Discussion on original research

"Bucket" article
[edit]Hi! With all the really strange personal projects that people try and write about, it's inevitable that something like this gets deleted as a vanity article. I'll gladly restore the article and extend apologies to you and to Lambertr. --PMDrive1061 (talk) 23:18, 2 December 2009 (UTC)
WikiProject Ramblings
[edit]I was searching around on different WikiProject pages and came across Wikipedia:WikiProject Russia which has a really cool layout and utilizes nav boxes for their lists of info. Something that can be messed with in the future, after the main WSPA Template is made. I'm also going to make a quick list of the three WSPA DYK articles on the project page, because I've noticed a few project pages show off what articles of theirs have been featured/DYK/etc. Once you have the WSPA template and tag the IUPUI collection, it'll pull together nicely. Template dimensions
[edit]I know a few people have been updating the Artwork Infobox Template - I don't know if this is spurred by the conference or just happenstance, either way, it's great people are working on it still. However, some of my articles now have broken links and I've been trying to fix them - in doing so I found that I have no clue what's going on with the new dimensions system. Before it was relatively straight forward and I could explain it to people (even the brave high schooler?) - not so anymore. Not pertinent this very second, but - help? I may or may not be whimpering right now. HstryQT (talk) 23:57, 16 April 2010 (UTC)
Good evening Richard:
[edit](at least it is if you like snow and yearn for a White Christmas)
I am beginning to suspect that we share many interests and as a way of introduction, I just went to your article Lincoln Monument of Wabash, Indiana an noticed that I’d started, or at least had a lot to do with the article about Charles Keck. I am attempting to figure out exactly what the wikipedia art project that you are associated with is about and since my life does not seem to function in linear time and/or space, am having a bit of a time of it. Not to fear, I shall be lurking around (but in a good way) and hopefully can make some positive contributions. Life is supposed to be interesting. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 00:40, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
- Nice to hear from you. I am currently trying to figure out public domain so that I can post a photo of Karl Bitter's model of the Depew Fountain at that article. I see that you are based in Indianapolis, a city that I have done several "drive bys", searching for sculpture and architecture for my main interest, found here - [www.archsculptbooks.com]. You have raised a series of interesting points in your message to me, some ones that I've been engaged with for quite a long time. I have definite anarchist tendencies that make me mostly go my own way, but it appears that this way could well include many miles trudging side-by-side with you. it should be an interesting and enjoyable journey. Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 18:14, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Well I got the picture up and was interested to note that the picture of the fountain that i uploaded 5 years ago was still there. Who knew? Carptrash (talk) 18:24, 24 December 2009 (UTC) Nice work. I never knew such a drawing existed. A few diff't times people have tried to merge that article into Indiana World War Memorial Plaza, but I always pull it back into it's own article. I'm all for you going your own way and me going mine, because in the end there's plenty of room for all of us to go in some way. But I think if we set out some big over arching goals for a number of people to work on, we could really get somewhere. Looking forward to hearing more from you. --Richard McCoy (talk) 18:30, 24 December 2009 (UTC)
Thanks
[edit]Saw your comment here. Thanks. As you can tell, that article is sort-of my baby :)
My long term goal is to make that article complete by (a) scanning all the rest of the photographs in the Hendricks catalog and (b) adding and scanning everything from the Foster catalog.
At which point, I suspect it will be one of the longest articles on Wikipedia by total text. (It's around #650 right now) and certainly the longest by print length (it's 115 printed pages now). Raul654 (talk) 23:52, 17 March 2010 (UTC)

Idea?
[edit]Hi Poulpy,
Forgive my English on your talk page, but I can write so very little French. I wonder if you'd consider having a more formalized role with WSPA and becoming part of the project leadership. The project is starting to take off a bit again. We now how folks in Indianapolis, Milwaukee, and Washington D.C. making articles about public art in Wikipedia.
Would you like to have a link to your project on the main page of our project, like we've done for the others?
Also, it'd be super cool if there were a project notice in French and a Userbox. We invite you to use or modify these. Likewise, we'd be thrilled to have a French WSPA barnstar. I'm not really sure how to link that over here in this encycopedia.
But it would be great to have you more formally on board with the project. I'm not indicating that you'd actually have to do more work, but perhaps simply provide a point of contact for others in FR WP that are interested in doing WSPA work.
Kind regards, --RichardMcCoy (d) 15 octobre 2010 à 13:55 (CEST)
- Hello RichardMcCoy,
- Thank you for considering me for the project. I'm not sure if I'm qualified enough to join the project leadership, since I have no arts background, but I can still take part in it.
- Currently, the french public art project isn't really active. I might want to expand it a bit before having a link to it on the main WPSPA project. Anyway, there aren't many people around here writing about public art; advertising it might do good. I'll try and focus on it.
- Best regards, Poulpy (talk) 13:23, 21 October 2010 (UTC)
- Hi Poulpy,
- You certainly don't need to have any sort of arts background. I don't! We were just so impressed and inspired by your initial Paris public art list that we thought it'd make sense to formally associate it with WSPA. Whatever ideas you have for spreading the word, one way or another, are appreciated. But as Richard said, not trying to cause you more work. Also, I appreciate you being a point of contact for me throughout my various Wikipedia projects. Thank you for your help! HstryQT (talk) 15:04, 21 October 2010 (UTC)

Wow, this is pretty awesome! Thanks very much for recognizing my efforts here!
While I have taken this project on as a kind of personal cause, I really am just one of the project leaders, so to that end I've shared the award with Jgmikulay, HstryQT, Missvain, and Claudiamoon, all of whom have played an integral part in making WSPA a great project.
It's this kind of attention that gives us all a kind of kick in the pants to keep trying to make the project bigger and better.

Orphaned non-free media (File:IUPUI_Museum_Studies_Program_Logo.jpg)
[edit]Thanks for uploading File:IUPUI_Museum_Studies_Program_Logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).
If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 02:10, 12 November 2010 (UTC)

Speedy deletion nomination of Abraham Lincoln (Jones)
[edit]A tag has been placed on Abraham Lincoln (Jones), requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is a redirect to an article talk page, file description page, file talk page, MediaWiki page, MediaWiki talk page, category talk page, portal talk page, template talk page, help talk, user page, user talk or special page from the main/article space.
If you can fix the redirect to point to a mainspace page, please do so and remove the speedy deletion tag. However, please do not remove the speedy deletion tag unless you are fixing the redirect. If you think the redirect should be retained as is for some reason, you can request that administrators wait a while before deleting it. To do this, affix the template {{hangon}}
to the page and state your reasoning on the article's talk page. Feel free to leave a note on my talk page if you have any questions about this. DASHBot (talk) 00:00, 6 December 2010 (UTC)

Italic titles
[edit]I think the goalposts may have moved during your public art project: see Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style_(visual_arts)#Italic_titles. The MOS, a guideline, is out of step with WP:Article titles, a policy. So all the Statehouse statues etc should have italic titles, as far as I can see! PamD (talk) 17:14, 27 January 2011 (UTC)
- And I've now discovered that the {{italic title}} template is subtle enough to italicise the main title but not the disambiguation in brackets. Neat. So I guess all the articles from your project, unless they've already got it, need {{italic title}} added. PamD (talk) 09:10, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I think I understand. Would you suggest making this change at the template level, also? {{subst:Public art article}} --RichardMcCoy (talk) 12:28, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- I hadn't seen that template before. It's a "template" in a different sense of the word from normal WP usage, and I wonder whether it's a good thing - does it make it too easy for someone to produce a shambolic article? Setting that aside, I think the italicisation should probably be in {{Infobox artwork}}, as it already is in {{Infobox book}} etc. I've left a message at Template_talk:Infobox_artwork#Italicization. PamD (talk) 14:27, 28 January 2011 (UTC)
- Many thanks, Pam for looking at the template. We could be so lucky to have people willing to produce shambolic articles about public art. That template not only keeps the articles somewhat standardized, but works to teach users on what they should be looking for to create an article about public art. I think I understand how it should be in the infobox for artworks, but that thing is a wonky mess, too. Best, --RichardMcCoy (talk) 01:02, 29 January 2011 (UTC)

Categorizing files on Commons
[edit]Hi there RichardMcCoy, just a note, if a file is being hosted at Commons, it should be categorized there, not here on Wikipedia. Categorizing images here makes the page eligible for speedy deletion under F2. Thank you. — ξxplicit 20:45, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
I don't know what this means. It seems to be beneficial to have files well categorized in both WP and The Commons. F2 does not explain this at all.--RichardMcCoy (talk) 23:32, 31 January 2011 (UTC)
- What they mean is that there is a separate category hierarchy in Commons, and images uploaded there should use those categories, not Wikipedia categories. I'm going to be using a category tree for the Children's Museum images - - all in Commons, not here in Wikipedia. There's no reason why you can't create a public art category, or any other for that matter, in Commons. Does that help? HstryQT (talk) 00:35, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Conceptually, kind of. But practically, no, it doesn't help. I'd like to see all things categorized as one thing and be able to see stuff that is in the Commons, too, in WP. If they are not categorized in WP, then you can't see them in WP. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 01:41, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- This issue has come up a lot and consensus has continually favored against categorizing on both projects because it doubles the effort for little gain. Although I can't find the most recent discussion regarding the matter at this moment, which I believe happened as recently as in the second half of last year, there is this discussion from 2009 as an example. — ξxplicit 04:02, 1 February 2011 (UTC)
- Thanks. That's a start of a discussion, but the matter does not seem resolved. It seems that at least on other agreed with me. If images are not categorized in WP than they will not be found by users that are not looking in the Commons. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 15:39, 1 February 2011 (UTC)

Conservation-restoration of silver
[edit]Hey Richard, thanks for your note. I'd be glad to explain what I meant. While the article is certainly very well-sourced and has lots of potential, its tone in some places is not encyclopedic. This is easy to fix though, here are the main issues I see:
- WARNING - Cleaning methods that involve heat may be dangerous to silver tableware such as candlesticks or knife handles. - This sounds like a how-to guide or instruction manual. It would make more sense if you removed "WARNING".
- The second paragraph of the "Lacquering" section, using phrases like "Gloves should be worn at all times", reads like an instruction manual.
- In some spots, you write words using all capital letters, which is distracting. See for example, RED and BLUE compounds.
- Your article dives right into the subject matter, which is admirable in some ways, but you need to comply with Wikipedia's guidelines on lead sections. See Conservation of ivory for an example of what your lead could look like.
Once you address these issues and resubmit, another reviewer (not myself) will check it out for any issues I missed, and it should be accepted. :) --Cerebellum (talk) 21:46, 18 March 2012 (UTC)
Thanks! That's a lot more helpful. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 21:52, 18 March 2012 (UTC)

IMA Artwork Navbox
[edit]Hi Richard, I noticed you a started Navbox template for the IMA. If you would like, I wouldn't mind finishing it up as my next main project. I'm partially done with the Wee Mask page, but I want to do a bit more research so I was thinking of putting it on hold for a little. I know you started the Navbox so I didn't want to take over a project you are actively working on, but if you wanted the help I'm more than happy to take it on. --AngelKelley (talk) 18:06, 12 May 2012 (UTC)
- sounds good to me. I had thought about sortingte artworks in that navbox by curatorial collection ... A bit tedious. Feel free to do it whatever way makes sense to you. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 22:04, 13 May 2012 (UTC)
- I'll start entering the rest of the list today then. I'll keep you updated. --AngelKelley (talk) 16:03, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- I think I have a working Navbox template now: Template:Indianapolis Museum of Art artworks. I wasn't sure if there were categories for the outdoor works so I left out subcategories for them, but the rest are classified by the department listed for each in the IMA collection database. There were three that didn't technically have an associated collection on the IMA site though so I added them where they should be, but I don't know if you will want that changed or not. They are: Guardian figure, Healing of Abiku Children, Helmet mask (Tatanua). Let me know if you would like anything changed around and I'd be happy to edit it. --AngelKelley (talk) 19:40, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- Nice work! You're pretty awesome at this. I was trying to figure out how to add the template that I made for outdoor artworks to this ... or do you think they should all be merged and then sorted by department? Template:IMAart. I think that the lists should be separate because by having the outdoor works distinct, one can find them by their GPS coordinates. This information is trivial for indoor artworks. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 20:40, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thanks :) I hadn't seen your outdoor works template, but I definitely think it looks better your way. I like the categories as you have them broken down, and I'm thinking it might be bwtter to keep the seperation between indoor and outdoor works. There is such a large difference in artistic styles between indoor and outdoor that I think merging them all might deter some viewers. I'll try to merge the two as they are right now so we can get a better idea of what it will look like and then we can make adjustments from there, or revert back as needed. --AngelKelley (talk) 21:12, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
Great! I've asked another friend to look into it. It's called "nesting" a template. If they are nested, than if someone edits the outdoor one, it would automatically appear in the regular one. It'd be great to have yours be the sort of mother template ... --RichardMcCoy (talk) 21:14, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- Sounds good to me. I tried looking over the Help pages for nesting and it is admittedly a bit over my head. I nested the second template just to see what it would look like, but I can't figure out how to format the parameters. Hopefully your friend can make it look better for us. --AngelKelley (talk) 21:42, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- Hmm... on second thought, maybe we should just merge all of these into one template and continue to sort by collection ... Let's think about it for a bit.--RichardMcCoy (talk) 22:20, 14 May 2012 (UTC)
- I have tried everything I could find to try and nest only a portion of the template, but I can't get it to work (even though the Help pages say it should be possible). In any event, I did one more quick edit to change it to a single template with subcategories. If your friend can figure out the nesting then that would be great, but if not, we at least have a backup option this way.--AngelKelley (talk) 22:50, 14 May 2012 (UTC)

Image Usage
[edit]Richard, as I was creating the Face mask (We people) page I discovered that there is a stub page for the Krahn (some sources lump the Wee in with this ethnic group), but there is no page for the Wee people. Anyhow, I want to try and create a separate page for this group so I can link to it on the Face mask collection item page, but I'm curious to know if I am allowed to use the Face mask image on this other page in lieu of an image of the Wee people. It would obviously be captioned to cite the IMA, but I wasn't sure if this would be considered appropriate usage of the image file. Any guidance you can offer would be appreciated. Thanks, -AngelKelley (talk) 17:49, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- In short, yes. But I recommend you become familiar with the Wikipedia:Image use policy. This is useful not only for understanding how images can be used in WP, but also for understanding copyright law as it relates to images of artworks -- this is good to know working in museums. You can all check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Public art/Image guide, which covers the material in a bit more of a straightforward way. Best, --RichardMcCoy (talk) 18:28, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- Thank you! Truthfully, copyright laws always leave me feeling uneasy as it is so easy to make a small error that escalates. I'll be sure to add both the pages you mentioned to my bookmarks though. Thanks again,-AngelKelley (talk) 18:32, 16 May 2012 (UTC)
- Yes, it's painful to try and get your brain around. Don't worry about understanding it all the way through the first time -- I still don't understand it all ... --RichardMcCoy (talk) 18:33, 16 May 2012 (UTC)

Ritual wine server (guang)
[edit]Hi Richard, I have a question: is it possible to gather further descriptive information for the wine vessel either through IMA handbook/catalog publications or through some form of consultation with a staff member at the museum? The Chinese vessel I'm working on clearly depicts some type of animal on the lid, which looks similar to the battle-horned dragon of a guang at the [Brooklyn Museum] and the handle looks like part of a creature as well, but I can't tell if it is a bird like the one on a guang at the [Metropolitan Museum of Art], or something else. The IMA collection description is pretty limited on this one and I would love to be able to offer a more in-depth description for the Wikipedia article. I will message Zambonia to see if her handbook has something additional, but if not, are there any other options open for these types of situations? Thanks. -AngelKelley (talk) 16:49, 21 May 2012 (UTC)
- I have another quick question. I just created the page for this item by clicking the red link in the IMA artwork list, but I just noticed that it lists the page name as Ritual wine server instead of Ritual wine server (guang) like our Navbox Template does. Should I change the name in the Navbox, or would it be better to move the page to a different name?--AngelKelley (talk) 19:16, 22 May 2012 (UTC)
- Nah, it's good. I just edited the Nav Template.--RichardMcCoy (talk) 20:45, 22 May 2012 (UTC)

Hi Richard, it appears someone has gone in and changed the name of our Ritual wine server article to Ritual wine server (''guang''), Indianapolis Museum of Art, 60.43. This unfortunately means that all links to the original article now link to a generic ritual wine server page. Plus, he removed the bold text the headed up the first paragraph that is typical of all Wiki pages. I understand why he made the title change since it would be too confusing given the generic page, but it throws off our page and makes it lack the same cohesive design as all our other pages. Do you by chance have a recommendation for a better name for our article so that we can mark the two pages distinct without making the title look so cluttered? Ive been trying to think of a compromise that doesn't completely change the museum object listing title, but I'm at a loss with this one. AngelKelley (talk) 16:58, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- The title is fine, and many of the IMA objects have disambiguated titles, and others, life "Storage jar" would need them if the articles were created. I have piped the main incoming links & the others can easily be done. There is in fact no requirement to repeat and bold the article title in the lead - see WP:LEAD. Johnbod (talk) 17:27, 17 August 2012 (UTC)
- I'm not sure what to say. Johnbod has his method for doing things and generally gets them done his way ... I suggest moving this discussion to the talk page of that article.--RichardMcCoy (talk) 17:38, 17 August 2012 (UTC)

Throwback (3/3) etc
[edit]I see you have done a few such moves, probably in reponse to my earlier edits on some of these articles. Was this discussed anywhere? Prima facie: a) the new titles are likely to puzzle some readers, and b) it seems unencyclopedic to restrict a stub to one particular copy of an edition. This is against guidelines for books and prints, which is perhaps a rather different situation, but the case needs to be made. It would normally be absurd to have this and Throwback (1/3), Throwback (2/3) as different articles, unless there were special reasons, for example with LOVE (Indianapolis). But for standard copies it seems a backward step. Are you going to Wikimania? Johnbod (talk) 13:04, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- i was gonna say that i prefer the naming convention from music such as "Aurora (di Suvero)". i see a lot of people like "The Hedgehog and the Fox (sculpture)", but i don't see a consensus. 198.24.31.118 (talk) 16:11, 2 July 2012 (UTC)
- There isn't a clear convention; it partly depends how famous the artist is, but in general eg Deposition of Christ (Fra Angelico) is preferred for art. But Throwback (Smith) isn't much help to readers, nor, imo, Throwback (3/3). In this case Throwback (sculpture) works best, again imo. See WP:VAMOS for more. Johnbod (talk) 19:40, 2 July 2012 (UTC)

Cummins HQ and NRHP
[edit]I see that you added a WikiProject NRHP banner to Talk:Cummins Corporate Office Building. Was this a mistake? Speedy deletion nomination of File:IndianaStateHouseRotundaSculpture.jpg
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:IndianaStateHouseRotundaSculpture.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.
If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Contest this speedy deletion". Disambiguation link notification for October 17
[edit]Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Brose Partington, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Entangled. [edit]Thank you for uploading File:Eskenazi Health Logo.png. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.
If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Speedy deletion nomination of File:JusticeDoyle.jpg
[edit]A tag has been placed on File:JusticeDoyle.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia.
This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. Categories
[edit]Hi! Since Conservation & restoration has its own subcat of the Art history and also Category:Museology, per WP:OCAT the individual articles should not also be in the parent cats. Articles should only be in one level of the tree. Equally, Category:Museum collections is only for articles on individual collections, not topical articles. Perhaps other curation topics need a new category, but they should not be mixed in here. Johnbod (talk) 03:42, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks! But I guess I don't follow. Can you show me an example of an article that has the right and wrong categories?--RichardMcCoy (talk) 11:48, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
- Actually it's WP:SUBCAT that applies, which says: "Apart from certain exceptions (i.e. non-diffusing subcategories, see below), an article should be categorised as low down in the category hierarchy as possible, without duplication in parent categories above it. In other words, a page or category should rarely be placed in both a category and a subcategory or parent category (supercategory) of that category (unless the child category is non-diffusing – see below – or eponymous). For example, the article "Paris" need only be placed in "Category:Cities in France", not in both "Category:Cities in France" and "Category:Populated places in France". Because the first category (cities) is in the second category (populated places), readers are already given the information that Paris is a populated place in France by it being a city in France."
- I notice that these articles all seem to be in far too many levels just within the "Conservation and restoration" tree, but are not in obvious categories they should be in - eg "Conservation and restoration of archaeological sites" is not in ANY archaeological category, despite the fact it clearly relates at least as much to that tree as to the museum tree. Likewise the Smithsonian one was not in the Smithsonian tree. The same for the clocks, copper, fresco categories. This shows a "secret garden" mentality, of not thinking about the integration of this material into the wider project. It also reduces the visibility of the articles, since these trees will get far more traffic than the "Conservation and restoration" tree.
- Btw, I don't, as you suggest a few sections above, "have my own way of doing things"; like other experienced Wikipedians I just understand the policies and apply them. When articles are added at several levels in a tree the categories just become clogged up and unusable. The "cultural heritage" category would be many thousand items long if everybody acted as you do. I'll do a couple of these articles correctly as examples (if you don't do the rest, at some point I or someone else will).
- Btw, the big "Conservation and restoration" should be made more readable by piping the links, eg by turning "Conservation and restoration of wooden furniture" to "Conservation and restoration of wooden furniture|wooden furniture". It will then look a lot better. I've done A-C in the big section, wehich already looks a bit better.
- The articles themselves seem excellent, btw!
Johnbod (talk) 14:23, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks for all of your good thoughts. My effort was to try and begin to standardized the categorization of all these articles that are around Collections care and Conservation-restoration of cultural heritage. I've worked to get all of these into one book, Book:Encyclopedia of Conservation and Restoration --RichardMcCoy (talk) 14:58, 10 April 2016 (UTC)
Conservation and restoration
[edit]Can I ask why you've depopulated Category:Art conservation and restoration? Surely, that is a well-defined subcategory of conservation and restoration, and equally surely, Category:Conservation and restoration is quite large. It seems like moving the contents of the former into the latter constitutes a loss of precision for no apparent gain, but maybe your expertise in the field tells you otherwise. —swpbT 12:48, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- Sure, and thanks! It's too subjective and unnecessary. It is in fact not a well-define subcategory of conservation and restoration. Having it relate more generally to all cultural heritage, be it art or not art, is more appropriate. It will only make for confusion if some things are made art and some not. I believe that category should be deleted in its entirety. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 13:01, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- You might be right, but the matter should really have been raised for the community as a whole (sort of...) to consider at WP:CFD. Johnbod (talk) 13:12, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- Johnbod is right. I don't have the subject-specific knowledge to know whether this is the right move, but I'm pretty sure it's one that should get more input from folks who do have that knowledge. —swpbT 13:14, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- In the many years I've been working in Wikipedia, I've only seen one other conservator-restorer that edits, and he does so anonymously. I've had tons of interns, fellows, and grad students. I'm not sure who would be helpful here. But think of it this way: When does metal become "art" and when does it not? Or this way: many conservator-restorers don't work in museums but in a wide variety of heritage organizations around the world. Art is just not a useful sub categorization here. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 14:54, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- I've come across several who edit sometimes, but often/usually not on conservation and restoration general topics. If you watch articles on specific artworks (which I suspect you don't much) it is apparent that many editors with such expertise contribute, mostly at low levels. You never know who will be editing. Johnbod (talk) 15:00, 11 April 2016 (UTC)
- The category system has not had any problem identifying art in contexts other than restoration; if it was intended as art, it's art. If an article describes a restoration technique that is used beyond art, it belongs in the general category; otherwise, an art-specific subcategory, at least to me, is meaningful. The point, though, is not that I know anything about preservation, but that there's enough disagreement here to warrant seeking broader input. It certainly can't hurt. I've started such a discussion here. —swpbT 14:05, 12 April 2016 (UTC)
- Thanks to both of you for your hard work and efforts on this subject. I look forward to seeing the discussion that ensues. --RichardMcCoy (talk) 02:39, 13 April 2016 (UTC)
