Managing a conflict of interest

[edit]

Information icon Hello, SimonHem. We welcome your contributions, but if you have an external relationship with the people, places or things you have written about on Wikipedia, you may have a conflict of interest (COI). Editors with a conflict of interest may be unduly influenced by their connection to the topic. See the conflict of interest guideline and FAQ for article subjects for more information. We ask that you:

Hi Simon. You've said when editing the Omaze article that your edit is a result of having worked with Omaze and other reputable sources to check all facts. Do you literally mean that you have been in contact with people at Omaze and your edit on this article has had their input? --Belbury (talk) 16:21, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I see that you've already made a declaration on your talk page that Omaze are actually paying you to edit the Wikipedia article about them, I'd missed that. Okay. As a user with a conflict of interest you are strongly discouraged from editing the article directly, you should instead make suggestions on at Talk:Omaze. If you want to simply open a discussion there of "Omaze have paid me to rewrite the article like this, what do people think?", that would be fine as a start. --Belbury (talk) 16:33, 30 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Belbury
I'm a freelance writer who is just updating the page for Omaze, but doing so in a journalistic way (that's my background) to make sure it's up to date factually, I've been very careful to make sure that I'm not giving Omaze's one-sided view on things - just providing the latest facts. The current article is very out of date, hence me wanting to replace it. Would that be OK?
Best wishes
Simon SimonHem (talk) 08:22, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just to double check, i"ve been throught the current article that's up there and, bar a couple of facts (which I'll leave in the new version) it is all out of date and therefore inaccurate. So if you could bare me to change it, I would be very grateful. SimonHem (talk) 08:28, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
No, don't rewrite the article in its entirety, please. The best thing for you to do would be to submit edit requests on the article talk page. Here's how to do that (and what to think about when you do it). Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 10:54, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bonadea. I'm happy to do that. But it would be new bits of text for each section, if that's OK? SimonHem (talk) 16:23, 1 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I just noticed that you'd submitted the draft again – an entirely new text about the company will not be accepted in that form, I'm afraid. Don't edit or resubmit the draft page, instead keep suggesting changes and working on the text with other editors, on the article talk page. Your first edit request was declined, but that doesn't mean all requests will be – yes, do suggest changes to one section at a time. Focus on any information in the existing article that is actually incorrect or outdated. Regards, --bonadea contributions talk 10:45, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bonadea
I resubmitted the page, on Friday, with a few small changes that had been suggested by editors, but I didn't get a response This follows making some more incremental changes that were declined for unclear reasons.
But as I explain in the chat above, it doesn't really make sense to go through the current page and suggest small changes, because it is all inaccurate. The information on it is nearly five years out of date. It needs the total rewrite I have provided.
I fear we are slightly going around in circles on this piece! Is there any chance the new version can be put online and I can then help with any feedback or questions from editors and other contributors.
Best wishes
Simon SimonHem (talk) 15:01, 8 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Bonadea
Just to add, here is the feedback I got from Axad12 when I just tried to change the opening lines for the article. I took out the phrases they were concerned about, (bar the celebrity reference). So it's unclear what is wrong with the piece, now. It is factual, non-biased and thourougly source and, as I say would replace text that is entirely inaccurate.
Best wishes
Simon
Hi there,
As discussed with Wiki editors Bonadea, I'd like to update this page, which is several years out of date. I have worked with Omaze on the text (which I have declared) and it is all confirmed as factually accurate by them. May I start with the first section?
It currently say this:
///Omaze is a for-profit fundraising company that partners with charities in fundraising events. To enter the draw for the prizes, financial contributions were encouraged, with 15% to 60% of the money going to the partner charity.
The company was founded by Charlie Cummins and Matthew Pohlson in 2012,participants are encouraged to make  was privately ownein Los Angeles, California. The company has raised over $130 million for over 350 charities, including UNICEF, After-School All-Stars, Julia's House, Product Red, and Make-A-Wish Foundation.
While initially founded in the United States, the company ceased to operate in the country as of 2023 due to regulatory issues, though it remains active in the United Kingdom.////
But I'd like to update it to this:
///Omaze is an entertainment company with a social purpose.. It raises significant funding for charity organisations through its luxury-house prize draws in the UK, with a portion of the income raised going to charity.
American entrepreneurs Matthew Pohlson and Ryan Cummings established the organisation in the US in 2012. It initially specialised in celebrity-experience draws, before switching focus to UK house draws in 2020. Omaze has raised more than £51 million for good causes, as of August 2024./// SimonHem (talk) 08:06, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply][reply]
I should say, Omaze have confirmed that my new text is all factually correct. It has been checked with other sources too.
I have the sourced up text saved in my drafts, so can add that. SimonHem (talk) 08:10, 2 October 2024 (UTC)[reply][reply]
Not done: Hi, this article is currently tagged for reading like an advertisement. That situation is going to be made significantly worse if phrases such as the following are to be included: "with a social purpose", "significant funding", "luxury-house", "celebrity-experience draws". On that basis I'm afraid I have no option but to decline this request, which appears to be solely promotional in intent.

A tag has been placed on Matthew Pohlson, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G11 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the page seems to be unambiguous advertising which only promotes a company, group, product, service, person, or point of view and would need to be fundamentally rewritten in order to become encyclopedic. Omaze IP edit

[edit]

Hi, I see an IP user applied a slightly cleaned up version of the text you'd been paid to write for this article, yesterday.

If this is your IP, you must log in when making a controversial edit such as this, so that we know it's coming from you.

If you asked or paid a third party to make the edit on your behalf, this is inappropriate behaviour per WP:MEATPUPPET. Belbury (talk) 09:22, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If you paid someone else to do it, they at least need to disclose the fact that they've been paid to do it, along with everything else someone with a conflict of interest needs to do. Courtesy ping to Belbury I dream of horses (Hoofprints) (Neigh at me) 15:29, 31 October 2024 (UTC)[reply]
