Response to Recent Aida (musical) mods

[edit]

The list of high school productions was removed because consensus was recently reached regarding the inclusion of high-school/community theatre (ie non-official performances) - it was agreed that high schools and community theatre groups should not be listed on the Aida page, as they have no official association with the proper musical, other than that they have paid license fees to perform the show.

If my edits accidentally removed official productions, my apologies. Otherwise, the removal of high-school musicals from this article is justified in my opinion :)

Repsonse to Keswick Christian School

[edit]

I have not completed my entry and neither is this written like an advertisement. I do not know how to remove your box, but would you please take it off or tell me how? An encyclopedic entry can contain an opening that is a direct quote as it weaves together a historic narrative account. I am merely citing history here, and if I can get the link to work you'd see where it came from. Having a tough time with the ref. mark for some reason. Thanks. --Wordy1 04:26, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

See my response on your "talk" page Truthanado 01:22, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your response. That box was actually borrowed from another Wikipage. I realized after borrowing it that the infobox tag existed. I'll know better next time.
I did use preview quite a bit but was afraid, after a while, it would get lost, as sometimes browsers crash.
I have one question for you regarding citation, and I wonder if you can help me: Some of the material I would like to include in my entry is from a newspaper article found in a subscription database, Lexis Nexis. Unfortunately, it does not appear for free on the Web. I understand Wikipedia's preference for open access information, but I would like to include this with the proper citation. Do you know if Wikipedia has a citational style for citing a full-text article from a subscription database. I am familiar with the MLA and APA styles found on this page, but don't know about style with Wikipedia.
Any ideas?
I'm not sure what the preferred citation method would be. I have seen several articles just include the reference as plain text (no link), such as "New York Times April 1, 2007". Maybe you can ask the question at the Wikipedia:Help desk. A comment about browsers. Without advocating a specific product, I have had excellent results (and no crashes) using Mozilla Firefox, and I know many others use it; can't say the same about Internet Explorer. Firefox is a free download ... just google it. Truthanado 01:49, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Good to meet a fellow "Firefoxer." Used it for a couple years now. Lots better than all the others. I was having more problems with my server I think than the actual browser. Thanks for the tip on the help desk. --Wordy1 01:56, 6 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thanks for giving me a simple definition of minor, major in Wiki edits. I will conform to policy now that I know it. Until now, my general practice was to save edits regularly, so there is a sequence of smallish steps. I did not think these were considered worthy of "major" status. I will retain the same practice, but default to "major" edit (saves me a key stroke each time). Good for Wiki, good for me. Have a nice day, and thanks heaps for patroling! The tables in that part of the article are talking about the services. Unless work is done south of 63rd Street, there will be no T service, and it is misleading to say that construction has begun on the T. --NE2 23:35, 20 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Break needed

[edit]

Hey, the break is needed. It's not part of a bulleted list; it's separating templates that have glommed together, but shouldn't have. Once I come out with a new version of the UCLA template (the current one is temporary), it probably won't need the break anymore. If you wouldn't mind, could you please "undo" your undo? Thanks. --Dynaflow 18:47, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, I guess I'll do it then. --Dynaflow 19:09, 28 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Do you really consider this page to be blatant advertising? The lottery exists and is surely notable, and I don't see any promotional tone in this stub. DES (talk) 01:43, 29 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes it does need lots of work. There is no "lottery-stub", the closeset seems to be {{gambling-stub}}. You can find all approved stub tags at Wikipedia:WikiProject Stub sorting/Stub types. The WikiProject Systems and the systems engineering article

[edit]

Hello, I have seen that you made some significatant improvement on the INCOSE article. Nice work, thank you. With the WikiProject Systems we started two weeks ago, and are now getting started with a discussion about improving the systems engineering article. I was wondering if you might be interested in giving you opinion on that article on the talk page and maybe you have some ideas how this article could be improved. Ideas from your side will be very welcome. Thank you - Mdd 23:06, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It's my pleasure to review and comment on this article. Thanks for asking. I have added some thoughts to the talk page. Best of luck with the project. I'm going to be pretty busy over the next month or so and I don't know how much Wiki-time I will be spending. I look forward to your work. Truthanado 23:55, 7 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you very much for your contribution to the discussion. They are certainly more then just Some random thoughts. We are going to try to get some more first impressions before we proceed. Any suggestions here are welcome.
Beside that, I made a start with a Category:Systems engineer and some reconstruction in the List of systems engineers. I guess this is counterpart of systems engineering also worth working at. I however don't know how to proceed here? How to select more systems engineers? My question is if you could take a look at that list also and give me some more of your random thoughts? - Mdd 00:06, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You've made a nice start at a list of Systems Engineers. If you go to the INCOSE web site and select About INCOSE / Hall of Leaders, you should be able to add to the list. The INCOSE site should also have other info that might be of use. Truthanado 04:00, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for these directions. I used that information to update the list. - Mdd 10:10, 9 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion about SE has been moved to the new WikiProject Systems Engineering Initiative talkpage. On those pages all discussion around System Engineering are brough together. Things proceed slowly, but we keep working on it. Regards - Mdd 15:18, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on The Trial of Joan of Arc, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because The Trial of Joan of Arc provides no meaningful content or history, and the text is unsalvageably incoherent.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting The Trial of Joan of Arc, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. --Android Mouse Bot 2 23:29, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Baseball statistics

[edit]

Truthanado, I hated to revert your new section, since it was clear that your edit was a good faith attempt to improve the article. My understanding of the WP:NOR policy is that editors can gather verifiable facts from primary sources (such as player statistics), but are not allowed to draw new conclusions from the facts. For example, it would be acceptable to look at the data on league leaders and say something like, "From 1945 to 2006, the average number of home runs hit by the league leaders was xx." Anyone interested in verifying that statement could go to the source and verify it. But I can't look at the source you gave and verify a statement like "hitting 30 home runs is good." If someone disagreed and said, "no, I think hitting 20 home runs qualifies as good," and someone else says, "no, 30 home runs isn't that good--40 is good," the source you gave wouldn't be able to verify one statement rather than another--it provides raw information, but doesn't indicate what the standard is. You looked at it and reached your own conclusion, but that doesn't work for an encyclopedia. To say something is good in Wikipedia, you have to be able to cite verifiable sources that have said it is good.

I think there are some sources that make those kinds of statements, and I'll try to look around to see if I can find some. But, especially for a word that involves judgment, like "good," I think Wikipedia requires that you be able to cite a source that actually says it; it can't just be your personal interpretation of the data. I hope this helps. BRMo 05:23, 3 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for the input and the discussion. I have created a new "Good statistics" section that does not involve original research. For now, it just has some typical Batting statistics in it. I will wait a week or so to see what comments the Wikipedia community has on this. Then, if all is okay, I will expand it to include pitching statistics. Truthanado 19:32, 4 June 2007 (UTC)
I have updated the "Good statistics" section again, simplifying the data so that it shows summaries for the past 7 seasons, not each year in detail, and adding pitching statistics. Truthanado 00:59, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The revised table looks good. Thanks. BRMo 04:10, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Before your edit, the page read "The "Order" column indicates the sequence in which the players first reached number 1." This makes it clear that the numbers in the column indicate the order of those golfers' rise to the number 1 position. Since there was a sentence already dedicated to clarifying the column's meaning, I felt that it did not merit an additional explanation.

Moreover, your additional "clarification" was "For example, Bernard Langer was the first golfer to be ranked number 1, Greg Norman was the third number 1 ranked player." That is not a complete sentence and is written in a colloquial tone. In any case, I appreciate the effort to clarify the meaning, but I feel it is rather clear from the description above. Cheers. Mayor vs Supervisor in Geobox

[edit]

Truthanado, I've posted an answer to your question on both my talk page and at Wikipedia:Requested templates#Mayor vs Supervisor in Geobox Settlement. In short, the left column tags can be changed, see my response for the coding to do so. If you have other questions, please ask. VerruckteDan 15:29, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

At VerruckteDan's request I have made a New York locator map to add to the Geobox Settlement boxes in New York. Hope this helps, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 04:23, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Truthanado, I will create a calibrated NY map today and place it on the Pittsford (town), New York article so you can see how it works. VerruckteDan 18:29, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, I'm gonna delay this action. I noticed on the map that Staten Island is colored as part of NJ and Manhattan is colored as water. I've asked Ruhrfisch to correct this. Once the changes are made, I'll make the edits to Pittsford. VerruckteDan 02:10, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I made the changes and a few others, so Dan can calibrate the map. Sorry for any errors. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 03:03, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Alright, I've added the new map to the Geobox. The calibration made still need some fine tuning, since you're more familiar with the location, let me know if it looks to be correctly located. VerruckteDan 23:26, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
This is great. Thank you very much. The location is fine for Pittsford (town). I also added the map to Pittsford (village) and Victor (town) and they look fine too. Again. many thanks. Truthanado 23:43, 9 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I just made a nav template for Template:Monroe County, New York in line with other NY counties VerruckteDan 00:13, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You're too good ... and very fast. I'm much slower adding the geoboxes, but I will get to all of the towns, villages and CDPs in Monroe County eventually. Thanks for doing this. Truthanado 00:38, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Oh trust me, the Geoboxes take me some time too. I did the whole state of Louisiana....now there was a task. Luckily, Louisiana does not have nearly as many incorporated places as NY.
A quick question, on Brockport, New York you put census-designtaed place as the category parameter, would Village make more sense? VerruckteDan 00:40, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Yep. you're right. I have CDP for towns and villages. That's what I get for copying a geobox and blindly using it. I'll fix the damage I've done. Truthanado 00:45, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No problem, cut and paste makes the Geobox process much faster and mistakes happen sometimes. Hope I don't feel like Big Brother watching you, I've just returned from a mini Wiki-break and am editing in overdrive right now. VerruckteDan 00:47, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I appreciate the help and guidance. Welcome back. Truthanado 00:49, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I hope I'm not coming off as nitpicky, but you started entering municipal names just as the town instead of "Town of ..." Despite the category link right under the name, I think it's better to have the full "Town of..." or "Village of..." as it maintains a consistent standard that is used on any Geobox I've seen, whether in Pennsylvania, Illinois, Louisiana, etc. What are your thoughts on this? Hi. In List of school districts in New York you added a Norther Region entry. Given that you previously restructured the list of k-12 school districts to comply with SED's Higher Education (college) organization (which I still don't understand why it was used), what are you looking to have placed in the Northern Region entry?

Thanks

--Igoldste 11:35, 8 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The simple answer is that the Northern Region should contain school districts in Franklin, Jefferson, Lewis, St. Lawrence counties, as defined in the NYSED Higher Education Planning Regions. However, I am beginning to understand that it is not that simple. A little history, if I may.
When I restructured the list in April 2007, I used the Higher Education Planning Regions (HEPR) because it was the only verifiable breakdown I could find at NYSED (I couldn't find the JMT breakdown you suggested on the article's discussion page). In hindsight, that may have been a mistake, because (as you correctly point out) that breakdown refers to colleges and universities, not elementary and secondary education that school districts deal with. Also, school districts often cover multiple counties, yet the HEPR uses county boundaries.
As further confusion, the List of high schools in New York article is arranged by counties, which doesn't fit well with either the HEPR or JMT grouping. However, if we consider the main user of that article, grouping high schools by county is logical. That's probably how someone would look for a specific high school.
I have done some further research and found info about the Joint Management Team (JMT) areas at NYSED, see [1].
Perhaps it's time to rethink the HEPR breakdown and change it to something more in-line with what the school districts use themselves, the JMT grouping. Let me suggest that we restructure the article to use the JMT BOCES regions you suggested. Either of us could do that, or we could collaborate and share the workload. It would also help the article if we added a reference to the JMT (Joint Management Team), like the one above (or similar). What do you think? I'm all in favor of making Wikipedia better, and it seems to me that restructuring to JMT will do just that.
FYI, the List of BOCES article has been updated to correctly link to all BOCES in New York. That would help identify which school district goes in what region. When we restructure, maybe we should subdivide into BOCES regions too?
See my sandbox for a start of what the restructured article would look like. Comments welcome.

The map that matches the others is there on Commons, just under a slightly different version of the name: Image:Map of New York highlighting Saint Lawrence County.svg. Famous

[edit]

Hi. May I (respectfully) question some elements of your dislike of the word "famous"? In your recent edits to the article Harvey Grammar School you were absolutely correct, in my opinion, to change "the famous William Harvey" to "William Harvey", in accordance with WP:NPOV - however, I think you were a little over-zealous in changing "now famous but until recently secret code breaking centre" to "secret code breaking centre". The original editor was trying to draw a distinction between Bletchley's top-secret recent history, and its sudden emergence as a leading British tourist attraction in the last few years. That contrast, which was well established by the original text, is now lost in your revision. Bletchley just sounds like a secret government installation again! In short, there is nothing wrong with the word "famous" - it is only in certain contexts that it falls foul of WP:NPOV. (No offence intended by this observation - I assume good faith!). If there is something wrong with my contribution why don't you correct it or at least be more specific in your criticisms. I find it hard to believe that someone with a high likelihood of being a a current/former GRS employee can't contribute something positive to an article. I am a subject matter expert in railroad signaling and I don't need this sort of bullcrap when I take a lot of time and effort to revitalize what was effectively a worthless page. All that was there was a bunch of mostly misleading information about signaling, like the kind you find in a children's book, combined with a complete excerpted study from some standards body advocating nationwide rulebook consolidation. You want "sources" fine, I'll dig through my rulebooks and web links and get you some page numbers. C (programming language)

[edit]

You have a point — I shouldn't have tagged it as vandalism, per se, and regretted doing so afterwards. However, the edit is, in my opinion, bad-faith. Consensus has been established against the addition of this link (for starters, it is both of poorer authority than the rest of the links and also contains a number of factual inaccuracies) before and has been tested multiple times (multiple users have reverted the addition of this link with explanation). The user (a range of IP addresses are adding the links — they're almost certainly the one person) is repeatedly spamming this link despite warnings and explanations (both in edit summary on on user talk pages) as to why this isn't being accepted. Also, purely as a matter of politesse, there is a note in the page requesting that new links be discussed on the talk page in an attempt to establish consensus so as to avoid these things. I hope this is, at least, an explanation of why I was so willing to revert it immediately! However, feel free to re-add the link if you feel it belongs and my explanation wasn't good enough. Hi. I just wanted to let you know that I removed the PROD tag that you placed on Template:2007-2008 NBA Western Conference Pacific Division standings. The reason I removed it is that PROD tags shouldn't be used on templates. Use TFD instead. - Rjd0060 06:04, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Normally I would say keep the template (even if it is the only Division with one). However, in this case, the template isn't even being used in 2007-08 NBA season#NBA standings (that is just a table in the article). I would go to WP:TFD with it. - Rjd0060 16:39, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I've left a comment. Thanks for letting me know. Good work on this. - Rjd0060 23:36, 11 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy Deletion

[edit]

WP:CSD#G4 doesn't apply to previously speedily-deleted articles, only to those deleted by WP:AFD. Just a heads-up. Best, shoy (words words) 03:40, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the clarification. It helps me learn. What is the correct tag then? Another speedy-delete for the same reason ... in this case (Danilo Network), use spam/advert? Thanks. Truthanado (talk) 03:44, 18 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

You tagged my brand-new Barry J. Farber article for speedy deletion. What I would actually prefer to do is add a note to the Barry Farber article to the effect that there is another less famous Barry Farber out there who comes up first in Google results, and that it's not the same guy. Adding picture of Barry Farber to his article would also help, but I know even less about that. Thanks.

Dick Van Dyke And The Cockney Controversy

[edit]

As you can probably tell I am inexperienced in the ways of Wikipedia. I checked out your info on one of my idols, and was distressed to find so much space devoted to his "shortcomings" in regard to the cockney accent he used in "Mary Poppins". I just felt that someone as multi-talented as Dick Van Dyke, who I consider a physical comedy genius, shouldn't become a "punching bag" by critics who probably couldn't affect any kind of an accent if their lives depended on it. If this action is contrary to Wikipedia's guidelines, I humbly apologize, and assume that those vile sentences will be re-inserted.User:Staffordin

History of Britain Revealed

[edit]

It will be no particular skin of my nose if this is deleted. However, I am not really sure how to make an encyclopaedic article based on a book which does not look like blatant advertising. There are plenty examples in Wiki to see and they all look like advertising. I was rather hoping someone else would add to it pretty quickly. So, I ask that you keep it there a while longer and give me time to expand it (or learn how to expand a book article without it looking like an ad). However, if you are asking me to complete it and make it encyclopaedic right now, then you will just have to delete it. Not a problem. I liked the book and so I looked it up on wiki and saw there was no entry. So I made one. TheBourtreehillian (talk) 02:06, 21 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Atrium Musicae de Madrid categorization

[edit]

Hi there,

Thank you for tagging my article related to "Atrium Musicae de Madrid". Unfortunately, I do not know if how to add a category to my article and how to add an article to an existing category, I think it should be listed in "Spanish musical groups" and "Early music groups" categories (Also I would like to list in "Early music groups" my two other articles: "Hortus Musicus" and "Pro Anima").

Thank you in advance.

Re:Double Tags

[edit]

Thanks for that

Seems the "damage" isnt major

Its presumably just a redirect that the plugin doesnt handle as default. Will look into that

[2] - Shows there are very few using that template, but i will clear it up

Article deletion

[edit]

Hi again and thank you for adding categories to my previously submitted articles. One more question: how do I delete articles after changing all the links to take to new location? Initially the article was called "Po sledam Briminskih Muzykantof" that was not correct and I have corrected its name according to IMDB item, see http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0251333/ , also I have changed all the links in other articles to take to new location, therefore the old page is no longer required and should be deleted.

Thank you in advance,

Re: Article Deletion

[edit]

Hi again,

Here is what I found regarding article deletion on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Deletion_policy : Deletion of a Wikipedia article removes the current version and all previous versions from view. Unlike page blanking, which can be performed (or reverted) by any user, deletion can be performed only by administrators. Administrators can also view deleted pages and reverse ("undelete") any deletion. So, as long as I am not an administrator, I cannot delete those typo named pages that are not linked from anywhere else! Therefore i have to ask for deletion someone esle, e.g. YOU :-) So please, delete the following pages as they are not linked from anywhere: Po sledam Briminskih Muzykantof and Po sledam bremenskih muzykantov, as the right syntax should be Po sledam bremenskikh muzykantov as given in IMDB.

Regards

Responded on this user's talk: basically, there's no real reason to delete them since they're correctly redirecting to the right place. If they cause a problem, I'll get in and delete them, but I think they're fine. :-) - Philippe | Talk 04:10, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]
