WikiCup 2016: Game On!

We are about to enter the second week of the 2016 WikiCup. The most recent player to sign up brings the current total to 101 contestants. Signups close on 5 February. If you’re interested, you can join this year's WikiCup here.

We are aware that in some areas the scoring bot’s numbers are a little bit off (i.e., overly generous) and are working to have that corrected as soon as possible.--MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 18:04, 7 January 2016 (UTC)

Nice work, C of E. But can I ask this? Is there any reason you've put St. rather than St, and would you object if it were changed to St? Thanks, Ericoides (talk) 05:38, 5 February 2016 (UTC)
Great, I'll change it. British spelling omits the full-stop in abbreviations if they end with the same letter as the word itself, eg, Revd (not Rev.), Mr, St, Dr, Lt-Col, etc. Ericoides (talk) 13:37, 5 February 2016 (UTC)

WikiCup 2015 March newsletter

One of Adam Cuerden’s several quality restorations during round 1

That's it, the first round is done, sign-ups are closed and we're into round 2. Forty-seven competitors move into this round (a bit shy of the expected 64), and we are roughly broken into eight groups of six. The top two of each group will go through to round 3, and then the top scoring 16 "wildcards" across all groups.

Twenty-two Good Articles were submitted, including three by Connecticut Cyclonebiskit (submissions), and two each by Denmark MPJ-DK (submissions), Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Florida 12george1 (submissions), and New South Wales Cas Liber (submissions). Twenty-one Featured Pictures were claimed, including 17 by There's always time for skeletons Adam Cuerden (submissions) (the Round 1 high scorer). Thirty-one contestants saw their DYKs appear on the main page, with a commanding lead (28) by Wales Cwmhiraeth (submissions). Twenty-nine participants conducted GA reviews with Lancashire J Milburn (submissions) completing nine.

If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages or by email. If you wish to start or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. In rem April Fools' Day court case articles

Re this: Yeah, I saw that and knew that, while I had a couple in mind as possibilities, nothing could compete with that one. So I was going to sit this year out (well, not exactly ... I have a tenth-anniversary missing-person case in mind for that day as well, and I think I can find the right balance with the hook. But I have to write the article first), but then I saw the Slate article and it was like ... ding! There you go! Daniel Case (talk) 18:10, 9 March 2016 (UTC)

@Daniel Case: Yes, didn't mean to steal your thunder of funny legal cases. By the way, I was wondering if you could review the Bataar nomination as today an editor came in and overrode the green tick but I think he misunderstood the April Fools Day notion and history of funny court cases on the day so could you add the green tick again if you agree with the hook and my rationale please? Another tweak?

Hi again. I'm just wondering if we should put a person in the beginning of the hook, like:

  • OK, thanks. I always feel that we could work on it more to make it great. That picture of a reconstructed tyrannosaurus doesn't help the hook, IMO. I wonder if we could stretch things and write:
  • ... that US officials grabbed a Tyrannosaurus that tried to enter the country illegally?
  • I wish we could reopen the nomination to get it right. We have a few more hours till this goes live, but I'm not sure if @Gatoclass: and the others will be online before that time. Yoninah (talk) 09:14, 1 April 2016 (UTC)
  • @Yoninah: The slight problem with the new one there is that the Tyrannosaurus did enter the US illegally given it got past customs with it's fake British papers and to the auction house. How about ...that US officials grabbed and sued a Tyrannosaurus that tried to enter the country illegally with a fake British passport? (Ok maybe drop the sued if you think its best) I think that is the best hook we can get without reopening the nom which would mean it would miss AFD. The C of E God Save the Queen! Stub Obliteration

For this week I'm introducing a sort of game to blast away those stale old stubs with a prize at the end of it. See Wikipedia:WikiProject Wales/Awaken the Dragon/Stub Obliteration 2016. Expansions rules don't apply to any articles done through this, all you have to do is ensure every article you submit is minimum 1.5kb readable prose in total and adequately sourced and readable and remove the stub tag and update the project tag on the talk page. It could be that the article is 1.2kb readable prose and you simply add 0.3 kb prose and just quickly smarten up the sources and give a minor copyedit. The goal is reducing the number of stubs we have and making them more consistent, minimum start class entries. Read the top for the rules and more details and add your name to it in the style of the main entries page if you want to participate. It's open to contestants and anybody who is participating in the editathon independently. Potentially a lot of points can be earned from mass basic expansions with this!♦ Dr. Blofeld 10:11, 4 April 2016 (UTC)

British Listed Buildings site

http://historicwales.gov.uk at long last provides a means of accessing the Cadw listed buildings descriptions via a direct url - they used only to be accessible by starting from scratch every time. If you zoom into the town / village that you're writing about, and tick the box on the right-hand side of the screen that says "Cadw listed buildings", dots for every listed building will show. Find the one you want, click it, click "details", click "save as pdf" and a new window with a url for the full listing description will open. I'd suggest it's better to use that than the BLB site, since the Historic Wales site is going to be more up-to-date and the BLB is an advertising-based mirror site anyway.
