Currencies replaced by the E/euro

[edit]

Your bot changed Category:Currencies replaced by the Euro to Category:Category:Currencies replaced by the euro. Thanks for making the change. Unfortunately, there's an extra "Category:". Ingrid 18:58, 7 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I've requested a rename of Category:Knights of the Order of the Bath which will essentially undo the merge you initiated via WP:CfD on August 2. In case you read this before the Cfd closes (unlikely if you are on a wikibreak until early Sept) my motivation for doing so can be found at Talk:Order of the Bath. August Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: To-Do List
The Esperanza To-Do List is a place where you may list any request, big or small, for assistance. If you need help with archiving your usertalk, for example, all you need to do is list it here and somebody will help you out. Likewise, if you need help with some area of editing on Wikipedia, list it here! Again, any matter, trivial or not, can be placed on this page. However, all matters listed on this page must not be of an argumentative nature. You do not need to be a member of Esperanza (or this program) to place or fulfill requests on this page. If you don't have any requests, consider coming by and fulfilling a few! This program has not been very active, but has lots of potential!
What's New?
In order to help proposed programs become specific enough to make into full-fledged programs, the In development section of the proposals page has been created. Proposals that are promising, but need to be organized in more detail are listed here. Please take a look at what is there, and help the proposals turn into programs.
To improve both the layout and text of the front page, in an attempt to clarify the image of Esperanza, the front page is going to have some redesigning take place. Please take your creative minds to Wikipedia:Esperanza/Front page redesign to brainstorm good ideas.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. In order to make sure all users who join Esperanza are welcomed, a list of volunteers who are willing to welcome new Esperanzians is at Wikipedia:Esperanza/Members#Esperanza_welcomers. Please add yourself if you are interested; we want to make sure all new Esperanza members are welcomed!
  2. The In development section of the proposals page has been created.
  3. Proposals page: Some proposals have been moved to the aforementioned "In development" section, some have been left as a proposal, and others have been archived. For those proposals that were a good idea but didn't necessarily constitute a program, General Esperanzial Actions has been created.
  4. Two small pieces of charter reform will be decided on in a straw poll at Wikipedia talk:Esperanza/Governance. One involves filling the position of any councillors who may leave, the other involves reforming the charter.
  5. Until cooperation with the Kindness Campaign is better defined, it remains as a proposed program.
  6. There is a page for discussing the front page redesign.

Your bot

[edit]

I note your bot patrols the categories in Category:Wikipedia category redirects. Is there any way you can get it to patrol Category:Protected deleted categories and remove and articles from the categories listed in there? They are all categories that have been deleted and are subject to regular recreation. Steve block Talk 23:51, 3 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I should be able to get my bot to clear out articles' references to categories in Category:Protected deleted categories without too much trouble. I'll work on it when I get a moment (which may not be this week).

Sorry, been immersed in other stuff. Thanks for looking into this, how are you getting on? Steve block Talk 20:06, 11 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Isn't Dennis Norden that marvellous voice on "My Word?" I haven't heard that show in years, but it was one of my favourites when I was in graduate school. That's a funny story ... recent change to category on: HMCS Shearwater (ship)

[edit]

The category of Canadian Armed Forces is still a valid category for HMCS Shearwater (ship). She was commissioned and saw service in The Royal Canadian Navy, the Canadian Armed Forces (Tri-Service) and later on in the Canadian Forces (Naval Element). There are various eras of the Canadian Military and changing the category to just Military of Canada creates a too large genre of 250 years, whereas each specific phase of Canadian Military history is unique. Please let me know if I should have used the duscussion page specific to HMCS Shearwater (ship), or this forum...Still trying to get a handle on the niceties involved. Any help in proper method to revert back, or to also include the categories would be appreciated. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Smittyjr (talkcontribs) 15 September 2006.

Help disambiguating

[edit]

Hello, I've seen you've been editing UK related articles, and there is a current need to help disambiguate the term British. At Wikipedia:Disambiguation pages with links, British is the disambiguation pages with the most links (by far), and ideally there should be no links to disambiguation pages. So if possible, please take a look at the links, and try to disambiguate the links to a more correct location. It's actually pretty easy, and most get disambiguated to United Kingdom. If we could get 10 or so people doing 50 links a day, we'll be done in no time. Thanks in advance , -- Jeff3000 03:38, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. I don't even know if it had something to do with your bot, but when I entered at Baltasar Carlos, Prince of Asturias, it told me there was no such page, but I could access it in the history, and the last edit was made by RobotG. my thanks for your help and advice

[edit]

RobertG my many thanks for your quick response and direction....I've been trying to stick inside the guide (so to speak), and I understand better that more specific, as opposed to many different categories....Took just a quick look on the category page and found what I need..But again, my thanks. September Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Barnstar Brigade
Here in Wikipedia there are hundreds of wikipedians whose work and efforts go unappreciated. One occasionally comes across editors who have thousands of good edits, but because they may not get around as much as others, their contributions and hard work often go unnoticed. As Esperanzians we can help to make people feel appreciated, be it by some kind words or the awarding of a Barnstar. This is where the Barnstar Brigade comes in. The object of this program is to seek out the people which deserve a Barnstar, and help them feel appreciated. With your help, we can recognize more dedicated editors!
What's New?
September elections are upon us! Anyone wishing to be a part of the Advisory Council may list themselves as a candidate from 18 September until 24 September, with the voting taking place from 25 September to 30 September. Those who wish to help with the election staff should also list themselves!
Appreciation Week, a program currently in development, now has its own subpage! Share your good ideas on how to make it awesome there!
The Esperanza front page has been redesigned! Many thanks to all who worked hard on it.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  1. The proposals page has been updated, with some proposals being archived.

We have listed Styris' 53 with 13 fours as an example of an innings with a high percentage of boundaries. Last Saturday, Mark Pettini scored 114* against Leics' declaration bowling, which was made entirely of fours and sixes. Someone posted in rec.sport.cricket today that the next best in the 100% category is Thilina Kandamby's innings of 52 against Zim A. Will one of this be worth including in the article instead of Styris ?

In the Essex - Leics match, Darrell Robinson might have made it to the "most runs in an over" list but I couldn't find the details in any match report. Tintin (talk) 06:35, 25 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Cheers; I suppose we are the early birds with such articles: I consider this type of editing to be putting down bricks for others to build on in the future. I'll pop back from time to time to try and make the writing and structure a bit more elegant.

I've just added a book to the References section and unfortunately it's thrown out the neat fit around the picture; I've been tinkering about but can't work out how to sort it yet, so maybe you could help with that? Ideally, I'd like to see the References below the Notes, so that in future people may add real notes, not just bookref footnotes, with a bibliography below, the two in the same order as at the back of books.qp10qp 15:58, 29 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Brahms and Schumann

[edit]

Hi there! In fact, when Brahms met Schumann he had only completed the second and fourth movements of the Op.5 Piano Sonata - movements 1, 3 and 5 were written during October '53 in Düsseldorf. On the other hand the Op.1 Sonata - which was completed AFTER the op.2 Sonata - is called 'Fourth Sonata' on the manuscript. Presuming that op.2 is 'Third Sonata', that means that Brahms had written four sonatas and was part-way through a fifth when Schumann first met him.Cenedi 18:20, 5 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Oita -> Ōita

[edit]

Hi there. I just noticed that when your bot RobotG renamed all the Oita categories to Ōita categories that it missed one: Category:People from Oita Prefecture seems to still be unchanged. Bobo12345 09:14, 9 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the copyedits to the rewritten Hick article, most of which I think are handy improvements on what I originally wrote; my comment about Hick's hundred hundreds was certainly ripe for removal, not only because of Ramprakash but because it's bordering on being a personal opinion. There are one or two exceptions - I think "before the series was out" is slightly better than "before the last match of the series", for example - but I'm certainly not going to go reverting them!

The only thing I have changed is the passage mentioning Atherton's remark about the Sydney declaration. Given that he was commenting after his retirement, and was commenting on how he would have approached this specific happening again rather than what he might do in the future, I think "would not have taken such a decision again" is the correct form, rather than "would not take..." I've added "in his autobiography" to the text to make it clearer that he was commenting some years afterwards, not straight after the game.

Finally, I'm flattered by your remark on the edit summary! User:Dar2020 must take a portion of the credit too, since he was the one to inspire this rewrite in the first place, and he contributed a lot of useful ideas and references. Loganberry (Talk) 15:12, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I would be honoured to see the Hick article considered for featured status at some point, and I'll confess that the thought of submitting it in the future had crossed my mind. As you picked out, the main stumbling block at the moment is the lack of pictures: there are a couple of Hick on Flickr, but unfortunately under an unusable licence (cc-nc-nd-2.0). Any pictures you could obtain would certainly be extremely welcome, therefore. Loganberry (Talk) 13:15, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

America is not a country

[edit]

RobertG, I don’t remember seeing you edit a lot of the saints articles, so I don't know why you felt it necessary to change my edits. Back in July, which got shot down, not once but twice in a week. There was hardly any discussion, nor was there really a chance to build a consensus. I was basically shouted down twice, by a group of people not involved in this area.

America is not a country, it is a continent. If you look at Saints by country, you will see that all the sub-cats (with a couple of broad exceptions are by country or nationality). America is not a country and, the category pattern as currently set up under Saints by country matches the commons, Spanish and Italian versions.

I find it amusing that we are even having this discussion, because if you look at Category:American saints, you'll see that it is a sub-cat of both Category:American people and Category:Religion in the United Statesthere is no consistency. I'm trying to make it consistent, and remove a U.S. bias.

I'm going to go ahead and change the categories back to what they were. If you really feel strongly about it, please bring it up at the CFR and let’s deal with it there. --evrik 18:52, 10 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

WP:CFDS says that renaming between "American" and "United States" does not qualify for speedy renaming; and even CFDS has been bypassed here. There are enough "American" categories out there to make me think "America" must be an accepted name for the USA. I do not have a full understanding of this issue (not being American), and so I prefer to go by Wikipedia consensus. When I found the new redirect had been created, I naturally checked previous CFDs, and found them not in favour of your change. This is the sole reason why I changed it back. If there is a CFD consensus for this move, then let me know and of course I will gladly get the bot to help move the articles.
It is my view that if a CFD rename nomination is "shot down in flames" (see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006_July_3#Category:American_saints and Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006_July_11#Category:American_saints_to_Category:United_States_saints) it is not correct to go ahead anyway some time later. I'm sorry if this seems officious to you. Believe me, if you can get consensus for the consistency you seek I will gladly help you implement it, but there seems to be no such consensus at the moment. --RobertGtalk 09:11, 11 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Removing full name from lead

[edit]

Having the full name in the lead is standard encylopedia practice, at least if you consider Britannica the standard.

Steve Reich
born October 3, 1936, New York, N.Y., U.S.
, byname of Stephen Michael Reich American composer who was ...
Antonín Dvorák
born September 8, 1841, Nelahozeves, Bohemia, Austrian Empire [now in Czech Republic]
died May 1, 1904, Prague
in full Antonín Leopold Dvorák first Bohemian composer to ...

It would be a good idea to take this up with Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography before making any more changes, as it has far-reaching style implications.

– flamurai (t) 07:06, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, scratch all that. There's already a guideline in place at MOS:BIO:

While the article title should generally be the name by which the subject is most commonly known, the subject's full name should be given in the lead paragraph, if known.

Deleting Duck Butter Records

[edit]

Robert,

I am a little disapointed that you chose to delete the "Duck Butter Records" article. This article was researched for hours. I am not versed in the ways of Wiki and was hoping someone else out there could help me complete it.

Since I am at your mercy. What can I do to make this a legitimate article and not have you nazi's delete my hardwork?

Thanks in advance, Billy —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Bullbone (talkcontribs) 26 October 2006.

Well, not having read the article yet, I personally would say a good first step is to not call people from whom you are requesting help "nazi's". That doesn't tend to encourage friendly cooperation. Mak (talk) 18:17, 26 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Makemi you are right. However I wanted to let Robert know in a very direct way I am upset. Had I know it would be considered spam or self promotion and deleted I would have done whatever was needed to make it legitimate. I apologize for trying to contribute.Billy (talk)

Billy, I have replied to you on your talk page. --RobertGtalk 08:59, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Robert I apologize for the Nazi comment. Thank you for your response. Just to clear up any misconception, I do not know Tim Biskup or Mike Biskup personally or professionally. Tim is a world wide known Lowbrow/Pop Surrealist artist. The Duck Butter article was meant to establish his early career. Some of his first commercial and fine art was created for the covers and inserts to these record releases. Makemi was very generous to put the page onto my user page to let me polish it for resubmission. Honestly, as I have stated before, I was just trying to create a comprehensive record of the history of his early work and nothing more.Bullbone 17:25, 27 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I only just noticed this rename request after you did it, but as per the fresh water article (and its talk page), "fresh water" is a noun, "freshwater" is an adjective. In this context therefore, it should surely not have been split into two words when being renamed? Sorry I couldn't have noticed this sooner... --DeLarge 11:31, 30 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Things have gone a bit pear-shaped all of a sudden, and I thought I'd better post here directly rather than just on the pages where process is followed.
An inexperienced user noticed our conversation on my talk page, but his well-meaning attempts at boldness have gone a little awry. Instead of getting the page and category renamed, he's created new ones and cut/pasted data to suit; See Category:Freshwater islands of Scotland/Category:Fresh water islands of Scotland and List of freshwater islands in Scotland/List of fresh water islands in Scotland. In the case of the latter, I think an administrative merge is required now that another user has made edits to the new page, but I'm not sure what should be done about the categories. And should I just follow process for both to get it all sorted? --DeLarge 22:23, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hello RobertG: I see that you just received one from the same person who gave me one earlier today. Since I have not gotten one before I am curious about how I should respond, if at all. I did notice that s/he has handed out a bunch of them and that among the many thanks on the userpage was a note from someone to the effect that it's probably good not to toss them around quite so blithely. So, should I add a thank-you note or what? Merci! --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 14:32, 1 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for pointing it out (and sorting it out). It's a hang-over from before cfd categories were subst:ed. The problem was it ran through the parent category (and moved this category's CFD categories out of the subst:ed template in the process) before it ran through this one. I'll get onto it. --RobertGtalk 21:25, 4 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

November Esperanza Newsletter

[edit]
Program Feature: Admin Coaching (needs coaches!)
Admin Coaching needs coaches!!! If you are an administrator, or even a generally experienced user, do consider signing up to be a coach.

Admin Coaching, now being coordinated by HighwayCello, is a program for people who want help learning some of the more subtle aspects of Wikipedia policy and culture. People are matched with experienced users who are willing to offer coaching. The program is designed for people who have figured out the basics of editing articles; they're not newcomers any more, but they might want some help in learning new roles. In this way, Esperanza would help keep hope alive for Wikipedia because we would always be grooming the next generation of admins.

What's New?
The Tutorial Drive is a new Esperanza program! In an effort to make complicated processes on Wikipedia easier for everyone, Esperanza working to create and compile a list of tutorials about processes here on Wikipedia. Consider writing one!
A discussion on how Esperanza relates to the encyclopedia has been started; please add your thoughts.
Many thanks to MiszaBot, courtesy of Misza13, for delivering the newsletter.
  • The list of proposed programs has been updated, with some proposals being archived.
  • There is now a new program: the Tutorial Drive! Consider writing a tutorial on something you are good at doing on Wikipedia.
  • The suggestion of adding a cohesive look to all the Esperanza pages is being considered; join the discussion if you are interested!
  • In order to make a useful interlanguage welcome template, those involved in translation projects will be asked what English Wikipedia policies are most important and confusing to editors coming from other language Wikipedias.
  • A discussion of Esperanza's role in Wikipedia is being held, with all thoughts of all Esperanzians wanted!
  • Shreshth91 informed everyone that he will be leaving the Esperanza council as life is rather busy; his spot will be filled by the runner up from the last election, HighwayCello.

Operation Magic Carpet

[edit]

From WP:DAB: a code of honor for creating disambiguation pages is to fix all resulting mis-directed links. If you make Operation Magic Carpet a primary topic article about the WWII operation instead of a straight DAB page, you'll have a lot less changes to make. Either way, here's verification of the play you removed http://members.aol.com/amberlanepress/clark_brian.htm --J Clear 01:13, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Quite right, good idea, thanks. If you think the play is notable, by all means put it back. --RobertGtalk 09:10, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know if the play is notable, I think I discovered it and the Yemen op while trying a while back to google for material to write on the WWII op. Got so tied up reading the page I put in as an ext link, that I ran out of time and never got back to it. May put it in as a link to the playwrite's article, if there is one, as it may never be notable enough for an article on its own.--J Clear 01:05, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Visiting the UK

[edit]

P.S.: We are likely going to be in Durham and environs for a couple of weeks in July, for a conference my wife is attending. I'd be glad for any thoughts on what to look for (and look out for); we have never been to that part of the country but are very excited, and I'm afraid we may bite off more than we can chew as far as sight-seeing goes. There are day-trips built into the conference to the Western Isles and a couple of other places (incl. Edinburgh, I believe), for example, but since those are all "scripted" by the conference folks I don't worry so much about them. But I am a long-time Swallows & Amazons fan and hope to take my family to Coniston to see that area...but am not certain of how easy it will be to get there from Durham, or of how crowded it might be at that time of year. Etc. We are obviously a long way away from the departure but I figure it never hurts to think ahead a little. Hoping to stay in touch on this. Merci! --Wspencer11 (talk to me...) 13:44, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Redirect-fodder for RobotG

[edit]

I've left a comment at your toolserver request (I mention this in case your check meta: about as often as I do, i.e., not very). In short, I think the toolserver will be very little use until such time as they get replication of this database up and running, but in the meantime, you may be able to work with the database dump, or I'd be willing to help do so on your behalf. Alai 22:57, 8 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The dumps are freely accessible at http://download.wikipedia.org. I haven't seen much of an explanation or an entity model, but the definitions of the tables needed for this are:

CREATE TABLE `page` (
  `page_id` int(8) unsigned NOT NULL auto_increment,
  `page_namespace` int(11) NOT NULL default '0',

and:

CREATE TABLE `categorylinks` (
  `cl_from` int(8) unsigned NOT NULL default '0',
  `cl_to` varchar(255) binary NOT NULL default ,
  `cl_sortkey` varchar(86) binary NOT NULL default ,
  `cl_timestamp` timestamp(14) NOT NULL,
  UNIQUE KEY `cl_from` (`cl_from`,`cl_to`),
  KEY `cl_sortkey` (`cl_to`,`cl_sortkey`),
  KEY `cl_timestamp` (`cl_to`,`cl_timestamp`));

Let me know what else I can let you know.

The queries I've run are, firstly for the #-style redirects:

mysql WP3110 --batch -e "create table redirectcat (title varchar(255)); \
insert redirectcat select page_title from page where page_namespace=14 and page_is_redirect=1; \
  select * from redirectcat" | tail +2 | awk '{print "*{{cl|" $1 "}}"}' | tr '_' ' ' > redirectcat

output: redirectcat

The current (as of 31st October...) article contents thereof:

 mysql WP3110 --batch -e "create table redirect_art_cat (art varchar(255), cat varchar(255)); \
insert redirect_art_cat select page_title, title from page, redirectcat, categorylinks where page_id=cl_from and title=cl_to; \
  select * from redirect_art_cat" | tail +2 | awk '{print "*[[" $1 "]]", "{{cl|" $2 "}}"}' | tr '_' ' ' > redirect_art_cat

output: redirect_art_cat

I've just noticed that some of the #redirects from categories are cross-namespace, which is a little boggling.

Lastly, the article contents of the categories in WP cat redirects (which seem to have been fixed, already):

 mysql WP3110 --batch -e "create table redirect_WCD_arts (art_id int(8), cat varchar(255)); \
insert redirect_WCD_arts select cl.cl_from, page_title from page as c, categorylinks as wcd, categorylinks as cl \
    where cl.cl_to=page_title and c.page_namespace=14 and c.page_id=wcd.cl_from and wcd.cl_to='Wikipedia_category_redirects'; \
  select page_title, cat from redirect_WCD_arts, page where page_namespace=0 and art_id=page_id" \
    | tail +2 | awk '{print "*[[" $1 "]]", "{{cl|" $2 "}}"}' | tr '_' ' ' > redirect_WCD_arts

output: redirect_WCD_arts

I can rerun these fairly readily after each dump, since I'm already building the page and categorylinks tables for other purposes anyway.

The category redlinks should be fairly easy to obtain too, I'll write and run that a bit later. (That seems much harder to fix automatically though, isn't it?) Alai 18:49, 9 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Here we are: User:Alai/catredlinks. Obviously being now ten days old, some of them have been bluelinked by now, and some may have been emptied... Alai 01:49, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

You're very welcome. No, I'm just working with the two "current versions" table I mentioned above (and pagelinks, this time, but not regularly so). Specifically that's http://download.wikipedia.org/enwiki/20061031/enwiki-20061031-page.sql.gz and http://download.wikipedia.org/enwiki/20061031/enwiki-20061031-categorylinks.sql.gz. Let me just check I understand the requested tweak correctly: you want the categories on User:Alai/redirect_art_cat, but without the duplication of categories, and the articles?

The cross-namespace redirects do seem pretty broken, so you it might be OK just to remove them. In some cases it might be better to add a link to a "see also" section, in others there may be a related category to "repair" it too. In an ideal world, other editors would get the hint and do that themselves if the bot removes them, but I wouldn't be shocked if some low-level grumble about it.

The "WCD" list is obviously redundant if your 'bot is going to scan all of those categories anyway; I thought you were considering modifying it to use only those with 'signs of habitation'. Tradeoff between extra (bot) work, and extra 'lag' in picking up errors, I suppose. Alai 18:40, 10 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Robert, as the other editors and I have been discussing, i am not in violation with copyright, read our discussion please. Fair use images ARE aloud to be used. It wasn't an assumption, it was an observation. A fair use image must actually be used under the terms of fair use: it is not good enough merely to assert that the use is fair: to do so does waste time. I saw that this image had been removed before, and that you had simply replaced it again in spite of a big comment explaining that fair use images were not likely to be available. I did not realise that you had not had this explained to you; this was a mistake, and I apologise. --RobertGtalk 14:48, 11 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

vandalism-like page move

[edit]

Hi

Thanks for the "ancient" mop and bucket job. Could you please help with this new one?: Some normal user "reverted" i.e. circumvented the following admin page move http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Finlandswedes&diff=84847660&oldid=84803373 --Espoo 06:22, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I had a brief look, and it appears the article is now at Swedish-speaking Finns and has not sustained any obvious collateral damage: I can't see that anything needs doing. Am I overlooking something? --RobertGtalk 15:00, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, it was fixed again by the same admin; for some strange reason the change didn't appear on my watchlist although the page is on my watchlist, which is why i didn't realise my request for your help was unnecessary. It seems the watchlist doesn't always show page moves? --Espoo 20:26, 13 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Article name change

[edit]

Hi Robert! just to ensure I get this right I thought it best to check with you. I have just noticed that the Milnsbridge article has been incorrectly titled, It is a small village close to me and links from the Huddersfield article, the correct spelling is Milnesbridge. Would this be better followed up as a page name change request, or in view as Milnsbridge (without the 'e') is the local pronunciation and assumed spelling, would it be better as a redirect. That way anyone spelling it incorrectly would be taken to the correct page. I could then follow up and correct the links as required. Richard Harvey 20:57, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Well! I Think a can of worms may open here :). I used to live, briefly, on Dowker Street, opposite a company called Taylor Valves. Their website shows them to be in Milnesbridge, as do several others in Google. I just went into the local council website and used their visitor car parking search facility. Visitor info Parking the dropdown box in the search shows Milnesbridge. Yet elsewhere their own website also refers to both spellings on the main search facility. I have an old Kirklees street map which shows Milnsbridge plus another which has Milnesbridge. ??? I will follow this up locally before doing anything further on here. Thanks; I think? :) Richard Harvey 10:03, 15 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

American Civil War categories

While I applaud and agree with the decision to replace all "State in the Civil War" categories with "State in the American Civil War," (the right decision), this should have been run by the WP:ACW, who monitors Civil War articles and created them using the original format. Nice work and again, the right thing to do, but please keep us in the loop so that we do not continually write new articles using the older cats (as I did this morning). Thanks!! Over-agressive bot

[edit]

When this bot made the edit Bot: Removing Category:Unemotional fictional characters per CFD, see Wikipedia:Categories for deletion/Log/2006 November 23 -- 08:49, December 1, 2006 It looks like it got just a little too agressive. In addition to the change described, it also moved a bunch of categories down. Until I scroll down (using the diff tool in popups)), I thought the bot had deleted all categories and was considering reverting the change. (That is another feature of popups. Reverts are just one click away.) -Will Pittenger 22:23, 1 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm really sorry, but my bot uses the pywikipedia framework, which tends to group categories together at the bottom of the article, and I have found Wikipedians get very tetchy indeed if this happens! I stick to the article and image namespaces. Sorry I can't oblige. Try one of the other bots at the top of Wikipedia:Categories for discussion/Working? "Category:Footballers who died before retiring"

I see that it has been decided that the existing category Category:Footballers who died tragically young should be deleted or renamed as above. At present the existing category is still "live". Can I simply move this or do I need to start from scratch? Either way, can you leave the existing category live for a day or two to give me time to deal with it - I will send you a note when it is done.

Various other names were suggested e.g. "Category:Footballers who died during their playing careers" or "Category:Footballers who died while active". I must admit that I prefer the first of these but I'm happy to go alnog with whatever you suggest. Daemonic Kangaroo 17:25, 4 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect this article is bogus. It's hard to find out much about it. It could be a cross between cricket and soccer. Whether it has actually ever been played, or is merely a product of someone's fantasy, is hard to determine. Also, congrats on weeding entries by that User:Thugchildz, who is evidently a cricket fancier and has been messing with everything he can find that vaguely has anything to do with cricket. • Thanks for your note. I had also run across this [2] so there does seem to be some evidence for its existence. The question is, how many impromptu schoolyard games merit attention here? Although the lack of much information about early baseball and cricket suggests they were given the same non-attention by chroniclers as we are suggesting giving to "crocker". d:) Wahkeenah 09:46, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

baseball all-star categories

[edit]

Can you please stop the bot and reconsider? This is a very bad decision and didn't get appropriate consideration... the all-star categories by year were very useful. All of the baseball editors except Wknight in the CFD voted to keep, the categorization people were the only ones voting to merge. Also your bot is screwing up with people who went to many all-star games, e.g. [3] so if nothing else that needs to be fixed. --W.marsh 16:45, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

On second thought I guess I can live with it... it's just frustrating how many pages you have to watch like a hawk to have any idea a big change is being considered. At any rate, can you modify the bot so it isn't leaving dozens of the same category in many baseball articles? Thanks. --W.marsh 16:52, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I just meant that baseball article editors might have some perspective on baseball articles that people who don't really know or care about baseball have... after all the articles aren't being read by categorization enthusiasts, they're being read by baseball fans. Your bot is leaving potentially dozens of copies of the same category in articles... even with AWB that should be easilly enough fixed using Regex. But if the only reply you have is one as snooty as the last one, please don't bother. --W.marsh 17:06, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, semantics. By "screwing up" I didn't exactly mean "ruining", just uh, "producing a less than perfect result", as in, leaving a bunch of copies of the same category around. --W.marsh 17:12, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
Well I came across wrong too, I just felt it was urgent because the bot was running and reversing such a thing could be very tedius. Anyway I'll see if I can put together an AWB script to do it myself... shouldn't be that hard. --W.marsh 17:22, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I think AWB removes duplicate categories automatically, doesn't it? I don't think it requires a regex. In fact, I once asked someone why they had removed a category from Lee Smith (baseball) and it turned out AWB had done it without his even realizing (while I didn't realize it was a duplicate to begin with). —Wknight94 (talk) 17:45, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Historic Landmark Categories

[edit]

Could you tell me what's going on with the elimination of supposed duplication of categories for historic landmarks? It's a bit confusing. I find that the pages to which these two category links lead are quite different. Just as one example, "Category:Registered Historic Places in Georgia (US state)" contains 35 pages, while the Georgia section of the List of National Historic Landmarks by state (which contains the Georgia portion of the large category "Category:National Historic Landmarks of the United States") contains only 8 pages. The reason for this discrepancy is apparently the fact that (as it says on the National Historic Landmarks category page) "All NHLs are also listed on the National Register of Historic Places, but not all Register properties are NHLs." It looks to me as though Wikipedia has made the decision to eliminate a supposed duplicate category which is not in fact a duplicate at all, but a larger set. I first noticed this on the Fox Theatre (Atlanta) page, from which your robot recently removed the link to Registered Historic Places in Georgia, which is the larger category at the state level. If one or the other is to be eliminated, it ought to be the smaller one, though I don't think either of them can be removed without damaging the usefulness of the site. Whyaduck 06:10, 13 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

OK, thanks. I see what's going on now. Something is still confusing me about the "by state" page that links from the main list of "Category:National Historic Landmarks of the United States", though. In the main list, one of the first things you see is the link to the article on the Ahwahnee Hotel in California, but there is no mention of the Ahwahnee in the California section of the "by state" list. It turns out that lots of things on the main list aren't on the "by state" list. It seems as though the "by state" page would get the same content as the national list, and any article added to the category would automatically end up on both lists. Isn't there any way to get that to happen? Sometimes its useful to have a list by state rather than a national alphabetical list, but that's not really available if the lists don't have the same content. New day transclude for WP:CFD

Hi there ... for the past few months I've been doing the new day transclude at WP:CFD. This isn't a big deal, since midnight UTC happens around 4pm my time. However, as of tomorrow morning I'm leaving on a trip for a couple of weeks, expect to be back on the 30th. Accusation

[edit]

Deleting a category in direct violation of the category guideline can either be interpreted as bad faith, ignoring of the consensus on how categories are treated, Soapboxing or general ignorance of Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. As you are an admin, I saw it fit to rule out the likelihood of the first and last possibilities, as I assume good faith, expect it in return and generally expect an admin to be competent and knowledgable about how the Wiki community works if they were able to survive an RFA.

That leaves two possibilities, the two being interlinked. Soapboxing is the reason for circumventing consensus using admin authority. Soapboxing is, in this case, soapboxing for a particular view of how Wikipedia should function. User:ProveIt has a history of nominating ethnicity and nationality categories for deletion on the belief that articles on people should not be categorized by the ethnicity of the person in question. While a valid view, it is nonetheless true that such nominations violate consensus on how articles should be categorized and this is also demonstrated on the deletion review for the cat.

By closing debate on such a soapboxing CFD, you naturally become complicit in it, regardless of your personal views on the matter. If I were to advise you on how to deal with AFDs, I'd say review the history of the nominating user first, review what consensus is on the matter and consider informing the relevant Wikiprojects (if any) of the deletion nom before closing debate. This CFD was handled poorly, and I have reason to believe that the CFD itself is just a classic case of disrupting Wikipedia to prove a point. Kari Hazzard (T | C) 14:49, 18 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Comment. I cannot find that the consensus Karimarie cites is relevant to the debate in hand, and I therefore think she has made a mistake. She appears to be invoking the the Wikipedian debater's irregular verb: I am editing in agreement with consensus, you are soapboxing for a position with which I disagree, s/he is disrupting Wikipedia to make a point.
On the grounds that I am not infallible, my normal practice in the face of personal criticism is to withdraw on the grounds that least said, soonest mended. However, in this case I feel to do so would be to allow Karimarie to carry her point by playing the man and not the ball. --RobertGtalk 10:40, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Sorry if I came across as harsh in the category for deletion debate. That wasn't my intention, but sometimes when I am in a debate the sparks fly. If you do a perfect job as an administration person, no one thanks you. Make one, even slightly controversial move, and everyone has an opinion against you. Enjoy the holiday. We can either add them back as two separate categories, or as they were originally, so long as they get to retain their ethnic identity. Cheers. Don't eat the fruitcake, I haven't a clue what's in it, even after reading the Wikipedia entry. --Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) 04:57, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]
