If you need further help, you can:
  Ask a question
or you can:
  Get help at the Teahouse
or even:
  Ask an experienced editor to "adopt" you

There are many ways you can contribute to Wikipedia. Here are a few ideas:
  Fight vandalism
  Be a WikiFairy or a WikiGnome

The best way to learn about something is to experience it. Explore, learn, contribute, and don't forget to have some fun!
To get some practice editing you can use a sandbox. You can create your own private sandbox for use any time. Perfect for working on bigger projects. Then for easy access in the future, you can put {{My sandbox}} on your user page. By the way, seeing as you haven't created a user page yet, simply click here to start it.

Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, Simpleware wiki. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places, or things you have written about in the article ScanIP, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a COI may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic, and it is important when editing Wikipedia articles that such connections be completely transparent. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for organizations for more information. In particular, we ask that you please:

  • avoid editing or creating articles related to you and your family, friends, school, company, club, or organization, as well as any competing companies' projects or products;
  • instead, you are encouraged to propose changes on the Talk pages of affected article(s) (see the {{request edit}} template);
  • when discussing affected articles, disclose your COI (see WP:DISCLOSE);
  • avoid linking to the Wikipedia article or to the website of your organization in other articles (see WP:SPAM);
  • exercise great caution so that you do not violate Wikipedia's content policies.

In addition, you must disclose your employer, client, and affiliation with respect to any contribution for which you receive, or expect to receive, compensation (see WP:PAID).

Please take a few moments to read and review Wikipedia's policies regarding conflicts of interest, especially those pertaining to neutral point of view, sourcing and autobiographies. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:03, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Control copyright icon Hello Simpleware wiki, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to ScanIP has had to be removed, as it appears to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributing to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from your sources to avoid copyright or plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. However, there are steps that must be taken to verify that license before you do. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are public domain or compatibly licensed), it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at the help desk before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you can, but please follow the steps in Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 21:06, 1 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Response

[edit]

Hi, this image was not uploaded by myself - it was made by Codename Lisa - please see the Talk page for the edit.

Revision 785377206 by User:Codename Lisa[edit] Hello, everyone

Revision 785377206 contains extensive changes to the article, so much so that the edit summary was insufficient. Hence, here is a summary of what I did in it:

Reordered major sections. Previously, the article sections were ordered as "Import formats", "Export formats", "Add-on modules" and "Application areas". This clearly suboptimal to most readers. Why must they start with fancruft such as import formats, which is a list of what non-experts consider "computer gobbledygook"? I re-ordered the sections into "Application areas", "Add-on modules", "Import formats", and "Export formats". Dissolved the gallery section at the bottom of the article and distributed its contents across the article. One of its images went to the infobox that didn't have a screenshot at the time. Removed File:Product image example for Simpleware ScanIP.jpg from the article, as it is not showing anything educational or encyclopedic. It is a vague image at best. It can't even be used as the infobox icon. I will upload that myself shortly. MOS:CAPS and MOS:ACRONYM is extensively applied. MOS:LAYOUT is applied to "Application areas" and "Add-on modules" sections. Version number was updated. Plus sign from the module names was removed. (Deprecated) The "See also" section was deleted. It is not a "See again" section after all. Please see WP:SEEALSO. Licensing terms was updated Best regards, Codename Lisa (talk) 06:18, 13 June 2017 (UTC)

Information icon Hello and welcome to Wikipedia. When you add content to talk pages and Wikipedia pages that have open discussion (but never when editing articles), such as at Talk:ScanIP, please be sure to sign your posts. There are two ways to do this. Either:

  1. Add four tildes ( ~~~~ ) at the end of your comment; or
  2. With the cursor positioned at the end of your comment, click on the signature button ( or ) located above the edit window.

This will automatically insert a signature with your username or IP address and the time you posted the comment. This information is necessary to allow other editors to easily see who wrote what and when.

Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. By the way, ScanIP is not the best example to draw from. If it were at AFC I would have made similar comments about it: The lack of indications of notability in the body text combined with wall of references makes it difficult to assess notability. I realize you didn't write the article, but I did see that you edited it and made requested edits on the talk page. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 17:52, 4 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Use of the term "we"

[edit]

Your use of the term "we" is confusing. It can be read two ways - 1) that multiple people edit with this account, or 2) that only one person uses the account BUT the person is speaking on behalf of a group.

This is confusing. If you use "we" to refer to a group of people, please make sure that the group is "defined" earlier in the same comment. For example, "My supervisor and I believe that XYZ should be changed... We ...." is perfectly fine. "I work for and edit on behalf of XYZ, and we think XYZ should be change..." is also fine. But just saying "We" makes me wonder "Was it Alice editing yesterday, is Bob editing today, and will Charlie be editing tomorrow?"

To add to what Oshwah said above, if you are more than one person, that's against the rules, every editor needs to have their own account. Even if you are just one person I recommend changing your username to make it clear that this is one person and it will not be "handed off" to another person. Names like "Alice at Simpleware" or "Simpleware Bob" are fine. Please read WP:Username policy and WP:Changing username for more information. davidwr/(talk)/(contribs) 🎄 16:24, 5 January 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi davidwr - just the one person for 'we' - I will change my username, thanks.
