I wasn't trying to be inflammatory. In the Wikipedia:Guide_to_deletion#Shorthands it list cruft as an example of specialized jargon used to communicate efficiently. I was only trying to communicate efficiently. However, I will take your advice and will refrain from using it anymore in the AfD discussion--Geedubber 20:35, 6 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Swamphen

[edit]

Quote you "I'm also a little unclear about the pukeko bit - surely that is the name for it in New Zealand? Never heard it called anything else when I was there. Surely it's a Maori word that has been coopted by New Zealand English?"

Yes the pukeko is the New Zealand Maori name for it, and it has been absorbed into NZ English. Pukeko is used in favour of "purple Swamphen" here in almost all conversational cases, infact I know people who don't even know that it's other name is the purple swamphen.

If you are wondering why I'm posting here it's because where you origionally had this it would be horribly out of date in the discussion. - Faded_Mantis 10:57, 7 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FYROM/ROM

[edit]

I appreciate your comment. There is a big difference though which I'll try to explain. It's not only about the name. See how many places are called Macedonia without anybody objecting. This is indeed a form of flattery and it would be a totally foolish thing to object. But these guys state that every Macedonian tradition from ancient times is theirs and irrelevant to Greece. They consider that ancient Macedon had nothing to do with Greece, Alexander the Great was an enemy to the Greeks, they consider that even now there is a Macedonian ethnicity opressed by the Greeks (inside Greece). So what they are trying to do is not adopt a name out of respect and flattery to Greece, but appropriate the name and completely remove any connection of it with Greece. --Avg 18:16, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Perhaps you haven't seen my user page, I also live in Britain so I know a couple things about this beautiful place :-) Now, Britain is more of a topological reference, not an ethnological, even if lately there is considerable effort in instilling "Britishness" to the minds of people. Most people will still say "I'm Welsh" or "I'm a Scot" rather than "I'm British". Now as far as I know there are no pre-Roman Britons still in existence. But (and this perhaps is an ethnic myth, I admit that), for hundreds (if not thousands) of years, Greek Macedonians were believing that they were the direct ascendants of Philip and Alexander. Let me give you another example which I find similar. Say that hypothetically Yugoslavia reached parts of Northern Italy. Right there, in Northern Italy, as late as 1946, a province of Yugoslavia was arbitrarily named by Tito "Socialist Republic of Rome". A Slavic population who were living there and gained independence in 1991, decide to call themselves "Romans". They'd claim that Italians nowadays don't have any relationship whatsoever with Romans and they'd name their new-found country "Republic of Rome", even if they know that there is already another Rome where Italians live. They would start teaching to their children that they are the ascendants of Julius Caesar, they would start naming their children with ancient Roman names, they would put on their flag Roman symbols, they would claim that there is a single Roman ethnicity and they are the bearers of it, they would even claim that there is "Roman" population living in Italy under Italian rule waiting to be liberated. And of course, they would file complaints to every organisation in the world because bad Italy opresses them and does not allow them to use the name that they want, because it's self-determination after all. Perhaps you find this absurd and way over the top, but I'm just trying to explain how Greek Macedonians feel. Just for you to better understand what these guys claim, have a look at this user from FYROM: --Avg 23:48, 10 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

That's fair enough. The most important aspect of WP is to present all POVs and let the reader decide. Let's hope that this article does that.--Avg 09:11, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I noticed your vote on this page and you mentioned 'formal name' - FYROM is not the formal name of the Republic of Macedonia. It is just a name that a few countries - mostly Greece - use to refer to the Republic of Macedonia. I just read your comment on Avg's page and am glad to say we agree. - FrancisTyers 08:41, 15 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I noticed you took a look at this article I've been working on. Thanks. I have reedited some. Could you take another look. I'm not an ornithologist but have been interested in birds for some years. I didn't know anything about this bird but it was mentioned in the Antarctica article and I just got to looking around the net. References are on the discussion page. Criticism is welcome. --Droll 02:43, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I’m the user that was formerly known as Bitola. I decided to make some changes (changes are always welcomed from time to time) and I created a new user account. I was pretty much involved in the Macedonian articles heated area for several months and these days I will take some rest from all that bickering. In the same time, I would like to thank you for your voting and comments (I think people from outside can see things more neutrally then we that live here). MatriX 17:22, 11 April 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Birds

[edit]

Hello. You seem to know a thing or two about birds, so I thought I'd ask you. Are there any set rules in the capitalization of their names, and if so, which of the 1.1 million pedia articles explains me that? For example, the article here says White-faced Storm-petrel, but I've also seen white-faced storm petrel in use. Some googling shows me that there is quite a variety there. I'm meaning to add a whole bunch of birds on Wiktionary, but I wanted to check first on this, since Wikt is case-sensitive. Can you help me, or do you know somebody who can? Thanks in advance. Mekosuchinae

[edit]

I hope you don't terribly mind my forceful moving of "Mekosuchine crocodiles" to "Mekosuchinae". However as the animals are extinct and have no widely recognized vernacular that doesn't use the subfamily designation, I though it better to use the subfamily name just to keep things simple. Bird taxonomy

[edit]

Thanks for the message. I am new to big edits on the bird pages, being more of a creepy-crawlies man, but I decided to try a bit of boldness. I can understand the allure of stability but HBW seems to be too static a reference point for a dynamic resource like WP. I have tried to retain references to previous taxonomies while giving precedence to the latest taxonomic thought. I will post a note on the project page as further feedback will be most welcome. Thanks again! Richard Barlow 08:41, 15 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

License tagging for Image:Wrentit.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Wrentit.jpg. Wikipedia gets hundreds of images uploaded every day, and in order to verify that the images can be legally used on Wikipedia, the source and copyright status must be indicated. Images need to have an image tag applied to the image description page indicating the copyright status of the image. This uniform and easy-to-understand method of indicating the license status allows potential re-users of the images to know what they are allowed to do with the images.

For more information on using images, see the following pages:

This is an automated notice by OrphanBot. If you need help on selecting a tag to use, or in adding the tag to the image description, feel free to post a message at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions. 00:10, 2 July 2006 (UTC)

Go ahead & nominate, and I'll do what I can to deal with any issues that get raised. One painful bit (converting references to cite format) is out of the way. How's the fieldwork btw? I got round to it at last! I've done various bits of minor tinkering here & there, hopefully all of which you'll feel are useful. I've not gone through all my peer review comments, as I'm sure you'll have done that thoroughly yourself. I think I can spot just one problem that's at all serious, and I've left a comment about that on the FAC page. A superb piece of work! SP-KP 23:01, 14 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. Thanks for expressing your concerns with this FAC. I've responded to your query on the FAC page. I hope it addresses any misgivings you have. Ryu Kaze 20:12, 15 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

FF7

[edit]

Ah, forgive me; I wasn't attempting to be incivil, I was just trying to nip any issues in the bud. Ryu and myself have been on the verge of burning out for a while now, so we've been a little snappy to a lot of people without noticing. It was definitely not geared toward you, it was geared toward the concept in general, showing what we were going through without trying to put you in the middle. I wasn't trying to deem you a deletionist, I was trying to explain how we were trying to find middle ground. So while it may have been quite frank, I certainly didn't snap or anything, I was just trying to be upfront :) In terms of taking an aggressive appraoch toward critics, I rarely do so; accepting criticism is one of the things I usually pride myself with. I just tend to state my case, as does Ryu; we were also just tired of the length issues in general ^_^ — Deckiller 06:36, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, in looking at the entire FAC, I'm alarmed at my comments to a degree; they are way out of my character. See, we've been dealing with these same objections for the last 5 FACs we've done as a team, so we've just been getting used to the same three objections :). Matter of fact, I'm supposed to be on Wikibreak to calm my overheating after spending the last two months editing nonstop XD. Yeah, I agree; Pokemon should have enough development info, since it's extremely popular. If I ever get around to it, I'd love to give the pokefans a hand in getting their main article featured. That'll probably be after the star wars reorganization and the Woonsocket Rhode Island push...and the rewrite of the Xenosaga articles....a Wikipedian's work is never done! — Deckiller 06:48, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wish I wasn't so addicted :(. There was a time about a month ago where I was going to push for b-crat, but the political restrictions are just too massive; you have to tailor your account to please the voters (the sad thing is that RfA is turning into such an issue, as well). — Deckiller 07:12, 16 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

-Thanks for suggesting the merge of the Fulmar and fulmar page. I'm new and still learning..............I ended up using a previously used page rather than creating a new one. I thought that we in Europe and North America could use a seperate link for Northern Fulmar. Hope it makes sense. Let me know if you have suggestions. I'll be spending my time over the next few weeks completing and editing the regularly seen species in North America...........I'm a pretty active birdwatcher (637 North American twitches, and yes I love the open ocean........Saw a note on standardizing species list to Sibley.....Is that the thought now?

Thanks for the info on Northern Fulmar. If I have some time I'll try to seperate out Southern Fulmar. Probably not a big deal for now as you say........

Marbled/Long-billed Murrelet Split (and a couple others)

[edit]

I've now split Marbled and Long-billed Murrelet. Tried to keep as much of the info you wrote for each of the species. Take a look at them and let me know what you think. Got your message on Kittiwake. Probably should have left Fulmar alone in retrospect. I'll leave them together for now as you suggest. Makes sense until more info an be gathered for each of the species. Craveri's Murrelet is done.... Saw the disussion on Little/Least tern.......sounds good to me..... Let me know if I can help you in any way................... pmeleski

An extra note on the refs on jaguar

[edit]

I think I may have side-tracked things by getting into the meta-issue of primary/secondary/tertiary. I'm trying to take care of the concerns and don't want to seem defensive.

Rather than clutter that page further, I thought I'd mention one thing on your talk that's been difficult with the page: there appears to be a relative dearth of sources on this animal. Try "breeding success" in http://scholar.google.com preceded by the common name of the four Panthera: Lion 934 hits, tiger 401, leopard 353, jaguar 50. I tried this with various terms ("mortality", "endemism", "conservation status") and in each case there is around an order of magnitude difference in sources versus the other cats. I don't want to make excuses—I'll keep looking for any info that's been pointed out as absent. It's just been difficult. Marskell 18:18, 6 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Good luck with your own work. I skipped PR on this one--perhaps I shouldn't have, but it so often produces no results.
I've definitely looked at refs within refs, but often then run into problem two: not on-line or not accessible if it is. I sent some I need to Peta, who will hopefully be able to find them through his library. Cheers, Marskell 17:29, 7 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Regarding your name, it'll be Seabird from me from now on. And why not, with the exceptional featured article we now have on the topic! Well done. I found this with just the paragraph I need on cubs/parenting but it's no good as a reference :(. Cheers, Marskell 17:13, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Sabine's Sunbird, You probably don't remember, but you were the first user to leave me a personalized note back when I was but a wee wiki-lad. I just ran across you again and, noticing that you were on your second FA, was wondering if you were interested in adminship. You have less than the breakneck rate of edits or the edits to the project space pages that some voters look for, but I figure that you've been around long enough to prove your sanity. Arctic Tern advertising calls

[edit]

Thank you for your help with that article, and for your support in making it featured. However, it needs a little more. You expanded the paragraph on that's species' call, and in particular added the following: "The advertising call is social in nature, made when returning to the colony and during aggressive encounters between individuals. It is unique to the bird and as such is similar to the bird song of passerines."

Spangineer has objected because he or she feels that the sentence "It is unique to the bird and as such is similar to the bird song of passerines." is not clear. From the context, I think it is clear that each individual Arctic Tern's advertising call is unique, the same way each human voice is unique, but I need to ask you to make sure. Does the sentence mean that each individual bird's advertising call is different, or does it mean that the Arctic Tern is the only tern to have an advertising call, or does it mean that the Arctic Tern's advertising call is different from tha advertising call of other birds? Thanks. Miss Madeline | Talk to Madeline 21:50, 23 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I read some papers from the Procellariidae page and reviewed systematics and taxonomy of Puffinus accordingly. You might want to check it out as you're the expert around, especially Audubon's Shearwater and the Manx Shearwater.

Also, what do you make of this? Is the ID certain; the quality is not very good and the upperside pattern of Buller's and some Pterodroma is similar? Help needed on Conservation Biology

[edit]

Hi There,

I saw that you took an interest in the Conservation biology article awhile back. I was hoping you might come back for awhile and work on the article. For awhile now it has just been two editors, myself and another, and neither one of us has the expertise to substantively improve the article beyond a certain point. Also, there is disagreement on a few things, and without additional qualified editors involved, it may become difficult to resolve some of the disagreements, and there is a risk that it may start to look like one or the other of us is trying to own the article. It is definitely a situation with too few cooks, and I would like to see more qualified editors join in for awhile. The article has been substantially improved since you last posted on its Talk page, but still has a long way it could go.--Margareta 21:12, 18 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for coming by. Any time you have some time to contribute is fine, and if you know anyone else--through Wikipedia or in the real world--who would be a good contributor to that article, please point them that way. Good luck on your program.--Margareta 01:55, 19 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
