Re: Tobias

[edit]

Hi Sly111, thank you for writing to me on my talk page. I do not know too much about Andrew Tobias, so I'll bring this issue up on Talk:Horace Mann School. It would have been better if you had explained this further in your edit summary or even on the talk page, as "Tobias isn't a peer of Caro or Barr or Carter" doesn't explain too much and actually gave the sense to me you had a personal dislike towards him. Best, Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 04:25, 16 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sly, if you disagree with the inclusion of Josh Bernstein, perhaps you need to bring it up on the talk page, or question the notability of him in his own article. However, because he is notable and a graduate of HM, he belongs in that section. If you don't think he's worthy of being there, then his article doesn't deserve to exist, and you should send it to AfD. --Fbv65edel / ☑t / ☛c || 18:28, 20 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

you clearly think you know more than you know, and your speculative edits are a little ridiculous, no?

3/8/07 - what does that message even mean?

3/21 Thanks Sly111 for the nice comment. You also are very well informed on the society landscape, in this bulldog's humble opinion. BoolaBoola2

4/3. Hi Sly111, follow on to your knickrbock q. sorry to be awol. No, not WHS, but respect it as an historic and honorable peer here on campus. enjoy following your edits. best, BoolaBoola2

4/6 - thanks for your shout out just now, Sly. have been working on a wide range of articles today. keep editing yourself - great stuff at your end too!  :) BoolaBoola2

Did you ask Robin if he dined at the Knickrbock? I'll be at reunions this spring -- a good opp. to photograph facades so don't have to rely on links to the Yale facilities pages for pics to illustrate the wiki.BoolaBoola2

Hi Sly -- you're always a fine editor! I wonder if you'd be ok with reverting one of my thoughts, which was in the sentence: "...however it is not historically accurate that leadership of the CIA -- or any of the most senior positions in the U.S. intelligence Community -- ever hinged on being a Bonesman as the movie implies." -- As formulated originally, its a sly dig (pardon the pun) at the conspiricists (or even their own members) who persist in seeing S&B as the center of the universe. Also, would it make sense to incude Dean Winks' book as a reference somewehre (maybe it already is in references, I forgot). all in all though, a fine editing. I have had a good time visiting Harvard the past few days (on wiki) based on some road trips to Signet when I was last in Cambridge. they're screwed up up there, still have the all male system firmly in place. That's about as sustainable as the russian monarchy (or, I guess, Augusta National)...BoolaBoola2

No need to apologize to me, Sly! I didn't add Cornell to the S&B page. Cornell2010 21:45, 9 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The article is much improved since last time I had a look at it. Thank you for correcting the problems I mentioned and adding a lot to the article. Like any article it has room for improvement. For helpful hints, see Wikipedia:Guide to writing better articles. In particular, the article could use more citations and should convert to the <ref> system. See Wikipedia:Citing sources to find out how to do this. I probably won't be reviewing the article in the future because I've been on Wikipedia less lately and generally edit other types of articles. If you want other editors to give you advice, you may want to list the article on Wikipedia:Requests for feedback. Good luck. --dm (talk) 12:53, 16 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

On quick glance, to make this a featured article it needs more citations. The lead and the history sections currently have none. I like to use the <ref> system, but any of the standard formats in wp:cite should work. The article should probably have an illustrative picture. A picture of the Wolf's Head Hall is most obvious and probably easiest to get, but a historical picture of the society's early days would be great if it exists and is available under a free license. Have you submitted the article to requests for feedback? Have you incorporated the suggestions received? If so, the next step would be submitting the article to Wikipedia:Peer review. They will be brutally honest and harsh so try to improve any obvious faults on your own before submission. See Wikipedia:Article development for still more advice. Keep in mind that few articles reach featured status so it will take a lot of work. Good luck. --dm (talk) 17:53, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

NY Library IP blocks

[edit]

There is an ongoing active vandal operating from the New York Public Library system open terminals. We are forced by those circumstances to keep blocking those IP addresses on a regular basis.

This should not affect your existing login account. Those blocks are supposed to be anonymous-only, so you only need to log in to edit. Georgewilliamherbert 18:13, 8 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

References

[edit]

I assume you mean on the Wolf's Head (secret society) page. I fixed your problem. Whenever you use the <ref> system, you have to put <references> or, preferably, {{reflist}} somewhere in the page. --D. Monack | talk 18:54, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Details on the <ref> system can be found at Wikipedia:Footnotes. --D. Monack | talk 18:57, 15 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Saw you had a problem with references in this article. There was a typo in the tag. You put <ref/>, when it really needs to be </ref> with the slash in that specific order. If it's misformatted, then the article may "disappear". Cheers. --Aude (talk) 17:16, 17 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of Charles W. Harkness

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Charles W. Harkness requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done because the article appears to be about a person, group of people, band, club, company, or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not indicate the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable. If this is the first page that you have created, then you should read the guide to writing your first article.

If you think that you can assert the notability of the subject, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would confirm the subject's notability under Wikipedia guidelines.

For guidelines on specific types of articles, you may want to check out our criteria for biographies, for web sites, for bands, or for companies. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. Kannie | talk 20:55, 24 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Benno Schmidt

[edit]

I guess your comment relates to my edit of Wolf's Head (secret society). The problem is that there are two notable Benno Schmidts (father and son: Benno C. Schmidt, Sr. and Benno C. Schmidt, Jr.), fairly close in age as notable fathers and sons go. Failure to use the Jr. and Sr. has made hash of their separate identities. I am trying to sort out the links before creating a disambiguation page. I have no objection to your restoration of piping to remove the "Jr.", as long as we distinguish the two. --Orlady (talk) 18:53, 1 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'm glad you are interested in taking on Benno C. Schmidt, Sr. as a research project, but I'm afraid I can't offer much help. I backed into that disambiguation issue when trying to properly caption and link the image that appears in the Benno C. Schmidt, Sr. article (an image that I found while trying to illustrate Robert A. Good).
I think I have successfully identified the correct Benno Schmidt for all but one of the articles that linked to Benno Schmidt. The exception is The Brook (an article has a lot of unsourced information, in spite of my recent efforts there) -- I can imagine that either or both of them might have been members of that club. --Orlady (talk) 21:28, 2 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Did you find evidence the Benno Schmidt Jr. is the one who is or was a member of the Brook Club? If anything, I would have guessed that the father was more likely to be the member. (Have you found any more references to cite in that article?) --Orlady (talk) 18:46, 3 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Again, did you have a source for your decision to point that link to Jr.? --Orlady (talk) 15:02, 4 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You wrote "When the society celebrated the conclusion of the campaign he chaired, The Brook was host." Which society was that (Wolf's Head?) and where is the source? --Orlady (talk) 19:41, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for your reply. I'm satisfied that we have the right Benno (although I still think it possible that his father was also a member, and the info is still subject to deletion for being unsourced). Currently there are source citations for only 4 or 5 of the numerous members mentioned in The Brook; presumably someone had a source for the article when it was first created... --Orlady (talk) 20:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I guess I should have told you when I ran across that source that documents the coinage of the term "venture capital." There's a lot more material where that came from regarding Benno Sr. and the origins of venture capital. (There's even some good stuff regarding the thinking behind the coinage.) --Orlady (talk) 18:05, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • You made some interesting observations on sourcing at Wikipedia. I don't guess there's much controversy regarding lists of members of Yale secret societies (and it's a subject that is not publicly documented and that arouses much curiosity), so you may have experienced less pressure to stringently follow WP:V than I've encountered in my Wikipedia experience. Suffice it to say that the requirement for citations to support all content is Wikipedia policy. A lot of seemingly innocuous (and undoubtedly valid) content gets removed for lack of citations, or at a minimum gets plastered with "Unreferenced" templates or "citation needed" tags. --Orlady (talk) 18:05, 7 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Taser Incident

[edit]

How exactly was the question irrelevant to the proceedings? It was a college forum where the students were allowed to ask Kerry questions. You really think it's ok to rig the presidency? LMFAO! You really think the police only enforce laws when they have been broken? Have you been living under a rock? One of my best friends got pulled over a couple weeks ago and he took a drink while the cops were coming up to the car and the cops rushed him, said he had drugs, and beat him. Badly. And I'm sorry but I think if any society is rigging the presidency the fact that they're rigging the presidency is relevant.Psykoticslumber (talk) 07:22, 26 February 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Yale prize

[edit]

Because nobody is perfect and sometimes we make mistakes. Anyway, I am sorry for bothering you --Hellahulla (talk) 12:23, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just re-read. You are telling me that the prize was first awarded 8 years before the son of J A Porter graduated? Although in the Yale prizes website it says B.A. 1842 (The year the Father graduated?)
Am I missing something here? I reckon you're an American (No derogatory comment intended, its just because of your interest), perhaps you can call the university and find out for sure, I live in Finland, costs are too prohibitive for me to do that.
Here is my rundown - From the wikipedia article: "Porter graduated from Yale College in 1842"
From the Yale site: "JOHN ADDISON PORTER (1872). Kingsley Trust Association in honor of Professor John A. Porter, B.A. 1842. "
Son's details: "They had a son, also John Addison, born in New Haven, Connecticut on April 17th, 1856, who also graduated from Yale (in 1878)"
Seriously, what did I miss here?
I will revert to my wording, won't get into a reversion war here though, just because I am sure I am right, I can read and the numbers don't work if its the son's award.
I'll also post this exchange on the discussion page, for others to mull it over.
Thanks. --Hellahulla (talk) 13:00, 1 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I have granted your account an exemption from IP blocking. This will allow you to edit through full blocks affecting your IP address when you are logged in.

Go for it.

My only contributions to the page were to point out inadequacies. No one's addressed them. If a speedy isn't in order, an AfD certainly is. I'm not around much any more. I've been taking an informal break from wiki-drama that's turning out to be longer than I thought it might be. I'm less stressed and the project seems none the worse for my absence.

Good luck, and thank's for the courtesy of trying to flag down my attention before acting.

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Anthony Reno requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Tomtomn00 (talkcontributions) 19:42, 17 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Why are you removing so many notable alumni? The entries don't need references to show notability if they are notable enough to have wiki articles. The articles should contain sourced proof of their attendance, and I have not checked to see if they do, but your edit summary "footnotes?" seems to indicate that you are removing the alumni entries because they don't have refs on the school page. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. Berzelius

[edit]

Despite your seemingly unfriendly comments on your revision page, I feel compelled to ask why the membership list of Berzelius was removed. As you must know membership is not a secret. The activities in the tombs are. The membership can be documented from the Yale Class Year Books. To list a DEAD member seems no intrusion of privacy but rather an honor.
