Hey. I'm the guy who wrote most of the content at the 'Yaghan Language' page. Couple of things. First, if you know how to do these things, the title should read Yahgan, not Yaghan. I don't know who first put together the page initially, but the -gh- is completely nonstandard- NOBODY in the academic world spells it this way, if they've done any real research at all on the people or language. The word itself was coined by an English missionary, Thomas Bridges, after the name of a local strait in the center of the native territory, called Yahga-shaga, lit. 'Yahga Strait'. He was the one who chose the spelling, where the -ah- was meant to convey a 'long' a, as in English phonetics, and has NOTHING to do with the following g. As there were Italians on some late 19th century expeditions who wrote about their adventure, I'm guessing that some editor must have made a decision that the -hg- was a typographical error for Italian -gh-. On the other hand, the Spanish spelling is Yagan, and the -g- is pronounced as a voiced velar fricative, so somewhat similar to the -gh- in Italian. Since Latin America ain't Italian-speaking (maybe Italian Argentines were the cause?), and English and Spanish speakers really were the only two Europeans to have extensive dealings with these people, the name should be changed to reflect one or the other. And since this IS the English language Wiki, it should go with the original English spelling.

Second point- the vocabulary you added to the page perhaps needs some edits- sometimes these online pages get things wrong. For example, palena isn't rain. Rain is more like belaka, bvlaka (v schwa) with pelaka, pvlaka devoiced (the current trend), sky wa:gun, not -ul, again without voicing wakun- the -un is locative, and this term seems etymologically related to the terms fóka, háokà for 'cloud'. Bay, inlet ushipin is interesting- ushsha relates to the head of a bay, up a creek, back end of a cave, etc. But -ipin? Maybe from -u:pai 'towards, in the direction of' plus following -n locative?

Also  

yasála, jesæla sáeskin, sæskin pusáki There are some phonological environments where there is ambiguity between sh and s, and I've seen reports of switching in other environments relative to what was put down in the Yahga Straits dialect. So maybe ok, but yvshvla/yeshela for dog was the 19th C. general spelling, and pushaki for fire. svskin, siskin had an alternate shishkin.

Lastly, there are now online a number of original documents in Yahgan- texts, grammatical treatments, etc. Heck, even the dictionary may be online soon. So do you think these would make good links on the page?

Proto Tibeto-Burman

The issue for me is that I do not think it is write to present Matisoff 2003 as 'proto-Tibeto-Burman' that book is merely the opinions of one man. And if you read the reviews of the book you will see that they are generally controversial and not well supported opinions. My issue with the 'sound change' section is that normally in historical linguistics a sound change is a change from something specific into something else specific, like 'Grimm's law'. Simply saying that clusters simplify, then turn to glottal stops, then turn to nothing, is either so obvious it means nothing or is a religious belief about what is inevitable. Fair enough, lets go with 'sound patterns' or perhaps something like 'typological tendencies in historical phonology'. I apologize for having come down a bit hard on a young article. As you have gathered I am not a big Matisoff fan. Unfortunately there is not much else out there on proto-Tibeto-Burman. I would however strongly recommend the works of Gong Hwang-Cherng (who calls the proto-language Sino-Tibetan). Gong's complete works on 'Sino-Tibetan' were collected as a nice volume in 2002(?), I could get you a copy if you like. Tibetologist (talk) 21:57, 14 December 2010 (UTC)

Hi, I'm Claudi Balaguer (User Capsot from the Catalan Viquipèdia and Occitan Wikiccionari). First of all Happy New Year, I wish you and your family all the best for 2011 and that the minorized and endangered languages will be able to survive and grow as long as possible. I hope you will forgive this intrusion. I have noticed while leaving messages to GerardM. in Meta that you seem to show a keen interest on languages, supporting some of them to get out of the incubator, so I though that you would appreciate to know what our association will plan to do in March. The Catalan Viquipèdia will be celebrating its 10th birthday soon (http://ca.wikipedia.org/wiki/Viquip%C3%A8dia:10_anys_de_la_Viquip%C3%A8dia) and we are planning to have some sessions directed towards getting some wikipedias out of the incubator and we would really appreciate at least your advice, at best your participation (though I guess Europe might be a bit far... as is America to me right now...): http://meta.wikimedia.org/wiki/Teamwork_of_projects_in_languages_with_singular_status. Could you tell me where Younuo and Wunai are found in Ratliff (2010)? I don't have access. Could you also confirm which ISO codes correspond to her Hmong? And does she present that as one language, or as a branch of Hmongic which is just not illustrated at Hmongic languages? I'm trying to straighten out the confusion over what "Hmong" and "Miao" are in our articles.

Copy and paste moves

Please don't copy and past an article to another name, as you did with Ta’Oi language. When you do that, the page is separated from its history. ISO codes

Hi,

I'm wondering why you would say there is no ISO code in several articles you created, when there is. Min Zhuang language, for example, which you note was first described in SIL, and so should recognize in Ethnologue (they have the same refs you do). Also listing the name of the language twice in the info box (Min Zhuang, AKA Min Zhuang) is redundant. — kwami (talk) 16:18, 1 March 2012 (UTC)

Zhuang languages

I have appreciated many of your contributions. However a number of your recent edits to the Zhuang languages page seem incorrect. For example making Dejing Zhuang and Yang Zhuang the same. The 13 'dialects' given represent the divisions of the 1950's and 1970's surveys summarised in Zhang (1999). However the Ethnologue divisions are based on later surveys and in a number of cases divide Zhuang up into dialects quite differently. Would you mind looking over the links for the last three and checking to see if the same thing is being talked about.Thank-youJohnkn63 (talk) 07:24, 3 March 2012 (UTC)
