Disputed fair use rationale for Image:IndianOceanTag.jpg

Thanks for uploading Image:IndianOceanTag.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you.BetacommandBot (talk) 07:05, 1 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Advice (for Harish)

Hey there! I'm just a random editor who's seeking advice. I was curious to know if it's fine to quote from the same online article, and to reference the same article multiple times (due to the quotes in the references). To maybe help explain what I'm doing, I'm currently working on the article Akshardham (Delhi) in my sandbox thing (as to be able to work on cleaning up the article in peace, as such), and if you look at the article in my sandbox, you'll notice I have a lot of quotations going on in the 'References' section. Many of the references are from the same article, but it's fairly huge... so I was curious to know if it's fine, really.

Also, if you have time, would you be willing to briefly go over the work I've done to the article, everything that's referenced is the work I've done (even on the official 'Akshardham' article). The rest I'm still working on, so a brief thought of my direction would be cool. By the way, I picked you randomly from one of the raandom Indian wikiprojects, seeing you to be an Admin. Sorry if it's a problem, bro. I just wanna make sure I'm heading the right way for a REALLY GOOD article (Featured, if one day possible). I appreciate any help giveable, and thanks for at least reading.

P.S. - I see where you wrote that you mention you prefer to keep convo's without breaking, so if you inform me of a reply, it'd be really nice if you dropped the link in my talk page, for Archive purposes... please! :) -- Harish - 19:59, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Boundless Planet Deletion

Can you explain your deletion of the Released MMORTS title Boundless Planet's entry and retention of the Mankind, Time of Defiance, Ballerium, Dreamlords, and other titles? Seems that this game keeps getting deleted with no explanation by folk with no idea or clue about MMORTS games. Boundless Planet is a genre defining game and one of the only ones to have every boxed ticked. Come to www.mmortsgamers.com or www.mmorts.com if you want to debate this as you need to check your facts. Soon we will be doing an article on the wiki entry and featuring each member who has edited it and hindered our genre's development and coverage. Feel free to engage me over this beforehand to get an explantion in.

ArbCom decision on User: Dbachmann

Well, well! The ArbCom may be of some use after all ;) (though I keep in mind that four arbiters voted to ban me for nothing and that Bachmann got off without any sanctions whatsoever -- just a reprimand and a "reminder," like he'd somehow -- oops -- "forgotten" he's supposed to behave). I never did find the patience to focus on the prosecution of User: Moreschi for his actions, or all the proposed remedies, but perhaps he and Dbachmann will both find themselves a little chastened by this recent decision. It was about time someone did something to rein in these rogue admins who think they can get away with anything. Well done -- all around. :) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Deeceevoice (talkcontribs) 20:49, 14 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

User:Soumen_thakur

Deleted User:Soumen_thakur Sir, Today it was very unfortunate to see that you have deleted my userpage (User:Soumen_thakur) mentioning the reasons: self-gratification, vanity, advert. (Vide deletion log "13:00, 19 September 2007 Sir Nicholas de Mimsy-Porpington (Talk | contribs) deleted "User:Soumen thakur" ‎ (self-gratification, vanity, advert)"
However, I had created said user page clearly following the guideline of wikipedia i.e. how to create a user page and I would like to mention a paragraph from the said guideline as quoted below,
".... Some people add information about themselves as well, possibly including contact information (email, instant messaging, etc), a photograph, their real name, their location, information about their areas of expertise and interest, likes and dislikes, homepages, and so forth..... "
Therefore, if one mindfully sees the content of the said page (deleted), it will clearly reflect that I have included more of my bio-data related information and about myself on that page but now it becomes confusing that you have deleted the page on the grounds viz. self-gratification, vanity, advert!?

As far as my knowledge goes I do understand that 'self-gratification' means, 'the act of satisfying ones own desires and giving oneself (himself) pleasure' BUT it is not understood how one can even term my "personal information" as a self-gratification, instead of treating the same more like a bio-data! Shall I, from now on, treat a 'bio-data' more as a self-gratifying content instead of considering the same as "personal information"?
You have also included the term "vanity" as one of the reasons for the concerned deletion while, according to my understandings, vanity means, "excessive belief in one's own abilities or attractiveness to others"! BUT I do not really understand that how a bio-data like personal information can be interpreted as my excessive belief in my own abilities!? This reason shown by you for the concerned deletion is very confusing to me but it does really enable me to realize what should have been the proper (ideal) page content, can you please throw some light on it?

And finally, the last reason for deletion stated by you is 'advert' BUT it would be my pleasure to inform you that necessarily an 'advert' is a public promotion of some product or service (generally for commercial purpose) OR a form of communication whose purpose is to inform potential customers about products and services, here please note the term 'customers'. And a customer is generally a buyer. BUT can you please explain me how the deleted user page was displaying my service for commercial purpose. Here, I would like to add that I (rather my business) have more than enough publicity in the print media here in national market and I don't think that placing an advert in the wikipedia user page would be of any commercial gain to me as the effectiveness of any intended advert here is almost nil (if not negative value)!

Therefore, considering the stated facts and circumstances, I can not really accept that said deletion was at all the act of an efficient administrator, however its my personal interpretation about said act and in this regard, I may not agree with your views.

So can you please enlighten me explaining what I should have included in my user page so that one would consider the same as a proper or near ideal content? What was wrong with the deleted page, any explanation?

Thanks regards,
- SNT (talk) 00:44, 8 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The page was deleted because your account has very few contributions to the encyclopedia and most of them were on your userpage itself. There are a lot of people who use Wikipedia as a tool for self-promotion, and it reasonably appears that, at that time, you were using the page for the same reason. It also appears that you turned up on Wikipedia after you realised that Google had stopped turning up your name on search. Wikipedia is not for self-promotion. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 11:35, 9 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Hddcs.JPG

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Hddcs.JPG. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Ricky81682 (talk) 02:13, 19 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Please visit Wikipedia:Admin coaching/Status to update your status. Also, please remember to update your capacity (5th table variable) in the form of a fraction (eg. 2/3 means you are currently coaching 2 students, and could accept 1 more student). Thank you. Dear Sir Drance, thank you for your message. However, I regret to inform you that I would not be in a position to coach you for adminship, since I have been out of touch with Wikipedia since a considerable time now. The encyclopedia and the community evolves continually, and it is essential that when I come back, I am able to accustom myself to the environment. There are, obviously, better suited coaches around – like User:Riana for instance. Best wishes, — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 15:17, 28 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Board elections 2008

Hi Nick,

The 2008 board elections will be in a few months (1 to 14 June) and the election committee is looking for people willing to translate the election pages into various languages. I noticed that you seem to be interested in Meta translations en>hi. Would you be available and interested in translating the board election pages into Hindi? I'm looking for at least two people per language so no one translator feels overwhelmed, so they can mutually proofread each other and help each other out as needed, but if only one is available that is fine as well. (To get an idea of how much work is involved you can take a look at last year's election pages.)

If you are not available or are not interested, it would be nice if you could point me in the direction of users who might be interested in helping, or show them this message.

Please contact me on my Meta page (meta:User talk:Arria Belli), where you can write to me in either English, French, Spanish or Italian, whichever you feel most comfortable with.

Happy editing,

I would like to know if this is why you deleted the article, because the way I read it, it was because the "title of the article is POV ", and the material looked like commentary. But if the real reason is that religious harmony in India is "misleading or false information", then please tell me so that I can take rest.--talk 07:44, 27 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Replaceable fair use Image:Parikrama1.jpg

Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:Parikrama1.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Do you want to opt out of receiving this notice? Rettetast (talk) 23:05, 20 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Some time ago, you participated in a deletion review concerning Allegations of Chinese apartheid. I thought you might like to know that the parent article, Allegations of apartheid, was recently nominated for deletion. Given that many of the issues that have been raised are essentially the same as those on the article on which you commented earlier, you may have a view on whether Allegations of apartheid should be kept or deleted. Image source problem with Image:Amrit.jpg

Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

Thanks for uploading Image:Amrit.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 19:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. OsamaK 19:31, 16 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Requesting Suggestions

I looked you up from Wikiproject India, in which I have enlisted myself. I have been spending some time bringing this article up to par and I have done a lot of work today. Would you take a look into the article and suggest the ways in which it can be expanded (I have a list of mathematical, medical, and engineering related innovations but am really lacking in the machines, astronomy, physics etc. fields) and made better? I want to bring it up to the level of this article and then work on the Science and technology in ancient India (rename it 'History of science and technology in India') article and then perhaps add a section like this one in the India article.

Thanks for uploading Image:Parikrama Logo.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Nlsiulogo.gif)

Thanks for uploading Image:Nlsiulogo.gif. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 12:30, 3 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Kindly restore Chutiya kingdom. For reference, look at Gait, Edward, 1906 "History of Assam". ([5])

Can you please produce substantial references? The link which you provided here does not mention "Chutiya kingdom" anywhere. I am referring to multiple, independent and reliable references. Thank you. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 16:19, 16 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"History of Assam" by Edward Gait is a standard reference, and "Chutiya kingdom" appears highlighted in the link I have provided. I quote from the text here, with the mention underlined:
The founder of the Chutiya kingdom is said to have been a chief named Bir Pal...
The Chutiya kingdom has been extensively chronicled in the Buranjis of the Ahom kingdom, which are some of the primary sources of the kingdom. Amalendu Guha mentions the expansion of the Ahom kingdom at the cost of the Chutiya kingdom as follows (Social Scientist, Vol. 12, No. 6 (Jun., 1984), pp. 70-77, [6]):
Their almost simultaneous northward expansion towards the Hinduized Chutiya Kingdom had also the same effect.
An alternative spelling is "Chutia". Sometimes, people who belong to the ethnic community associated with the historical kingdom use the name as a last name. For example here. Note the name and address of the person "Joyonti Chutia" in the link. A Chutia community exists in Assam, though it has largely assimilated in the greater Assamese community. Much of Assam's cultural artefacts and political history are sourced from this historical kingdom and the people associated with it.
Could you please indicate what your references are that claim this article is a hoax?
Chaipau (talk) 11:54, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yep, you are right. I checked the references over JSTOR and restored the article. However, the first reference you linked me to never mentioned "Chutiya Kingdom" anywhere. I regret any inconvenience caused. — Nearly Headless Nick {C} 14:43, 18 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Locksport Reinstatement?

Any chance of reinstating the Locksport article(if that is even possible after such a long time...though I can probably dig up the text) and merge the TOOOL page? Presumably that is a far more valuable use of space, having the actual community discussed rather than one segment of it. Redirection of traffic from the Locksport page to another that is about a specific group of the locksporting community seems rather odd as well as having a ref to participating in lockpicking for the "hack value" but no actual info about the community...(also posting this on NawlinWiki's talk, not sure where is best.) Seri Begawan was named after the Sultan's late father Sir Omar Ali Saifuddien on October 5, 1970, its original name being Bandar Brunei. Begawan is a name given to Bruneian monarchs who have abdicated, originally coming from the Sanskrit word for "god"). Bandar, comes from Persian بندر and means "port" or "haven" (bandar means "town" in Malay). -- Y not? 14:16, 30 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I need your mentorship

Hi,

I need help from an experienced Wikipedian, and I saw your name over at WP:ADOPT.

I need your advice concerning WP:WPOOK, which I've been coordinating. The set of pages the project concerns is listed at Portal:Contents/Outline of knowledge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Outline of knowledge#Projected outline, and has grown to about 500 articles in the encyclopedia.

The goals of the WikiProject are:

  1. Increase awareness of readers of the existence of the outlines on Wikipedia
  2. Complete the existing outlines
  3. Create an outline for every subject that is extensive enough to benefit from having an outline (core subjects and major or extensive fields). There are thousands of these.
  4. Recruit as many editors to work on these as possible (we need thousands of editors working on these)
  5. Surpass portals in number by the end of the summer, and leave them in the dust by the end of the year
  6. Get the major outline subject areas displayed on the Main Page (in place of or in addition to the portal links at the top of the page)
  7. Increase the OOK to higher quality than Britannica's Outline of Knowledge (published in its Propaedia volume).

I'm very interested in your comments on how to achieve these goals.

Also I'm interested in every possible way of reaching readers and editors of Wikipedia. How can I get the most eyes and typing fingers on Wikipedia's outlines? Contacting editors directly without a reason relevant to them is spam, which I'd like to avoid. There are 75,000 regular editors on Wikipedia, and I want to contact all of them. But how do I do it?

Directly or indirectly, I don't care which, piecemeal or all-at-once, all methods are fine with me. But I've got to find ways. I need your advice.

I would also like to know how to find or attract editors to create new outlines. And I need advice on finding editors to help write the new outline article mentioned above (it needs to be fleshed out, completely referenced, and brought to featured article status).

Please recommend anyone you know who might be interested in sinking their teeth into a project like this. Or ways to reach groups of editors. Or ways to reach all editors. I welcome any and all recommendations and advice you might have.

And any thoughts on attaining the WikiProject goals above.

I look forward to your reply on my talk page.

'Archiving' at User talk:Jayjg

Was the manual 'archiving' at User talk:Jayjg legitimate? It has the effect of hiding the adverse Arbcom decision relevant to that editor. Note that the "Well-Wishes" section was not archived, and that the editor doing the 'archiving' had contributed to the "Well-Wishes" section. --John Nagle (talk) 02:24, 23 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 1 - (June 2010)

Project News

WP:IND Newsletter is back! It's been nearly a year since the last edition, but we hope to bring out issues on a more regular basis now. The India Wikiproject was set up to increasing coverage of India-related topics on Wikipedia, and over the past few months the focus has been on improving article quality. A number of the project's featured articles underwent featured article reviews over the past year. Of these, Darjeeling and Flag of India survived the review process, while the rest were demoted. During the same period, Gangtok, Harbhajan Singh, Darjeeling and Mysore were featured on the main page respectively on August 20, September 17, November 6 and December 29, 2009. Meanwhile, articles on topics as diverse as Political history of Mysore and Coorg (1565–1760), Marwari horse and Iravan were promoted as featured articles, and respectively appeared on the main page on March 25, May 17 and May 28, 2010. Consequently, the number of FA-class articles under the project's scope dropped from 67 in August 2009 to 63 in June 2010. The number of good articles, however, saw a more than 40% increase, from 91 to 130 during the same period, while the number of featured lists saw a 33% increase from 12 to 16.

Due to the recent policy changes regarding unreferenced Biographies of Living People (BLPs), an effort was started in January 2010 to source all unreferenced BLPs coming under Wikiproject India. 1200 such articles were identified initially and more were added to the list later. Due to the sourcing effort, the number of Indian unreferenced BLPs is down to 565 currently. During February-April 2010, There was a large scale disruption of Kerala related articles by a Thrissur based IP vandal. Editing from a dynamic IP BSNL connection, the vandal changed dates of birth, death and ages of a number of Malayalam and Tamil film actors. Later he added a few international biographies to his list. He also marked some living people like Arvind Swamy as dead. A month long range block was imposed on his IP range two times and each time he came back to vandalise dates once the block expired. Currently the range has been blocked for three months till September 11, 2010.

WikiProject India Newsletter Volume V, Issue no. 2 - November 2010

English WikiProject News

After a missed issue, the WP:IND newsletter is back on track to being a regular bimonthly feature. The Indian WikiProject has seen plenty of online and off-line action, both in English as well as other Indian languages, and we now have a bigger, better format that intends to feature content and news from the English as well as other Indian language Wikipedias.

Reaching out to Indians has been the theme of the Indian Wikiproject over the past couple of months, aiming to involve a greater number of Indians in editing both the English and Indian language Wikipedias. To this end, efforts to set up the Indian chapter of Wikimedia have moved into their final stages, and registration of the society is currently pending. An effort is underway to push for "WikiMarathons" at meetups, where attendees will be encouraged to edit the English and/or Indian language Wikipedias. This is intended to popularise Wikipedia editing among the general public. In addition, a bot to post DYK's from the Indian Wikiproject to Twitter was created and launched by User:Logicwiki.

What's New?

Regrettably, the number of Featured Articles has dropped from 63 in June to 58 at the end of October 2010. Several FAs came up for review and were delisted, while Fundamental Rights, Directive Principles and Fundamental Duties of India was saved. Meanwhile, Chalukya Dynasty appeared on the main page on July 9, 2010. Hearteningly, the number of Good Articles increased from 130 to 136 during the same period, while the number of Featured Lists remained constant at 16.

The source code for the Article Alert Bot is now available and the bot itself is expected to be up and running very shortly. This means that article alerts for the Indian Wikiproject will again be available, enabling editors to easily keep track of developments in respect of reviews, nominations, deletions etc.

The date change vandal mentioned briefly in the previous issue made a reappearance when the range block on his IP range expired in September. Consequently the block was extended till September 2011.

In October there was a heated discussion in the India project noticeboard regarding the copyright status of the Indian party symbols. The discussion was triggered by the deletion of Wiki San Roze's party symbol images by Hammersoft as copyright violations. No resolution was reached, partly because of our inability to explain to Hammersoft how election symbols in India differ from party logos. Comments are requested from anyone with a background in Indian copyright law to clarify this issue.
