its own archive then redirect a number there, then why not just keep it at the numerical archive? Moving it to a named archive but using up one of the numbered archives just to make it "show up" doesn't make any sense to me. - The only reason I reverted was because the USRD newsletter went out linking the scope discussion to Archive 12. I'm not sure if that was a typo and it was supposed to be 13 or what...
- I have no problem keeping it at just the numerical title (and I agree that this whole thing is more trouble than it's worth), although at this point it might require admin-assistance over the redirect. - Sounds good. Unfortunately, I haven't done as much as I'd like with the New York WikiProject (most of my time is spent at the state route subproject) but I hope that will change soon. As for Long Island...there's a lot of Unassessed New York articles from the Island, so if the Long Island project wants to go on an assessment drive, that would help both projects. NY 394
You'll see I added a couple of photos to New York State Route 394. I know the one with the lake isn't that great, but it was the best one I managed to get today. I have one more (at right), which I did not upload to the article itself because it was raining pretty hard when I go there. Plus, I now see the NY 394 sign doesn't show up very well at thumbnail size. Well, anyway, the photo is in the system, if you think it's worthy of inclusion anyway. What's the logic in reverting a good faith change that doesn't violate any WP policy just because I didn't fix every error in the article all at once? - If the error is really an error (which I don't believe it is to begin with; naming convention guidelines deal with article names only), then it makes no sense whatsoever to change a select few links than all of them. Maps Question(Quantum GIS)
I want to create maps for South Carolina roads and I am struggling to do it. I have Quantum GIS 0.8.1 and have GIS data for the state boundaries, interstates, and US and State Routes. However, I have been messing around with it for a while and have still failed to figure how to color lines red. I looked through the Map Task Force stuff and still found no good advice. Any advice? - Are you using the NHPN data? If so, what you have to do is split the road data apart into the different classes (Int., US, SH) and create new layers for each class to get the different colors/line widths. For selecting a road red, you then have to make a new layer containing just that road, which enables you to make just that road red. If you join the roads IRC channel, I can give you advice real-time, which may be easier (especially if you need assistance making the new layers).
