Greetings & Assignment Reminder
[edit]I look forward to seeing your 3-5 articles ideas, as well as a link to your critical evaluation of an existing Wikipedia article related to the class with suggestions for improving it on the article's discussion page. You can post those under this comment (make sure to add a semicolon to indent your comment to the right). Once you have posted these, please be sure to let me know on my talk page in the section I set up for these two assignments.--Theredproject (talk) 21:03, 21 September 2011 (UTC)

Zuzana Licko (possible sources)
[edit]Zuzana Licko is an AIGA medalitst.
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_AIGA_medalists
Her work as well as her husband's Rudy Vandelans is displayed on the Emigre website. The website displays the various fonts that they have developed.
- Good starts. Use the AIGA essay to track down more specific books or articles about her. Be careful of using any one source too much, especially when it is a self produced source (e.g. the Emigre site). Lastly, put these notes on the talk page for the article, not your own. You will be in dialogue with the other notes there. --Theredproject (talk) 00:09, 20 October 2011 (UTC)
updated Zuzana Licko resources
[edit]1) Zuzana studied architecture before deciding to focus on visual communication. When she met Rudy, she was intrigued by his knowledge of typography and type design. [1]
2) fontfeed interview performed in 1998: Zuzana Licko started to experiment with making type because of the limitations that she found in what was originally available on Mac computers when they were first released. She also started to work on new fonts as a way to create content for Émigré magazine. [2] 3) Zuzana and her husband, Rudy, won the Chrysler Design Award in 1994. [3] 4) Because of her admiration for Bodoni, she designed and came up with several variations of Bodoni, in the form of digital font for computer type and some forms were also used for text. Before working with computers Zuzana’s favorite typeface was Bodoni. “‘I was attracted to its clean lines and geometric shapes and the variety of headline style choices. For practical reasons, however, I often decided against using Bodoni for long texts, as the extreme contrast made it difficult to read at small sizes.’” (223). Bodoni was an influence on Zuzana Licko’s work on Filosofia, one of her typefaces. Like other revivals of typefaces, Zuzana’s takes on Bodoni focused on geometry and symmetry. She also incorporated things like slightly rounded serif endings. Zuzana Licko’s Filosofia was also designed to be modified to either be used on text or on a computer. There is a “Regular” version of the Filosofia family which is designed to be used on text. The Filosofia Grand is designed for display applications and is described as more refined and delicate. “‘My research for Filosofia included studying various versions of Bodoni, from Bodoni’s original print work to recent revivals such as ITC Bodoni.’” Although it was an influence on her work Zuzana explains, “ ‘I did not however use any particular specimen as the model. Rather, I drew my Bodoni from memory, akin the process of transcribing, while following the guideline of rough measurement to retain the basic proportions’” (223). - I just found some info on Zuzana on Emigre's website, it may help with your article. http://emigre.com/Editorial.php?sect=3&id=8 - (Licko was born in Bratislava, Czechoslovakia, and moved to the United States at the age of seven. Her father, a biomathematician, provided her with access to computers and the opportunity to design her first typeface, a Greek alphabet, for his personal use. She entered the University of California at Berkeley in 1981 as an undergraduate. She had planned to study architecture, but changed her major to visual studies and pursued a graphic communications degree. Being left-handed, she hated her calligraphy class, where she was forced to write with her right hand.) In fact, there's tons of interviews that you can find browsing on Emigre's site. Check it out! --Sabinajm (talk) 20:02, 29 November 2011 (UTC)
