When an article is finished...

Regarding my post on the proposals page, or more specifically, your reply to it (thanks), involving the Reviewed article version and Article validation feature links you gave: I want to ask whether if I just leave it, this feature will come about by itself in the course of time? I'd rather spend time on science articles than getting bogged down in Wikipedia itself and would like to rest (or work), assured that this "problem" will be taken care of without my input. I'd say that's reasonably correct. According to Brion, Wikimedia's CTO, a MediaWiki development team has been assigned exclusively to implementing stable revisions. If you want to provide input, it's welcome, of course; the best place to watch for developments would probably be some of the mailing lists, particularly wikipedia-l and wikitech-l. --Slowking Man 09:13, 11 February 2007 (UTC)

No, as randomly reverting articles would be vandalism. There are also measures such as the three-revert rule, and in the case of edit wars, pages can be protected. However, from his edit summary, he obviously had issues with some of the article's content, and he performed a single reversion. The edit was made in good faith, so it is certainly not vandalism; "any good-faith effort to improve the encyclopedia, even if misguided or ill-considered, is not vandalism." If you disagree with his edit, discuss it with him and other editors. --Slowking Man 08:09, 1 March 2007 (UTC)

If you believe you have an intractable problem with a user, then you may wish to consider the dispute resolution process. It's often a good idea to try to see things from the other person's point of view; perhaps the dispute isn't as serious as you think it is. Linens 'n' Things

Hi,

It looks like this is probably a subject that could be notable. Bear in mind that I was deleting the verison that had been tagged, not the subject. If you remove what was basically advertising, all there was: "Linens 'n Things is a chain of bath, bed, and other accessory stores in the United States and Canada. Its corporate headquarters is located in Clifton, New Jersey." As far as I could tell, that's not really worth keeping as an article, so I deleted. List of experiments from Lilo & Stitch PROD

I removed the proposed deletion you endorsed for the reasons listed here. I know that certain parts of the article are a disaster. Disney didn't help matters with the last movie as it just screams filling in OR. Lots of what I believe are kids are "helping" the article, too. I've been trying to keep some semblance of a proper article there, but it's been a long battle and to be honest, I'm getting rather tired of fighting the battle. That's good to hear. Regarding Pennsylvania Route 65, I believe the GA reviewer meant that the given sources are mostly from unoffical websites that aggregrate content. Reliable sources, in the context of this article, would be things such as publications by the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, American Automobile Association, things like that. Teritary sources should be avoided in articles. Wikipedia:Attribution explains this fairly well, I think (although don't hesistate to ask me any questions). --Slowking Man 02:39, 10 March 2007 (UTC)

Response for Semiprotect offer

I appreciate the offer, but I think I'll pass on it. It's a result of the whole RC Patrol thing, and much of the vandalism comes from registered users (vandal accounts, sure, but still registered), so the semiprotect wouldn't help much anyway. Deletion of Newly Created Entry

I am new at creating entries into Wikipedia, however, I believe my entry for Mr. Coyne is valid. There are many other current entries in Wikipedia regarding other "similar" individuals/academics/authors who have been valid entries for some time. Only a few examples of this very long list are Mr. Tom Peters, Mr. Gary Hamel, Mr. Thomas H. Davenport, Mr. Clayton M. Christensen--to name only a few. I have done quite a bit of research before adding Mr. Coyne's entry. The article, as it was, read like a promotional directory entry or résumé. Information on Wikipedia should be attributed to reliable sources and written from a neutral point of view. I don't think there's a problem with having an article on him—he seems notable enough—but articles need to conform to the project's standards. Hans Reiser article protect

I was thinking about this, but I think that it may be a mistake. We just have the one vandal, not legions of them; he's done something else a few days ago, but stopped. They don't appear all that violently persistent. And while I think the edits today are a serious problem on several levels, it's not that it's vandalism per se, it's inappropriate content for the article.

I'm not going to unprotect it, or shift it to sprotected (which I was also thinking about), but it might be good to think about it a bit before leaving it with protection on...

Soft blocking TOR proxies

Please don't unblock hard blocks on TOR proxies, and re-block them as soft blocks. I've had to re-block one TOR proxy that you had unblocked and soft-blocked, because it was doing some very nasty stuff. TOR proxies need to be hard blocked. I often find new accounts doing something fairly awful, and discover that their IPs are TOR proxies. It happens all the time. It turns out that it is trivially easy for an editor to get a new account name by finding some unblocked TOR proxy; once they do so, the full range of TOR proxies become useable by them. I wish there weren't vandals, but there are, and they're often extremely nasty. TOR proxies don't get special treatment; like all proxies, they are hard blocked. I appreciate your intentions. However, subjects of Wikipedia articles must be notable, and have multiple verifiable sources available for information to be drawn from. Unfortunately, the article you created appears to be based on original research, which is not permitted on Wikipedia. Also, you appear to be involved with the company, which means you have a conflict of interest. My advice would be to refrain from creating articles about subjects you may have a bias towards; if the subject is notable, another editor will write about it. I'm sorry, but the article you linked to is a press release by the company that created the technology, which would be an unacceptable source; the attribution FAQ and page about spam explain this in more detail. The basic point is that there need to be multiple independent sources from which to draw information for an article. The example you gave, charcoal, is clearly notable, as there are numerous independent works about charcoal: newspaper articles, books, television programs, and so on. --Slowking Man 08:37, 7 April 2007 (UTC)

Block on .info in #wikipedia

Protecting against vandalism

Hi, I was wondering how one goes about having a page protected from rampant anonymous vandalism. A page I help edit, Strabane, has suffered a lot of late from anonymous vandals. There's a page specifically for such requests, although you can ask any admin personally as well. As for Strabane, it looks like there's been a bit of vandalism recently, but not anything that looks like it requires protection, which is generally only used for very high levels of vandalism (every few minutes or so). Sockpuppets you blocked: How should I have reported it?

Quick question. You just blocked User:Rindle and User:Psychostylee for sockpuppetry. Cool. I noticed it a few minutes before you blocked them, and was futzing around trying to figure out where to report it. Is WP:SSP really the right place? Seems pretty bureaucratic for such an obvious case. WP:AIV? Something else? Did someone report it, or did you just notice it by constantly removing the page? For this case of patently obvious vandalism, AIV should be fine (or ask an admin individually). I noticed it by looking at the deleted histories of Marquezo and Atronefo, which were created by one account and then recreated by the other. I've got their IP range too, so I can block it if needed. OK it is to late now to lie I am pursuing an internship at KNEIP. But is conflict of interest a crime as such (I am doing an internship and will leave the company in 2 months so actually I do not care personnaly)? I tried to take pure promotional or advertisement content out of my page. KNEIP actually is an important actor of the Luxembourg fund industry: 3i recently invested 37 m in it (this was in my second version of the page), it created a profit association (IMS Luxembourg) aimed at promoting corporate social responsibility, and all big banks are its clients (JPMorgan, Citigroup, ....),  : is it not sufficient to consider it notable and write an article about it? Well, no, it's not a "crime." However, Wikipedia's policies advise against making substantial edits in subjects where one has a conflict of interest, as it is often difficult to edit neutrally in such cases. It does sound as if the company may be notable, but I would suggest allowing someone else to create an article on it. If you have some reliable sources for information on the company, I'd be interested in seeing them; I might take a stab at beginning an article on the company. --Slowking Man 16:35, 13 June 2007 (UTC)

I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

Thanks for protecting my page tonight. However, would you mind removing it tommorow after whatever is going on blows over. I subscribe to DerHexer's view that if a vandal is hitting my page, that's a good thing. It means that they aren't off vandalizing a legitimate article. Thank you again!
