Sherron Collins

The IP who edited before me said that Collins never actually signed with BC Lietuvos Rytas. He didn't include a source, but I couldn't find any evidence that Collins ever played for the team, so I removed all mentions of it. Collins never played in Puerto Rico, either, although that was already explained in the article. Zagalejo^^^ 04:43, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

Well, the IP suggested that Collins never signed with Lietuvos Rytas to begin with. Maybe it was reported incorrectly. (It wouldn't surprise me.) Did the team themselves ever make an official statement one way or the other? Zagalejo^^^ 04:50, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
This seems like it might help. I do think, if an IP claims that information is incorrect, we should take them seriously and see what we can find out. Information on international basketball signings does get misreported often, so I decided to assume good faith, and at least remove things until we can get the facts sorted out.
While we're on the subject, I think I would probably remove the Puerto Rican team from the infobox, as well. We don't normally list NBA teams unless the player has made an actual appearance for that team. Zagalejo^^^ 05:01, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
The IP has commented here. Zagalejo^^^ 19:34, 1 April 2012 (UTC)
If you want, you can add something like that. Zagalejo^^^ 20:30, 1 April 2012 (UTC)

I believe I had started some tagging for WP:CHICAGO for you some time ago, and I realize that you still show a lot of interest in having it completed. I got a custom code to replace AWB and it has been approved, so I'll be going through Wikipedia:WikiProject Chicago/Bot Category List for you. I'd like it if you dropped by User:Hazard-Bot/Requests and leaf a request so it could be tracked better, but either way, I'll get to it soon. Interest in Wikimedia Midwest concept?

Greetings - in an effort to help nudge a conversation about developing a broader Wikimedia presence in the Midwest, I've posted the beginnings of a Wikimedia Midwest page/proposal. I was wondering if you know anyone, yourself included, who might be interested in organizing or helping shepherd this proposal along? Any thoughts you may have would be most welcome on that page or it's talk page. Thank you! --Varnent (talk) 22:45, 7 April 2012 (UTC)

Hi TonyTheTiger, I've noticed your edits sometimes on the musician's articles and am very impressed with your work. Would you consider looking at Astral Weeks and letting me know what you think as far as how close it might be to being ready to nominate for a GAR? George Streeter

Hi Tony. Well, the Streeterville article is only the tip of the iceberg. I've had a closer look at the George Streeter article. Clearly whoever wrote that has an axe to grind! I'm almost tempted to revert the article back about 3 years! I've been reading through King of the Gold Coast by Wayne Klatt (2011), which seems to be a relatively non-biased account of events and, unusually for accounts on Streeter, cites its sources. The story of the District of Lake Michigan is complex to say the least, and further complicated by lies and embellishment from the protagonists on both sides of the fight. I would definitely like to tackle it at some point, though at the moment I have been trying to work my way back into the equally complex story of the Battle of Fort Dearborn which I hit a brick wall block with a couple of months ago.—Jeremy (talk) 03:35, 17 April 2012 (UTC)

Since you are providing the review of the Mila Kunis article I was wondering if you could provide some clarification on what another editor posted on the page regarding issues with capitilisation. There has been nothing provided on the talk page, even though one editor has asked, and to be honest I don't understand either. There may be some areas where it needs to be corrected, but I don't see it as a significant issue and of course you did not mention anythiing about it in your initial overview. Thanks. Ah, I hadn't seen those templates. They may not be on the articles they're supposed to be for. Anyway, I've updated them. At some point, I hope to go through the whole Olivier-related space and update them because it's woefully underdeveloped. However, because of how little actually exists here and because the Oliviers don't have as clean a database as the ibdb, it could take are very, very long time. Unfortunately, my summer isn't as leisurely as it usually is and I'm not sure if it can all be finished by September. I can't even start until May. Nikkimaria pulled the Kony hook for close paraphrasing. If you're online, head over to the nomination page and see if you can fix the issue before it loses its chance to go up today. Message Nikkimaria, if necessary by e-mail, to recheck it. She's an admin and can reinsert it, but she should re-pass it since she sounded the alarm. Meanwhile, continue checking the article prose against sources to find any "etc." Best advice I have! Yngvadottir (talk) 15:50, 20 April 2012 (UTC)

I dealt with your comments the best I could. The coverage of baseball biographies are dealt much different than football or basketball here on Wiki and with sportswriting in general. Yes Hosmer was a top prospect, but even the coverage of the biggest baseball prospects pales in comparison to basketball and football with only very few exceptions (Bryce Harper). Baseball is a sport that despite if the player was a huge prospect in the Minor Leagues, MLB Draft, high school, college and so forth, they are way more likely to become unsuccessful or an average player once you reached the highest level of the sport than a superstar. For every Ken Griffey Jr., there is three Mark Prior's, Ben McDonald's, or Brien Taylor's. Becoming a superstar is extremely unpredictable with players as well. Fans back then wouldn't be able to predict the success of Mike Piazza, Johan Santana or even Josh Hamilton who weren't top prospects, and in Hamilton's case, was an high prospect but labeled as a bust before becoming a superstar literally out of nowhere. That's why baseball fans don't really care about the players background sadly enough. Even the extremely hyped media coverage of Stephen Strasburg basically came to a standstill after he got injured last season. So if a top prospect just didn't pan out or got injured, baseball fans and the media might say he was a bust, but they wouldn't glorify him neither like what the media did with Ryan Leaf or Sam Bowie and coverage of the player would simply disappear. Once you become a proven star for a couple of years is when the extremely amazing, reliable coverage that a decent NFL quarterback comes. And then unless the player is the star for a big-market team and break all-kind of records (Derek Jeter or Barry Bonds for example), is when the player starts getting the same coverage as someone like Peyton Manning or Dwayne Wade.

Being the "seventh best" first base prospect isn't a "neutrality problem", it's a huge compliment considering that there's about 4500 minor leaguers currently playing and that those baseball sites like Scout.com or Baseball America evaluate more if the player is Major League ready than if the "player is superstar potential" but nowhere near ready for the Majors. And there's no reliable website that list Hosmer in a extremely critical light in my research (at least that isn't behind paywalls). If you see that something needs to be mentioned or explained in further detail I'll take care of it, but baseball players like Hosmer isn't, nor probably would ever get the same attention as basketball or football superstars because baseball is too unpredictable and the sportswriting is adjusted to that. What may be an excellent source in American football is a useless, unreliable source in baseball. Right now the Kansas City media doesn't care about Hosmer poor start so, and I'll admit the way they are reacting about Hosmer makes it more difficult to find the proper independent sources. And usually when someone is playing for a small market team like the Royals the national coverage almost always follows the example of the local coverage. That's local=national is usually the case with basketball also as you probably know.

American sports media sucks in general. There's so much more great and findable coverage of historical baseball figures than football, basketball, or hockey players from the same generation. But the coverage of current baseball players is poor comparing to current stars of those three sports. Just giving you an example of what you are going to work with once you start getting used to writing articles on baseball players. And we do damn need more baseball writers here on Wikipedia. It's only down to a few of us. After you finish with Philip Humber, try working on some Chicago Cubs or Chicago White Sox players like Ernie Banks?

Thanks for the review. Secret account 00:19, 26 April 2012 (UTC)

WikiCup 2012 April newsletter

Round 2 of this year's WikiCup is over, and so we are down to our final 32, in what could be called our quarter-finals. The two highest scorers from each pool, as well as the next 16 highest scorers overall, have entered round 3, while 30 participants have been eliminated. Pool B's Conradh na Gaeilge Grapple X (submissions) remains our top scorer with over 700 points; he continues to gain high numbers of points for his good articles on The X-Files, but also Millennium and other subjects. He has also gained points for a good topic, a featured list, multiple good article reviews and several did you knows. Pool E's Scotland Casliber (submissions) was second, thanks primarily to his biology articles, with Pool H's New York City Muboshgu (submissions) coming in third, with an impressive 46 did you knows, mostly on the subject of baseball. Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both scored over 600 points. Pools E and H proved our most successful, with each seeing 5 members qualify for round 3, while Pools C and D were the least, with each seeing only 3 reach round 3. However, it was Pool G which saw the lowest scoring, with a little under 400 points combined; Pool H, the highest scoring group, saw over triple that score.

65 points was the lowest qualifying score for round 3; significantly higher than the 11 required to enter round 2, and also higher than the 41 required to reach round 3 last year. However, in 2010, 100 points were needed to secure a place in round 3. 16 will progress to round 4. In round 3, 150 points was the 16th highest score, though, statistically, people tend to up their game a little in later rounds. Last year, 76 points secured a place, while in 2010, a massive 250 points were needed. Guessing how many points will be required is not easy. We still have not seen any featured portals or topics this year, but, on the subject of less common content types, a small correction needs to be made to the previous newsletter: File:Wacht am Rhein map (Opaque).svg, our first featured picture, was the work of both Vanuatu Matthewedwards (submissions) and United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), the latter of whom has also gone on to score with File:Map of the Battle of Guam, 1944.svg. Bonus points also continue to roll in; this round, England Ealdgyth (submissions) earned triple points for her good articles on William the Conqueror and the Middle Ages, Casliber and Cwmhiraeth both earned triple points for their work on Western Jackdaw, now a good article, Michigan Dana Boomer (submissions) earned triple points for her work on lettuce and work by Bavaria Stone (submissions) to ready antimony for good article status earned him triple points. United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) managed to expand Vitus Bering far enough for a did you know, which was also worth triple points. All of these highly important topics featured on 50 or more Wikipedias at the start of the year.

An article on the WikiCup in the Wikimedia Blog, "Improving Wikipedia with friendly competition", was posted at the end of April. This may be of interest to those who are signed up to this newsletter, as well as serving as another way to draw attention to our project. Also, we would again like to thank United Kingdom Jarry1250 (submissions) and Bavaria Stone (submissions), for continued help behind the scenes. As ever, if you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send.
