Future of article

[edit]

The article is now at Top-16 snooker players. It is questionable whether this article should exist. "Almost a champion" is not an encyclopedically defining characteristic of someone, generally. I've not nominated it for deletion (yet), as I think a broader discussion needs to happen with regard to what to do about articles of this sort (especially with regard to sports). I will bring the matter up at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Sports if you are interested. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 19:56, 7 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Mark Williams

[edit]

Hi, what is your ref. for the "Sprog" nickname? A "citation" tag will be needed otherwise. All the best, bigpad (talk) 13:03, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is where I found out this was his nickname, if you look at his profile on here: http://www.snooker.org/plr/bio/mwilliams.shtml Samasnookerfan (talk) 13:13, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That's Hermund's site and the data very old but fair enough!! Still, maybe better for us to put the wider known nickname first: are you ok to do this? bigpad (talk) 14:02, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, no problem at all. Samasnookerfan (talk) 14:05, 7 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've reverted your last edit to the above as there's too much speculation it it: "widely considered" etc. There was nothing wrong with my tidy-up of the intro. Please don't revise it. But keep up the good work of adding *facts where more facts are needed or useful in various articles (e.g. that Hendry has equalled Davis' record of 20 years in the Top-16). Intros to articles need to be clean and punchy, not cluttered. bigpad (talk) 19:21, 20 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the message on My Talk. You're a font of snooker information. I think the key is where to add it into various articles. I didn't know Williams was colour blind .bigpad (talk) 10:24, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Hi there, you have done a lot of work on Mark Williams and it is well researched; good on you! On the other hand, and at the risk of sounding churlish, I wonder if it, and articles of other leading snooker players, need to be so biographical and to document their careers year by year or match by natch, almost? The article is part of an enclyopedia and not a potted biography. Let's imagine that a reader is curious about snooker and checks out the articles on the leading players. Would he or she be prepared to read through a blow-by-blow account of their career? Probably not. But if the player's main achievements were documented with perhaps a summary of career highlights, not necessarily covering every year, wouldn't the effect be better? I was referred to the article on Adam Gilchrist as one that was very good. I don't agree actually but it could be a model for you to follow.

So my advice would be to make sure that the key information is there: cut out things that are not necessary (e.g. the ref. to being beaten by a heavier boxer) and see how you progress. I might add this reply to the Williams' talk page and see what people think. All the best, bigpad (talk) 21:36, 29 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Re:Great Images

[edit]

Hi Samas,
Thanks for your kind compliments - I appreciate it! :) Congrats on your own pictures - they've got interesting subject matter and good composition/focus. The only thing I think that's letting you down in terms of image quality is your camera! Anyway thanks again, --Fir0002 22:51, 10 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

List of snooker referees

[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article List of snooker referees, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process. All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page. Also, please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. If you agree with the deletion of the article, and you are the only person who has made substantial edits to the page, please add {{db-author}} to the top of List of snooker referees.

Now that all of that boilerplate is out of the way: This list serves no purpose not served by Category:Snooker referees. There are already way, way too many redundant snooker lists; it will be a lot more productive for you to work on improving existing articles instead of creating more lists that will probably either be deleted or merged.  :-) — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 04:55, 21 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Point taken, and thats what i'm focusing on now anyway. Samasnookerfan (talk) 15:48, 22 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

snookerseason 08-09

your idea for the change of 'begin/end' to 'date' is probably better, i did this before i put the prem.leauge in it. Derjaeger (talk) 13:37, 15 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Refs

[edit]

Not to be a critic, especially given the sheer volume of work that you do on snooker articles, but adding another source, between {{Refbegin}} and {{Refend}} to the References section of an article without actually making an inline <ref ...> ... </ref> citation as to what this source is actually supposed to be a source for is pretty much useless to the reader (and this will not go unnoticed at WP:GAC, who will block such articles from achieving Good Article status, much less Featured Article status). About the only thing that should be done this way is a general player bio at World Snooker (or some similar site), and even that is questionable. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 01:11, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

PS: That actually did sound more critical than I intended! Sorry; I was in a hurry, so I wrote brusquely. I consider you one of the more important snooker contributors here. — SMcCandlish [talk] [cont] ‹(-¿-)› 04:59, 16 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Image:Grd3.JPG is now available on Wikimedia Commons as Commons:Image:Cordulegaster boltonii Grd3.jpg. This is a repository of free media that can be used on all Wikimedia wikis. The image will be deleted from Wikipedia, but this doesn't mean it can't be used anymore. You can embed an image uploaded to Commons like you would an image uploaded to Wikipedia, in this case: [[Image:Cordulegaster boltonii Grd3.jpg]]. Mass changes to snooker player articles

[edit]

I have some concerns over multiple changes to the snooker articles. Can you please let me know what you think at Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Snooker#Mass_vandalism Betty Logan (talk) 14:13, 6 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for replying. It seems to have settled, but the 'nationality' attribute does periodically cause confusion. I still think we would be better of changing 'nationality' to 'country' to make a clear distinction between a player's playing nationality and their legal citizenship. Betty Logan (talk) 19:15, 5 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can you please choose a license for this image. I would like to move it to Commons. Thanks! Rocket000 (talk) 02:48, 12 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yep, I've been trying to move it too. You just need to say what permissions you're giving for it's use before it can be moved to Commons. I was going to use it in the Irish Wiktionary Irish Wiktionary for instance. ☸ Moilleadóir 14:55, 18 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, that's all we needed! It's now on Commons. Thanks again! Cheers, Rocket000 (talk)

Unreferenced BLPs

[edit]

Hello Samasnookerfan! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 2 of the articles that you created are Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons. Please note that all biographies of living persons must be sourced. If you were to add reliable, secondary sources to these articles, it would greatly help us with the current 198 article backlog. Once the articles are adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Here is the list:

  1. Wayne Jones (snooker player) - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL
  2. Jin Long - Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL

Suggestion

If you don't want to update your age at you userpage every year, than you can use {{Age}}. Happy editing, Armbrust Talk to me Contribs 22:54, 19 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

In this edit summary you say the person on the photo isn't Michael White. Do you know who is on the picture? I ask because the file should be renamed if he isn't Michael White, but I don't know who he is. Armbrust Talk to me about my editsreview 14:55, 21 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Hi I don't know who it is, but it definetly isn't him. I am on friendly terms with him and see him in the club I play regularly. Check other pics for comparison. Couldn't tell you who it is though. Where did you find the picture? All the best and keep up the excellent work. Samasnookerfan (talk) 00:43, 23 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

WP Snooker in the Signpost

[edit]

The WikiProject Report would like to focus on WikiProject Snooker for a Signpost article. This is an excellent opportunity to draw attention to your efforts and attract new members to the project. Would you be willing to participate in an interview? If so, here are the questions for the interview. Just add your response below each question and feel free to skip any questions that you don't feel comfortable answering. Multiple editors will have an opportunity to respond to the interview questions, so be sure to sign your answers. If you know anyone else who would like to participate in the interview, please share this with them. Have a great day. -Mabeenot (talk) 16:55, 19 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article List of top 16 snooker players has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Not convinced it meets WP:N, and while there is coverage of the current top 16 for seeding purposes, there is no secondary coverage of players that have been in the top 16, and therefore not maintainable. It was vaguely relevant when the rankings were updated once a year, but now they are updated after each event and players move in and out of the top 16 sometimes without attaining a top 16 seeding. I really don't see how this list can be brought up to date.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Betty Logan (talk) 16:26, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]
