Hi. Just to let you know that I switched the way in which you applied the date format for the reference you added to the Grilling article today. I'm sure when you check the diff you'll see why - it's not a big deal at all imho, but it might be worth a thought next time you add references to an article like that. Ta. ArbCom Elections 2016: Voting now open!

Voting in the 2016 Arbitration Committee elections is open from Monday, 00:00, 21 November through Sunday, 23:59, 4 December to all unblocked users who have registered an account before Wednesday, 00:00, 28 October 2016 and have made at least 150 mainspace edits before Sunday, 00:00, 1 November 2016.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

Cool! Nice job. That looks like a good banner to me. I am thinking about hosting a Meetup event monthly or semi-monthly to get some more local engagement and ideas. Do you have thoughts or input since you've coordinated before? It'd be great to get feedback and from other people as well.

For event meetups, the Minnesota History Center and the Minneapolis/Saint Paul libraries might be good future places. I also had some ideas for topics. I personally use AWB and other Wikipedia editor tools, so that would be something to discuss and teach for more advanced editors on using AWB, Huggle, and other tools. We have had meetups at several libraries and at the history center and we have contacts in those places who have helped arrange things. I'll notify people who have attended those so hopefully some can be at the MIA Saturday. One week notice isn't much time. Awesome, sure. If there's some folks that can't make it, doing a follow-up event for end of January I think would be good. I'm okay with staying as long as people want on Saturday, the museum is open until 5pm on Saturday. There's the Luther gallery going on that I'm sure people will want to check out. If people are interested, we might be able to go through together on one of their guided tours. The exhibit cost is around $15 for a ticket. I was planning on bringing a notebook and keeping some notes for any articles/research ideas. Tentatively, I'd say lets plan on spending the first hour for Wikipedia discussion, training, meetup and learning, then the rest with whatever people would like to do. Air filtration

I'm going to decline your speedy request, although it should be considered "without prejudice". If you would like to write about the process of air filtration (which I agree is probably a viable subject, separate from Air filter), I suggest you do so in the draft space or in your user space. Once the article is developed, I or another admin can delete the redirect and move your article then if you're not able to do so. In the meantime, while you're working on the article, the current redirect is probably the best situation. Good luck with the article drafting. Risker (talk) 05:48, 28 December 2016 (UTC)

Thanks, I am a bit confused on the process for WP:MOVE and WP:RM, it seems like this would be an uncontroversial move to move air filter to air filtration. Right now, in the wording for WP:MOVE it seems that this is the standard way to move an article under WP:BOLD unless it is seen as a controversial move. Since air filter would be a subset of air filtration, I think it makes sense to move the existing article for air filter to be air filtration as well as some possible rewrite to reflect the change. Slightly promotional material, moved to draft

Hello! I just moved the page you created—Better Cotton Initiative—to the draft space at Draft:Better Cotton Initiative. The reason I did this is because the article seems slightly promotional in content. For example: "that promotes better standards in cotton farming and practices across 24 countries worldwide", "BCI also promotes use of better irrigation practices with farmers, as well as increasing farmer's profits by reducing fertilizers which can account for up to 60% of farming costs," "BCI is also committed to promoting fair work practices including the reduction of child labor in countries such as India," etc. If you can improve it, then you can just contact me and I will move it if I think that it is acceptable, or you can just move it yourself. @RileyBugz:These statements I don't consider to be overly promotional considering that its all been independently verified. Surprising and very positive results, yes. But considering the support from several NGO's including the World Wildlife Fund initiatives with farmers since 2005, I don't think it's worth "dumbing down" since its considerably of note the efforts with improving water use, conservation and fertilizer reduction. It goes to show how crazy these things get overused. I'll see if I can find anything on notable criticisms, but these statistics seem factually solid. Yes, but the prose could use altering. For example, remove the "across 24 countries worldwide", as that sounds exactly like something that would be in a press release. Also, maybe instead of saying better practices this, better practices that, specify what those practices are. For example, say that it is against the use of x product, or for the use of x irrigation technique. This will help clear up some things. Also, I don't think that it is overly promotional, it is just sorta-kinda promotional, so that is why I didn't PROD it or anything. RileyBugz^{Yell at me} | _Edits 22:39, 16 April 2017 (UTC)

@RileyBugz:I generally agree, though I usually use my best judgement as well when pulling from company sources. I included a few other things on labor practices that I thought were more detailed on what their work included. Feel free to look into what was added and see if it looks okay for wording. Doesn't look too bad, but I think that you will need to replace stuff like "fair work practices" with something like (this is an example, IDK if it is supported) "gender equality in labour". When you are finished editing the page, type your edit summary and then choose "Review your changes".

In visual mode, you will see additions, removals, new links, and formatting highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

The wikitext diff is the same diff tool that is used in the wikitext editors and in the page history.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the VisualEditor Team has spent most of their time supporting the 2017 wikitext editor mode which is available inside the visual editor as a Beta Feature, and adding the new visual diff tool. Their workboard is available in Phabricator. You can find links to the work finished each week at mw:VisualEditor/Weekly triage meetings. Their current priorities are fixing bugs, supporting the 2017 wikitext editor as a beta feature, and improving the visual diff tool.

Recent changes

A new wikitext editing mode is available as a Beta Feature on desktop devices. The 2017 wikitext editor has the same toolbar as the visual editor and can use the citoid service and other modern tools. Go to Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures to enable the ⧼Visualeditor-preference-newwikitexteditor-label⧽.

A new visual diff tool is available in VisualEditor's visual mode. You can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. More features will be added to this later. In the future, this tool may be integrated into other MediaWiki components. [1]

The team have added multi-column support for lists of footnotes. The <references /> block can automatically display long lists of references in columns on wide screens. This makes footnotes easier to read. You can request multi-column support for your wiki. [2]

Other changes:

• You can now use your web browser's function to switch typing direction in the new wikitext mode. This is particularly helpful for RTL language users like Urdu or Hebrew who have to write JavaScript or CSS. You can use Command+Shift+X or Control+Shift+X to trigger this. [3]
• The way to switch between the visual editing mode and the wikitext editing mode is now consistent. There is a drop-down menu that shows the two options. This is now the same in desktop and mobile web editing, and inside things that embed editing, such as Flow. [4]
• The Categories item has been moved to the top of the Page options menu (from clicking on the icon) for quicker access. [5] There is also now a "Templates used on this page" feature there. [6]
• You can now create <chem> tags (sometimes used as <ce>) for chemical formulas inside the visual editor. [7]
• Tables can be set as collapsed or un-collapsed. [8]
• The Special character menu now includes characters for Canadian Aboriginal Syllabics and angle quotation marks (‹› and ⟨⟩) . The team thanks the volunteer developer, Tpt. [9]
• A bug caused some section edit conflicts to blank the rest of the page. This has been fixed. The team are sorry for the disruption. [10]
• There is a new keyboard shortcut for citations: Control+Shift+K on a PC, or Command+Shift+K on a Mac. It is based on the keyboard shortcut for making links, which is Control+K on a PC or Command+K on a Mac. [11]

Future changes

• The VisualEditor team is working with the Community Tech team on a syntax highlighting tool. It will highlight matching pairs of <ref> tags and other types of wikitext syntax. You will be able to turn it on and off. It will first become available in VisualEditor's built-in wikitext mode, maybe late in 2017. [12]
• The kind of button used to Show preview, Show changes, and finish an edit will change in all WMF-supported wikitext editors. The new buttons will use OOjs UI. The buttons will be larger, brighter, and easier to read. The labels will remain the same. You can test the new button by editing a page and adding &ooui=1 to the end of the URL, like this: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Project:Sandbox?action=edit&ooui=1 The old appearance will no longer be possible, even with local CSS changes. • The outdated 2006 wikitext editor will be removed later this year. It is used by approximately 0.03% of active editors. See a list of editing tools on mediawiki.org if you are uncertain which one you use. [14]

Axios article

Hi Shadedo,

I noticed you made an addition to the article about Axios (website) and removed the GNG notice.

I am an experienced Wikipedia editor and a paid consultant to Axios. Back when the GNG notice was still up, I did a deeper dive into the article and I have come up with a more thorough article, that I hope will move it closer to the right direction as a more solid article.

I strive to abide by the Wikipedia five pillars, especially with NPOV, but as someone with a conflict of interest here, I wonder if you could review the proposed new draft/updates and decide whether to publish these. I'm available to help in any way I can.

Did you know that you can now use the visual diff tool on any page?

Sometimes, it is hard to see important changes in a wikitext diff. This screenshot of a wikitext diff (click to enlarge) shows that the paragraphs have been rearranged, but it does not highlight the removal of a word or the addition of a new sentence.

If you enable the Beta Feature for "⧼visualeditor-preference-visualdiffpage-label⧽", you will have a new option. It will give you a new box at the top of every diff page. This box will let you choose either diff system on any edit.

Click the toggle button to switch between visual and wikitext diffs.

In the visual diff, additions, removals, new links, and formatting changes will be highlighted. Other changes, such as changing the size of an image, are described in notes on the side.

When you review your changes, you can toggle between wikitext and visual diffs. You can also enable the new Beta Feature for "Visual diffs". The Beta Feature lets you use the visual diff tool to view other people's edits on page histories and Special:RecentChanges. [15]
• Wikitext syntax highlighting is available as a Beta Feature for both the 2017 wikitext editor and the 2010 wikitext editor. [16]
• The citoid service automatically translates URLs, DOIs, ISBNs, and PubMed id numbers into wikitext citation templates. This tool has been used at the English Wikipedia for a long time. It is very popular and useful to editors, although it can be tricky for admins to set up. Other wikis can have this service, too. Please read the instructions. You can ask the team to help you enable citoid at your wiki.

• The team is planning a presentation about editing tools for an upcoming Wikimedia Foundation metrics and activities meeting.
• Wikibooks, Wikiversity, and other communities may have the visual editor made available by default to contributors. If your community wants this, then please contact Dan Garry.

While there were no large-scale bot-related discussion in the past few months, you can check WP:BOTN and WT:BOTPOL (and their corresponding archives) for smaller issues that came up.

New things

• WP:BOTDICT, a dictionary of common bot-related terms (see discussion).
• 6 inactive bots have been deflagged (see discussion).
• The 2017 Community Wishlist Survey happened. Two bot-related proposal passed, #6 deploy Article Alerts to other languages and #10 Commons deletion notification bot, although other entries may affect bots as well.
• Category:Wikipedia bots and its subcategories has had some cleanup. Bot-related pages that were historically important but are no longer of interests can be found in Category:Wikipedia bots (historical)
• The edit summary limit has been increased to 1000 characters (see T6715). If a bot you operate relied on the old truncation limit (255 characters), please review/update your code, as overly long summaries can be disruptive/annoying. If you want to use extra characters to have more information in your edit summary, please do so intelligently.
• You will soon be able to ping users from the edit summary (see T188469). If you wish to use this feature in your bot, please do so intelligently.

Upcoming

• HTML Tidy will be phased out in June 2018, or possibly earlier. This may affect some bots (see FAQ).

Highlights for this newsletter include:

ARBCOM

• Nothing particular important happened. Those who care already know, those who don't know wouldn't care. The curious can dig ARBCOM archives themselves.

BAG

• There were no changes in BAG membership since the last Bots Newsletter. Headbomb went from semi-active to active.
• In the last 3 months, only 3 BAG members have closed requests - help is needed with the backlog.

BOTREQs and BRFAs

As of writing, we have...

• 24 active BOTREQs, please help if you can!
• 5 open BRFAs and 3 BRFAs in need of BAG attention (see live status).
• 54 approved bot tasks since the start of 2018. Of note, Community Tech bot 5 (the #10 Wish on the 2017 Community Survey) was approved to notify users concerning problematic images and files from Wikimedia Commons.

Discussions

These are some of the discussions that happened / are still happening since the last Bots Newsletter. Many are stale, but some are still active.

• Use of tags by bots – Exploring the use of a new 'bot' tag.
• Mass page moves – Bot policy question/clarification about mass moves.
• Creation of redirects – Bot policy question/clarification about the creation of redirects.
• Guidance on disruptive use of semi–automated tools? – Related to meatbots (see also MOS discussion, which resulted in small addition to MOS:VAR).
• Discussion concerning WP:BOTFLAG/WP:RC – A reminder that bots should use the bot flag when it makes sense to use it (see also VPT discussion and CREATEBOT update).
• Out of curiosity... (to all bot operators) – BotPasswords vs OAuth usage amongst bot operators.
• Introducing Toolhub – Toolhub is looking for feedback.

New things

• {{Automated tools}}, a new template linking to user-activated tools and scripts has been created. It can be used in articles previews, and can be placed on any non-mainspace page/template (e.g. {{Draft article}}) to provide convenient links to editors.
• AWB 5.10.0.0 is out, after nearly 20 months without updates. If you run an old version, you will be prompted to install the new version automatically. See the changelog for what's new. Note that the next version will require .NET Framework 4.5. Many thanks to Reedy and the AWB team.
• BotWatch, "a listing of editors that have made >2 edits per minute [without] a bot flag", is being developed by SQL (see discussion).
• Massive updates and improvements have been made to Citation bot in the past few months (see discussions, discussions, discussions). You can activate the bot here, amongst other methods.
• HTML Tidy has been phased out (see Tech News #28).
• {{Newbot}} has been reorganized a bit (diff). In particular, it links to previously approved BRFAs (see discussion).
• Wikipedia:Bots#See also has been reorganized a bit (diff).
• The bot dictionary has two new entries, context bot and context-sensitive edit.
• The bot request header has been updated to include better guidance (see discussion).
• The subcategories of Category:Wikipedia bot requests for approval have been sorted in a consistent manner to make past BRFAs easier to find.

Did you know that you can use the visual editor on a mobile device?

Tap on the pencil icon to start editing. The page will probably open in the wikitext editor.

You will see another pencil icon in the toolbar. Tap on that pencil icon to the switch between visual editing and wikitext editing.

Remember to publish your changes when you're done.

You can read and help translate the user guide, which has more information about how to use the visual editor.

Since the last newsletter, the Editing Team has wrapped up most of their work on the 2017 wikitext editor and the visual diff tool. The team has begun investigating the needs of editors who use mobile devices. Their work board is available in Phabricator. Their current priorities are fixing bugs and improving mobile editing.

Recent changes

• The Editing team has published an initial report about mobile editing.
• The Editing team has begun a design study of visual editing on the mobile website. New editors have trouble doing basic tasks on a smartphone, such as adding links to Wikipedia articles. You can read the report.
• The Reading team is working on a separate mobile-based contributions project.
• The 2006 wikitext editor is no longer supported. If you used that toolbar, then you will no longer see any toolbar. You may choose another editing tool in your editing preferences, local gadgets, or beta features.
• The Editing team described the history and status of VisualEditor in this recorded public presentation (starting at 29 minutes, 30 seconds).
• The Language team released a new version of Content Translation (CX2) last month, on International Translation Day. It integrates the visual editor to support templates, tables, and images. It also produces better wikitext when the translated article is published. [18]

• The Editing team wants to improve visual editing on the mobile website. Please read their ideas and tell the team what you think would help editors who use the mobile site.
