This talk page is intended for discussion of the changes proposed to the WikiProject Children's Literature main page, which are summarised below. Please leave any comments about sub-pages here so that all discussion is in one place. This page also contains some reminders about edits needing to be made before the changes can be implemented - please ignore these. These changes have now been implemented, please do not add to the discussion here.

Summary of Proposed Changes

The proposals for the new project page cover the following changes:

  1. Reorganisation of content, including some updates and rewrites, at the existing pages WP:WikiProject Children's literature, WP:WikiProject Children's literature/Assessment and WP:WikiProject Children's literature/Participants. The proposed versions of these pages can be found at User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project, User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Assessment and User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Participants respectively.
  2. The creation of new departments for Collaboration, Project Discussion and Article Discussion (see next item).
  3. The creation of the following new pages at their corresponding WikiProject locations:
    1. User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Collaboration to deal with collaboration on articles.
    2. User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Templates to give information on project templates.
    3. User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Article Discussion for article discussions such as notability concerns and BLP updates.
    4. User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/Project Discussion for discussions of changes to project policy and organisation.
    5. User:Strdst grl/sandbox/project/WPCHL, a project navigation template to be added to all project pages.
  4. Movement of the archived discussions WP:WikiProject Children's literature/categories and WP:WikiProject Children's literature/youngadult in the style of WP:WikiProject Children's literature/Project Discussion/categories, in order to bring them under the heirarchy of the new Project Discussion page.
  5. The use of <div> templates to hide some long sections of the main project page unless they are needed.

I think that all looks very good. May I suggest that the "Articles for Discussion" sub-page would be the appropriate place for a sub-section on BLPs? While many of the issues are similar to issues on all articles, there are some which are peculiar to BLPs and the source of the heated debates about the deletion process. There are a number of proposals being discussed and, my reading of this is that they may have a separate PROD process. May I also suggest that we provide links to some of the commonly used editing templates (such as "clean-up" and "references"). As a newbie, I recall finding my way round the various pages about references tortuous and I think it might be helpful to offer some links to the less daunting pages. Resources: Notability: Authors

Could we say something like this?:

  • There are particular issues and concerns around biographies of living people on Wikipedia and it is important that the guidelines and policies are followed carefully when creating these articles. Please see (link to BLP guidelines, which I will draft) Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. NB this note could come after the Notability list if preferred

Actually decided that I can't improve on the intro to the existing WP:BLP page and so propose that we just link there and have amended my suggested text above accordingly. Resources: Adding references: suggestion

One of the key elements of a good Wikipedia article is the presence of reliable references to support the facts in the article. The technique for adding references can seem daunting at first, until you get used to the concept. There are several pages of help in Wikipedia on this subject. Here are three of the most useful:

Resources: Uploading images: suggested text

Wikipedia articles are often improved by the addition of images. These can be author photos, book covers or other relevant images used to support the text of an article. There are strict rules about the permissions needed before an image can be uploaded to Wikipedia which must be followed. New Article Alerts

I've just discovered this bot User:AlexNewArtBot which generates an automatic daily listing of newly created articles which may fall into a specific category or area. I've just been through the existing "Wikipedia:WikiProject Children" list and found a number of new articles on children's books or authors. I've tagged some of them, added references and "multiple issues" templates to a couple and left a message for the editor User talk:Mhjohns who has just created a number of single line articles for a raft of Newbery Honor Books. The "Wikipedia:WikiProject Children" (which seems to be a dead project) parameters capture too wide a range (child sportsmen/women, general articles about children) but I think the concept is a good one, if we can get an alert run on more narrow parameters to do with this project. Our current Article Alert subscription covers a number of useful things but not the creation of new pages which might fall into our remit. If you think we would find this useful, I'm willing to explore it further.
