Jay Merrick re final corrections on Lynch Architects article

Dear Theo -

I'm extremely grateful for your assiduous help in fine tuning the Lynch Architects article. You may have gathered that I'm barely computer-literate. I've removed the half dozen or so Wiki-linked references you mentioned and replaced them with reliable neutral sources (Encyclopaedia Britannica, Penn University). You mention a couple of mis-spellings: my British spell-checker can't find them, and neither can I, and so I assume this is a reflection of the UK-US special relationship in language!! In any case, I trust that this won't be a fatal cause for refusal.

Here's the link to the updated article:

STOP

Are you using a bot? Stop it now. You're adding italic titles to families, orders, and even anatomy articles. That is not correct. Jesus. I don't even know how to fix how many articles you're incorrectly adding italic titles to.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 08:31, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Ok... you've stopped a few hours ago... *sigh*. Now how are you going to fix it? It seems like 5 or more out of every 10 of articles your bot added an {{italic title}} title to is wrong and must be reverted. Heck from the top 20 alone, only 5 of the articles have been correctly italicized. And you've changed at least 500 articles. *hits panic button* -- OBSIDIANSOUL 08:49, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Seriously. Not to mention that a large fraction of those articles to which you added {{italic title}} already had that tag in place. Please don't do anything like that again. Hqb (talk) 10:02, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Theo, you need to answer these questions fairly quickly otherwise I may temporarily have to withdraw your access to AWB until it's cleared up. If you are using a bot please provide a link to your approved bot account. Thanks. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 13:06, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict) I don't know what happened - I had one terminal window open and I saw the entire contents of the article, and if it met all the requirements at WP:ITALIC, I went ahead and hit "y" - I was doing that at a 2-3/minute rate, as I was also trying to do some other stuff (IRL) - and I swear, I have no idea where half of those edits came from - I want to think it was something running in the background, but I checked my logs and it appears that the only edits that I physically made were those 2-3 minute. I'm definitely straying away from tagging now, as I don't know where those other edits came from (it was probably a problem with the scripts).... but I would have no objections to me being required to manually trying to look through there and fix all the problems I caused before I'm allowed access to any semi-automated tools again. Again, I'm so sorry, and this definitely won't happen again. Theopolisme :) 13:11, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
To clarify, I was not using a bot, but rather a script for PyWikipedia thst required me to review each entire article - which is why I am baffled as to why I didn't see half of the edits I supposed "made" in the tool... I'm obviously not going to be using it again until I know what those problems were. Theopolisme :) 13:13, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Just started going through my contributions, and I really appreciate all of your help reverting this hellish mess. I'm still going to look through them again, though. Theopolisme :) 13:15, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
I've just completely started over with setting up the tool - it should would now (I believe the problem was that when it called the API, the API responded with multiple pages - so I've set a new rule to automatically abort if it receives >1 articles at a time, as well as another rule to auto abort if my account makes more than 5 edit/minute. I'm going to do a small test now and see if it works (to let you all know). Theopolisme :) 13:36, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Fixed I'm incredibly grateful for all of your assistance, and, while I'm confident that the script will now function as intended, I will not do anything else with it without your express "approval", shall we say - I don't want to cause a jarring mistake like this again. Theopolisme :) 14:01, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Just as an added note, as seen on Iberoraphidia and Stumpffia, if the article has a functioning and correctly formatted Taxobox/automatic taxobox/species box then the title will already be italicized with no need of the {{italic title}} template. So adding it is redundant and not needed.--Kevmin § 14:11, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Theo, we appreciate your enthusiasm and I am fully aware that all your edits and project work are in the very best of intentions, but I have been having concerns for quite a while now about what often appears to be a lack of attention to detail. I'm obviously not going to take any admin action but I would like you to firmly agree that you will not use any semi-automated tools whatsoever for a couple of days, whether they are AWB, Huggle, Bubble, Stiki, Eskimo, Lilipop, Lolipop, Twinkle, or any other scripts. You'll probably be able to use that time to get your computer sorted out, help out with some of the issues at the CVU that Worm has addressed, and do some content work. In the meantime I will be checking to see if the use of any of the features of PyWikipedia requires a registered, approved bot account. Take care. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 14:16, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
I think that sounds fair, so -- I firmly agree that I will not use any semi-automated tools whatsoever for a couple of days, whether they are AWB, Huggle, Bubble, Stiki, Eskimo, Lilipop, Lolipop (hehe), Twinkle, or any other scripts. Theopolisme :) 14:22, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Hello everyone, I should have said this sooner but I have just become aware of the discussion. I was the one who wrote that faulty script and sent it to Theo asking him to trial it to see if it works properly. I would like to take full responsibility for this as it was my script and I sent it to him when he was just trying to help. I would have been the one making those edits but I have been using my laptop lately as I am on a trip and it seems to hate coding. I would like for Theo's semi-automated tool rights to be re-enabled and for mine to be taken away temporarily. Thank you Theo for trying to fix the script and I am sincerely sorry that you received this blame when it should have been me. -- Cheers, Riley Huntley talk 22:28, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I was asleep. Anyway, as long as it's fixed now I'm fine with it. I know it was good intentioned. In the future, know that only the ranks of genus, species, and below are italicized (short of cultivars), everything above it (subtribe, tribe, family, superfamily, suborder, order, class, etc.) are not italicized.-- OBSIDIANSOUL 23:38, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
OK, I hope you have both learned something from this. The use of scripts is restricted to the ranks of genius ;) Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 02:45, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
<chortles> -- OBSIDIANSOUL 02:53, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
<hehe> Theopolisme :) 03:34, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

() The problem may not yet be fixed. This edit doesn't come under WP:ITALIC and seems wayward. --Stfg (talk) 13:59, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

That was simply me... I had seen italicized dates in other Beethoven/Mozart articles and just assumed it was correct, apologies. Theopolisme :) 14:02, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
On another note, I'd like to request permission to go through Category:Eleutherodactylus_stubs and add {{italic title}} to those pages that are an actual species and do not include an infobox to already automatically italicize the title... may I do this? Theopolisme :) 14:30, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Theo I honestly think there are more urgent asks on Wikipedia that you could be helping us with and that you should leave scripts well alone for a while - if something goes wrong again I or someone else would have to block you and neither of us want that. I hope you don't think I'm being patronising but I've dropped enough subtle hints and I believe that your time would be better spent by reducing that bureaucracy at CVU that you were jointly responsible for. There is still more talk there and edits spent on creating superfluous pages and micro-templates than on active counter-vandalism, and the pages are beginning to look like Christmas trees. Using your influence there would be immensely constructive and there would be no risk of wrecking the Wikipedia. Kudpung กุดผึ้ง (talk) 15:09, 26 August 2012 (UTC)
Please see this... And Kudpung, I sincerely do appreciate your advice and the time you're giving me. Theopolisme :) 15:33, 26 August 2012 (UTC)

Jay Merrick re final corrections on Lynch Architects article

Dear Theo -

I forgot to close my message with the four symbols. Here's the latest revised version of the Lynch Architects article:

http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia_talk:Articles_for_creation/Lynch_Architects&action=submit

And the correct sign-off!

Best, Jay

Jay Merrick (talk) 14:18, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Done - I've approved the article and moved it to the main article area, see Lynch Architects. :) Theopolisme :) 14:26, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

An invitation for you!

Hello, Theopolisme. We are in the early stages of initiating a project to plan, gain consensus on, and coordinate adding a feature to the main page wherein an article will be listed daily for collaborative improvement. If you're interested in participating, please add your name to the list of members.

Happy editing! AutomaticStrikeout 20:43, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

Thanks for your help in providing instructions for the schedule. Please note that there should be an allowance made for two dates, a start date and an ending date. As of now, I think there is only date allowed for (I could be wrong, though). AutomaticStrikeout 21:02, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Hmm... Is the end date a set date? Like, "5 days after" or something? Or does it vary? If it doesn't change, I could very simply make a version of {{Day+1}} that added 5 days (or whatever) to whatever date they set as the start date... but if it varies, I guess we'd have to do something else... Let me know! Theopolisme :) 21:14, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Sorry, I should have added that the plan is for each article to get one week. Of course, not everything is all ironed out yet, but I believe one week is the current plan. AutomaticStrikeout 21:17, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Ryan started a thread on the talk - whatever the verdict there, I'll go ahead and make a template for it .... or better yet, how about I just make a custom template especially for the WP:TAFI Schedule page that just does everything? I.E., you type in {{tafischedule|ARTICLETITLE|startdate}} and then it spits out:
09-09-12 to 09-16-12 ARTICLETITLE (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)
Sound okay? Theopolisme :) 21:22, 25 August 2012 (UTC)
Sounds great! Also, it is helpful to leave talkbacks at my page. However, I'm about to leave for a while, so I won't be available to help set up the TAFI project for the next 2-3 hours. AutomaticStrikeout 21:25, 25 August 2012 (UTC)

With regards to your plans for archiving the nominations, both successful and otherwise, would it be a good idea for me to make Wikipedia:Today's article for improvement/Archives/Successful Nominations and Wikipedia:Today's article for improvement/Archives/Unsuccessful Nominations blue links? Would doing so interfere with your plans for archiving by month? AutomaticStrikeout 23:35, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Hmm... I don't think those would really "work", if you know what I mean... Wouldn't we just want to have an archive for each month? Maintaining those pages would require some complicated moving around/transclusions/maybe a bot/who-knows-what - I think the easiest thing to do is just have a bot archive completed requests to /Archives/MONTH... Theopolisme 23:39, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Rather than setting an archive date, I think we should set the archive to one year (or something similar). Then, when something is closed place User:ClueBot III/ArchiveNow around it. Ryan Vesey 23:44, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
(edit conflict)Well, we could use those pages as "headquarters" for the archives, with links to monthly archives there. My feeling is that it would be helpful to have a central place where one can access all the archives, even if it's just a list containing links to the monthly archives. When a nomination passes or fails, it can be removed from the current nominations page, and added to either the successful or unsuccessful archives (whatever the case may be) for that month. The redlinks above will contain links to the monthly archives. We might also want to keep a record of the schedules, for future reference. AutomaticStrikeout 23:47, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Maybe we should discuss this on the project talk page instead? AutomaticStrikeout 23:56, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Ryan, I thought the idea was to set archive now to the {{TAFI Nom Top}} template. As far as Automatic's idea ... I like it, actually. The only thing it would require is probably manual archiving, unless someone wrote a bot specifically for it (as it has the different pages/etc) Also, I've closed the nom for Culture - do we have some sort of "Future TAFI" template, or do we just wait until it actually starts? Theopolisme 23:57, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Food for Thought

Wikipedia:Village_pump_(proposals)#Closing_Wikipedia:Wikiquette_assistance Thought you'd be interested since I emailed you about it. So now the hierarchy would be talk-->ANI-->RFC/U-->ArbCom. Dan653 (talk) 01:37, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

The debate has not been closed. Redirecting civility issues to AN/I is not part of the proposal, and where it may been touched upon, there is significant resistance to cluttering up up the already overloaded admin board - especially with invalid requests for non-admin intervention. UAA

Hi Theopolisme, I noticed you reported Brittgourmet to UAA as a promotional username. It declined the request because the user has been editing constructively, rather than making promotional edits. In cases like this, where the user has not made promotional edits, it is best to discuss the username with the user first - they may will willing to request a name change or create a new account, without the need to block them. That tends to be a friendly and less bitey way of dealing with newcomers who are not obviously out to promote something. ItsZippy (talkcontributions) 22:40, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Hi Zip - dreadfully sorry... I misread the options in Twinkle (I thought I was warning the user, rather than reporting them.. I typically just warn them/mention it to them manually, but hadn't see that tab before and thought it was a new addition.). Do you know of a way to add the option to warn the user for a username to Twinkle (or some other tool)? Thanks - Theopolisme 22:44, 28 August 2012 (UTC)
Agh, I see it now. Sorry... I don't know why I looked there... Theopolisme 22:46, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Hello

Hello Theo,

My name is Richard Kang. I am the CEO and President of Wipit, Inc. I am quite new to Wikipedia and am doing my best to learn how to be a good citizen of the this incredible community.

I created an article just a few minutes ago describing my company and took great effort to only utilize content which we completely own and that is written in a manner that is neutral and only factual in tone.

I have written an email granting Wikipedia license to the work found in our website which is now pending and have added proper citations to the claims made in the article. I am hoping to have this article describing our company published and available to the public, as we have made a significant amount of progress since last I tried, and I believe that having a reference about us on Wikipedia would be of value to those who are looking to learn more about us.

If you have any suggestions on how I can be a good citizen in the community, I would deeply appreciate some pointers. Thank you very much for your contribution to such a great organization.

Best Regards, Richard Kang

Based on your decline note, it seems you're a bit confused about the page. I moved Yogscast to The Yogscast, and should have automatically moved the talk page as well. However, Talk:The Yogscast is already occupied by a deletion notice placed erroneously by a bot a year and a half ago. This means that the page has already been moved, but its talk page is currently at Talk:Yogscast because of that holdup. I presume this qualifies as G6 (non-controversial maintenance) to move a talk page with its host. elektrikSHOOS (talk) 21:08, 4 September 2012 (UTC)

Ah, very true. I did not notice/realize Talk:Yogscast existed, and due to the fairly, shall we shall, "routine" nature of the wording of the G6 template, I had no idea what you were aiming for in this particular instance: my apologies. Is there a way to specify additional detail in G6 template? Or would that require just using the basic {{db-reason}} template? Cheers, Theopolisme 21:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
There is a rationale parameter, but I was a bit vague the first time around. Hopefully this second tag should clear things up for anyone else. Thanks! elektrikSHOOS (talk) 21:17, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Happy to help! Also, it's a bit odd that it's been this long since I've actually spoken with you... I've seen your name consistently in my watchlist, but I suppose it's always good to foster actual interaction.. albeit through a screen... but I digress. Theopolisme 21:19, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
Well, I'm one of those names that pops up a bit everywhere. I see your name pop in here and there, and it's nice to talk with you, too. Also, regarding the talkback notices, I typically remove them once I've read the message so my archives aren't clogged with them. It's fine to leave new ones if there's new messages. elektrikSHOOS (talk) 21:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)
