Hi Te Karere - re this - why did you add a "citation required", when there is a citation for this, at the end of the following sentence? Citations aren't generally repeated in paragraphs - if several facts of a paragraph are given in the same citation, iot goes at the end of the paragraph. Grutness...wha? 06:36, 26 December 2011 (UTC)
- Hi Grutness - I'm sorry about my lack of understanding about the Wikipedia citation policy; I didn't know a citation at the end of a paragraph could apply equally across the paragraph. I have found some alternative sources on Google scholar that discuss manaia and the finger issue in particular, but need to login through my work after the holiday period, as they have to be accessed via a database. FYI, the maori.info source is very, very similar to Te Ara, with the latter having a discussion on the meaning of three-fingered figures in Polynesian carving under the first section "The Human Figure". This section discounts the idea that the number of fingers has meaning. It maybe I'll find better sources later.
- On a related issue, why do you use "distorted" versus "altered"? " Distortion" has a specific meaning in Wikipedia. I am unsure the changes enacted in manaia could be termed "unwanted", and no attempts are made to "minimize it in practice". " Alteration" denotes a change without identifying the motivation, thus presenting a more neutral noun. - I use distorted because that is exactly what is done to the shape of the Manaia. "Altered" implies that some of the features of the manaia are removed and others are added - distorted more clearly gets across the point that the figure is still complete, but is changed in shape to fill the necessary gap. These are fairly standard meanings of altered and distorted in the world of art and design. As to the meanings or otherwise of the fingers, if you can find some source which says they don't have any specific meaning,t hat's fine (though it's probably worth a footnote to say that some sources suggest that they have specific meanings). New Challenge for Oceania and Australia
[edit]Hi, Wikipedia:WikiProject Oceania/The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Australia/The 5000 Challenge are up and running based on Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge which has currently produced over 2300 article improvements and creations. The Australia challenge would feed into the wider region one and potentially New Zealand could have a smaller challenge too. The main goal is content improvement, tackling stale old stubs and important content and improving sourcing/making more consistent but new articles are also welcome if sourced. I understand that this is a big goal for regular editors, especially being summertime where you are, but if you'd like to see large scale quality improvements happening for Oceania and Australia like The Africa Destubathon, which has produced over 1700 articles in 5 weeks, sign up on the page. The idea will be an ongoing national editathon/challenge for the region but fuelled by a series of contests to really get articles on every province and subject mass improved. The Africa contest scaled worldwide would naturally provide great benefits to Oceania countries, particularly Australia and attract new editors. I would like some support from existing editors here to get the Challenges off to a start with some articles to make doing a Destubathon worthwhile and potentially bring about hundreds of improvements in a few weeks through a contest! ESEAP Conference

Scholarship applications for ESEAP Conference 2018 is now open!
ESEAP Conference 2018 is a regional conference for Wikimedia communities around the ESEAP regions. ESEAP stands for East, Southeast Asia, and Pacific. Taking place in Bali, Indonesia on 5-6 May 2018, this is the first regional conference for the Wikimedia communities around the regions.
Full scholarships are subject to quotas, maximum two people per country and your country is eligible to apply, visit this page.
We also accept submissions of several formats, including:
- Workshop & Tutorial: these are presentations with a focus on practical work directed either to acquiring a specific skill or doing a specific task. Sessions are 55 minutes led by the presenters in a classroom space suitable for laptops and work.
- Posters: A2-size format to give news, share your community event/program, set out an idea, propose a concept, or explain a problem. The poster itself must be uploaded to Wikimedia Commons with a suitable license.
- Short Presentation/Sharing talks: 10-15 minutes presentation on certain topic.
Deadline for submissions and scholarship applications is on 15 March 2018. If you have any question, don't hesitate to contact me or send your e-mail to eseap@wikimedia.or.id.

I've just let loose a bit of a rant on Talk:East Timor, perhaps my arguments hold too much weight (hhahaha) and we should have a new Timor_Leste page if it wasn't already merged, it seems so silly... East Timor could be argued wasn't ever a country even for 9 days way back in 1975 before it was repatriated by Indonesia and became a province or territory or what not even during the wars... there is and basically never has been a country known as East Timor so we should be easily able to refute most of the arguments here on Wiki of people "arguing what? should keep be named what?"-- damn I'm doing it again here sorry. - @Tymes: - Hi! Thanks for the message. I'm not here often (thesis writing), but appreciate the contact. Timor_Leste is currently a redirect. It is unclear why the page was moved. I could not find out any information in the East Timor Talk archive. The Timor Leste Talk page was deleted in 2007. You could contact the user DerHexer to find out why. If no move request was processed, there is an argument for deleting the redirect. The redirect might cause confusion for those seeking current and historical information about Timor Leste (versus historical information about East Timor). The answer under that circumstance is per WP:RFD: "if you want to replace an unprotected redirect with an article, you do not need to list it ....
