Welcome!

[edit]

Hello, Timsha54, and welcome to Wikipedia! My name is Shalor and I work with the Wiki Education Foundation; I help support students who are editing as part of a class assignment.

I hope you enjoy editing here. If you haven't already done so, please check out the student training library, which introduces you to editing and Wikipedia's core principles. You may also want to check out the Teahouse, a community of Wikipedia editors dedicated to helping new users. Below are some resources to help you get started editing.

Signing comments

[edit]

At Talk pages of articles or people, end your comments by typing four of ~. That 'signs' your User name. David notMD (talk) 02:27, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The citation needed tags mean that the editor who added these does not challenge the content, but wants to see citations. Any editor of the article may decide to find and add references. However, if this is a school project, that should be you. By the way, there is a method of using one reference more than once. This is required over creating new reference items that are duplicates. If you copy references from Haitian Vodou then your Edit summary should say that. David notMD (talk) 09:26, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Haitian mythology

[edit]

Fatoumata, regarding your request for feedback at Shalor's talk page about the paragraph you added at Haitian mythology, please note that editor DESiegel has "voted with his pen", and made several follow-up edits at that paragraph. Please look at what he did, both in the article, as well as the edit summaries in the Revision History, which gives additional clues.

The two main remaining problems that I see, are the section organization, and the appropriateness of the content to the topic.

  • section usage: – there is basically a short WP:LEAD (above the ToC) followed by your paragraph (as improved by DES), and then a weak "Related notions" section. Previously, the lead was pretty much the article, as "Related notions" by definition is about other things. The lead is not supposed to contain any unique information, but to be merely an introduction, summarizing the rest of the article. Now that the lead is not the whole article, most or all of its content should be moved to a named section of some sort. After that, the lead should be rewritten from scratch, to summarize the article in its current state.
  • Topc and content: – the entire content of the article now seems to be about Voodooism. However, the title of the article is "Haitian mythology". This is a mismatch, unless the definition of "Haitian mythology" is "Voodooism". Either the article title, or the content, must change. Per article title policy, the title indicates what the article is about and distinguishes it from other articles.

Neither of those points really answer your question, which was about feedback for your paragraph. Given my thoughts above, my first reaction would be: why did you add that paragraph to this article, rather than to the article Haitian Vodou, where it seems more appropriate? In addition, there may be overlap in what you added, and the History section at that article.

Finally, although it's okay to ask for help in multiple locations, please indicate a single location for the responses, so you don't fragment the discussion about a single topic. I noticed you also made the same request for help at the Teahouse, and have received some responses there as well. In the future, if you request help in multiple locations, please include in your request a link pointing to a single discussion location for all replies. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 09:24, 24 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
