Hi, I was just wondering how you generated that list of adjacent counties for all 50 states? Did you use a program to generate the list? Thanks.

Hi, just a quick not that I have transferred ψ10 from your account to that of Hephaestos (on Wikipedia:WikiMoney) for doing the electoral maps. --snoyes 08:49, 2 Jan 2004 (UTC)

Article Licensing

[edit]

Hi, I've started a drive to get users to multi-license all of their contributions that they've made to either (1) all U.S. state, county, and city articles or (2) all articles, using the Creative Commons Attribution-Share Alike (CC-by-sa) v1.0 and v2.0 Licenses or into the public domain if they prefer. The CC-by-sa license is a true free documentation license that is similar to Wikipedia's license, the GFDL, but it allows other projects, such as WikiTravel, to use our articles. Since you are among the top 1000 Wikipedians by edits, I was wondering if you would be willing to multi-license all of your contributions or at minimum those on the geographic articles. Over 90% of people asked have agreed. For More Information:

To allow us to track those users who muli-license their contributions, many users copy and paste the "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" template into their user page, but there are other options at Template messages/User namespace. The following examples could also copied and pasted into your user page:

Option 1
I agree to multi-license all my contributions, with the exception of my user pages, as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

OR

Option 2
I agree to multi-license all my contributions to any U.S. state, county, or city article as described below:
DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual

Or if you wanted to place your work into the public domain, you could replace "DualLicenseWithCC-BySA-Dual" with "MultiLicensePD". If you only prefer using the GFDL, I would like to know that too. Please let me know what you think at my talk page. It's important to know either way so no one keeps asking. -- Ram-Man (comment| talk)

Dear Robla, you asked (1 Aug 2005): "Markus, why did you remove this link?" I removed that link because at that time, when it was added, that article, to which this link referred, didn't yet work. Markus Schulze 1 Aug 2005

U.S. presidential elections

[edit]

Hi there:

I appreciate you chiming in on the minimum PV % issue, even though you undercut my side. <rueful grin /> Anyway, I was wondering if you'd like to weigh in on some issues:

 • Should there be some sort of cutoff for an individual to be displayed in the elections results tables (on the individual pages)? (This applies only to people who get 0 electoral votes; everyone who gets an electoral vote should be included.) If so, should it be a minimum PV %age? If so, what should that minimum %age be?
 • How many decimal places should appear in the PV %age?
 • Should we break out "write-ins" if they exceed the minimum PV %age?
 • Do you know of a better, more accurate source than Leip's Atlas for sourcing the PV information?

Also, if you know of any other users who might want to weigh in, please contact them or let me know so that I can contact them.

Basically, I'd just really, really like to get some standards established for the results tables.

Any help you can give would be appreciated.

Rob, in the Palouse article you say: "Washington, Idaho, and Oregon," but, in the list of "counties" in the Palouse, no Oregon counties are listed. How can that be? WikiDon 16:48, 3 September 2005 (UTC)[reply]

 • Yep. I read Pareto efficiency yesterday with acceptance, then puzzlement & disbelief. Fortunately a source complete with p. number was given at the bottom. I just happened to have the book on my shelf and corrected the last sentence of the lead (with a "no" and "strictly preferred"). Not the first time either. Multiply that by many millions, many readers, & Wiki ethics, and you see some remarkable results. BW, Thomasmeeks 20:57, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Meetups, events, local chapters

[edit]

Hi Rob,

There's currently some renewed discussion about whether and how to set up [a] US wikimedia chapter[s]. Among other things this could help better organize meetups, gatherings at large events and cons, and local outreach. I'm notifying people who have been actively involved in local meetups; if you are interested, there is a quiet mailing-list and a meta-page on the topic... both of which could use input and ideas. +sj + 17:22, 17 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Joe Lieberman article

[edit]

Hi there.

You seem to be a "cooler head." I'm fine with the alterations you made to make the article fair to both sides, including changing some of my language. LionO seems to be intent on removing true and relevant facts from the article. I ask for help in trying to keep the facts in, even though LionO seems to want nothing incovenient to JL in the article. If you look at his first round of edits, they were outrageous. This time, they were less so, until he just removed facts again.

Thanks,

Invitation to Meetup/Seattle6, a focus group

[edit]

Hello. I'm part of a research group at the University of Washington (Seattle campus), and my group is reaching out to Wikipedians in the Puget Sound area. We're hosting a focus group designed to gather information on what Wikipedians would like to know about each other when interacting on Wikipedia. Our end goal is to create an embedded application that helps people quickly know more about others' history and activity on Wikipedia, and we feel our design will be much more useful if it's based on insights of users like you.

I'm hoping that the chance to help out local researchers, to engage in lively face-to-face discussion with other Seattle Wikipedians, and to contribute to Wikipedia in a new way will entice you to join us. The session lasts 2 hours and snacks are provided. Sessions will be held on UW Seattle campus - directions will be sent after registration. Your contribution will be greatly appreciated!

Willing and able to help us out? RSVP here. Want to know more? Visit our user talk page . Please help us contact other local Wikipedians, too! Commprac01 (talk) 00:51, 15 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Mention of your JSON Widget

[edit]

Greetings RobLa, I mentioned one of your past experiments, here and I was wondering if you have worked on that project at all recently, or whether you know of any other open-source projects that implement your idea. Also, do you have any Wikibooks that you've written? dr.ef.tymac (talk) 01:32, 16 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

No, I haven't....events overtook my ability to stay on top of it. I've thought about the project quite a bit in the past few years, but nothing that has manifested itself as actual code.
A couple places to dig:
 • jqgrid - this looks the most promising of the jsonwidget-ish things I've seen to date, but I've only investigated at a surface level
 • I'd generally look through the form tools here: http://jquerylist.com/
Good luck! -- RobLa (talk) 06:41, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flagged revs labs

[edit]

Hello. I replied concerning the new icon to avoid confusion with search.

Also, I was bold and edited this MediaWiki message : MediaWiki:Revreview-edited. Having "?" as a link title is unhelpful. It is discouraged both by accessibility and usability guidelines. We recommend an explicit link title, sufficient to describe the purpose of the link. So I was bold and made an edit right away.

However, I believe you might want to rework it. I probably did that in an unusual way. Once we agree on a final version, we will have to change it a translatewiki I guess. Yours, Dodoïste (talk) 01:54, 25 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

1340s redraft

[edit]

Hi Rob, sorry for the delay in getting back to you about the 1340s redraft. The reason it's not in mainspace yet is because much of it is incomplete: I still have many areas to expand, citations to verify and libraries to research. It's far from ready to be integrated into the main article at 1340s, and until it is it's more manageable and best to keep it in userspace. I have the intention of seeing this through as the experimental new style of decade artciles, but at the moment I would not be able to give this the attention it deserves. When I am able to devote more time to it in a few months I will be ready to move it to articlespace.

I hope this answers your question. Regards, --Grimhelm (talk) 20:13, 27 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

How to get a wiki using FlaggedRevs to look like the PC Trial here

[edit]

Back when the PC Trial was still going on, I loved the implementation of FlaggedRevs here. Unfortunately, it looks like FlaggedRevs out of the box doesn't look much like the PC Trial. I tried copying the settings from here but on my wiki it looks like those settings are missing a couple of system messages. If you could offer any advise on this issue and other ways that I may need to configure FlaggedRevs to look like the PC Trial, I'd greatly appreciate it.

For this implementation, I don't really need a full reviewing functionality (i.e. quality, accuracy, all of that), just basically Pending Changes protection across several pages I'll be creating so that only authorized users can make new changes viewable by default (i.e. approve changes). I'm sure you're going to tell me I'm using a nuclear warhead to kill a fly. Still, help is appreciated if you have the time. Feel free to reply here and place a talkback template on my page, or simply reply there. Thank you in advance for your assistance!--PolicyReformer (talk) 04:11, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Still having issues configuring this of course. Since you're not logged in to my wiki, I'm guessing you won't see the FlaggedRevs issue I'm talking about. Uploaded [a picture] on that wiki so you can take a look. And just for a chuckle, check the timestamps between these two posts to determine how long it took me to enable image uploads on the wiki.PolicyReformer (talk) 04:39, 21 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

MSU Interview

[edit]

Dear RobLa,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

 • Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
 • Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
 • All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
 • All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
 • The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. If interested, please send me an email at obar@msu.edu (to maintain anonymity) and I will add your name to my offline contact list. If you feel comfortable doing so, you can post your nameHERE instead.

If you have questions or concerns at any time, feel free to email me at obar@msu.edu. I will be more than happy to speak with you.

Thanks in advance for your help. We have a lot to learn from you.

Sincerely,

Jonathan Obar --Jaobar (talk) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 35.9.34.167 (talk) 20:54, 22 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Pending changes

Hi, I see that you've been a contributor at Template:Pending changes, and I was wondering if you'd be willing to give me some input on something. I'm proposing a few changes at WP:Pending changes/Adjwilley, where I've modified the table quite a bit. I was hoping you could have a look at it, and perhaps set me straight where I've made mistakes. Heh

[edit]

I didn't notice you've been working for the WMF for two+ years now. I was implementing the latest Pending Changes RfC close when I saw your name come up on an interface message. You missed my failed RfA, it was mildly amusing in a punch-in-the-gut sort of way. Anyway I'm looking for the message on the protection interface that says "Pending changes (?) (do not use on articles per RFC result)". We've got consensus to turn PC level 1 only back on on December 1, so if you could find that and update it to say something like "do not use 'everyone except Reviewers' option" instead then I'd appreciate it. Gigs (talk) 02:06, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Gigs, good to hear from you. I'm confused as to what you'd like me to do here, and I'm not sure I'm the person to do it anyway. Are you looking for someone to say something on behalf of the WMF, or as an admin, or something else? -- RobLa (talk) 05:26, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you know what interface file that message is in, you could edit it as an admin, you have editinterface rights. I'm having trouble even finding where it's at. Gigs (talk) 18:48, 29 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination of World for deletion

[edit]

A discussion is taking place as to whether the article World is suitable for inclusion in Wikipedia according to Wikipedia's policies and guidelines or whether it should be deleted.

The article will be discussed at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/World until a consensus is reached, and anyone is welcome to contribute to the discussion. The nomination will explain the policies and guidelines which are of concern. The discussion focuses on high-quality evidence and our policies and guidelines.

Users may edit the article during the discussion, including to improve the article to address concerns raised in the discussion. However, do not remove the article-for-deletion notice from the top of the article. Mr. Guye (talk) 02:44, 1 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Electowidget

[edit]

Hey RobLa, I know you from electorama. I read Electowidget but I couldn't understand if that widget supports complicated voting systems such as Meek STV? Does it support Schulze STV or any other proportional Condorcet method? We want to choose a suitable voting system for the Persian Wikipedia ArbCom elections as you can see here. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Information icon Please do not remove speedy deletion notices from pages you have created yourself, as you did with User:Fred J. This will allow you to make your case on the article's talk page. Administrators will consider your reasoning before deciding what to do with the article. Thank you.  Velella  Velella Talk   10:34, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I did reply on the page that was linked to. Note, I fixed your links when I added this comment. I summaried the discussion, and moved the detail to User talk:Fred J. Martin, Jr./2015-12-06 newbie cruft, since those messages were really only useful if Fred takes interest in becoming a Wikilawyer himself. -- RobLa (talk) 19:25, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I'll also note that Fred created the first version of the User:Fred J. Martin, Jr. page. I only swooped in when I saw it was put up for G11 Speedy Deletion. -- RobLa (talk) 19:27, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

User:Fred J. Martin, Jr

[edit]

It is very unclear what you are doing at the above page. This is structured as a user page and since you are not the user any edits might be construed as vandalism. However, I suspect that this is simply in the wrong place and should be at Draft:Fred J. Martin, Jr. If you agree then you can move the article yourself, or, if it is not clear how move works, I would be happy to do it if you reply here. Regards  Velella  Velella Talk   17:34, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm trying to ease Fred into editing Wikipedia while at the same time 1) avoiding having his user page inexplicitly disappear or be plastered with warning billboards, 2) give people some idea of who he is if/when he does make new edits on his own time, 3) make him feel like editing Wikipedia is actually worth his time and 4) without making mentoring him my full time job. Would it be ok to leave the stub I put there until a time that I actually have time to get together with him to make a proper user page? -- RobLa (talk) 19:16, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Much much better just to start it as a proper draft using article for creation process. That way it is protected for a reasonable time against deletion and you, or anybody else for that matter can work on it leisure. At present it looks very much as though you and User:Fred J. Martin, Jr are one and the same person. This is a practice which is seriously deprecated on Wikipedia so it would be better to do things the right way. Using what appears to be a user page to construct an article is very much the wrong way.  Velella  Velella Talk   22:52, 7 December 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, you're right. We should abandon the pre-2007 techniques I'm using to quickly create a user page for a new user. Editing Wikipedia was fun pre-2007, but I'm obviously too much of a romantic. We should abandon deprecated practices, and aspire to teach our modern techniques of sternly reprimanding everyone about policy adherence, since that clearly will make Wikipedia a higher quality product. Extended confirmed protection

[edit]

Hello, RobLa. This message is intended to notify administrators of important changes to the protection policy.

Extended confirmed protection (also known as "30/500 protection") is a new level of page protection that only allows edits from accounts at least 30 days old and with 500 edits. The automatically assigned "extended confirmed" user right was created for this purpose. The protection level was created following this community discussion with the primary intention of enforcing various arbitration remedies that prohibited editors under the "30 days/500 edits" threshold to edit certain topic areas.

In July and August 2016, a request for comment established consensus for community use of the new protection level. Administrators are authorized to apply extended confirmed protection to combat any form of disruption (e.g. vandalism, sock puppetry, edit warring, etc.) on any topic, subject to the following conditions:

 • Extended confirmed protection may only be used in cases where semi-protection has proven ineffective. It should not be used as a first resort.
 • A bot will post a notification at Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard of each use. MusikBot currently does this by updating a report, which is transcluded onto the noticeboard.

Please review the protection policy carefully before using this new level of protection on pages. Thank you.
This message was sent to the administrators' mass message list. To opt-out of future messages, please remove yourself from the list. 17:49, 23 September 2016 (UTC)

Two-Factor Authentication now available for admins

[edit]

Hello,

Please note that TOTP based two-factor authentication is now available for all administrators. In light of the recent compromised accounts, you are encouraged to add this additional layer of security to your account. It may be enabled on your preferences page in the "User profile" tab under the "Basic information" section. For basic instructions on how to enable two-factor authentication, please see the developing help page for additional information. Important: Be sure to record the two-factor authentication key and the single use keys. If you lose your two factor authentication and do not have the keys, it's possible that your account will not be recoverable. Furthermore, you are encouraged to utilize a unique password and two-factor authentication for the email account associated with your Wikimedia account. This measure will assist in safeguarding your account from malicious password resets. Comments, questions, and concerns may be directed to the thread on the administrators' noticeboard. A new user right for New Page Patrollers

[edit]

Hi RobLa.

A new user group, New Page Reviewer, has been created in a move to greatly improve the standard of new page patrolling. The user right can be granted by any admin at PERM. It is highly recommended that admins look beyond the simple numerical threshold and satisfy themselves that the candidates have the required skills of communication and an advanced knowledge of notability and deletion. Admins are automatically included in this user right.

It is anticipated that this user right will significantly reduce the work load of admins who patrol the performance of the patrollers. However, due to the complexity of the rollout, some rights may have been accorded that may later need to be withdrawn, so some help will still be needed to some extent when discovering wrongly applied deletion tags or inappropriate pages that escape the attention of less experienced reviewers, and above all, hasty and bitey tagging for maintenance. User warnings are available here but very often a friendly custom message works best.

If you have any questions about this user right, don't hesitate to join us at WT:NPR. (Sent to all admins).MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 13:47, 15 November 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, a little how-to question. I found you on my quest to learn more on importing articles. Any advise? I have to import and translate this article from the https://fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sommet_de_la_Terre = Earth Summits in English - to the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earth_Summits which is a redirect to just 1 of the Earth Summmits, which is wrong. Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Nebraska's 1st congressional district, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page NE 1 (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

A tag has been placed on Effects of different voting systems under similar circumstances requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section R2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect from the article namespace to a different namespace except the Category, Template, Wikipedia, Help, or Portal namespaces.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be deleted without delay. Administrator account security (Correction to Arbcom 2019 special circular)

[edit]

ArbCom would like to apologise and correct our previous mass message in light of the response from the community.

Since November 2018, six administrator accounts have been compromised and temporarily desysopped. In an effort to help improve account security, our intention was to remind administrators of existing policies on account security — that they are required to "have strong passwords and follow appropriate personal security practices." We have updated our procedures to ensure that we enforce these policies more strictly in the future. The policies themselves have not changed. In particular, two-factor authentication remains an optional means of adding extra security to your account. The choice not to enable 2FA will not be considered when deciding to restore sysop privileges to administrator accounts that were compromised.

We are sorry for the wording of our previous message, which did not accurately convey this, and deeply regret the tone in which it was delivered.

For the Arbitration Committee, -Cameron11598 21:04, 4 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
