readded Valereee
removed Anthony Appleyard (deceased) • CapitalistroadsterSamsara

Guideline and policy news

  • An RfC has been closed with consensus to add javascript that will show edit notices for editors editing via a mobile device. This only works for users using a mobile browser, so iOS app editors will still not be able to see edit notices.
  • An RfC has been closed with the consensus that train stations are not inherently notable.

Technical news

  • The Wikimania 2022 Hackathon will take place virtually from 11 August to 14 August.
  • Administrators will now see links on user pages for "Change block" and "Unblock user" instead of just "Block user" if the user is already blocked. (T308570)

Arbitration

  • The arbitration case request Geschichte has been automatically closed after a 3 month suspension of the case.

Miscellaneous

  • You can vote for candidates in the 2022 Board of Trustees elections from 16 August to 30 August. Two community elected seats are up for election.

Sockpuppet investigations

Hi there! Could you please consider adding User:Mokerenui to Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Jinnifer? See User talk:GoingBatty#Horror film - asking me again to edit the Horror film article. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:13, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

The "Horror film" section of my talk page was deleted by Apokryltaros in this edit. I'd appreciate if one of you could update the sockpuppet investigation. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:26, 6 August 2022 (UTC)
Looks like somebody already blocked them, thanks for the note. -- RoySmith (talk) 15:44, 6 August 2022 (UTC)

Editor of the Week

Editor of the Week
Your ongoing efforts to improve the encyclopedia have not gone unnoticed: You have been selected as Editor of the Week in recognition of your great contributions! (courtesy of the Wikipedia Editor Retention Project)

User:Girth Summit submitted the following nomination for Editor of the Week:

I nominate RoySmith for his tireless work at SPI. With seventeen years and over 70,000 contributions, he shows no signs of slowing down. Not only does he do yeoman's work in defending the barricades against the socky hoards, but he has also put his coding skills to great use in developing tools that allow SPI clerks and CUs to extract information from old cases quickly and effectively. SPI is a corner of Wikipedia that is very much behind-the-scenes; working there is repetitive, often pretty grimy, but it needs to be done to prevent the LTAs and spammers from damaging to work of our volunteers. RoySmith has been doing a disproportionate amount of that work for a long time - it would be great to see that recognised.

You can copy the following text to your user page to display a user box proclaiming your selection as Editor of the Week:

Pinged

Hi RoySmith! IIRC, the User:EvergreenFir/sandbox3 was someone wanting the text they worked on from a deleted page. I honestly don't remember exactly though. I'll undo the edit and REVDEL it EvergreenFir (talk) 18:21, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Thanks. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:21, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
I just checked, and yes, it was a request for the text (User_talk:EvergreenFir/Archive_21#Your_administrator_actions_on_Patrick_Lancaster) EvergreenFir (talk) 18:22, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
That's cool, but for future references, I think all that's needed to satisfy the copyvio problem is a note like I did here in the edit comment. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:26, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Will do, thank you! EvergreenFir (talk) 18:27, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

@Roy Smith: How you are telling that User:Deepika o is a sock? Do you have any proof for that? I think so you have blocked the wrong person. Theoder2055 (talk) 15:35, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

(talk page stalker) Well, @Theoder2055 you can see on their userpage that it was a checkuser block, so maybe read up on that before scolding an admin about what appears to be a well placed block. PRAXIDICAE🌈 15:42, 20 August 2022 (UTC)

DRV?

Hi Roy, You're my go-to guy when DRV gets backed up. And backed up it is. If you have time your help would be welcome. Hobit (talk) 04:06, 19 August 2022 (UTC)

Sure, always happy to do a drive-by. Now, about that SPI queue that needs more people working it... -- RoySmith (talk) 13:41, 19 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Life is busy right now, but I might have some cycles to spare. Is there a way I could help with SPI? I know little about it. Hobit (talk) 03:30, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
I would start by reading WP:SPI/PROC#Patrolling. A good way to start is to look a case and see if you can find anything in the editing history of the suspected accounts which convinces you that they are (or are not) the same person. The classic example would be where one account has made edits which duplicate edits made by another account. Add diff links to the case showing those edits is very helpful. I'd also take a look at WP:ILLEGIT. I hope you do get involved. It's a complicated area and one that can be intimidating to new recruits, but it's also one that needs a lot more people working on it. I've always been impressed with your arguments at DRV; somebody with your analytic outlook I think would be an asset at SPI. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:10, 21 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks for the kind words! It sounds interesting (and is certainly important). Just if I have the motivation to jump into something new (and screw up for a while). Right now going from vacation mode to crazy mode for a week or so. But I expect Sept-Nov to be slow IRL... Hobit (talk) 17:02, 22 August 2022 (UTC)

Hunan201p and Ghizz Archus

I just closed a dispute at DRN between these two editors, who have also been arguing with each other at useless length. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:29, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

I might add that it's unreasonable to expect a general-purpose noticeboard like DRN to be able to mediate a content dispute on a highly technical topic like this. -- RoySmith (talk) 01:39, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
That's true, but an expert subject-matter mediator wouldn't be able to help with them either because the mediator would, correctly, be trying to focus on the facts, and they are both too busy shouting at each other. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:23, 26 August 2022 (UTC)
That too. -- RoySmith (talk) 13:54, 26 August 2022 (UTC)

I do not have UTRS access

? You're an admin. That's all that's needed (well, I have no recollection of asking for extra permissions to access UTRS). https://utrs-beta.wmflabs.org/review - Cabayi (talk) 13:30, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

Interesting. I once had access, and was asked to give it up because I was not actively working UTRS cases. Maybe that was just for some particular private UPE queue? -- RoySmith (talk) 13:37, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
I know the system changed around the time I acquired the bit. Perhaps that was the old UTRS? Cabayi (talk) 13:53, 31 August 2022 (UTC)
Could be. It's really annoying how the universe keeps changing every time I think I've got it figured out. Thanks for the correction. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:14, 31 August 2022 (UTC)

In addition to the generally aggressive tone, you made assertions that the person in question was incompetent, that they were a vandal, and a troll. I fully agree that the method of testing they employed was inappropriate, but that doesn't justify the language you used. Please address the testing process, not the individual person. And thank you for seeking clarification. -- RoySmith (talk) 16:07, 2 September 2022 (UTC)

DYK for West Farms Soldiers Cemetery

On 4 September 2022, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article West Farms Soldiers Cemetery, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the soldier guarding the West Farms Soldiers Cemetery went missing for six years? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/West Farms Soldiers Cemetery. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, West Farms Soldiers Cemetery), and if they received a combined total of at least 416.7 views per hour (i.e., 5,000 views in 12 hours or 10,000 in 24), the hook may be added to the statistics page. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Who?

Could you take a look at Tubbytexan and Fact Repealer? JBW blocked Tubby as a sock but without identifying the master. It was clear to me that Tubby and FR were the same person, but I was unable to identify an earlier account/master. Then, as you can see, a user whom I don't know tagged FR's userpage as a sock of Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Eiskrahablo/Archive. I am not familiar with that sock farm; however, at a glance at a few recent socks it didn't look obvious to me. Would you mind sorting it out? Thanks.--Bbb23 (talk) 00:28, 29 August 2022 (UTC)

Yup, plus a few more. See Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Eiskrahablo#29 August 2022 -- RoySmith (talk) 01:21, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Thanks! Do we need to request global locks?--Bbb23 (talk) 01:27, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
I didn't really explore that, but feel free to do so :-) -- RoySmith (talk) 01:32, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
 Done.--Bbb23 (talk) 02:09, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
If it's of any interest to you, Bbb23 and Roy, the reason I blocked without identifying the master is that I was 100% sure it was a sockpuppet, but only 85% sure whose sockpuppet. It astonishes me how many experienced serial sockpuppeteers are completely blind to how obvious they make it that their latest account is a sockpuppet. If I wanted to get away with sockpuppetry I'm sure I would have no difficulty in making it 1000 less obvious than this one did. 🥴 JBW (talk) 10:49, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
No criticism intended, JBW, I only pinged you to give you a chance to comment if you wished. Some checkusers CU-block accounts without identifying the master. BTW, was your 85% guess right? :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 12:43, 29 August 2022 (UTC)
Sorry, Bbb23, when I saw your message here I was busy, and meant to come back to answer it, but it then got lost from my brain. Things I put off until later very often do get lost; that's one of the symptoms of attention deficit disorder, which plagues my life. Unfortunately I don't now remember who I thought the sockmaster was, so I can't answer your question on that. As for there being no criticism intended, I never thought there was. As I said, my message was just in case you and/or Roy might be interested, not because I thought I was defending mself against any criticism. JBW (talk) 13:55, 8 September 2022 (UTC)
@JBW: I don't have anything as interesting as ADD; I just forget things. :-) --Bbb23 (talk) 14:50, 8 September 2022 (UTC)

I see at Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Əzərbəyəniləri/Archive#31 August 2022 you ran a check and found Fact writer010 (talk+ · tag · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log · CA · CheckUser(log· investigate · cuwiki) but not 009. I hadn't seen them before, I'll take a look now. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:14, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
Other than the obvious username similarity, I'm not seeing a connection. If you think they're a sock, please file a SPI. -- RoySmith (talk) 14:22, 10 September 2022 (UTC)
It makes sense, Əzərbəyəniləri (talk · contribs) saw Fact writer009 (talk · contribs) make this edit which he disagreed with, so he copied his username, made a new account, and reverted it. Dbainsford was blocked for edit warring today at 19:15. Jrdk1 was created today at 20:12 and has made 3 edits: one to Talk:William, Prince of Wales, one to Head of the British Armed Forces, and one to Dbainsford's Talk page complaining about the block. Dbainsford also edited the William Talk page, as well as the Head article; both edits were similar. Seems very suspicious to me.--Bbb23 (talk) 23:58, 11 September 2022 (UTC)

Sockfarm

Sorry, If I bothered you, but it's really important at the minute. A quite active sockfarm is persistently making disruptive edits with factual errors on a number of articles related to the Chandelas. User:Suryansh Rathore who quite clearly belongs to this SPI is now disrupting several articles with few more accounts, which is unavoidable now; here are few diffs: diff, (created another sock Arty.mishra) diff, diff, diff; same is going on with the Paramardi article; I briefly intervened on both those articles and reverted them; diff & diff (requested extended protection but CambridgeBayWeather only semi-protected it; diff)

  • Also, creating articles from third-rate (fake) sources about battles, sieges that never took place like Vidyadhara defeating Mahmud; diff or this diff (Speedy deletion needed soon ?)
  • Similar incoherent edit summaries like the previous socks; diff, diff.
  • While these evidences alone are substantial enough to prove that this are same users; take a look here where they uploaded dubious image similar to the confirmed CU blocked account of Ashutosh pandey 999; diff with Arty.mishra diff along with same hyerboles like almighty, chakravarti etc.
  • The account was reported on 25 August 2022, diff but it's been nearly a month now without any good action. Thus, I posted it here.
  • Since you blocked three previous socks; diff, diff and diff, It might be of your interset since original SPI is not getting any response
  • The behavioural evidences are strong enough, still If you want, ran a check and block these accounts which are now causing large-scale disruption; Cheers. ∆ P&t ♀√ (talk) 09:01, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

PS:- I am more occupied with the Central Asian articles these days, but this is serious disruption now which caught my attention; see their another sock Special:Contributions/Jhaprashant948 roaming around. ∆ P&t ♀√ (talk) 09:04, 13 September 2022 (UTC)

Hi, and thanks for your note, but could I ask you to file an SPI? That'll make things easier to process. -- RoySmith (talk) 18:03, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
I asked less politely than you.-- Jezebel's Ponyobons mots 18:06, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
For kind information please kindly don't call me a sock while comparing me with this sick person. I'm not insane like this person who is Consistently being disruptive right now. I have never done any disruptive, removing content, or vandalizing. I'm very honest and genuine here. I will never do anything against Wikipedia rules. Request for auto-protection

Hello, I hate to trouble you like this, and please accept my apologies in advance. Last April, you auto-protected a number of articles because of the persistent block evasion by CanadianHistorian(MMA & History) who started editing as an IP almost from the moment he was blocked. The auto-protection expired at the end of May, and CanadianHistorian started editing again as an IP in June. He is making a mockery of the block, and he most recently edited today. I won't trouble you with the details, but the evidence is all here: Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/CanadianHistorian(MMA & History). Would it be possible to have the auto-protection restored, but only for a longer period of time, perhaps for a year or so? Thank you for your time and patience. Best wishes! --A.S. Brown (talk) 08:29, 15 September 2022 (UTC)

Yeah, that case has been a mess, thanks for you note about it. @MarioGom: this would be a good one for you to look at. -- RoySmith (talk) 11:02, 15 September 2022 (UTC)
Thank you so much for all your help and time. I know this is a tiresome, Sisyphean task in the never-ending battle against sock-puppetry, so I do appreciate greatly appreciate your help. Best wishes! --A.S. Brown (talk) 04:57, 16 September 2022 (UTC)
