Heya!

In reguards to your question, I'm creating a new prototype search page for when there is an internal error (and wikipedia reccomends you use a search engine

symode09 14:12, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Unfortunately, forms are one of the things that have had to be disabled for security reasons. I think your best option would be to just link to the search engine itself, or have a search box on an external website. Another option is to put it into the page using javascript by requesting that the script is put into MediaWiki:Common.css but this will have accessibility problems. Tra (Talk) 14:29, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

hi, me again. I have been trying to produce a search page. My prototype is available [here] tell me what you think

symode09 14:30, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The prototype looks like it could be really useful!. If you're thinking of implementing this directly into Wikipedia, then I would suggest that since the search box seems to be primarily javascript-based, it probably would be best to add it into the Wikipedia page via javascript. What you would want to do is go to User:Symode09/monobook.js and type in some javascript code that checks to see if an error has come up on the search and if so, put in the search box. That way, you will have this functionality available to you but not to anyone else, which will allow you to make changes without messing up other people's user interfaces. Once you have it working properly, you could then submit the code to somewhere like WP:US where it will allow other people to reference the code and have the search box appear for them when the Wikipedia search breaks. Tra (Talk) 14:45, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

heya,

I can't workout what you meant when you were getting me to work with js and all that, could you help? I can make pages byt had no clue what to do, even after visiting wp:us

symode09 22:42, 3 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

What I mean is that the text in User:Symode09/monobook.js will be loaded as an external javascript file every time you view a page on Wikipedia, but not when someone else views a page on Wikipedia. For example, if you put alert('Hello world'); into there, you would see 'Hello world' pop up every time you load a page. Obviously, you would not want this, as it would be very annoying. However, the code if (wgPageName == "Special:Search") {alert('Hello world'); } would make this message appear only on search pages. What you would want to do is extend the wgPageName check to also look for if there has been an error in the search and instead of alerting the message 'Hello world', add in the search box. Schedule on Village Pump

[edit]

Tra! Thanks for your input on the Village Pump regarding my questions on editing tables. You mentioned that I could enter a section header between rows of the table. How would that look in wiki. I have tried a few unsucessful attempts on my wiki, but I can't get the code to work out. Thank you!!! --Shelton1234 21:53, 5 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Users Signing Up With Your Name.

[edit]

Why have a lot of users in the last couple of days been signing up with the name "Tra?" I look through the automatically-generated list of new users, and I keep seeing something like "New user: Tra: created new username of {{examplename}}." Are these sockpuppets of the same person trying to sign up as you, or are they different people who all simply happened to choose your name? I'm asking because it's odd. Acalamari 23:57, 6 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Take a look at Wikipedia:Request an account. Basically, what's going on is that users who cannot read the captcha when signing up for an account have to use this page, where another user can create the account for them, and e-mail them the password. Those log entries you saw (apart from TraBot (talk · contribs)) are the accounts that I have created for these people through that process. Tra (Talk) 00:07, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, that's what they were. I didn't know; thanks for clearing that up. Acalamari 00:08, 7 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I also got a message about signing up users on my talk page. It's a good thing these users see such behavior which looks wrong, and ask about it. Od Mishehu 12:28, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't think Tra was setting up sockpuppets; I actually thought it was somebody trying to sign up as Tra, and deciding to create other accounts in the process. Tra clearly explained the situation. Acalamari 17:54, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all your help! In particular, I appreciate greatly the summaries and formatting you do for the administrator attention required request. Cheers, Daniel Bryant 09:28, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yeah, thanks for handling those requests! By the way, I was wandering what you thought of the idea of changing the username-is-too-similar-to-existing-account message to point to WP:ACC? I've discussed it with Ral315 (talk · contribs) at Wikipedia talk:Request an account#Usernames too similar to existing accounts but that discussion seems to have been abandoned. Do you think it would be a good idea, and if so, what should the message be changed to? Tra (Talk) 14:18, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

User watchlist

[edit]

Um.. Users in my watchlist made about 10-20 edits yesterday but its not showing up as any edits made during that time. -- Darkest Hour 16:02, 22 March 2007 (UTC)

I know. This tool often goes a bit weird. It works for some people but not for others. All I can suggest is that you make sure that you have your date and time settings set correctly, you are using Internet Explorer, and you will also find you have better results if you live to the west of the Greenwich Meridian. Tra (Talk) 22:26, 23 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Would you like to be an admin?

[edit]

Since you've been helping out so much with WP:ACC, I think I want to nominate you as an admin - so that you can deal better with users who want names similar to existing accounts. I noticed you create several a day - we need an admin there who will do a lot. This will also allow you to deal better with vandalsm - which I see you do some of. Od Mishehu 13:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Since I already offered, I would definitely agree you should be nominated. Majorly (o rly?) 13:51, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I agree with Majorly; you should be nominated. Acalamari 15:27, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for all the support, probably not at the moment though, since I am a bit busy, but I might consider it in about a few weeks time. Tra (Talk) 17:32, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
For what it's worth (and this is pile-on), I do think you could use the tools. Provided you don't become a vandal between now and then, I'd support. alphachimp 07:54, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I doubt Tra will suddenly become a vandal. :) Acalamari 16:53, 1 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Lost Edits

[edit]

Did you know when you deleted WP:ACC, I lost over 100 edits which might be the same for you too and all those that contributed to WP:ACC..--Cometstyles 22:00, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I didn't delete it; it was John Reaves (talk · contribs · blocks · protections · deletions · page moves · rights · RfA). The page is deleted periodically so that users' IP addresses and e-mails are hidden from the page history. Losing edits is a side effect of periodic deletion, but it's necessary to ensure users' privacy. Tra (Talk) 22:09, 27 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Declining WP:ACC requests

[edit]

It's not at all clear what I should do, as an admin, to decline a WP:ACC request. At the moment, the ones that I accept are removed by the bot, and the ones that I'm not sure about or are obvious declines (e.g. existing username requested) just stay there and clog up the lists. Do you have any ideas for what I should do in the situation? --ais523 16:18, 2 May 2007 (UTC)

There's two ways of doing it. Either you could e-mail the requester and tell them about the problem, and remove the request from the page; or, you could say that you have declined it as a comment under the request then remove the request after around 48 hours. I've had an idea of perhaps using {{not done}} for the latter case and perhaps getting a bot to archive requests containing this template. Tra (Talk) 16:49, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it could be done the same way as {{RFPP}}; {{ACC|d}} for a duplicate, {{ACC|s}} for too similar to create, {{ACC|u}} for username vio, {{ACC|t}} for a technically impossible username? I'll code the template if it seems like a good idea. --ais523 17:01, 2 May 2007 (UTC)
Yeah, that sounds good. I think there should be a separate option for accounts that are similar to another account and accounts that are similar to an active account, maybe {{ACC|s}} could code to [image] '''Similar''' to {{useracc|username}} and {{ACC|sa}} could code to [image] '''Too similar to active account''' {{useracc|username}}. Please choose another username. I'll bring this up at Wikipedia talk:Request an account as well. Tra (Talk) 18:02, 2 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Magnolia

[edit]

Hi, I notice you created the Magnolia (color) entry on the Template:Shades_of_white template. It looks wrong to me compared to magnolia paint we get here on the British mainland. What was the source of that RGB? Thanks Sweavo 17:00, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

That was quite a few months ago so it's hard to remember but I think I must have added it based on the the RGB code already in the article at that time. That code was added by the article's original author 195.92.168.168 (talk · contribs · WHOIS) (this was before article creation was restricted to registered users) but since it's a shared IP, it's unlikely you would be able to find out the source from them. If you know the RGB code for the paint you mention, it would probably be better to add that. Tra (Talk) 17:45, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for responding! Googling reveals a schism over whether magnolia paint is yellowy or purple - I guess because you can get magnolias in both colors. For that reason I'm butting out unless I find something convincing!

thanks for the fix

Thanks for the fix to the Freemasonry2 template. So simple... but so beyond us mere mortals.  :>) Blueboar 00:46, 14 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I think it's a great addon. I'd like to tell you I've translated your tool into German and added an alphabetical sorter. Maybe you want to use this little funktion in your script. You only have to change the values in n2d. Regards, --Revolus 11:55, 3 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what you're referring to. What is it that you want to make? Tra (Talk) 23:26, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
An account? (Sorry to interrupt) Acalamari 23:32, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
It could be that... It seems that if you have already made a request then it must have been under a different IP address since I can't see it in your contributions. If this is the case, can you tell me what username were you trying to make so I can see what happened to it? It might also be easier to follow the instructions in the yellow box at Wikipedia:Request an account and make another request. If this isn't what you're asking about, please do say and I'll try to help you. Tra (Talk) 23:55, 10 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Sorry about that but I let that account remain because I believe the person that created the account didn't follow proper procedures since the user who created the account was only a week old. I'm not a big fan of very new users creating accounts because last time it happened, there was a big controversy and the user was blocked for creating account on WP:ACC and using that account to vandalize wikipedia and also was a sock of banned user...Thanks for listening.. Cheers..--Cometstyles 23:33, 13 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

...With your User Watchlist. How do I use it?--  PNiddy  Go!  0 02:14, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In the toolbox on the left hand side of the screen, click on the link for 'User watchlist'. Hopefully, after waiting for the loading message to disappear, you should be presented with the recent contributions of all of the users where you have watched their userpages. If that doesn't appear for you, then it might be that you're in the wrong timezone, using the wrong browser or you might just be unlucky. Sorry I can't offer more help but I've found before that the script doesn't work for everyone. In fact, since I'm using FireFox at the moment, I can't even use it myself! ACC

[edit]

Hey, Tra. Just a quick question about WP:ACC (since you help put there so much :) Can only admins create accounts, or can anyone do this? Thanks, and happy editing, Arky ¡Hablar Conmigo! 16:29, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Normally anyone can create an account, but if the username being created is similar to an existing username (e.g. User:Example would be similar to User:ExamPle) then the software will warn you and only let it be created by an admin. However, if an admin creates the account, they will not be told what username it is similar to, so there may be a possible conflict with an active account that they are unaware of. Therefore, a non-admin needs to attempt to create each of the usernames (and apply the appropriate tags to each request) before an admin attempts each of the usernames. You would probably also want to read through Wikipedia:Request an account/Administrators for the full instructions. Tra (Talk) 22:54, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the help! Cheers, Arky ¡Hablar Conmigo! 22:55, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Congratulations, you are now an administrator

[edit]

I'm happy to inform you that, due to your successful request for adminship, you have now been promoted to an administrator. If you have any questions, feel free to ask me or stop by the administrators' noticeboard. Congrats! Andre (talk) 19:55, 24 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Request User Account

[edit]

Tra, congrats on the admin promotion! Thanks for getting back to me about the user name I requested. I don't have the IP (as my IP is variable) but I do have the account names. I'm looking to start an account at J_Crow or JCrow OR jcrow as this is how I'm generally known on the web. There is an account Jcrow, but it's inactive since its inception some years ago. I'd like to stop using my birth name, and move to my web alias. Can you help? Feel free to reply here or on my talk page. Thanks so much. Joshua Crowgey 07:01, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK, I've found what happened to your request.[1] I'll copy it here with e-mail and IP addresses removed:

{{account request

|username = j_crow OR J_Crow OR jcrow (any one is fine)

|e-mail address =

}} 06:23, 12 July 2007 (UTC)

I have another wikipedia account with over 500 edits. Nonetheless, my account name is under my real name and I'd like this account because it's not my birth name but bears a resemblance to it. There is a jcrow account which was created in dec. 2005 but never used. If you have the time to leave me a message on User_talk:Joshua_Crowgey when you create the account I'd be obliged (I don't check that hotmail account too often.) Thanks so much. WP:LOVE

Note: You could request usurpation of the Jcrow account (capitalization of the first letter is irrelevant), as the user is completely inactive. Or else you can ask to have your account name changed to J_Crow or J_corw. Od Mishehu 09:00, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, what you need to do is go to Changing username and make your request there, since this will mean that your existing contributions will also be moved over to the new account name. Tra (Talk) 12:44, 26 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

About your sidebar translator

[edit]

First and foremost, thank you so much for this script; it really helps make things a lot more manageable when dealing with interwiki links (which I'm doing more and more these days).

I'm if it would be helpful for me to copy the script into my userspaces for my various interwiki accounts. That'd allow for English users to more easily read the sidebar links across multiple projects. I know it'd be useful for me, and maybe for other editors as well. Just thought I'd run the idea by you (partly to see if you think it's a good idea, another is because I'd need your permission before doing that). EVula // talk // // 17:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, that's fine by me, although it would also be possible to use the script in another project by putting
document.write('<script type="text/javascript" src="'
+ '&action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&dontcountme=s"></scr' + 'ipt>');
into each monobook.js, which would allow you to use the same script everywhere instead of having multiple copies. Tra (Talk) 18:42, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Hell, I'd much rather just do that. I didn't know you could pull scripts from off-site, which is the only reason I was going to copy it over everywhere. :) EVula // talk // // 18:56, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
