Of course. Has Wikimedia ever decided on one single transliteration standard for Arabic, at least for title pages? Is there a Wikipedia internal section about this? Tfine80 29 June 2005 15:48 (UTC)

[edit]Thanks for your many useful additions and edits to the Disputed Title section. This has been a very difficult bit of work and your contribution is most welcome. Regards. Blimpguy 29 June 2005 19:58 (UTC)
Thanks. I think there is a fair way of writing about him without disrespecting either argument, and I imagine that this is a very difficult page to watch. What prompted me was that I noticed what I considered to a too definitive sentence in the title paragraph and then I realized that the article had a sort-of inconsistent approach at various places. I'm sure it was the product of numerous counter-edits. Tfine80 30 June 2005 00:03 (UTC)
Hello!
I replied to your comment on Skåneland but I think you may have missed it.
- Nice to see you liked it. If you are interested in expanding articles that should cover broad topics and where a New Yorker may be able to find material and are currently not more than stubs, there are Swedish literature, Swedish culture and several of the Swedish kings from the 16th century and earlier (see List of Swedish monarchs).
- Similar article that I have been involved with and may also fascinate you include Nordic Seven Years' War and Gustav Vasa.
- The articles in Category:Swedish_people of different quality and length, some might interest you.
- More curiously, there are the Mythological kings of Sweden and Semi-legendary kings of Sweden and all the kings mentioned on those pages that have basically been the work of one Swedish strongman (not me, though), that could probably all do some textual improvement (copyedit, that is).
- Furthermore, it has been suggested that Emanuel Swedenborg might make it to feature status if it includes in line references. In order to add those, I would like if someone read the article and noted what sections that would need in text references.

After writing this, I also have noticed that History of Scandinavia was chosen as a collaberation of the week for last week, so maybe that would interest you. --Fred-Chess July 4, 2005 23:57 (UTC)
Hello,
You erased this sentence :
This can be explained by the fact that New Hampshire Republicans are more libertarian than conservative
You're right in saying that there were no source to say it, but it is not POV. New Hampshire is a libertarian state, and New England Republican voters really tend to be more libertarian than Old South or Midwest Republican voters, who are more interested in conservative issues.
What I meant was that as Bush 2004 lost New Hampshire because he focused more on Conservative issues and less on libertarian ones thant in 2000.

Marcel Junod
[edit]Hi there, I was very positively surprised to find a new link to an en-WP version of the article about Marcel Junod in the de-WP. I'm the main author of the German article. Just out of curiosity, what was your reason for starting a translation? I got the pictures and the permission to use them via e-mail from the son of Marcel Junod, and he ask me a while ago whether it would be possible to prepare translations for the English and the French Wikipedia. Well, here you are, doing the work I promised him I would do :o). To find your translation was one of the most fascinating Wikipedia experiences for me yet. On another issue, I very much like your point of view as expressed on your user page and your translation of the Mönchgut article as well as your reasons for doing it.
Last but not least, I would like to ask you whether you could proof-read a translation of mine. I have translated another one of "my" articles, namely Internationale Rotkreuz- und Rothalbmond-Bewegung. It's an excellent article in the de-WP (the equivalent of a featured article), and if you take a look at its counterpart in the en-WP, you will easily see the reason for my translation. You can find my translation at International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. It's not fully up-to-date with its German counterpart as I've recently added some small pieces of information to the German article, but these are easy to add later. Furthermore, in the German Wikipedia the terms "International Committee of the Red Cross", "International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies", "Red Cross" and "Red Crescent" redirect to the article about the International Movement, as it is best to combine all these information within a uniform article. It would be nice if you could check my translation, improve the parts which are not optimal, and finally transfer the translation to the en-WP.
Thanks again for your translation of the Marcel Junod article. If you need any help, don't hesitate to contact me! Best Regards, Uwe from the German Wikipedia
- Well, it's still only a stub. :) Basically I was looking through the list of German feature articles for items that had no counterparts on the English Wikipedia yet. I think it's important to at least have a basic summary so that if people are interested in translating the full article they can see the demand is there. This article was impressively substantial and fascinating to me, and you should definitely be proud if you have helped raise his profile even a little bit. I remember thinking that people don't consider the Swiss history of the Red Cross enough and that the blessed fanaticism of its members in the thirties and forties was one of the few truly noble heroisms of the period. I didn't have enough time to do the full translation, but I will certainly try to get around to it fairly soon, or we can collaborate on it.
- At the time I noticed the same problems with the English Wikipedia's Red Cross pages, and even considered starting what you have done, but I decided that I didn't have enough knowledge on the topic to get it right. I will certainly review your translation, and I agree that the pages should be merged.
- I was joking a bit about the Mönchgut page, but I do feel that the internationalism of Wikipedia is a great and underestimated force for international understanding, and I am very impressed with the German Wikipedia with its rapid growth and exceptional quality. Tfine80 6 July 2005 23:16 (UTC)
- Hi there again & thanks for your reply. I would be glad to assist with the translation of the Marcel Junod article. I guess it might be a good idea to transfer the pictures for that article from the de-WP to the Commons to make them available for both language versions (and other versions like French, Portugese etc. as well). One additional question. From August 4 to 8, there will be the First International Wikimedia Conference, the Wikimania, to be held in Frankfurt, Germany. Within the context of the event, there is a Writing competition. As "collaboration is encouraged" and "Collaborative effort" is a plus - would you like to collaborate with me on the translation of the Marcel Junod article with the explicite aim of submitting both versions as a "bilingual double-pack" for the "History & Biography" category of that competition? Or judging by your excellent multi-language abilities, additional translations as well :o). More information on the competition can be found here. It would be an honour for me to collaborate with you, and what collaboration could be better than to work together to make such an article available in different languages? Last but not least, excellent work so far on my translation of the article about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement. Many thanks for that, too! Let me know what you think about the competition idea. Best Regards, Uwe from the German Wikipedia
- I think that's a great idea. Are you planning to go to Frankfurt for part of it? I actually lived there for three months in 2000, working and studying German, and if I could find a cheap flight and a place to crash with an old friend I might even consider going. But I'm still a Wikipedia novice overall so I don't know, and the flight rates seem to have gone up a lot since a few years ago.
- I certainly might be able to make a Portuguese version of the Junod article as well, but obviously we need to finish the other things first. But it's a fantastic subject for a collaboration; Wikipedia has some similarities with the Red Cross when you think about it!
- * headed by a hands-off, strictly nonpolitical organization in one country (yet one still criticized for being too insular and nationally/culturally biased)
- * founded by an eccentric (and all-too-human) businessman with at times a bit more enthusiasm than the immediate financial realities should permit
- * numerous branches, where the only rules are openess, universal access, and a commitment to the organizational ideals
- * established in every part of the world
- It's funny. I've been debating with some of my friends the merits of Wikipedia as a future informational nexus, and despite being a cynic toward many things, I've actually become a real believer! Today the order created out of the insanity of the London bombing article on the English Wiki only magnified this feeling. Let's certainly try to do a great job on these dual articles, and perhaps we can even do a bit more on other, more specific and localized aspects of Red Cross history as well. Tfine80 7 July 2005 22:41 (UTC)
- Good evening, I will contact you tomorrow to finalize our "plans" for the Marcel Junod article and to comment on your interesting thoughts about the Wikipedia and the Red Cross. One thought came to my mind this weekend. We should probably concentrate on the English translation only (no other languages) as it might be difficult to find his book in other languages to include the proper citations. I own the German and the English edition, but for any other language I have no idea whether they even exist. Okay, the French one is available, a Spanish version too, but I have great doubts about a portugese version of his book. Let me know about your plans for the translation, for example whether you think that you have the time and energy to translate it completely for yourself just in time. Alternatively, we can share the translation work between both of us, or I do a raw translation and you finalize it into a native-language quality text.
- On aother topic, a dead Fin Whale was found in the Baltic Sea yesterday evening near where I live, so I went to see it and to take some pictures. It's a very rare event (the fifth only case of a Fin Whale in the Baltic Sea) because they don't live in the Baltic Sea under normal conditions. Tomorrow in the very early morning, scientists from a local museum will perform the dissection. Being a biologist for myself (though neither a marine biologist nor a zoologist), following the dissection will be interesting. Best Regards, Uwe from the German Wikipedia
- Yes, I will start to get to work on the Junod article. I think we should do it in the same manner as the red cross article (which obviously still needs more editing -- I should have some time tonight), post it on a talk page and translate/edit jointly as we go. Or I could produce one draft translation first and then you could check it and edit. But I definitely have some time this week to work on it.
- The title of the book in Portuguese would be "Guerreiro sem armas," and I found at least one site that uses this: http://www.icrc.org/web/por/sitepor0.nsf/iwpList89/096C9902D60F34B1C1256DEA00347A51 However, I think we should focus on doing the best article in English that we can, especially if we want to put forward a good effort in the contest. I'm not sure I would have time to do it properly in Portuguese considering its length. I would also like to find a related red cross topic to which I can add some original research, so it's more of a two-way thing. But I certainly need to get busy. Best, Tfine80 22:02, 12 July 2005 (UTC)
- Good morning again, I've created a sub-page from my user page in the German Wikipedia to work on the translation similarily to the Red Cross artikel, see Marcel Junod. I think we should jointly work as time permits for both of us, with the added burden for you of proof-reading and improving my work. I hope that my additions are still an overall benefit :o). Once the translation is finished we can transfer it back to the en-WP and submit both versions to the Wikimania writing contest. Any debate about the translation should also happen of the discussion page of the translation. Hope to see you soon over there, Uwe from the German Wikipedia

Goethe House
[edit]I see you pitched in at Goethe House - thanks. I'm wondering if you could check something - Goethe's mother was a burgermeister but I'm not sure whether this would be the burgermeister or a burgermeister. (Also bearing in mind that we're talking about the 18th century.) I'd appreciate it if you could fill me in on this - or if you could add or fact-check anything on Goethe's background contained within the article. It's a new effort and the sources are only so-so. Cheers. Cormaggio 12:43, 22 July 2005 (UTC)
Hi,
I am interested in why you removed several paragraphs from the article on Deutsche Bank. I haven't contributed any content to the article, but I was the one who requested that it be created, and I'm not sure I totally understand your edits.
Cheers,

- Thank you for your timely response. I now understand why you made the edits. I've read a bit about Wikipedia:WikiReader/Frankfurt. I wish you luck with the project.
Frankfurt
[edit]I did not "erase the work the whole Wikireader group has been doing" as you wrote, I only reverted YOUR edit (and just ONE of your edits), not the edits of the other users. You have deleted valuable information that is not found elsewhere. The reason why I wrote about the exact number of skyscrappers and the reason why I gave precise data for Frankfurt airport was because in the past some users had written that Frankfurt was the ONLY European city with so many skyscrappers, and that Frankfurt airport was the largest airport in Europe. If we erase the information, at some point in the future I'm sure someone will write again that Frankfurt is the ONLY European city with so many skyscrappers, and that Frankfurt airport is the largest in Europe. You can only deter these people with precise data. True, the information is maybe a bit long for an Introduction section, but then find another place in the article to insert that information, instead of deleting rashly everythig. For now I am reverting it back. Besides, in your edit there were some bad English wording such as "a many open natural spaces", which I have corrected, and there was some awkward written English, such as "huge skyscrapper" or "packed financial centers". Hardouin 16:02, 24 July 2005 (UTC)
- You wrote: "Eventually a skyscraper section and transporation section will have to be made anyway". Then why don't you make these sections? Me I am already working on way too many articles, so I can't write these sections. But if you have the time and energy, write them. An "Introduction" section is always an akward thing. I think everything that is in the Introduction section should be moved to specific sections, and in the end the Introduction section should disappear. The only introduction, after all, should be the few sentences preceding the Table of Contents on top of the article. Hardouin 16:47, 24 July 2005 (UTC)

Translations of Red Cross related articles
[edit]Hi Tfine80, as you can see I have registered with the English Wikipedia now. Using my new identity I've hammered out a couple of typos and other small mistakes from the Marcel Junod article. Furthermore, I've added some items to the list of references and one weblink to a facsimile of the cable which Junod received in August 1945 about Hiroshima (found it while surfing the ICRC's website). One thing which came to my mind about the list of references: in the German Wikipedia, there are style guidelines for formatting the items in this list, and the current format of the list in the English version follows those guidelines (which is no surprise as the list was copied from the German version). I've checked a couple of featured articles in the English Wikipedia and it seems to me that either no such guidelines exist, or that they are not strictly followed by the authors and enforced during the "featured article" voting procedure. Anyway, I kindly ask you to check whether we should follow any guidelines which possibly exist for the format of the list of references, as well as for other aspects of the article (for example, whether quotations should start and end with "[...]" as in the German Wikipedia). Then, please take a final look on the article and give me your final okay when you think it's ready for nomination. I will then have a last check too, and after that I will put both versions up on the nomination page for the competition. Apart from that - do you think that the article has serious chances of being voted a featured article in the English Wikipedia?
Regarding your statement that you would also like to write another Red Cross related article - there are plenty of them waiting in the German Wikipedia to be translated :). The translation of the article about the International Movement should follow the steps of the Marcel Junod article in the very near future as it is essentially complete and ready. For the time after that, here are some suggestions for you. First, from the five founders of the ICRC's precursor, three are missing - de:Louis Appia, de:Théodore Maunoir and de:Gustave Moynier, and one - de:Guillaume-Henri Dufour has a stub only in the en-WP undeserving of his relevance in Swiss as well as Red Cross history. All of them are medium size in the de-WP (I was heavily involved in all of them), so that might be a feasible goal for you. Then there is an article about another interesting delegate, de:Friedrich Born which might be of interest for you as well, though unfortunately it's not as sophisticated as the article about Marcel Junod because only very few information is available about Friedrich Born. My most recent work in the de-WP is de:Genfer Konventionen, and its counterpart in the en-WP should receive a serious rework too. As said, just some ideas to keep you entertained for a while :). Best Regards, --Uwe 19:19, 31 July 2005 (UTC)
- Hello again, I've taken care of the style for the quotations. Essentially, straight quotation marks are to be used instead of the curved ones which are used in the German Wikipedia (see Wikipedia:Manual_of_Style#Quotation_marks). Then I changed the style regarding the ellipsis as well according to what can be found in the article which you provided on my talk page. So I assume that the quotations are correctly formatted now. Regarding citation style, I found the following statement on this page: Formatting of the reference list is a secondary detail, and there is currently no consensus on a precise prescribed citation format in Wikipedia. So I guess it is perfectly okay to leave it as it is now. And as the list of references ist rather short and the text of the article is uncontroversial, I think we don't need to add in-text references. Right now, I'm reading through the nomination process for the "featured article" category to find out how to nominate the article. Again, let me now when you think that the article is "ready" from your point of view. Best Regards, --Uwe 21:18, 31 July 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I am very much interested and would love to. Have marked Stasi on my watchlist. But please feel free to contact me with for any specific input. Also, Agent handling is an article were I have been attempting to write a generic view of the spy business, both Intellignce and Counterintelligence, globally, i.e., not just using CIA, KGB, Mossad MI6 methods and terminology. Marcel Junod
[edit]As for now, the article made it to the list of finalists in its category, which consists of four entries (down from seven nominations). Sort of a small reason to celebrate I guess, but let's still hope it goes for more. The results should be in later this evening, from what I understand. Jimbo's statement about the Wikipedia and the Red Cross made me smile, but I don't think that he was inspired by our discussion. From my point of view, the similarities are all too obvious if one takes a closer look. Would be interesting to know whether he has some involvement with or connection to the Red Cross (perhaps earlier in his life as a little boy or student or something like that). By the way, I once met him in real life at a Wikipedia meeting in Hamburg (the first one which I attended, and it was mainly because of Jimbo). Unfortunately I arrived late because I'm a terrible driver in large cities so I missed an opportunity to talk with him for more than a few moments. He had to leave early for another meeting next day. Based on our short conversation I would rate him as a top-notch bloke. From that meeting, I have his business card with his signature as kind of a souvenir :). We can only hope that he does not end up like Henry Dunant somewhere in the future. Best Regards (and keep your fingers crossed), --Uwe 18:50, 7 August 2005 (UTC) PS: do you know the original English version of his statement about the Wikipedia and the Red Cross?

Brazilian crisis
[edit]Hello my friend,
While we are discussing how to write about a current event, it is impossible to us not get involved and be parcial.
I think the real neutral point-of-view is actually the multiple point-of-view; I should say, the one which everyone desagrees a little.
Well, I'm no exception, indeed. For the sakeness of our discussion, I'm going to say what I think about all these things. Don't think I telling the pure truth; it is just a view of her.
First of all, I'm petista. I believe PT as a solution of this country, despite this crisis. Every decade or twenty years, we hava a chance to fix Brazil. In 1934, there was a new hope when a new liberal and democratic was passed. One year after, it was useless and suspended. In 1954 we had for the first time a labour, democratic, nationalist and popular government. Our strongest state company, Petrobras, have been created, the minimum wage was increased in 100%, there was a national policy. What did we do, then? A national campaign was set to support a coup against the president, and, finally, he killed himself: the only way to avoid the coup. We killed another opportunity. In 1964, our president with a fantastic popular support was reforming our country. He was deposed in a coup and we went through twenty years of dictatorship. In 1985, the dictatorship was falling again and a civil was elected. Finally Brazil would walk again by the path of democracy. He died in the hospital and his vice lead us to a terrible economic crisis.
Nowadays. The president is a man from the people, for the first time. He did things for this country nobody every did. Very important laws have been passed, the Minister of Labour is a sindicalist, there's a new plan for the Universities and finally, the conclusion of a one-century-old project for Brazilian Northeast.
But the most important than all of it is the democracy. In democracy, he would easily be relected in the next year (opposition has a weaker candidate, José Serra); but what we in Brazil are living is not a crisis, is a coup attempt. See Venezuela, 2002. Lula is not Chavez. However, the same characteristics of Venezuelan coup are seen here: a coordinated press campaign of general difamation. Press led the coup against Chavez. (from wikipedia's Pedro Carmona - a coup d'état by elements of the Venezuelan military, press, business community, and right-wing political parties against the leftist president). In Brazil, the same press is coordinating a general histery against Lula, even proposing an unbased impeachment. The final purpose is nothing but damage his chances of reelection.
I don't know what can you see outside. Lula - and even PT - have indeed popular support. Based on what I live, I dare say that the middle class dislike Lula. However, important social movements - such as Central Única dos Trabalhadores, Movimento dos Trabalhadores sem Terra and União Nacional dos Estudantes - keeps supporting Lula. Important polls showed that Lula's reelection is still a possibility.
Read a bit our journals, you'll see a clear tendencies of opposition, specially in Folha de São Paulo and even stronger in the biggest Brazilian magazine, Veja (remember what they did in Wikipedia?), which published a cover linking Lula to the impeached president Collor. There an immense ammount of accusations every day, which are forgotten in the next edition and leave space to another ammount of accusations.
About the scandal, I've written a lot in the scandal's talk page. I think there no sufficient proofs to warrant the existence of the cash-for-vote. Off-book accounting is widely disseminated in Brazilian elections, because elections are more expensive every year and there's no way to elect nobody without having money. How to prevent it? One can every two years arrest one thousand people or simply change the law, to prohibite every private money donation to parties in Brazil and create the public financy of the electoral expenses. There a project on it in the Congress. This is the unique solution.
What bother me is that the old dirty politicians from the last government (which had lot of scandals, from cash-for-vote in the reelection ammend vote in 1997 to simple corruption envolving Fernando's Cabinet chief, Eduardo Jorge) are becaming the new vestals of the moral. O mundo gira!
How shall wikipedia deal with it? I think that in the current circumstances, press like Veja cannot be considered a reliable source of information. We should appoint all the accusations (including those against the opposition), answers and possible explanations of the proofs. Futhermore, we cannot be future-seers. We must avoid to predict what will happen with Lula. Finally, we mustn't confuse public opinions neither with middle class opinionas nor with lower class opinions. There are many many people who believe in impeachment and there are people who believe in reelection. We must be careful.
Please, answer. I want to know what you think about that. I've send my e-mail and MSN to your e-mail. Let's talk.

Hi again
[edit]Just dropped in for a social "hello".
Hah -- you wish. :-)
Seriously, I've noticed you created the "municipalities of Stockholm county" template, which is a nice addition of course. The same probably needs to be done to all Swedish counties, but most municipality articles are still "under development" so there is no hurry.
I agree with your ideas about German wikipedia, and even find it amusing that they often have better coverage on Sweden than the Swedish wikipedia has. Their article about the Swedish welfare state is superb (de:Wohlfahrtsstaat_Schweden) , for example, and the article de:Schwedische_Architektur, all though not as academically correct, it still has no parallell article on other wikipedias -- so if you want something to translate... :-) . I think they resort to actual literature more often than Swedes, who prefer to write things of the top of their heads. But I suspect it has to do with the interest that Wikipedia has attracted in Germany -- and perhaps a German inherited snobbism about perfectionism of crafts (is this P.C.?! :-)
--Fred-Chess 07:51, August 17, 2005 (UTC)
PS you can respond here, I will monitor your page.
- Well, nothing's PC in the States. Let's just say that the Germans are very good and enthusiastic about organizing information. Very methodical... When I lived there for a few months, I was amazed at the multiple and detailed atlases/year-end-reviews for sale. And a date book I bought there was incredible. Not only did it have the usual things like metric conversion and time zones, etc. But it had food recipes, the times when different flowers would appear, morse code, and every street sign you will ever see in your life!
- I see you are from Malmö; sadly, when I went to Sweden for 2 weeks two years ago, I didn't really get to travel around much. I mostly stayed in Uppsala where my father was on sabbatical. Tfine80 17:52, 17 August 2005 (UTC)
- Yep, in Malmö. That's quite a bit to travel anyways, at least 5 hours by train/car. I'd prefer looking at the various sights in Stockholm, and then sights in Stockholm County and around lake Mälaren, such as Drottningholm, Birka and Sigtuna and the pride of stockholm the Stockholm archipelago; then watch a game of soccer maybe by the team AIK and go to the televisioned group singing Allsång på Skansen.
- But anyways, would the german article about the welfare system interest you? I haven't read it, but think it is fundamental for understanding Sweden of today. --Fred-Chess 10:32, August 18, 2005 (UTC)
- Sure, I think I can translate that article. I agree that it is important. What's amazing is that there doesn't seem to be a standard for these types of articles yet. The article welfare is a mess. And welfare system itself has no clear redirect... I guess the title should be Welfare system of Sweden and the standard should always be Welfare system of Spain, Welfare system of the United States, etc.... Fascinating that no one has standardized this yet because these systems are often very complicated and significant/expensive. Tfine80 16:47, 18 August 2005 (UTC)

[edit]I looked back through the Anti-American sentiment history and noticed you had undertaken most of the major changes which have improved a page I had sort of given up on. A barnstar for you! Marskell 15:57, 18 August 2005 (UTC)
Template:Stadtteile of Frankfurt am Main and Category:Stadtteile of Frankfurt
[edit]First, why did you rename {{Districts of Frankfurt am Main}} to "Stadtteile of Frankfurt am Main"? Please see Wikipedia:Naming_conventions#Use_English_words. The original template name was in English. Now, it's in German. Do you have an explanation for this move that overrides the naming convention considerations?
Second, I've placed Category:Stadtteile of Frankfurt for Category for Renaming to Category:Districts of Frankfurt per naming conventions.
Please understand; I'm not trying to be hostile towards you. I just want to understand why you are moving things to German words instead of keeping them in English per the naming conventions. --Durin 15:08, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
- With all due respect, your rationalization for the rename fails. I do not know German, except for a very few words. I look at words such as "Stadtbezirke" and "Ortsteil" and I have not the slightest idea what is being referred to. The use of a German word for such descriptions adds nothing of value to Wikipedia. If there is no English equivalent, then I would suggest you come up with another solution that does not require the use of a German word to explain it, since the use of a German word doesn't explain it to people who do not know German.
- Yes, this means that some concepts may be lost in translation from de.wikipedia.org to en.wikipedia.org; such are the perils of translation. Rather than attempt to force structures using German words, model similar city structures in English speaking nations such as United Kingdom and Australia. Might I suggest having a look at London Borough of Barking and Dagenham, Category:Districts of London, {{London}} and Greater London as a model you might use instead.
- Can we please agree to move the template name back to its original form and to use English language structures for German cities/suburbs? --Durin 15:30, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
- It's probably a good idea to get a vote on the naming schema in front of the Wikiproject. But, keep in mind that now that the category is up for renaming there will be others who will see the various problems this has induced and may work on the articles with no regard to what the wikiproject decides. As for me joining the project, I'll politely decline. Outside of World War II history, I know next to nothing about Frankfurt. Thank you for the invite! --Durin 15:45, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
- Re: renaming; I was just going by the edit summaries at [1].--Durin 15:48, 19 August 2005 (UTC)
AA
[edit]I reverted my changes. Actually, anyone can use Move which I knew but wasn't thinking of. Unfortunately, Anti-Americanism now has an edit history so I can't move Anti-American sentiment to it. If you can delete Anti-Americanism and then make the move please do or else I guess we put it on redirects for deletion and wait. The upshot of this is: don't edit Wiki after the bar ;). Marskell 06:24, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
- Sorry to bother you again. Can you make the delete and the move quickly or should I post the page (Requested moves rather than Redirects for Deletion, I guess)? Sorry if the various redirects are a mess. Marskell 22:13, 25 August 2005 (UTC)
International Day of the Disappeared
[edit]Hi there, long time no see. I hope all is well for you. Let me say that I'm immensely sorry for those who are affected by the hurricane Katrina, especially the city of New Orleans and its inhabitants. I visited the city in 2003 and absolutely loved its vibrant style of living. I'm so depressed to see this wonderful city nearly completely sunk. And let me add that I enormously despise our German secretary of the environment Jürgen Trittin about his totally insensitive comments. To be honest, I wasn't a fan of him before, my nickname for him has been Jürgen "Tritt ihn" for a number of reasons (among them his insane policy on the use of nuclear energy which he forced through, and his stance on GMO). Given your excellent command of the German language I'm sure you will see the pun of that nickname.
The reason for contacting you this time is that I translated one of my new German articles, see International Day of the Disappeared. It would be nice if you could take a look and do the necessary changes to transform it from a text translated by a foreigner to native language. Apart from that, we should also finalize our translation of the article about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement in the near future to finally include it in the English Wikipedia. Best Regards, --Uwe 19:07, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
Addendum: an urgent translation request :o). Could you prepare an English translation of de:Denkmal für die kanadischen Entwicklungs- und Aufbauhelfer? I sort of promised an English translation to one of the organizations involved with the monument (PATH Canada) in exchange for a picture (which I got from them in the meantime). The article is not that long, so if you have the time to do a speedy and perfect translation (without the detour of an imperfect one by me) I would highly appreciate it! --Uwe 19:20, 31 August 2005 (UTC)
- Thank you very much for your translation of the article about the Canadian monument. Once again wonderful work. As a side note, if you have the article about Marcel Junod on your watchlist you will notice some small changes. I exchanged emails with his son yesterday and today and he took a closer look on the English translation. All of the changes are the result of that exchange. There are two new pieces of information - the Medal of Liberty in 1946 which he was prevented from receiving due to Swiss law, and his home town has finally decided to erect a monument too (both to be found in the last part of the article). His son will try to take a picture of the new monument during the inauguration and send it to me for the articles. I also hope to receive a French translation of the article from him. --Uwe 12:41, 5 September 2005 (UTC)
Wokers Party censor in Brazilian vote-for-cash scandal
[edit]Hello! I am a Brazilian. I would like to say that I agree with your critics about the pov tag in Brazilian vote-for-cash scandal article. Unfortunatly, it seems that a member from the Wokers Party is trying to censor the article, or something like that. I respect every point of view, however I dont agree when one person is using the freedom in Wikipedia to work against the freedom. I would not protest if I didn't think that it is a very immature behavior and because of that the article will be very damaged. I can accept even a small bias for left or Anti-american. However I dont agree when someone tries to hide the truth, after you have a lot of substantial material. I dont see too much difference in this behavior and in the censorship which is did by China in some articles from Wikipedia.
If you have some doubt about the Brazilian scandal I suggest you do a research across some articles that international media is publishing.
How do we deal with this situation in Wikipedia?--Carlosar 01:59, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
I cannot see how an article can be pov, if it is a perfect description of a fact and this fact is described almost in the same way by other important media.
Also, there is not a single pov tag in the Portuguese article. And Brazil is one of the most anti-American and left countries in Latin America. --Carlosar 02:03, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
Read the article: Brazilian Vote Buying parliamentary commission present first joint preliminary report
And read the sources from the article. --Carlosar 02:08, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
It seems you know Portuguese. I suggest you take a look here
Also you can check here. --Carlosar 02:08, 6 September 2005 (UTC)
IR
[edit]Thanks for the attention =).
If it becomes controversial, I´m totally open to discussion on the talk page of Template:IR. I´m updating the template now and then, as well.
As for alphabetical listing, I find first names first much less confusing, specially considerding Thucydides and Machiavelli are listed with a single name.

Francophobia
[edit]Now I haven't forgotten your caution against creating a lot of potential soapbox Anti-x sentiment articles but I did feel Francophobia was justified and it was officially added today. Curious your opinion.
There should almost be a category for this now though some of it is dubious: Anti-Americanism, Anti-Australian sentiment (which I don't agree belongs), Anti-Polonism (which is totally a neologism and doesn't belong), Francophobia and the poorly filled out Anglophobia. Marskell 15:06, 8 September 2005 (UTC)
Category
[edit]It is not that controversial, Category:Road accident victims isn´t it either. To every category, there is a list of people about the subject. So this is no problem --ThomasK 05:20, September 10, 2005 (UTC)
Yes, because just one category would be by far too large. --ThomasK 05:34, September 10, 2005 (UTC)
Plane crash victims
[edit]Saw you adding this category to some pages.
There is also one called Fatally crashed aviators. Shouldn't they be merged, or atleast this made a sub-cat of the former ? Tintin 05:52, 10 September 2005 (UTC)

Brazilian article
[edit]Please, take a look: User:Carlosar/draft. Thank you. --Carlosar 13:32, 13 September 2005 (UTC)
Take another look: User:Carlosar/draft. --Carlosar 13:38, 14 September 2005 (UTC)
I'm glad you like ...
[edit]... my article on Aida (café). If there is anything you think I could do to improve an article please let me know. Actually, I could go on forever writing articles for Wikipedia. However, as far as cafés are concerned, I think I have more or less run out of material, but I haven't really given it a thought.
What you have written seems to imply that you have never been to Vienna. How come you know such a lot about Viennese cafés?
Have a nice weekend, <KF> 21:53, 16 September 2005 (UTC)
Pictures for the Red Cross article
[edit]Hi there, I've started to move pictures from the de-WP to the Commons and to add them to the article about the International Red Cross and Red Crescent movement. It's kinda tedious work because I have to keep the version history for GFDL-licensed pictures, and because I decided that it might be a good idea to add English as well as German descriptions to the pictures in the Commons. I've already added three of them to the article, and will include those which are missing in the near future. Just to let you now. --Uwe 21:14, 17 September 2005 (UTC)
nope - eliot
[edit]nope, I'm a sophomore in Eliot. I just was looking at the Lowell page, and thought the caption on the Lowell tower picture was a bit excessive. --jacobolus (t) 21:24, 26 September 2005 (UTC)
Langs on the main page
[edit]Thanks a lot for the heads up. Removing those links would be a travesty! Raul (and others who take up these debates) could do to spend more time talking to real interface designers, or getting real survey data on what our userbase looks like and what they find useful -- to help make the main page awesome, rather than trying to tweak it in small ways that may or may not be helpful. +sj + 20:30, 27 September 2005 (UTC)
