You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Michael Joy requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please read more about what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, and you wish to retrieve the deleted material for future reference or improvement, you can place a request here. gsk 21:55, 12 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Help request

[edit]

I don't understand why this page is being deleted. I read all of the articles that you posted and really focused and put effort into doing this the correct way. Michael Joy is a big name in the culinary industry, completely changing the way many chefs compete as well as giving them the freedom to express their creativity in the kitchen through his molds. For this reason alone, I think that this article is important enough to be encyclopedic. It has not been written by anyone else and all of the information is verifiable. What can I do to help keep this page active and prevent it from being deleted? Snow46 (talk) 14:04, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Snow46. The article has already been deleted at the time of writing, but if you want I can restore it to your userspace so that you can continue working on it. The main reason it was deleted was that it completely lacked any references to independent sources that talked about Joy - you had used his own website and that of his school extensively, but nothing else that mentioned him. The guideline for establishing notability is quite long, but boils down to this: all articles must be supported by significant coverage in multiple, reliable, independent sources. If you can locate such sources to support the inclusion of an article about Joy in Wikipedia, then your article will not be deleted.
Let me know if you want the page restored to your userpace, although to be honest you might be better off working from scratch - collect your sources first, and then report what they say (not what Michael Joy wants them to say). However, it's up to you; drop me a line if you want me to userfy it. Yunshui  15:05, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Scratch that; I hadn't realise you'd already got a copy on your userpage. Yunshui  15:07, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Snow, I would be happy to help you with this article. Yunshui got to the help request before I could, and I was going to suggest the same thing. I think he is notable enough for inclusion, but we need to find better references. I will look at the page in your user space, and offer more specific help there. Also feel free to contact me on my user talk page if you have any other questions. I really wish I hade gotten to it before the speedy delete was acted on, as I would have liked to protest it as improvable. But this will work. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 17:58, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bill, thank you so much for your message and willingness to help me. I'm gathering some more sources as we speak, which I hope will contribute to this article. Snow46 (talk)
I'm also moving the article off your main user page, so don't be surprised if you go there and just find a link to the new article. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 18:17, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

New Michael Joy page

[edit]

Snow46: Please be sure to check out the new page and the talk page associated with it where we can work on the article. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 22:08, 13 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bill W: Please look over the edits that I've made to the article and let me know if I'm on the right track for "publishing" the article. —    Snow 46.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 10:11, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry I haven't had time to look at the page lately, I've been tied up with other things. Also I'm flattered that you have made your signature like mine, but you may want to select some different colors to make it more your own. Here's a great color picker site: http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp
I'll try to get time today or tomorrow to give you some more detailed feedback on the page. One thing I can say for sure, is that you should not use any references at all that are books, web sites, or organizations that are owned or controlled or founded by the subject of the article. None at all. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 15:45, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article is finished with a new photo added. If you could please look over it or tell me how I can make it public that would be great. Thanks again for all of your help! Snow46 (talk)

Image of Michael Joy

[edit]

Hi Snow, Your image is marked for speedy deletion due to copyright issues. The image is taken from a web site which has a standard copyright notice. Wikipedia views that as superseding any copyright information provided at the time of upload to Wikipedia. I don't have time to write more right now, but you can read WP:Non-free content and WP:COPYVIO and follow some of the links there for more information. The copyright warning notice on the image page also has pertinent links. More later. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 20:18, 20 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bill W, I found another image and uploaded it without any copyright issues. I'm new to Wikipedia and didn't understand all of the lingo and requirements at first. But, this image was found and uploaded with all of Wiki's requirements met. Snow46 (talk)
It looks good. Now you'll want to add an Infobox. I would suggest Template:Infobox chef but you may find another one you prefer at this link: WP:List of infoboxes#Other person. This will help maintain the encyclopedic appearance of the article, and give the photo a place to live other than just floating on the page. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 15:09, 25 March 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Bill W, Thank you for providing the template. I made it as applicable to Michael Joy as possible and I think it looks much better than a floating image. If everything is ready to go, please let me know how to make it public. Thanks again for all of your help! I really appreciate it! Snow46 (talk)

Bill W, now that the Infobox is added, I'm hoping that the article is ready to go public without any complications. Can you please let me know how to do this?Snow46 (talk)

I'll look at it today and let you know. I suspect there are still some sourcing issues, but I will review soon. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 15:25, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I removed the "Career" section since A) the information is already in the "Life" section, and B) it makes the article look too much like a resume. Per the Wikipedia Manual of Style we should be sure to have an encyclopedic appearance. Which brings me to my second point. The "Projects" section needs to be re-written as prose instead of as a list. I have added the appropriate tag which has a link that might help. Once again this list makes the article look like a resume. Let's try to fix these things and see what happens. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 15:49, 2 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Bill W, I made the changes that you suggested and wrote the Projects section as a paragraph/prose rather than as a list. Please let me know if the changes will suffice. Thanks!Snow46 (talk)
Bill W Just wanted to check in to see if you the article is ready to post live. Again, I made the changes that you suggested and am hopeful that they will work. Thanks!Snow46 (talk)
I would say that you can submit it to AFC and see what they say. I don't generally work in the AFC area, so I'd like to see what they think. —    Bill W.    (Talk)  (Contrib)  — 21:50, 16 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]
