Welcome!

"In any case, I hope you enjoy editing here and being a Wikipedian! "

I don't enjoy editing pages, I do it out of pedantism.

I hate it when people revert my edits and make information incorrect again. How can I stop that ?

I have an account - I've forgotten the login details. This was the last site that ever happened (accidentally) !!!!!!! Who to contact to recover the account ? RSVP by e-mail: pmailkeey@ gee mail.com — Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.225.2.251 (talk)

Hello! To recover an account, Special:PasswordReset should do the trick. Depending on what your account settings were, if you have forgotten your username, you should only need to give the email. If that doesn't work, review this help page about what options are available to you.
Regarding others posting wrong information, note that Wikipedia is an encyclopedia that anyone can use, edit, and distribute. If you have made an edit, and it has been reverted, it's encouraged you contact said editor and attempt to reach consensus. You may face disciplinary actions from administrators if you enter an editting war with users in an attempt to keep your edits live. Have a good one! ––Sirdog9002 (talk) 20:48, 10 August 2021 (UTC)

Rollback granted

Hi Sirdog9002. After reviewing your request, I have enabled rollback on your account. Keep in mind these things when using rollback:

  • Getting rollback is no more momentous than installing Twinkle.
  • Rollback should be used to revert clear cases of vandalism only, and not good faith edits.
  • Rollback should never be used to edit war.
  • If abused, rollback rights can be revoked.
  • Use common sense.

If you no longer want rollback, contact me and I'll remove it. Also, for some more information on how to use rollback, see Wikipedia:Administrators' guide/Rollback (even though you're not an admin). I'm sure you'll do great with rollback, but feel free to leave me a message on my talk page if you run into trouble or have any questions about appropriate/inappropriate use of rollback. Thank you for helping to reduce vandalism. Happy editing! Jake Wartenberg (talk) 21:06, 16 August 2021 (UTC)

Hi Sirdog! I've been running into you while patrolling logs and recent changes, and I happened to notice that you don't have the pending changes reviewer rights. I hope you don't mind, but I went through your contributions and I noticed that you're quite active in recent changes patrolling and that you consistently view and undo vandalism and bad faith disruption. I believe that the pending changes reviewer rights would be useful for you to have and that you'd make good use of the tools. Instead of having you formally request the rights at WP:PERM, I went ahead and just gave it to you. This user right allows you to review edits that are pending approval on pages currently under pending changes protection and either accept the edits to make them viewable by the general public, or decline and revert them.

Please keep these things in mind regarding the tool or when you're reviewing any pending changes:

  • A list of articles with pending edits awaiting review can be viewed at Special:PendingChanges.
  • A list of the articles currently under pending changes protection can be viewed at Special:StablePages.
  • Being granted and having these rights does not grant you any additional "status" on Wikipedia, nor does it change how Wikipedia policies apply to you (obviously).
  • You'll generally want to accept any pending changes that appear to be legitimate edits and are not blatant vandalism or disruption, and reject edits that are problematic or that you wouldn't accept yourself.
  • Never accept any pending changes that contain obvious and clear vandalism, blatant neutral point of view issues, copyright violations, or BLP violations.

Useful guidelines and pages for you to read:

I'm sure you'll do fine with the reviewer rights - it's a pretty straight-forward tool and it doesn't drastically change the interface that you're used to already. Nonetheless, please don't hesitate to leave me a message on my user talk page if you run into any questions, get stuck anywhere, or if you're not sure if you should accept or revert pending changes to a page - I'll be more than be happy to help you. If you no longer want the pending changes reviewer rights, let me know and I'll be happy to remove it for you. Thank you for helping to patrol recent changes and keep Wikipedia free of disruption and vandalism - it's a very thankless job to perform and I want you to know that it doesn't go unnoticed and that I appreciate it very much. Happy editing! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 01:11, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

@Oshwah: Thank you very much! I planned on waiting a bit before requesting this user right, as I did not wish to come off as collecting hats and I'm still stumbling a bit on edit requests, but I appreciate you giving me the opportunity! I'll make sure to brush up on the relevant policies and read the pages linked above. Cheers! —Sirdog (talk) 01:20, 20 August 2021 (UTC)
No problem! You deserve it! Keep up the excellent work, and thank you for spending your time and energy toward making Wikipedia a better place. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 02:15, 20 August 2021 (UTC)

Clarification

Hi Sirdog, I noticed that in one of your comments, you thought I was an admin so I just wanted to let you know that I'm not. Btw, in your Preferences > Gadgets > Browsing, you can enable Navigation popups which provide tons of useful info and actions just by hovering over a diff, article title, or user name (including which rights/permissions that user has) - quick way to see if the editor you're engaging with has 5 edits or 50,000. Cheers! Schazjmd (talk) 15:05, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Schazjmd Thanks for reaching out to me! Yeah, I realized that my assumption there was incorrect when I wrote up the ANI report, which is why I avoided making that claim there. I have the gadget you are referring to enabled and I guess I just didn't bother to double check before writing that. I'll go ahead and refactor that statement so as to avoid confusing anyone about this. My apologies for that. Cheers! —Sirdog (talk) 16:03, 29 September 2021 (UTC)

Arbitration

  • A motion has standardised the 500/30 (extended confirmed) restrictions placed by the Arbitration Committee. The standardised restriction is now listed in the Arbitration Committee's procedures.
  • Following the closure of the Iranian politics case, standard discretionary sanctions are authorized for all edits about, and all pages related to, post-1978 Iranian politics, broadly construed.
  • The Arbitration Committee encourages uninvolved administrators to use the discretionary sanctions procedure in topic areas where it is authorised to facilitate consensus in RfCs. This includes, but is not limited to, enforcing sectioned comments, word/diff limits and moratoriums on a particular topic from being brought in an RfC for up to a year.

Miscellaneous

  • Editors have approved expanding the trial of Growth Features from 2% of new accounts to 25%, and the share of newcomers getting mentorship from 2% to 5%. Experienced editors are invited to add themselves to the mentor list.
  • The community consultation phase of the 2021 CheckUser and Oversight appointments process is open for editors to provide comments and ask questions to candidates.

Wikipedia Bias

Hi Sirdog.

I have just attempted to make some MINOR constructive changes to a listing on Wikipedia that is largely conjecture and functions as an op-ed disguised as "fact". I removed opinion words such as "propaganda" and "conspiracy" which are both opinions rather than facts. The particular listing is a documentary that lays out facts, interviews people on various sides of the issue and, like any documentary, makes a case for a particular point of view. I've also attempted to remove some citations that are totally unrelated to the reference words they are associated with (and simply function as ways to insert opinions into the listing). I'm disgusted and appalled by the way Wikipedia has become, itself, a propaganda platform posing as unbiased fact. This has to stop.

For a contextual example check any of Michael Moore's film listings or his personal listing and you will find nowhere the word "conspiracy" or "propaganda" or any other such label which sets out to discredit his work to the reader. This is in stark contrast to the above mentioned listing which is written specifically to dissuade and convince the reader of it's illegitimacy.

Be consistent or be honest about your agenda.

I used to donate to Wikipedia when it was truly open source, focused on neutrality and free from biased and agenda-driven filtering but I will no longer be donating.

Please send my regards up the line.

Cheers.

ArbCom 2021 Elections voter message

Hello! Voting in the 2021 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 6 December 2021. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2021 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:58, 23 November 2021 (UTC)

New page reviewer granted

Hi Sirdog. Your account has been added to the "New page reviewers" user group. Please check back at WP:PERM in case your user right is time limited or probationary. This user group allows you to review new pages through the Curation system and mark them as patrolled, tag them for maintenance issues, or nominate them for deletion. The list of articles awaiting review is located at the New Pages Feed. New page reviewing is vital to maintaining the integrity of the encyclopedia. If you have not already done so, you must read the tutorial at New Pages Review, the linked guides and essays, and fully understand the deletion policy. If you need any help or want to discuss the process, you are welcome to use the new page reviewer talk page. In addition, please remember:

  • Be nice to new editors. They are usually not aware that they are doing anything wrong. Do make use of the message feature when tagging pages for maintenance so that they are aware.
  • You will frequently be asked by users to explain why their page is being deleted. Please be formal and polite in your approach to them – even if they are not.
  • If you are not sure what to do with a page, don't review it – just leave it for another reviewer.
  • Accuracy is more important than speed. Take your time to patrol each page. Use the message feature to communicate with article creators and offer advice as much as possible.

The reviewer right does not change your status or how you can edit articles. If you no longer want this user right, you also may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. In cases of abuse or persistent inaccuracy of reviewing, or long-term inactivity, the right may be withdrawn at administrator discretion. signed, Rosguill talk 21:59, 2 June 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter June 2022

New Page Review queue June 2022

Hello Sirdog/Archives,

Backlog status

At the time of the last newsletter (No.27, May 2022), the backlog was approaching 16,000, having shot up rapidly from 6,000 over the prior two months. The attention the newsletter brought to the backlog sparked a flurry of activity. There was new discussion on process improvements, efforts to invite new editors to participate in NPP increased and more editors requested the NPP user right so they could help, and most importantly, the number of reviews picked up and the backlog decreased, dipping below 14,000[a] at the end of May.

Since then, the news has not been so good. The backlog is basically flat, hovering around 14,200. I wish I could report the number of reviews done and the number of new articles added to the queue. But the available statistics we have are woefully inadequate. The only real number we have is the net queue size.[b]

In the last 30 days, the top 100 reviewers have all made more than 16 patrols (up from 8 last month), and about 70 have averaged one review a day (up from 50 last month).

While there are more people doing more reviews, many of the ~730 with the NPP right are doing little. Most of the reviews are being done by the top 50 or 100 reviewers. They need your help. We appreciate every review done, but please aim to do one a day (on average, or 30 a month).

Backlog drive

A backlog reduction drive, coordinated by buidhe and Zippybonzo, will be held from July 1 to July 31. Sign up here. Barnstars will be awarded.

TIP – New school articles

Many new articles on schools are being created by new users in developing and/or non-English-speaking countries. The authors are probably not even aware of Wikipedia's projects and policy pages. WP:WPSCH/AG has some excellent advice and resources specifically written for these users. Reviewers could consider providing such first-time article creators with a link to it while also mentioning that not all schools pass the GNG and that elementary schools are almost certainly not notable.

Misc

There is a new template available, {{NPP backlog}}, to show the current backlog. You can place it on your user or talk page as a reminder:

Very high unreviewed pages backlog: 12107 articles, as of 08:00, 11 November 2024 (UTC), according to DatBot

There has been significant discussion at WP:VPP recently on NPP-related matters (Draftification, Deletion, Notability, Verifiability, Burden). Proposals that would somewhat ease the burden on NPP aren't gaining much traction, although there are suggestions that the role of NPP be fundamentally changed to focus only on major CSD-type issues.

Reminders
  • Consider staying informed on project issues by putting the project discussion page on your watchlist.
  • If you have noticed a user with a good understanding of Wikipedia notability and deletion, suggest they help the effort by placing {{subst:NPR invite}} on their talk page.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be part of the New Page Reviewer user group, please consider asking any admin to remove you from the list. This will enable NPP to have a better overview of its performance and what improvements need to be made to the process and its software.
  • To opt-out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.
Notes
  1. ^ not including another ~6,000 redirects
  2. ^ The number of weekly reviews reported in the NPP feed includes redirects, which are not included in the backlog we primarily track.

Singularity University

Hi Sirdog, my name is Valeria. I'm looking for input on a discussion at Talk:Singularity University regarding the language in the lead. When looking through the article's history I noticed that you reverted an edit to the controversy section citing a need for consensus, and I would like to achieve such a consensus here. If you have a moment to take a look at my edit request and subsequent discussion, I would really appreciate it. Thanks for your help, Valeria at SG (talk) 15:25, 12 July 2022 (UTC)

@Valeria at SG: Hello! My sincerest apologies for my response time; I've been a bit busy IRL which has stopped on-wiki activities. The reversion in question was made in August 2021 and appears to have been done while patrolling for vandalism. I simply saw in Huggle that material which had numerous sources was removed for Subjective opinion and so restored it. I stated a consensus would be needed as a group of editors, generally, would be preferable to ascertain if the material in question was in fact opinionated despite provided sourcing. I unfortunately do not have more context to provide due to the age of the edit.
I do not have much interest or knowledge in relation to the university, it's controversies section, or academia in general. For those reasons, even were the relevant discussion still open, I would have declined to participate. I apologize I could not be of more help. Cheers! —Sirdog (talk) 03:54, 25 July 2022 (UTC)

New Page Patrol newsletter August 2022

New Page Review queue August 2022

Hello Sirdog/Archives,

Backlog status

After the last newsletter (No.28, June 2022), the backlog declined another 1,000 to 13,000 in the last week of June. Then the July backlog drive began, during which 9,900 articles were reviewed and the backlog fell by 4,500 to just under 8,500 (these numbers illustrate how many new articles regularly flow into the queue). Thanks go to the coordinators Buidhe and Zippybonzo, as well as all the nearly 100 participants. Congratulations to Dr vulpes who led with 880 points. See this page for further details.

Unfortunately, most of the decline happened in the first half of the month, and the backlog has already risen to 9,600. Understandably, it seems many backlog drive participants are taking a break from reviewing and unfortunately, we are not even keeping up with the inflow let alone driving it lower. We need the other 600 reviewers to do more! Please try to do at least one a day.

Coordination
MB and Novem Linguae have taken on some of the coordination tasks. Please let them know if you are interested in helping out. MPGuy2824 will be handling recognition, and will be retroactively awarding the annual barnstars that have not been issued for a few years.
Open letter to the WMF
The Page Curation software needs urgent attention. There are dozens of bug fixes and enhancements that are stalled (listed at Suggested improvements). We have written a letter to be sent to the WMF and we encourage as many patrollers as possible to sign it here. We are also in negotiation with the Board of Trustees to press for assistance. Better software will make the active reviewers we have more productive.
TIP - Reviewing by subject
Reviewers who prefer to patrol new pages by their most familiar subjects can do so from the regularly updated sorted topic list.
New reviewers
The NPP School is being underused. The learning curve for NPP is quite steep, but a detailed and easy-to-read tutorial exists, and the Curation Tool's many features are fully described and illustrated on the updated page here.

Blitz: Participants in our August Copy Editing Blitz copy-edited 51,074 words in 17 articles. Of the 15 editors who signed up, 11 claimed at least one copy-edit. Barnstars awarded are noted here.

Drive: Forty-one editors took part in our September Backlog Elimination Drive; between them they copy-edited 199 articles. Barnstars awards are noted here.

Blitz: Our October Copy Editing Blitz begins on 16 October at 00:01 (UTC) and will end on 22 October at 23:59 (UTC). Barnstars awarded will be posted here.

Progress report: As of 19:57, 12 October 2022 (UTC), GOCE copyeditors have processed 303 requests for copy edit – including withdrawn and declined ones – since 1 January. At the time of writing, there are 77 requests awaiting attention and the backlog of tagged articles stands at 1,759. We always need more active, skilled copyeditors – particularly for requests – so please get involved if you can.

Election news: In our mid-year election, serving coordinators Baffle gab1978, Dhtwiki, Miniapolis, Reidgreg and Tenryuu were returned for another term, and were joined by new coordinator Zippybonzo. New Page Patrol newsletter October 2022

Hello Sirdog/Archives,

Much has happened since the last newsletter over two months ago. The open letter finished with 444 signatures. The letter was sent to several dozen people at the WMF, and we have heard that it is being discussed but there has been no official reply. A related article appears in the current issue of The Signpost. If you haven't seen it, you should, including the readers' comment section.

Awards: Barnstars were given for the past several years (thanks to MPGuy2824), and we are now all caught up. The 2021 cup went to John B123 for leading with 26,525 article reviews during 2021. To encourage moderate activity, a new "Iron" level barnstar is awarded annually for reviewing 360 articles ("one-a-day"), and 100 reviews earns the "Standard" NPP barnstar. About 90 reviewers received barnstars for each of the years 2018 to 2021 (including the new awards that were given retroactively). All awards issued for every year are listed on the Awards page. Check out the new Hall of Fame also.

Software news: Novem Linguae and MPGuy2824 have connected with WMF developers who can review and approve patches, so they have been able to fix some bugs, and make other improvements to the Page Curation software. You can see everything that has been fixed recently here. The reviewer report has also been improved.

NPP backlog May – October 15, 2022

Suggestions:

  • There is much enthusiasm over the low backlog, but remember that the "quality and depth of patrolling are more important than speed".
  • Reminder: an article should not be tagged for any kind of deletion for a minimum of 15 minutes after creation and it is often appropriate to wait an hour or more. (from the NPP tutorial)
  • Reviewers should focus their effort where it can do the most good, reviewing articles. Other clean-up tasks that don't require advanced permissions can be left to other editors that routinely improve articles in these ways (creating Talk Pages, specifying projects and ratings, adding categories, etc.) Let's rely on others when it makes the most sense. On the other hand, if you enjoy doing these tasks while reviewing and it keeps you engaged with NPP (or are guiding a newcomer), then by all means continue.
  • This user script puts a link to the feed in your top toolbar.

Backlog:

Saving the best for last: From a July low of 8,500, the backlog climbed back to 11,000 in August and then reversed in September dropping to below 6,000 and continued falling with the October backlog drive to under 1,000, a level not seen in over four years. Keep in mind that there are 2,000 new articles every week, so the number of reviews is far higher than the backlog reduction. To keep the backlog under a thousand, we have to keep reviewing at about half the recent rate!

Reminders
  • Newsletter feedback - please take this short poll about the newsletter.
  • If you're interested in instant messaging and chat rooms, please join us on the New Page Patrol Discord, where you can ask for help and live chat with other patrollers.
  • Please add the project discussion page to your watchlist.
  • If you are no longer very active on Wikipedia or you no longer wish to be a reviewer, please ask any admin to remove you from the group. If you want the tools back again, just ask at PERM.
  • To opt out of future mailings, please remove yourself here.

Laura Messing article

Hi again Sirdog, Thank you once again for your note on the article I created. I have now updated the source following the aspects mentioned in the guide to writing your first article and would like to hear your thoughts/ suggestions on the edits. I appreciate your guidance! Melloncita (talk) 15:01, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Good morning, Melloncita! It would say my analysis isn't all that necessary, as after an administrator handled the copyright infringement a new page patroller has marked your page as reviewed. This means that an experienced editor has made the determination your article is suitable for inclusion on Wikipedia. This also means the article can be indexed by search engines such as Google. While editors are still able to propose deletion or send it to articles for deletion the odds are much lower than before. You should be quite proud of yourself, especially considering you haven't been an editor for long. Good work!
My only advice at this point would be to try and get a photo of the subject (keeping in mind copyright and our image usage policy) and inserting an infobox. I believe the template in question would be {{Infobox person}}. After that, if possible, it's just expanding the article. If you have specific questions, and I feel qualified to answer, you are free to ask here and I'll answer. I would also advise using the teahouse, a place specifically for new editors to get answers from experienced editors. Cheers! —Sirdog (talk) 12:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much @Sirdog! Your notes are much appreciated. Thank you once again for taking the time to send me your insights and your suggestions. I will indeed try to include an inbox and a photo, I'm currently reading the guidelines to do so. An absolute pleasure to e-meet you and having guided me on my first steps. All my best, -Melloncita Melloncita (talk) 14:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Early end of the backlog drive

A few days ago, new page patrollers got the backlog to zero. Due to the unprecedented success of the backlog drive, it will be ending early—at the end of 24 October, or in approximately two hours.

Barnstars will be awarded as soon as the coords can tally the results. Streak awards will be allocated based on the first three weeks of the drive, with the last three days being counted as part of week three.

Great work everyone! MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 21:50, 24 October 2022 (UTC)

Midhun Jith

HI SIRDOG CAN YOU HELP TO EDIT THE WIKIPIDIA OF Midhun Jith Nayansuzen (talk) 09:11, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Good morning, Nayansuzen!
I would advise reading Wikipedia's page on making your first article and reading our content policies. The policies that involved the page Midhun Jith included significant copyright infringement and recreating a page that community consensus has been determined should be deleted. I would heavily suggest working on other areas of Wikipedia first. before you jump to article creation. that way you can get more acclimated to our policies. If you are heavily motivated to create this one article, and it isn't due to a potential conflict of interest with the subject, I would advise making use of the articles for creation process. That said, understand that the community determined to delete Midhun Jith due to not meeting our notability policy. He must meet our general notability criteria or perhaps a more specific criteria, such as our criteria for articles about people. It's because of the plethora of policies in play relating to an article being created (which no doubt may be confusing or frustrating for you to learn about all at once) that article creation isn't necessarily advised for new editors.
If you have any specific questions and I feel qualified you are more than welcome to ask me here. You can also use a venue like the teahouse, which is a place designed specifically for helping new editors. —Sirdog (talk) 12:24, 26 October 2022 (UTC)

Request: Need Semi protection on Vellalar

Hello sir,

The page has many flaws and authors pov. It's most of the information (including summary) was contributed by 2 editors only. The two were fighting like kids in the talk page as you can see. You can compare the page with Rajputs, Khatri, Vokkaliga and many dominant society of Indian regions. These pages are well constructed by genuine editors from various backgrounds. Literally, The Vellalar page summary is author's pov (their claim starts "seems to be rather"). The page need major improvements, cleanups and more sources.

The Wikipedia's purpose is to benefit readers by acting as a widely accessible and free encyclopedia that contains information on all branches of knowledge. If the page can be edited by admins only, what's the need of wikipedia editors? The information should be contributed by volunteers and genuine editors without any restrictions and opinionated moderators rivalry. I hope you understand my concern. Thanks :) Exhistorian (talk) 18:22, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

Hello, Exhistorian.
The page in question is currently extended confirmed protected. This means that only editors with 500 edits and an account that is 30 days old can edit the page. It is currently not only editable by administrators. The administrator that protected the page is Tamzin on August 13th of this year in accordance with general sanctions over the subject area as authorized by the English Wikipedia community. I am not an administrator and cannot effect the page's protection. You can either request the page protection be lowered at the venue for requesting adjustment to page protection (though this will likely fail for the reasons I've explained above) or make an extended-confirmed edit request on the page. For the latter, an editor with sufficient permissions will eventually review the edit and - if it's appropriate - implement it for you.
I would advise removing the {{Admin help}} template (leaving your message is entirely okay) from Talk:Vellalar, as there is nothing in your message that an administrator can take action on. Your best bets are the methods I've described above.
I hope this helps! —Sirdog (talk) 18:38, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for the Info. I'll do as you said. Exhistorian (talk) 18:42, 1 December 2022 (UTC)
