Your note
[edit]Thanks for your note! Nice to hear from you! These days Wikipedia is a pretty mature project so it can be more intimidating for new contributors to feel comfortable just jumping in. I try to help out by leaving "welcome messages" for new users and trying to avoid the tendency some older editors have to "revert first and ask questions later". One of the best things is that working on articles is very collaborative, so you can always add images and text and then see if anyone fixes or adjusts it and hopefully learn from there (provided that you were followed by an experienced editor and not a vandal. WP:BOLD is a good guideline on just jumping in, which can be summed up as "just do it and if anyone objects they will let you know". In the case of your screenshots, they are great, we are always trying to add the newest ones on there as they are released, I just removed the old ones and moved yours up to the place-of-honour in the info box at the top right. So keep on editing away, watch what happens to the pages after your edits and others will hopefully give you the opportunity to learn and contribute more. I will mention that free software can be a bit of a zoo on Wikipedia. I do most of my work on aircraft articles and a bit on free software and I find free software is subject to a lot more strongly held opinions, prejudice and "difficult editors", so if you seem to run into problems in free software you might try editing in a different subject area for a bit. By all means if you have questions or run into rough spots do drop me a note either here or on my talk page. I am on almost everyday so I will probably get back to you quickly. - Ahunt (talk) 12:03, 25 May 2010 (UTC) PS I am using Lucid too, our house has been using Ubuntu since Feisty!
- I've been using Linux for almost 2 years now and I can't switch back, as they say once you go open source you can never go back and now I understand why. I've, personally, switched back and fourth between Debian and Ubuntu but found Ubuntu to be easier to maintain taking less time and effort. ThyArmageddon (talk) 17:58, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Your additions to Transmission were fine, I just made a few tweaks as you can see and moved your image up to the info box since it is the current version. Additions of text like you added need to cite a ref as per WP:V, so if you have one you can add it. Keep up the good work! - Ahunt (talk) 19:10, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hunt, there was no need for the citation, I've put the image there cause it is the citation :S that's the proof that it changed... + there is an english duplication mistake somewhere I'll fix it ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:15, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- On second thought, you know better :) I'll let you handle it then and learn from you. Btw I've noticed on your page you are a part of a lot of stuff like Ubuntu and Audacity and stuff, how do you add those to your home page ? - ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:20, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Refs are pretty much always needed for substantial text (ie not just spelling and grammar additions).
- I think those are userboxes you are looking at on the right side of my user page. People put them on their user pages to tell people about themselves. You can see how they were installed on my edit user page. There is a run down on them at Wikipedia:Userboxes and a list of all that we know about that you can use at Template:WP:UBS. - Ahunt (talk) 19:27, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Hunt, what do you think of the new Template:Linux ? - ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:29, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- I had a look though your changes - they look okay to me. Just keep a watch on it and see if anyone chimes in! - Ahunt (talk) 19:34, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Is there a reason for them to do that ? did I do anything wrong in there ? I think it would be very useful to know what GUI's and what Window Managers are available for Linux, just as important to know which applications are there ! - ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:37, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well I wouldn't think it was a problem but you never know what someone else might say. The normal editing cycle is WP:BRD so you make a bold change like that, if someone has a problem they will revert it and then it gets discussed on the talk page to come up with a consensus. It generally works as a process! - Ahunt (talk) 19:43, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- We'll see what happens then. I don't really understand the concept of userboxes, do I have to create my own or can I use others' ?
- I'm sorry I'm asking a lot, but if you don't ask you'll never learn right ? - ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:49, 25 May 2010 (UTC)

Those are all good questions - so ask away.
You can use existing userboxes or make up your own. They don't really contribute a lot to the encyclopedia, but they allow people to customize their own user pages, so perhaps it makes people feel more at home here. They may be worthwhile if people then stay and help contribute to articles!
There are lots of ways to show userboxes on your user page, some are neater than others. Here is how I do it. I could add to a user page:
{{Userboxtop}} {{User OS:Ubuntu}} {{User:CFeyecare/templates/linux|[[Ubuntu (operating system)|Ubuntu]]|thirty-three}} {{Template:User browser:Chromium}} {{User:UBX/GIMP}} {{User:Ahunt/Audacity}} {{Userboxbottom}}
and that will add those boxes over on the right as you see here on this page:
Substituting other boxes from say Wikipedia:Userboxes/Software for software boxes allows you to customize your list. Some fun onmes are at Wikipedia:Userboxes/Wikipedia/humour, but the master list is at Template:WP:UBS.
There are instructions on how to make your own at Wikipedia:Userboxes. If you do make any and would like to give other editors the chance to use them then you can list them on the appropriete page linked from Template:WP:UBS. Let me know if you have more questions. - Ahunt (talk) 22:10, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- Well, I took some of what you did, and mixed it up with a lot of stuff floating around and I got myself a draft, what do you think ? ^^ - ThyArmageddon (talk) 22:21, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
- No need to reinvent the wheel - most of the design ideas on my user page were swiped from other pages! I am flattered you used so many of the userboxes I designed! Your page looks good! - Ahunt (talk) 23:59, 25 May 2010 (UTC)
Sandbox
[edit]Ahunt what do you think of the sandbox ? ThyArmageddon (talk) 19:48, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Hi there. The article there looks okay although the refs could use formatting. My concern would be notability. I have started software articles before, to have them deleted as non-notable because they lack sufficient third party independent references, such as detailed reviews, etc. - Ahunt (talk) 21:18, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- Thanks for your reply Ahunt, so what do you suggest ? and feel free to edit whatever you want... ThyArmageddon (talk) 21:52, 7 June 2010 (UTC)
- The real key is to find some reliable third party refs, particularly detailed reviews of the software and add those in before posting it to mainspace. That will head off an AFD for notability! - Ahunt (talk) 01:42, 8 June 2010 (UTC)
