4 wire measurement of metallic carbon nanotubes.
[edit]You said that the electrical contacts are a significant perturbation on the resistivity of carbon nanotubes. Well, I can imagine that over a very short range that is true. I want to be able to calculate, for example, the resistivity of a 1 centimeter length of 'metallic' carbon nanotube. I would find even a 1% accuracy to be quite acceptable. - There are two contributions to the resistance of a nanotube. The first is the contact resistance. This itself has two components, the first being the intrinsic contact resistance that arises from going from a 3D system (the leads) to a 1D system (the nanotube) and back to 3D. This results in a resistance of 1/(2G0), or about 6.4 kOhms. There can also be extra contact resistance (in many cases much larger than 6.4 kOhms) from an imperfect interface between the metal leads and the nanotube. The second contribution is the internal resistance. This arises from electrons scattering inside the nanotube, e.g. with defects on the surface or with phonons. At low temperature (~4 K), where phonons are frozen out, the impurity-dominated internal resistance can be as low as ~1 kOhm per micron of length (see e.g. this paper). Note that there is nothing "fundamental" about this number; it is an empirical observation. At room temperature, phonon scattering yields an internal resistance ~10 kOhms per micron. So a cm length metallic nanotube would have a resistance of > 1 MOhm, and possibly much higher. Tls60 (talk) 17:53, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
