GA nomination of Johann Peter Hebel

Hello! I wanted to make sure that you were aware the the GA review of Johann Peter Hebel was placed "on hold" pending some changes that need to be made. I'm sorry I forgot to notify you about it before. Don't worry, I'm far from a stickler on the 7-day hold rule. Take the time you need. I see you have other GA noms to handle (including Poor Folk, which I was surprised to find is also your nom. Don't worry, take the time you need to do a good job on that one). I'm sure it is frustrating to have several outstanding noms sit for months (I was so sorry to see that you been waiting since June for this one!) and then suddenly they all get reviewed at once. Just let me know if you are still interested in continuing with this one. Sometimes GA monitors complain to me when they see I have an article on hold and there has been no activity on the talk page for more than a week. So, I just want to be sure of where things stand. Happy editing! --Tea with toast (話) 04:00, 30 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi, Great Orange Pumpkin / Tomcat7, I'm beginning the copy-edit you requested to the above article at the GOCE Request page. Please feel free to contact me, or to correct or revert my edits if I'm doing something I shouldn't. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 23:37, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Done - I sub-divided divided the 'Sports career' section, which was rather large. What are "Ehrenpreis" and Goldene Ehrennadel (retirement)? I gather they are some sort of award, but an approximate translation would be useful. :-) Good luck with your next GA nomination. Cheers, Baffle gab1978 (talk) 03:50, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

Prizes for first, second, third and fourth will be awarded, as will prizes for all those who reached the final eight. Every participant who scored in the competition will receive a ribbon of participation. In addition to the prizes based on placement, the following special prizes will be awarded based on high performance in particular areas of content creation. So that the finalists do not have an undue advantage, the prize is awarded to the competitor who scored the highest in any particular field in a single round.

Awards will be handed out in the coming days; please bear with us! This year's competition also saw fantastic contributions in all rounds, from newer Wikipedians contributing their first good or featured articles, right up to highly experienced Wikipedians chasing high scores and contributing to topics outside of their usual comfort zones. It would be impossible to name all of the participants who have achieved things to be proud of, but well done to all of you, and thanks! Wikipedia has certainly benefited from the work of this year's WikiCup participants.

Next year's WikiCup will begin in January. Currently, discussions and polls are open, and all contributions are welcome. You can also sign up for next year's competition. There will be no further newsletters this year, although brief notes may be sent out in December to remind everyone about the upcoming competition. It's been a pleasure to work with you all, and we hope to see you all in January! J Milburn (talkemail) and The ed17 (talkemail) 00:27, 1 November 2012 (UTC)

(Yet another) Harrison GA review?

Hi GOP/Tomcat7. I realise you're probably busy enough as it is, but if you have the time (not to mention the inclination), I've got a few more George Harrison articles up as GANs. "Wah-Wah" is the first in the queue of Harrison song articles and there's also The Concert for Bangladesh (the event, not the album, which you kindly reviewed a while back). I understand if you're otherwise detained – just thought I'd get in touch anyway. (And I've just noticed you've now done 154 reviews ... wow, what a contribution.) Best, JG66 (talk) 02:49, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Sure, will probably review in the next week. Regards.--Tomcat (7) 12:54, 2 November 2012 (UTC)

Cheer up: Halloween is coming!

Cheer up!

Sorry you're feeling glum. It is challenging to forge a consensus, sometimes, as everyone has their own opinions. But sometimes it is very satisfying, and people learn to respect each other, and even learn a lot from each other. I am currently enjoying the editorial process on such articles as Joseph Grimaldi, which is finishing a peer review. After more than 6 years, I still feel happy to be helping to improve this free encyclopedia. Meanwhile, if you have any time to spare, I look forward to your further comments on the GA review for Jackie Evancho. All the best! -- Ssilvers (talk) 17:27, 16 October 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your review and excellent comments. Will you put the little green X on the article, or does it happen automatically? All the best, and Happy Editing! -- Ssilvers (talk) 20:58, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Dostoyevsky article

Hello, Tomcat7,

Although the article hasn't got any templates regarding subediting, I'll lay my hands on it. Sadly, can't contribute with any information as I'm nothing but a fan of his work –but at least they won't pick you up on a piss-poor prose. Regards, --Cocolacoste (talk) 03:47, 21 October 2012 (UTC)

Sorry to pester you, but I'm having trouble with this ambiguous sentence "Officially, Dostoyevsky's father died of an apoplectic stroke, but a peasant, Pavel Khotiaintsev, claimed he was killed by other peasants; however, the truth of Khotiaintsev's claims could not be verified because if they were true, he would inherit more land". Who(m) does the last "he" refer to? Dostoyevsky (as I reckon) or Pavel? The sentence needs rewording, though it'd be in different ways according to the meaning.
I'd be glad if you could help.
Btw, I've read somewhere else that the story was made up by a landord, not a peasant. Is this so?
Cheers, --Cocolacoste (talk) 10:01, 22 October 2012 (UTC)
Hi again, TomCat
I saw the changes you've made to D. article just now. There are some problems with the sentence structure:
  • "French-educating boarding school" isn't clear. From what I've read in The seeds... (p.54) the lads were sent to a day school – not boarding – founded by a certain Souchard (of French origin or French himself, I gather?) because their dad wanted them to learn the "prestigious" Romance lang. As for the p. 9 from A Writer's Life on Google books, I can access only to a teensy-weensy bit in which there's nothing about said school. Is The New Testament Selected for Children written in French? They had to learn it by heart at school? If so, I'd write summat like "They were sent to a day school founded by a French lang. tutor blah, blah"
  • "Mikhail was refused admission on account of his poor health and the school's better studying positions, and was later sent to the Academy in Reval, Estonia. The two brothers had to break up". Again, "studying positions" isn't a collocation in Eng, the comma's misplaced – they’re not independent clauses – and, IMO, the whole thing reads better, less abrupt, with the sentence connector "so".
Linguistic-y things aside, Frank just mentions that Mikhail was refused because of his health, not that he failed his entrance exams (p. 74). And so does Kjetsia on p. 23 (can't get into pp. 35-67 on Google bloody books) What exactly d'you wanna say? That the academy in Reval was less renowned or prestigious?
<Useless but deceitful praises>I'm hugely impressed by the toil you've put into that article and really want to help you. Let me know what you reckon on all I said. And please feel free to pull me on if I've altered the meaning of a paragraph or section.</>
Looking forward to a reply, at least one saying where I can shove all these comments up.
Best,--Cocolacoste (talk) 18:50, 2 November 2012 (UTC)
With all due respect, you are talking to me like I was a pupil. Phrases as "What exactly d'you wanna say?" are a good example of what I reject. --Tomcat (7) 11:09, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

No, TomCat, I'm not the patronising type. I asked what you wanted to say simply because that info doesn't appear in the books by F. and K. and I was confused – especially after reading in one of them, can't remember which one, that the academy M. went to was in fact less prestigious. Now, if you'd rather I stopped copy-editing the article, just let me know and I'll tell the people at GOCE I'm not involved in the project any more.

My comments on your work, if useless, were honest. Best,--Cocolacoste (talk) 23:23, 4 November 2012 (UTC)

When I first read above I thought the "useless and deceitful" were part of the original post but seems I'm wrong [1], hence the advice per WP:TPO: Never edit or move someone's comment to change its meaning, even on your own talk page. Striking text constitutes a change in meaning, and should only be done by the user who wrote it or someone acting at their explicit request.. Truthkeeper (talk) 21:32, 3 November 2012 (UTC)

Hello! Your submission of Lego-Brücke at the Did You Know nominations page has been reviewed, and some issues with it may need to be clarified. Please review the comment(s) underneath your nomination's entry and respond there as soon as possible. Thank you for contributing to Did You Know! dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 14:47, 22 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi Tomcat, I've added a review of Klauser Schuhe onto the nomination page for Lego-Brücke. Sorry for the wait! There are a couple of concerns I've identified, including the need for a copy edit and a rewrite of the first paragraph of the article. Once these are done, the article should be good to go onto the main page. --dragfyre_ʞןɐʇc 14:58, 5 November 2012 (UTC)

We noticed though that when you edited Euro gold and silver commemorative coins (Belgium), you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page King Albert II (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). As I just posted on my talk page, I just came back from two days off and the expert award was a great surprise, thank you! My main goal in editing Wikipedia is to build content that will last. RE:November 2012

Hi. I'm sorry, but what was the point of leaving this message on my talk page? I never claimed that I own an article, and have no I idea why you think I do. Hehe. --Khanassassin 14:14, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Your behaviour suggests the complete opposite of what you wrote here. Please read the ANI entry, where you falsely claimed that one user was vandalizing a page and which was redundant and childish, for more information. The point was to inform you, and of course you never claimed that you own an article. Regards.--Tomcat (7) 14:35, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
The claim that I made about the user being a vandal was reasnoable, as even reliable sources said that she wasn't the Nico voice actress. However, Cecil confirmed that she is, so I added the information that she added back. Sorry, but your message was useless. --Khanassassin 14:59, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
It was no way reasonable. What she did was adding a piece of information that showed no signs of vandalism, yet you are claiming the opposite. Your comment is self-contradictory by the way. Regards.--Tomcat (7) 15:05, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
Once, I saw a user edit the Charles Cecil article, and added a sentense which says: " Elisa Carrio said Charles is looking forward to play asylum from senscape, forged by Agustín Cordes." It might not seem like vandalism, but it is. It says thhat an older Argentinian president said that Charles was looking forward to play some game by some other guy. It's not true, highly unlikely, and doesn't have a source. Just like what this user did. Added something about an actress and her daughter playing the characters, and her brother directing. Now, there is not a credit of this woman in the Credits, IMDb and fans of the series and reliable sources say it's another actress, and this makes it highly unlikely and most likely not true. Now do you understand? --Khanassassin 17:55, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
I should not understand anything, you must understand your attitude towards new users. Regards.--Tomcat (7) 19:18, 23 November 2012 (UTC)
This is the only time I ever "accused" a new user "badly", and it was an understandable mistake. Anyway, we should just stop this, it'll do no good. --Khanassassin 19:48, 23 November 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

For your barnstar and for being willing to help out with the Whorf GA review if anyone ever decides to review it. The outcome of the previous review may be discouraging some people from taking up the review - I was very saddened by the review, but I didn't consider the reviewers critique to be fair, and I basically think he failed it on WP:IDONTLIKEIT. If you wish perhaps you could review it instead? I am, as you see, not quite retired.·ʍaunus·snunɐw· 18:21, 21 November 2012 (UTC)

Wah-Wah (song) GAR

Hi Tomcat7. Thank you for taking the time to review this one. I've replied to your comments on the talk page and, as you'll see, I'd be grateful for any specifics you might be able to add regarding that first point you raised – about the relevance of the background information I put in the article. I've tried to put a case (so to speak) for both that long Background section and the description of Robert Rodriguez; would you be able to reply to those comments perhaps, when you have a moment? Obviously I'm hoping that my arguments might affect your suggestions ... but hey, quite possibly not(!). Thanks again. Regards, JG66 (talk) 04:12, 18 November 2012 (UTC)

Hi again. Just to let you know, I've replied to your recent replies. Had a go at that overlong (you were right) Background section, but I really can't see a way to do without most of the info and still provide an in-depth article on a song with so many points of notability. I hope by cutting the section back at least, the article meets GA standards now, but no hard feelings if you disagree. Cheers, JG66 (talk) 10:06, 21 November 2012 (UTC)
Hi Tomcat7. Thanks so much for the pass on this article, I'm really pleased it got their in the end. Like I said on the talk page, your getting me to rethink that opening section has made a huge improvement – the more I pulled out, the more focused it became. Thanks again!
