How Can I fix this?
[edit]You guys are great and fix so much, how can I fix this: The bot says Image copyright problem with Image:Spain ycl.jpg although when I uploaded it I explained the copywrite as my own. I tried to re-load the image again with what I thought was this tag:
I, the copyright holder of this work, hereby grant the permission to copy, distribute and/or modify this document under the terms of the GNU Free Documentation License, Version 1.2 or any later version published by the Free Software Foundation; with no Invariant Sections, no Front-Cover Texts, and no Back-Cover Texts.
This template should only be used on file pages. |
If this file is eligible for relicensing, it may also be used under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 3.0 license. The relicensing status of this image has not yet been reviewed. You can help. |
I just can't seem to find anywhere on the image description page that I can modify and thus drop in the copywrite.
A little help please! --Johan1917 (talk) 07:16, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

Aggressive Tone of Messages
[edit]Today, I uploaded an image and forgot to specify the license. I have made the mistake before, but this time this particular bot catches. I believe that the messages are a bit too aggressive in tone, assuming that the person is in violation of copyright law. It uses a red warning symbol, which is usually used for warnings of possible consequences, while all other image bots use either no icon, the blue warning symbol, or the blue information symbol. You need to relax the tone a bit, increasing the tone if the fair use information is not specified. connor.carey (talk) 23:06, 18 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]Sorry. I'm a bear of simple brain. The Wikipedia template seems to say a book cover is fair usage if it is "to illustrate an article discussing the book in question". This isn't exactly an article about the book, but it's an article about the author of the autobiography and illustrates the section of the article which is about the publication of the autobiography. Is this not fair usage? (A genuine question - I'm only asking...) —Preceding unsigned comment added by Thejohnfleming (talk • contribs) 01:18, 27 December 2007 (UTC)

[edit]I just wrote up the fair use rationale as you sent the message to me. Fdssdf (talk) 22:04, 3 January 2008 (UTC)
This image HAS a non-free use rationale - and I will add that I finf the "instructions" at the top of this page aggressive, obscure, and a breach of WP:AGF - please re-word them so that they are readable and understandable by those of us who are not copyright lawyers, and are less argumentative in tone. Thank you. DuncanHill (talk) 01:08, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Gee, you're right, it has a rationale! You've met WP:NFCC#10c! Unfortunately, by not having a copyright tag, you were violating #6 and either #10a or #10b. I guess that's why the bot left a no tag message rather than a no rationale message? Thanks for letting me know that the bot knows what it's doing. Did you have a complaint about the bot's actual editing? --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹnoɟʇs(st47) 11:38, 4 January 2008 (UTC)
- Maybe if the bot's talk page was more helpful and explanatory, and less aggressive, obscure and obnoxious in tone, then I would have understood what it was trying to do. Maybe also, if it wasn't so trigger-happy and allowed editors a reasonable amount of time before messaging people while they are still working on a new image, I would have been able to correctly complete my first ever upload and tagging of a non-free use image without having to interact with you. And finally, maybe if you responded in a more helpful and supportive way to those of us who are actually trying to build an encyclopædia, things would be more pleasant and productive all round.I notice you didn't bother to resp[ond to my point about the useless instructions at the top of the page. - Image copyright problem with Image:Puddingstone Rock Legend Sign.JPG
Thank you for uploading Image:Puddingstone Rock Legend Sign.JPG. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the image. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.
- If you have any questions, please feel free to ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thanks again for your cooperation. NOTE: once you correct this, please remove the tag from the image's page. STBotI (talk) 02:00, 12 January 2008 (UTC)

The image was already tagged with {{logo fur}}, which put it into Category:Non-free images with valid backlink. Thus, I don't think the bot should have tagged it as having no copyright info; it was clearly non-free, with a valid rationale. Superm401 - Talk 22:41, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Don't bite the newcomers
[edit]Hi STBotl:
I think that when the first message a newcomer gets on their talk page,
- comes 6 minutes after their first edit,
- starts with a red warning triangle, and
- is about image tagging and copyright (perhaps the most incomprehensible subject in the entire Wikiverse),
then that newcomer is likely to feel they have been bitten.
The example I'm concerned about is Singaporeano, but this is presumably happening fairly frequently.
Feedback please. Wanderer57 (talk) 13:53, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

Inserting an extra line
[edit]OK, this is (I appreciate) exceedingly left-brained word fetishist, but on the presumption that you tell the bot what to "type" when inserting a warning, can you tell it to remove the extra line that it seems to insert? Have a look at this diff and you'll see that there are spare lines inserted before the bot starts its warning. Can that be fixed? It is an issue I've noticed with other bots (the copyright check bot, for instance), but I've just come across an instance so thought I'd raise it. Thanks! gb (t, c) 19:53, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- I usually do that to make sure there's enough space after the previous message. If the previous message has no blank lines after it, you need two linebreaks to add one before you add the header. Without the lines, it'd get all messed up. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹnoɟʇs(st47) 20:48, 6 February 2008 (UTC)

Your bot again
[edit]Hey, just wanted to let you know that if you did change anything with your bot, it hasn't helped the problem. It is still tagging every single image I upload as "having no rationale" when anyone with an ounce of brains can see that is not true. I am starting to get extremely annoyed by this sort of behavior from yours and other editor's bots as my talk page has become swamped with bogus messages in the past few months - as you have seen for yourself. If you could please do something to fix this issue as soon as possible, I would very much appreciate it. Thanks. -- Grandpafootsoldier (talk) 23:31, 6 February 2008 (UTC)
- Either make a separate section header for the rationale or use the templates which should be mentioned at WP:NFURG. The information section isn't meant to be used for rationales. --uǝʌǝsʎʇɹnoɟʇs(st47) 01:22, 7 February 2008 (UTC)
- Well, it seems I am behind the times then. When I started doing this last year, there were no specific rationale templates, hence my use of the information template. WMGC-FM copyright tag.
[edit]Sorry about that, got ahead of myself before I hit send. I added the copyright tag as well as the fair-use tag. Thanks RobDe68 (talk) 02:07, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Help with article notability
[edit]I submitted an article Pingsta, but it says i did not meet the general notability. How do i find out which part of article did not meet the requirements? I read the page about notability but I still don't get it. Thanks.--Edwint1222 (talk) 21:14, 8 February 2008 (UTC)

Fair use rationale for Image:Zimmerman Mugshot.jpg
[edit]Please count me as yet another complainant to your inaccurate message that "there is not a suitable explanation or rationale" to a given photo. You left your latest message on my talk page regarding Image:Zimmerman Mugshot.jpg. The explanation (this is a government mug shot released to the public under Florida's Public Records Law, Ch. 119 of the Florida Statutes) is more than suitable for Image:Zimmerman Mugshot.jpg. You need to fix your bot. This is an unwelcome annoyance.--MiamiManny (talk) 04:09, 13 February 2008 (UTC)
