Another DYK?
[edit]Happy weekend. I've written another article, and have a DYK in mind. Are you happy to do the honors, and get the credit, and I will do the QPQ?

- I'm not sure who put in the alt for the hook, but apart from it being longer, it doesn't obviously hook to the new article in question at all. The reader would (rightly, imho) think it is a link to what "political action committee" means. Less than stellar, perhaps, as a hook. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:71BF:46EA:CE27:4F87 (talk) 06:58, 2 July 2023 (UTC)

[edit]my story today |
Thank you for another good one! - My story today is very personal: the DYK appeared on Wikipedia's 15th birthday, and describes a concert I sang. I was requested to translate the bio into German for a memorial concert ... - see background, and we talked about life and death. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:32, 12 July 2023 (UTC)
While today's DYK highlights Santiago on his day, I did my modest share with my story today, describing what I just experienced, pictured. I began the article of the woman in green. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:17, 25 July 2023 (UTC)
Today Jahrhundertring, and I just listened to Götterdämmerung from the Bayreuth Festival (pictured), - the image (of a woman who can't believe what she has to see) features also on the article talk. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:59, 31 July 2023 (UTC)

ITN Question
[edit]Hello. I don't often contribute at ITN, so I'm not sure of the procedure for this, but what should I do if I wasn't credited for something that got posted? I contributed for Simpson Kalisher but I did not want to add myself to the credits because I don't like to edit other people's posts. Hey man im josh (talk) 14:08, 28 July 2023 (UTC)
- Well, it’s not a post that belongs to another editor, but something that another editor started. If you made a significant contribution, the only sure way of receiving a credit is to add yourself to the list. If that feels a bit out there, you can always ping the proposer via an edit summary. Interface administrator changes
- The tag filter on Special:NewPages and revision history pages can now be inverted. This allows hiding edits made by automated tools. (T334338)
- Special:BlockedExternalDomains is a new tool that allows easier blocking of plain domains (and their subdomains). This is more easily searchable and is faster for the software to use than the existing MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. It does not support regex (for complex cases), URL path-matching, or the MediaWiki:Spam-whitelist. (T337431)
- The arbitration cases named Scottywong and AlisonW closed 10 July and 16 July respectively.
- The SmallCat dispute arbitration case is in the workshop phase.
I couldn't figure out what was going on here, but the article did run at TFA back in May, and articles are only eligible to re-run after 5 years from the previous TFA appearance. Let me know if there's anything I can help with. - Dank (push to talk) 02:35, 10 August 2023 (UTC)

Your thoughts?
[edit]Hi. I wrote this new article Lindsey Halligan. I was considering trying to cobble together a DYK, perhaps mentioning her prior history and current legal focus, but wasn't sure whether that would be viewed as acceptable. Thoughts? It may be that you would prefer to see what I have in mind. Thanks. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:C23:BA62:4197:5856 (talk) 04:19, 23 August 2023 (UTC)
- "... that before Lindsey Halligan became a lawyer for Donald Trump in a criminal matter, she was an insurance lawyer?" "Trump's other Florida-based lawyer is Lindsey Halligan, a Florida insurance lawyer that handles residential and commercial claims....".
- If you think this is OK, please submit it and I will as usual do a qpq. Many thanks. (Also working on a baseball dyk I'll run by you.). --2603:7000:2101:AA00:CCC9:7E7B:26A9:1834 (talk) 16:53, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry, I'll decline this one. And sorry for not replying earlier; saw this and then forgot. This would trigger too much discussion as to whether we should run a Trump-related hook in the first place given that he's a political candidate. Maybe post a request at WT:DYK to see whether someone else is keen to nominate? Schwede66 18:58, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. I followed your advice. And trimmed the dyk, to take out mention of a candidate. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:CCC9:7E7B:26A9:1834 (talk) 19:49, 24 August 2023 (UTC)

Possible DYK
[edit]"... that Kyle Harrison struck out more batters per 9 innings in 2022 than any other minor league baseball pitcher in a season in the prior 62 years?"
- Your thoughts? Happy to do a qpq.
2603:7000:2101:AA00:CCC9:7E7B:26A9:1834 (talk) 17:04, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- I'm onto it. Schwede66 19:06, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- Bummer; this one isn't eligible. I had the nomination nearly ready but I thought to check the split that Muboshgu did from the San Francisco Giants minor league players. The prose size of what he copied across was 5100 bytes. The current prose size is 6192 bytes. Therefore, the content is not new and neither is it a 5-times expansion, and it thus does not meet DYK requirements. Sorry! Good that I checked as otherwise, you would have wasted a QPQ. Schwede66 19:26, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- Sorry - but question.
- First of all, it's the first time it's a standalone article of such size. Before, it was less than 20% when it was a standalone. It most recently was not a standalone, but was was split out from a larger article. Does it matter that it is for the first time 5x what it was as a standalone? (the rule reads "At the time of nomination, an article must be ... expanded fivefold... in the seven days preceding a nomination.)
- Second, and this is for me to check, but I think I expanded the non-standalone from which it was split a lot in the prior days .. but have to check how much. --2603:7000:2101:AA00:CCC9:7E7B:26A9:1834 (talk) 19:43, 24 August 2023 (UTC)
- First, it has to be new content. Using content from another article does not count as new. Second, I’ve worked it out for you; see above. It’s a 1.2 times expansion; nowhere near 5 times. Schwede66 10:28, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Ah. I didn't know, and couldn't find any rule about expansion. Thanks for letting me know. An odd thing about it - if one writes content within a larger article, and if the increase is 5x as to the subject that will be split out, one can't then seek a DYK for it (if the larger page is not increased 5x). But then if two weeks later one splits it out, one still can't seek a DYK on the new page. Perhaps a bit of a catch-22. Very much appreciate your sage advice, and checking the size - above and beyond. You're an awesome wikipedian. Bet. 2603:7000:2101:AA00:948B:39F8:685B:16A6 (talk) 18:48, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thank you; appreciate your kind words. The newness rule is explained at WP:DYK5X. Schwede66 19:29, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Thanks. Interestingly, that rule does not appear to address the instance of splitting, leading to the creation of a new article. Or, as in this case, an article that is more than 5x the size of its prior standalone article. It says: "This calculation is made from 'the last version of the article' before the expansion began ..." Which perhaps lends itself, I would think, to the position that what we look at is only standalone articles for this purpose. For the reasons above, I see this as having some logic to it. But I can understand, as this is less than clear, others having a differing view.2603:7000:2101:AA00:948B:39F8:685B:16A6 (talk) 23:17, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- Yeah, that's fair enough. It's not super-explicit. Let me copy Theleekycauldron into this conversation as she maintains the rules. And perhaps there's a need to move this discussion to WP:TDYK if we want to tweak the text. Schwede66 23:25, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- The relevant rule on splits is actually in WP:DYKLEN:
Splits from non-new articles are ineligible, but if the copied text does not exceed one-fifth of the total prose size, the article can be considered eligible as a fivefold expansion of the copied text.
So the copied text isn't new, but if you can fivefold expand it with new text, that would count. theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 00:05, 26 August 2023 (UTC) - I've created WP:DYKSPLIT as a shortcut for future reference :) theleekycauldron (talk • contribs) (she/her) 00:05, 26 August 2023 (UTC)

Capitalisation
[edit]Evening Schwede66,
Just going over the capitalisation of the word 'homestead' in those planned pages on my user page, you've suggested they be lowercased. I would have thought that the titles of those future articles would be capitalised. This would be in keeping with with other homesteads/buildings, i.e., Riccarton House, Homebush Homestead and Linwood House, just to name a few and the fact they are pronouns.
Let me know what you think!
Cheers, Lord A.Nelson (talk) 07:21, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
- It depends whether the "homestead" part belongs to the common name. For example, Riccarton House is clearly the name of the building and it is never abbreviated to just Riccarton. "Homestead", on the other hand, may be part of a name (if so, you’d capitalise it) or is may be a descriptor (in which case, you can leave it off and when you do use it, it’s lower case). It’s sometimes a judgement call. Schwede66 10:25, 25 August 2023 (UTC)
What does "df=y" mean in infoboxes?
[edit]Can you explain to me please? Thanks. Hamtrane (talk) 12:37, 30 August 2023 (UTC)
- Sure, Hamtrane. It means "day first" and the output of the date will be in dmy format (e.g. 31 August 2023). Without that parameter, the date will be shown in mdy format (e.g. August 31, 2023). Most countries use dmy format. You can find more info on date formats at MOS:DATEFORMAT. Schwede66 16:55, 30 August 2023 (UTC)

[edit]Hi. Would you be interested in perhaps posting this expanded DYK? I of course would do the required check of another DYK. (Not your sport here, I know).
