54th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry

I don't think I understand the call up here. If Lincoln asked the state governors to raise an army within their respective states, by Title 32 of the United States Code, that is raising to militia army (guardsmen). Lincoln is then, by Title 10 of the United States Code calling the militia forces up for temporary federal active duty to completmement the regular army forming the Union Army. Also if I'm reading the history right, Robert Shaw was commissioned as an officer by each of the states governors that he served under to serve in the state's volunteer army but he did not hold a regular army commission by the President of the United States. In other words, if he were to have survived the Civil War and into the dispersement of the Union Army, he would no longer be in federal service and his rank would not carry over to the regular army.

My question is if a state volunteer forces are not militia under temporary federal call up for service, then what are they classified as? Neovu79 (talk) 17:41, 1 December 2008 (UTC)

Though the states were needed to raise their own volunteer regiments, they were afterwards mustered into Federal/Confederate service, and now under orders from the War Departments. There were still militias within the states, though under control of their respective governing bodies for in-state use. These state units were the core of the early enlistments, as they were already trained men-at-arms and quick to organize. Some of the Massachusetts regiments did use "Volunteer Militia" in their names, due to the fact that most of the recruits were previously in state run units before the war. With the 54th Massachusetts, this regiment was raised using new recruits, except for some of the officers transferred from other regiments, solely for the purpose of Federal use, thus not a militia.

There were many who ended up reenlisting in the Regular Army, and I suppose that any position they held in a prior state raised regiment would be taken into consideration when joining a new unit. Had Shaw survived, and chosen to reenlist or transfer into the Regular Army, I'm sure his time as a colonel would greatly affect the next rank given him. Spelling of Albuquerque

Yes. Wikipedia has a weak search engine, so editors are encouraged to put in redirect pages for any likely misspellings. That way, when people type the wrong thing in the search box they'll still get the article they want. This does mean you have to be wary when writing material. A good practice (that I follow often but not always) is to click each link in the article and make sure it goes to the right place, and that it gets there without a redirect. --Uncia (talk) 04:08, 23 December 2008 (UTC)

Father's death

It took me several hours! I searched through all my Maine Civil War Adjutant report's and came up with nothing - that's when I started searching beyond the state. It didn't help that the 1990 Update to the Descendants of Thomas Leavitt had his death as 3 August instead of the 30th. Did you know that John Leavitt, father to George Washington and Joseph, transcribed all the letters he received from his sons, and they're in a book at the University of Virginia (link to write-up)? Joseph was mortally wounded at Spottsylvania, and Capt John actually went down to the hospital in Alexandria,VA to see him before he died and wrote home about the conditions of his son. No, I didn't see that! I've answered a few genealogical queries that turned out to be Russian/Polish Leavitt families, though none were already members of NALF. I have a question on military protocol, of which I know you are quite knowledgeable (and I am wholly ignorant). Why, do you suppose, a native of Portland, Maine, would enlist with a New York regiment? Was this pretty common? Or uncommon? His brother Joseph signed up with a Maine regiment, which makes sense to me. But I can't figure (I know very little about this) why his brother would enlist in New York, unless he was already somehow involved there in business. Does that make sense? Thanks! George W was absent from Portland during the 1860 census - Helen E (Green) Leavitt was living with her parents. I don't see a match for him elsewhere, and tried different spellings in New York City area. He's not even listed in the 1858 Portland street directory (which has father John as trader and brother Joseph as shipmaster). I'm thinking that he must have been down there either for schooling or work when he signed up, or maybe following the sea, and was staying over in NYC. He wasn't part of the initial recruitment of the 5th (Duryee's Zouaves), as they left for Virginia in May and G W didn't muster in until 8 July. The History of the 5th NY book mentions additional new recruits joing them (26 enlisting on 6 July for 3 years, 100 men showing up on 20 July), so he was part of a later enlistment drive. Brother Edward May Leavitt supposedly served as well, in the Navy (I still need to research him, as pages in the 1990 Thomas Leavitt update have conflicting dates). I'm glad you had this page on your watch list - I sure messed up there! Somehow, I was looking at an old version from 2007 ([2]), saw two image urls that were redlinked, and deleted them (and, as it turns out, two years of edits along with it). I DID notice the high amount of negative bytes listed after I did this and thought it was a little too high for the two lines I deleted. I think I was looking at NH Historical Markers before this, and must have been looking at contributions an editor had made elsewhere in NH. Sorry about this! General Joseph Martin

Thanks for warding off those vandals. They just never seem to let up, do they? (Like Batman's Joker...) You're right about contacting that chapter of the DAR. General Martin was quite a fellow. I grew up hearing stories about him and his (sometimes outrageous) exploits, not to mention his Indian wife and child. I tried to be impartial (NPOV, lol) about him, but he was my ancestor. This whole thing is outrageous. 27thMaine is interferring with my work for harassment purposes. I did extensive research and put a whole lot of time and effort into writing the Marshfield article. I wrote most of the article. 27th Maine had no involvement with this page at all. But out of nowhere he shows up and tore apart my work and moved part of it to another page without even discussing it with me first. I was editing another section and a few minutes later when I looked back at the main page, much of it was gone. The manner in which he did this strongly indicates that he acted out of mean-spiritedness, rather than an effort to be constructive. I think he took such action because I objected to a couple of smaller edits that he made earlier in the day. I guess I offended his male ego. Behavior such as his discourages authors from contributing, since it is like a hijacking of someone's project. While constructive editing is valuable, when editing is done in a manner to frustrate and aggravate someone that should not be tolerated by Wikipedia. As the amount of free time I have is very limited, I clearly have better things to do than find someone on Wikipedia to harrass. I was simply looking through Massachusetts pages that needed tidying, found the one on Marshfield, and cleaned up a few not-so-notable persons (with no wikipedia article on them), as well as an external link (The official Aerosmith website link because a couple members live in town?) that really only added to the overwhelming size of the page. Then, as I saw happen with Lowell, Massachusetts, with the history section moved to its own page due its size, I thought it best to give the history of Marshfield its own page. I didn't touch any of your writing, and only enhanced the headings above the paragraphs to make a table of contents, in proper Wikipedia style. If I was simply a vandal, I would have instead cut parts out of the extensive history to keep the size of the page within its limits.

Marshfield is worthy of its own history page, and anyone going to the main town article have a clear link to the new page. I love what you've done so far, and look forward to reading more about the town. I've got pilgrim blood in me from some line, though not sure off the top of my head which one. As you may have already heard, the Wikipedia community lost an invaluable member of the community last month. Adrianne Wadewitz was a feminist scholar of 18th-Century British literature, and a prolific editor of the site. As part of a worldwide series of tributes, New England Wikimedians, in conjunction with local institutions of higher learning, have created three edit-a-thons that will be occurring in May and June. The events are as follows: May 21st at Northeastern University's Snell Library, in the Digital Scholarship Commons on the second floor May 22nd at Brown University's Rockefeller Library, in the Digital Scholarship Lab June 25th at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (exact location TBA), where we will also be hosting a "how to conduct an edit-a-thon" session beforehand We hope that you will be able to join us, whether you are an experienced editor or are using Wikipedia for the first time. March Madness 2017

G'day all, please be advised that throughout March 2017 the Military history Wikiproject is running its March Madness drive. This is a backlog drive that is focused on several key areas:

• tagging and assessing articles that fall within the project's scope
• updating the project's currently listed A-class articles to ensure their ongoing compliance with the listed criteria
• creating articles that are listed as "requested" on the project's various task force pages or other lists of missing articles.

As with past Milhist drives, there are points awarded for working on articles in the targeted areas, with barnstars being awarded at the end for different levels of achievement.

The drive is open to all Wikipedians, not just members of the Military history project, although only work on articles that fall (broadly) within the military history scope will be considered eligible. More information can be found here for those that are interested, and members can sign up as participants at that page also.

The drive starts at 00:01 UTC on 1 March and runs until 23:59 UTC on 31 March 2017, so please sign up now.

Hello, The27thMaine. Voting in the 2017 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23.59 on Sunday, 10 December. All users who registered an account before Saturday, 28 October 2017, made at least 150 mainspace edits before Wednesday, 1 November 2017 and are not currently blocked are eligible to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

2017 Military Historian of the Year and Newcomer of the Year nominations and voting

As we approach the end of the year, the Military History project is looking to recognise editors who have made a real difference. Each year we do this by bestowing two awards: the Military Historian of the Year and the Military History Newcomer of the Year. The co-ordinators invite all project members to get involved by nominating any editor they feel merits recognition for their contributions to the project. Nominations for both awards are open between 00:01 on 2 December 2017 and 23:59 on 15 December 2017. After this, a 14-day voting period will follow commencing at 00:01 on 16 December 2017. User group for Military Historians

Greetings,

"Military history" is one of the most important subjects when speak of sum of all human knowledge. To support contributors interested in the area over various language Wikipedias, we intend to form a user group. It also provides a platform to share the best practices between military historians, and various military related projects on Wikipedias. An initial discussion was has been done between the coordinators and members of WikiProject Military History on English Wikipedia. Now this discussion has been taken to Meta-Wiki. Contributors intrested in the area of military history are requested to share their feedback and give suggestions at Talk:Discussion to incubate a user group for Wikipedia Military Historians.

2019 US Banknote Contest

There are an estimated 30,000 different varieties of United States banknotes, yet only a fraction of these are represented on Wikimedia Commons in the form of 2D scans. Additionally, Colonial America, the Confederate States, the Republic of Texas, multiple states and territories, communities, and private companies have issued banknotes that are in the public domain today but are absent from Commons. In the months of November and December, WikiProject Numismatics will be running a cross-wiki upload-a-thon, the 2019 US Banknote Contest. The goal of the contest is to increase the number of US banknote images available to content creators on all Wikimedia projects. Participants will claim points for uploading and importing 2D scans of US banknotes, and at the end of the contest all will receive awards. Whether you want to claim the Gold Wiki or you just want to have fun, all are invited to participate. Points can be earned through reviewing articles on the AutoCheck report, reviewing articles listed at WP:MILHIST/ASSESS, reviewing MILHIST-tagged articles at WP:GAN or WP:FAC, and reviewing articles submitted at WP:MILHIST/ACR. Service awards and barnstars are given for set points thresholds, and the top three finishers will receive further awards.
