Administrators' newsletter – July 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (June 2021).
Interface administrator changes

|
- Consensus has been reached to delete all books in the book namespace. There was rough consensus that the deleted books should still be available on request at WP:REFUND even after the namespace is removed.
- An RfC is open to discuss the next steps following a trial which automatically applied pending changes to TFAs.
- IP addresses of unregistered users are to be hidden from everyone. There is a rough draft of how IP addresses may be shown to users who need to see them. This currently details allowing administrators, checkusers, stewards and those with a new usergroup to view the full IP address of unregistered users. Editors with at least 500 edits and an account over a year old will be able to see all but the end of the IP address in the proposal. The ability to see the IP addresses hidden behind the mask would be dependent on agreeing to not share the parts of the IP address they can see with those who do not have access to the same information. Accessing part of or the full IP address of a masked editor would also be logged. Comments on the draft are being welcomed at the talk page.
- The community authorised COVID-19 general sanctions have been superseded by the COVID-19 discretionary sanctions following a motion at a case request. Alerts given and sanctions placed under the community authorised general sanctions are now considered alerts for and sanctions under the new discretionary sanctions.
Big Brother recaps
Hello there, @TheDoctorWho:,
I came to the place, rearing to help out with the new Big Brother 23 season and I just want to make improvements. For your info, I was the one who help completed the last season episode information to make it complete after none of the recap had been filled up, so I came to do under some knowledge, as well as the improvements for the Big Brother articles to promote neutrality and consistency (and also removing potential spoilers). If there is something I can do to help, I will be grateful, but I also need an explanation on why you forego the bullet point instead of the large text, which is more preferred and readable.
TVSGuy (talk) 11:37, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- @TVSGuy: Hi, thanks for your message! Just for reference as long as the information can be supported by reliable sources OR it is seen on television spoilers can stay. Per WP:SPOILER we shouldn't remove anything only on the basis that it could be a spoiler especially if its essential to the article.
- As for the episode table, the bullet point format was originally created off of this weekly table, for the following season we began using an episode table instead because that's what MOS:TV says to use. However when we did we just continued using the same format which is wrong. WP:BULLETLIST states
Bullets are used to discern, at a glance, the individual items in a list, usually when each item in the list is a simple word, phrase or single line of text [...] They are not appropriate for large paragraphs.
which is essentially what the bullet points are doing in the previous seasons. They are not creating a list but instead single large paragraphs, in turn violating MOS. To solve that problem it should be listed in a single paragraph. (And preferably in 200 words or less, especially for one-hour episodes. More words can be negotiated for 1.5- or 2-hour episodes.) MOS should not be ignored without good reason and using the single paragraph presents the exact same information, in the exact same way, so no reason to ignore.
- Hope this helps, let me know if you have anymore questions and I look forward to improving the BB23 article with you as the season progresses. TheDoctorWho (talk) 20:27, 11 July 2021 (UTC)
- I understand the reason behind the new changes, and its tough for me to adapt on this, but I will get use to it as quickly as I can. I will do my best to help out if I can; unfortunately, I could not see the season in Singapore but I have to rely on most online sources, such as BobbyMGSK and other relevant sources if possible, which are the primary sources I did for the BB22 last year when I did the cleanup. If time permits, I also need your help to do some cleanup for the past seasons when applicable, but depending if I am available in real time. TVSGuy (talk) 14:14, 12 July 2021 (UTC)
- @TVSGuy: I am in the United States and have access to both CBS and Paramount+ so I can see all episodes and the live feeds. And of course, as long as I have the time and means to help I'm happy to do what I can where I can. Just let me know what and where and I'll se what I can do. TheDoctorWho (talk) 05:56, 13 July 2021 (UTC)

- I seen your summary was fine, but again I won't be able to help out for the most of the Big Brother due to that but I do my best to see what I can help out, such as minor editing; the other one thing I will be looking out for is Survivor 41, another CBS show of such nature, and I will wait for the time when the season is due to come. Unlike BB, I can see Survivor in Singapore but after a few days of airing. Anyway, good job. TVSGuy (talk) 15:16, 21 July 2021 (UTC)

Request for FAC help
Hello. Sorry for this random message. I was wondering if you could help with my current FAC? I completely understand if you do not have the time or the interest. I just wanted to reach out and ask. I hope you are doing well and staying safe. Have a great weekend! Aoba47 (talk) 01:52, 11 September 2021 (UTC)
- I've just looked over it and left a few comments, given my work is primarily in TV-related areas and that I'm not as experienced in people-related article I hope they were helpful! TheDoctorWho (talk) 02:00, 13 September 2021 (UTC)

This is the first time I am putting a people-related article through the FAC process so I am not that experienced in this area either. New Page Patrol newsletter September 2021
Hello TheDoctorWho,
Please join this discussion - there is increase in the abuse of Wikipedia and its processes by POV pushers, Paid Editors, and by holders of various user rights including Autopatrolled. Even our review systems themselves at AfC and NPR have been infiltrated. The good news is that detection is improving, but the downside is that it creates the need for a huge clean up - which of course adds to backlogs.
Copyright violations are also a serious issue. Most non-regular contributors do not understand why, and most of our Reviewers are not experts on copyright law - and can't be expected to be, but there is excellent, easy-to-follow advice on COPYVIO detection here.
At the time of the last newsletter (#25, December 2020) the backlog was only just over 2,000 articles. New Page Review is an official system. It's the only firewall against the inclusion of new, improper pages.
There are currently 706 New Page Reviewers plus a further 1,080 admins, but as much as nearly 90% of the patrolling is still being done by around only the 20 or so most regular patrollers.
If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process or its software.
Various awards are due to be allocated by the end of the year and barnstars are overdue. If you would like to manage this, please let us know. Indeed, if you are interested in coordinating NPR, it does not involve much time and the tasks are described here.

Administrators' newsletter – October 2021
News and updates for administrators from the past month (September 2021).
- Following an RfC, extended confirmed protection may be used preemptively on certain high-risk templates.
- Following a discussion at the Village Pump, there is consensus to treat discord logs the same as IRC logs. This means that discord logs will be oversighted if posted onwiki.
- DiscussionTools has superseded Enterprisey's reply-link script. Editors may switch using the "Discussion tools" checkbox under Preferences → Beta features.
- A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
- Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
- The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.
- Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
- The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Promotion of Grey's Anatomy (season 17)
- Congratulations on your recent FA promotion. I know that this one took some time, but I am glad that it worked out in the end. Best of luck with everything on and off Wikipedia. Aoba47 (talk) 02:39, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: Thank you so much! Putting it in perspective, it took the first 10 out of 16 weeks of my college semester to make it through FAC, quite a long time when thinking of it that way. Hope everything is going well! TheDoctorWho (talk) 04:10, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- Anytime! You should be proud of the work you put into the article. That is an interesting and accurate perspective. The FAC process can take some time (and some nominations take longer than others to attract reviewers for whatever reason). If you ever nominate a FAC in the future, I will do my best to help. I hope everything is going well with college. At the risk of sounding incredibly lame, I do miss being in college lol. Aoba47 (talk) 04:14, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: (sorry for the pings, not sure if you're watching the page) It was definitely one of my most, if not the most, extensive work I've put into a Wikipedia article so far. It did take a while to gather other reviews at first but I'm glad it did. Was beginning to worry for a moment that it would get archived from lack of participation. I would definitely prefer that it take time over getting archived. Same goes for you, or anything else I could ever help you with for that matter! College is definitely an experience, but I am enjoying it; I don't doubt I'll miss it someday as well. TheDoctorWho (talk) 04:21, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- I appreciate the pings so it is all good. No need to apologize. I was very happy that you got a lot of really solid reviews from the FAC. I would imagine that it would take time to gather all the resources on that season as that show is still popular and widely covered in the media. I am curious on how that season will be discussed in retrospective articles. I know this is super cliché advice, so apologies in advance, but I would really make sure to be present and to take advantage of all the resources and opportunities available at college. That is my biggest regret. It sucks that you are experiencing college during a pandemic, but I am glad you are enjoying it. Aoba47 (talk) 04:40, 5 November 2021 (UTC)
- @Aoba47: It definitely did take some time to sort through them, but I'm glad there was an influx of sources; I've worked on television articles before where it takes quite time to dig up all the sources, especially on individual seasons, let alone finding unique information once I have them. Since you mentioned it, I'm curious too. Between the storylines surrounding COVID, the return of Dempsey, Knight, Dane, Leigh, and Drew, and the critic reviews I feel the season won't be forgotten.
- Thank you for the advice, and I definitely will! I do agree with the latter of that though; I was a senior in high school when lockdown happened so I went into college experiencing classes at half capacity mixed with Zoom classes and cancelled activities, we have gotten a bit closer back to normal this year at least, or so I think, hard to say since I wasn't there to experience normal beforehand .
