I have sent you a note about a page you started

Hello, SaryaniPaschtorr. Thank you for your work on Symphonienjahr. User:AngusWOOF, while examining this page as a part of our page curation process, had the following comments:

This term needs to be clarified whether it is well-known for the period.

Hi @AngusWOOF: all three of the terms you have raised questions about come up in Schumann scholarship. To my knowledge "year of chamber music" has only ever been applied to Schumann. I have seen "Symphonienjahr" (in German, but never in English) used to talk about Mozart's work in 1773, but this is not at all a widely used term amongst Mozart scholars or other writers on the subject. Meanwhile, it is quite common in literature on Schumann.
SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 18:30, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
SaryaniPaschtorr, can you write them up into the article as you did with Year of Song? Did you see the hatnote I put in for that? AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 19:32, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
It also needs to be a fairly well known term, like if someone outside of Schumann scholars heard it they would immediately associate it with Schumann, e.g. Year of the Woman. AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 19:34, 5 May 2023 (UTC)
AngusWOOF, I did not write the term Year of Song into the article originally, but since you asked I have added reference to the other two. On the question of notability: these are terms you will often see given in discussion of the life of Schumann. I regret that not many people besides Schumann scholars tend very often to discuss the life of Schumann(!) But the terms are unambiguously attached to him, and you'll find them in popular biographies etc. Maybe a useful bit of anecdotal evidence is in Googling "Year of Symphonies" and "Year of Chamber Music" (with quotes) — all the hits using those terms as proper nouns are discussing Schumann; same for Google Books specifically.

This needs to be clarified if this is a well-known term that pertains mainly to Schumann. That he has certain years specific to writing symphonies or chamber music doesn't mean he gets to claim the term.

Guidance

@Gerda Arendt, you may not be interested or the correct person, but you were the first editor that came to mind. SaryaniPaschtorr is a well-meaning editor who seems to most interested in Robert Schumann (Saryani correct me if I am wrong) but new to Wikipedia so do not want to frustrate them to the point of leaving. Appreciate any guidance you can offer them. Saryani, another place to seek guidance is the Teahouse. S0091 (talk) 21:46, 8 May 2023 (UTC)

I have resubmitted the Medtner stub — I wonder if the added sources will do for you? I'm reluctant to add interlinear citations to such a short article. Thanks for the message anyhow, would be glad to hear from Gerda Arendt. SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 21:53, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
I am interested and one of the right persons, but I just had the busiest weekend of the decade and slowly catching up. Please be patient. I have two articles waiting about people who recently died, and that has priority before I can even look into it. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 06:57, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

S0091 (talk) 21:57, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Hey - I have dredged up an old journal article from JSTOR and resubmitted. By the way I find https://www.medtner.org.uk as reliable a secondary source as any. It's not a forum or a blog, but a reference website long run by the Medtner expert and statistician Chris Crocker. SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 22:18, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
In order for Chris Croker's site to meet the blog exception (see WP:BLOG, it is written by him with no editorial oversight, etc.), you would need to prove he is an accepted authority on this topic by other sources. The site contains, at least in my searching, no information about Crocker or why he would be considered an expert nor, at a quick look, could I find him cited by other publications. If you want him to be accepted as a reliable source, I suggest starting a discussion at WP:RSN to gain consensus which will make it easier to use his site going forward. I will leave the draft to another reviewer to assess the other source you added (best to have more than one eye). S0091 (talk) 22:48, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
Fair enough. Chris Crocker licenses many manuscript score photographs out, so is sort of all over the place; his website is probably the best general-purpose resource on Medtner. He's cited in some articles and a few doctoral dissertations on Medtner.
Thanks for taking the time to reply in any case. SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 23:10, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
What would be extremely helpful is if he cited his sources which then could be cited rather than him directly.  :) Anyway, good luck with the draft and any in the future. Also, at this point given you are autoconfirmed, you have no obligation to submit your drafts through AfC. You can simply move them to article space directly, where they will be reviewed by WP:NPP. Usually, if they think an article is not ready, they move them back to draft where the noted issues can be rectified and either moved back to article or submitted to AfC. The worst case scenario is being nominated for deletion, where it will get community input. S0091 (talk) 23:23, 8 May 2023 (UTC)
If you're satisfied the subject is notable, I'll do that. SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 11:00, 9 May 2023 (UTC)

Five Pieces in Folk Style moved to draftspace

An article you recently created, Five Pieces in Folk Style, is not suitable as written to remain published. While it appears to be notable, it needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. There are large sections which are wholly uncited. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. I did this rather than removing the uncited material in the article, which I felt would be more disruptive. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to ask on my talk page. When you have the required sourcing (and every assertion needs a source), and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Or feel free to ping me to take another look.Onel5969 TT me 10:01, 19 May 2023 (UTC)

Hey Onel5969—thanks for the message. Though they are of course important, I'm not sure I agree with you about inline citations, especially since no guideline (including those you have linked) says that articles with too few of them should be expunged from mainspace.
This seems like a pretty drastic move. All the information found in the article may be traced in sources cited at the bottom of the page; no controversial claim is made; most of the information is uncontestable biographical detail: just because this isn't an A-Class article it should go back to the drawing board? There are many live mainspace articles with no sources or only one source cited. I'd say this article is doing as well as or better than average.
As it happens I don't have time at the moment to work on this, so I can't help feeling you've done not much more than condemn the article to death in draftspace, where it is not likely to see improvement in the near future. What are templates like {{citation needed}} and {{More citations needed}} for, if not circumstances like this?

Thank you for your work on compositions by Schumann! I am sorry if I was not nice enough in move discussions, - I didn't check that you are new here, being on vacation. I know how frustrating they can be, having proposed that The Flying Dutchman (opera) be named Der fliegende Holländer. It took a few years ;) - Wikipedia favours the status quo, quite consistently so, and I hope that you will be able to live with it. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:22, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Thank you for your message, @Gerda Arendt, and I hope you enjoyed your vacation. It's fine – you were perfectly nice! And I can certainly live with preference for the status quo. I am well enough used to organisations etc. where it is king. SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 15:16, 16 June 2023 (UTC)

Trying to get Draft:Myrthen into a good state in article space for 12 September

Hi, I was having a chat with User:Gerda Arendt about certain composers' wedding presents to their wives and out of that we thought it would be nice to get Myrthen into a state to be listed in DYK in time for the Schumann anniversary on 12 September. Are you interested? And is there a reason why you stopped partway through translating the article from the German? Dronkle (talk) 21:02, 2 August 2023 (UTC)

Hi Dronkle – I have just seen your messages on the talk page for that draft. The only real reason I never finished the translation is laziness/being very busy, depending on how generous you are inclined to be. I also felt the German article, including the part I have translated already, has too strong a focus on subjective/arguable points of analysis and is rooted too narrowly in fairly few sources.
I would be delighted to help bring it up to scratch for September; it's a lovely idea. Maybe now if I stay up (else tomorrow) I'll plough through some more of/the rest of the untranslated bit.
SaryaniPaschtorr (talk) 23:08, 5 August 2023 (UTC)
Glad to have you on board given the work you have already done. Dronkle (talk) 07:42, 7 August 2023 (UTC)

Clara Schumann

September songs
my story today

On her birthday: the Myrthen didn't make it on her wedding day, nor on her birthday (today) but will be featured, probably on 18 September, which gives us time to complete the article. -- Gerda Arendt (talk) 18:01, 13 September 2023 (UTC)

DYK for Myrthen

On 7 November 2023, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Myrthen, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that Eric Sams remarked "what bride ever had a finer wedding gift?" of the song collection Myrthen (Myrtles), which Robert Schumann dedicated to Clara? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Myrthen. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Myrthen), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

November songs
my story today

Thank you for the article! It's one of three items on the Main page, almost too much of a good thing! Bach's amazing cantata with the unusual scale, first performed 300 years ago OTD, the nun for the prostitutes, and Schumann's wedding gift for Clara. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:09, 7 November 2023 (UTC)
